Calling all D20 Modern fans!

Other RPGs

Well, over the last few years a small minority of us have been posting our interest at paizo publishing good quality adventures at the same level that they publish DnD adventures. So I would like to get everyone together who is interested in that. I guess we need to figure out what we want from them, and how we want it. A number of people have mentioned that they have adventures that they wouldn't mind submitting, so I think we should start. If you have a quality adventure, start flooding paizo with you submissions. Or perhaps, since dungeon and dragon have gone online, perhaps we can submit them to WOTC for some actual D20 Modern online support. Are people interested in this? Could we accomplish it? Everyone knows the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Hmmmm, maybe is some of the paizo people are listening, perhaps we can have a little D20 Modern/future adventure writing contest. Contest winned gets an Gamemastery adventure published....what would you guys say to that?

Salcor,

While I don't have any material to contribute, ever thought about getting a group to collect, edit, and put in PDF form? Maybe sell through Paizo.

Oh, thanks!!

You just reminded me that I have d20 Modern, with the Weapons Locker, Future and Future Tech supplements in addition to the boatload of fantasy d20 stuff I still have to use.

That said, a Paizo mech-based, Gundam (UC, obviously) themed, ongoing module series or - can I say it? - AP would leave me with the only option of subscribing to it.

I'm dubious that a complete "Pathfinder" style campaign would sell enough to be worth the investment, much as I'd love to see one. But some Gamemastery Modern? That would be sa-weet!

This is the main reason for this thread. I hate to say it, but everyone is probably right about a published adventure path not selling well, but we can at least start trading ideas for adventures. See what people are interested in. Perhaps even start a website where people can post open content adventures. Just trying to get the ball rolling for some synergy on the board.

I've suggested it before, but I think a Gamemastery adventure or two set in a modern/future version of the Pathfinder world would be fun. All the regular Pathfinder stuff could be like ancient history. But that way no one would have to reinvent cultures or races or anything. It would be an instantly rich, history-steeped modern world other than our own.

I think that the only problem with that would be that the pathfinder world is to very detailed at the moment. That is why the Greyhawk 2000 world would have worked well. We had 30 years worth of setting development that could have shown how the world would grow. Perhaps another idea would be to create a modern fantasy world, like Greyhawk 2000, and with its history open up a fantasy world as well.

You may wish to consider Spycraft. For a modern game, the rules are (by most people I have spoken with) considered to be better. I certainly have had a blast with them. Just one book to buy, and the game is highly cinematic.

The next time I run a modern game I think Im going to test out Star Wars Saga edition. I want to try and run a pulp action type of game and I think that the systems seems to capture that and fix a few of the issuses I had the d20 modern. I will probably be making some modifications to make it feel a little less like Star Wars, like removing lightsabers and Jedi. Instead Im going to see if I can build a Physchic using the force powers as the classes powers.

You might take a look at Spirit of the Century.

Looks cool, Im a little partial to d20 though. Mostly cuz Im lazy, and a little because I fing it hard to convince my group to play other systems no matter how simple they might be.

The last modern game I ran was Call of Cthulhu: Shadows of Yog-Sothoth. I had fun and so did the group for the most part, but I kept thinking to myself how I wished that I was using d20.Of course now that ive said that Im going to have a ton of people calling me a heritic!

I think one of the main issues when it comes to modern games is that there are so many diffrent styles of modern play that trying to pin one kind of adventure or AP is difficult at best.

Lets just say Paizo released a Modern adventure, what would it be?
Weird Horror in the Call of Cthulhu vein
Hard core like the Kult rpg
Action adventure like Jason Bourne
Espionage like James Bond
Urban Arcana or Dark Matter

Thats just for starters thers a ton of options and they all have a diffrent feel.

I guess if you defined the setting and created campaign bible that guided direction of the adventures and what works and what wouldnt then it could work.

I dont think this is a problem in D&D because the core rules govern to a certain degree what the fantasy world parameters are. The players know what to expect more or less, because the rules have defined how the world works, and that when the party forms they are adventurers seeking treasure, fame and what have you. In a modern game that party role needs to be defined as well, but again that requires that the setting be known.

Just a few thoughts

They have their own setting, but their adventures work well in any modern. They mostly do modern horror, and it is all d20, I believe, although they convert some of the adventures to Savage Worlds.

I'd love to see some d20 modules from Paizo, but to tell you the truth, I don't know if I'd ever have the chance to run them, with all the Pathfinder and GameMastery that I'd want to run.

Ironic you should say that.

Ah... d20 Modern. Quite possibly my favorite RPG I've never played. :(

I bought several books, mostly on sale, with high hopes of playing in a friend's promise of an Urban Arcana game... but the game never happened.

I have gleamed from the pages for several D&D "cross over" events that worked spectacularly. In the end of the campaign (Shackeled City, actually) one of the players brought in a d20 Modern PC back to Cauldron. It worked out surprisingly well.

I might buy some d20 modules or AP. If they came from Paizo I'd most definately buy at least the first adventure.

I'm sure they could work a deal with Rodney Thompson or Sean Reynolds, as they've published with Paizo before, and I don't think it would be that hard to enist any of the other Game Mechanics, for that matter.

If they (the Game Mechanics) aren't the champions of d20 Modern, I don't know who is.

I would have loved to run a d20 Modern campaign based on the SCAP, alas my group played it as written, by another DM. I have to say it was the best campaign Ive ever played in, so Im not that sad about it. The only real issue I have with d20 modern though is the classes, and mostly thats because of the names they have. I understand the reason behind it but dosent seem to evoke the same feelings as d&d classes do. I mean when you play a fighter you pretty much know your role in the group.

Sorry I haven't been around for a while, been busy with work. I have seen a number of colaberative online efforts to create a setting for people to play in. So I guess the question is what do WE want to see in a setting. Perhaps we should just start with Screenmonkey's list above an start throwing out some campaign world ideas.

Well my personal taste runs towards Cthulhu. I have a good number of source books for it that I would loved to plunder.

One idea I had for a campaign world was an alternate world war II setting. The basic premise was that this world was almost identical to ours except that the diffrent countries were diffrent races.Nothing set in stone here, but I was thinking somthing like Dark elves being Japanese,Elves in this world would being Asian.Dwarfs, Russian. Or something to this effect. I hadnt thought to far through that part. Technology would be on par with the time, however a low magic as dictated by the d20 modern rules would exist. The role of the PCs would be fighting against the axis of evil, or alternativly they could be civilians doing an Indianna Jones type of adventure. You could also do a variant Shadowrun campaign using this model, with goblinization happening now then instead of a futuristic cyberpunk setting.

Another idea I had was a variant of Unknown Armies.Basically the idea here is that the PCs are involved in the Occult Underground. This is a small group of people and organizations that are aware that magic is real and seek to become divine beings from it.I dont really want to use this whole cloth, rather I would want to retrofit it, liberally stealing stuff to make it is own distinct setting.

And a other idea I had was doing a truer to D&D version of Shadowrun.

Too many ideas and not enough time!

Hmm,
Those all sounds like good ideas. I totally understand about not having too many ideas and not enough time. I am trying to put together a campaign that starts as a normal cop investigation, then leads to the characters discovering magic, with the main bad guys being dragons. I thought converting Eyes of the Lich Queen might work out, but I need to pick it up and take a look at it. It would be nice if they would release Dark Matter as OGL.

There was a book for WoD called Precinct 13 or somthing like that. Basiclly from what I understand its a police station that ends up dealing with the paranormal.

It seems to me your looking to do a human oriented campaign that delves into the world of D&D.Like the Urbad Arcana model.

yeah Tales from the 13th Precinct

i have it. Good read. also helps you get a feel for the real deal (atleast to a certain degree) of how the law has to do things, espcially involving weirdness

Im not into the WoD but Ive seriously thought about picking this up to mine for ideas.

I might have to check it out. I did pick up a copy of Crime Scene Supernatureal from Hogshead at Gencon. It is pretty good too. Also the Game Mechanics Modern Magic has a section on magic and police investigation in it.
