I bought the first book for my nephew (8 years old at the time). We both read it, and neither of us much cared for it. It wasn't particularly bad by any means. I am having a hard time remembering the details of the story as I read it about 2 years ago. Perhaps that is my point, it just was not memorable.
It did have a good effect though, it has got me thinking about good books for younger readers in the fantasy vein, especially those that work well as D&D inspiration. I have been trying to read all the suggested books in the back of the Moldvay basic book (I think it is also in the Mentzer version, but not sure. It also overlaps a lot with the 1st ed. DMG appendix N).
