4th edition got you confused? In this time of trepidation and uncertainty...

4th Edition

...pick up a copy of the Expedition to the Ruins of Castle Greyhawk by Erik Mona and company.

This adventure, even at first glance, is evocative of the great "campaign box" style of adventure that TSR/Wizards has managed to pull of so well on a few select occasions in the history of the game.

Whereas Expedition to the Ruins of Undermountain fell squarely on its face by not embracing the FR setting fully or the nostalgia of the original, this module does just about everything correctly, and evinces a genuine nostalgia for Greyhawk that bleeds from the pages.

It would be a shame of the quality of this product went unnoticed in the flood of 4th edition chaos. I can only imagine what was left on the cutting room floor if this was the end result.

Oh, and buy it from Paizo too! The one mistake I made was getting it as gift and not having the opportunity to send my cash their way.

I have since made up for that by purchasing a sh*tload of Pathfinder and Gamemastery products. You should do the same.

Great job, Erik, James, and Jason, still holding up hope you guys someday get the license for this setting in its entirety, it would be in great hands!

I was planning on picking this up after the weekend, as I had been eagerly anticipating it release for a few months. Then I was distracted by all the 4th edition stuff, and thought to myself 'do I really want to buy something for an edition that's going to be cancelled?'.

Thank you for reminding me why I wanted to pick it up in the first place - I'm going to go out and get it tommorow. Hopefully it's sales won't be hurt too much by the new edition news. If enought people buy this product maybe Greyhawk will see better support in 4th edition than it did in 3rd.

Let's put it this way, some adventures are worth buying just for the attention to detail, quality of the story, and being just a damn good read. This is one of them.

With a little help from some Dungeon magazines, older City of Greyhawk sourcebooks, and a love of the setting, this easily can be adapted to make for a magnificent campaign.

One of the main things I didn't like about this book was the random maps they put in to represent the PCs movements about some of the more extensive areas of the dungeon. I understand that they couldn't map everything, but I just don't like randomm maps. Luckily, I have way too many maps lying around that can be subsituted for various levels.

I also wish they could have gone into greater detail on the city and the surrounding region. And maybe they could have given some more NPCs of the city.

Otherwise, this was a fantastic book. Now if only those yahoos at WotC would put out a Greyhawk Campaign setting sourcebook.....

Well, the real mistake in getting it elsewhere is that if you get it here, it comes autographed by the three authors, Erik Mona, James Jacobs and Jason Buhlman. Fuh Frrrrreeeee..... (or rather, at no additional cost)

Rather than kicking yourself, you can just pick up an extra copy as a collector's item. :)

This, however, is awesome. : )

Liberty's Edge

I got my copy signed at GenCon!

I have the old version with all the maps, Amazon has it available *here* but I am sure you can find it elsewhere for much less. It provides all the maps you need.

Another old product is City of Greyhawk that serves well with maps and details of the city.

Both of these products are more fluff than crunch and while a bit 'old' in terms of Greyhawk current events, are easily adaptable.

That would be nice to take the stuff and update it in a single source, with all the crunch we've come to expect, but honestly, the old products are still worth their weight in gold. Check them out. For an old gamer like me, it certainly makes "Expedition to the Ruins of Castle Greyhawk" that much better....

"Me no know what you talking about. Me Robilar, me blow up Bigby real good." :-) if you've read it, you get it.

I'm still wandering through the city, amazed. The Green Dragon in is nice, I found myself going "Shad worked as a bouncer there!" and other warm and fuzzy moments.

Oh, and I've spotted one direct Age of Worms reference, and an oblique reference to the Savage Tide. Wondering what other Dungeon tidbits are in there I'm missing.
