Hands down my favorite movie. People won't watch it with me though because by the end they are always, "Dude, that's you!"

Scary movies for adults tend to be more of the "status quo" changers.

yeah, watch it with any redneck or patriot and the room will have a lot of finger pointing.

I just heard from a bunch of peeps here at work that Jesus Camp is scary; anyone got another opinion?

Scariest movie ever: New York Minute.

Those freaky Olsen twins are terrifying.

has anyone mentioned Deliverance?

Junior. Nothing is more terrifying than a pregnant Arnold Schwartzenegger.

Liberty's Edge

When I was younger, Exorcist took the crown. Just hearing it from the TV was enough to keep me sleeping with my light on for weeks.

Then DnD came along. A few years later, I rented Exorcist because to that day it was always something that scared me in memory. I watched it, and found it intriguing rather than so scary. Although that night, I still slept with the light on :)

Mind you I grew up on horror movies. Things like Hellraiser and Freddy Krueger were just baseline storytelling for me. So it takes a lot to really scare the crap out of me. I mean a lot. I'm pretty jaded. I have nightmares and wake up going...coool. I've actually (and I still feel bad) offended folks here with my love of the macabre. That said, The Ring had me totally white knuckled scared out of my mind. I sat through that movie with a deathgrip on the armrests like I was in a rollercoaster. I still have that image of Katie in the closet burned into my head.

"You don't understand. I saw...her face" WRREEENNK!

...I kid you not I was messed up for days after that. I didn't want to answer the phone or even cross the room in front of my TV. I haven't been that scared by a movie since I was five. It was awesome!

So yeah.

Other movies I deeply love in the horror genre:

Silent Hill
Queen of the Damned
Resident Evil
Dawn of the Dead (the remake is one of the best movies ever made)
Night of the Living Dead (the Tom Savini remake)
28 Days Later
28 Weeks Later
Ginger Snaps 1 & 2
13 Ghosts

...I know there should be more but that's the big ones that come to mind.

They work fine for me. I wonder what happened. Thanx, either way!

My top three horror flicks (based on the scare factor) of all time:

The original A Nightmare on Elm Street. The scene where Johnny Depp gets murdered is horrible and disturbing...

The 1982 Remake of The Thing. Not only did the scene in the dog kennel have me up for a week, but what environment is more isolating and hopeless than the antartic?

and finally, Return of the Living Dead - There is something very horrible about zombies that can run and scream, and tell you how much it hurts to be dead (right before they bite through your skull).

I suppose if you feel that "the evil Liberal agenda in this country is hostile to Christianity," you'd probably send money to the Jesus camp, and be annoyed that the movie didn't provide you with the address at the end. On the other hand, my wife and I rented it not too long ago, and we both thought it was absolutely terrifying. Then again, I'm not a Christian, so of course it bothers me that there are whole camps full of 8-year-olds who have been trained to desperately want me dead.

Grand Lodge

I just watched Jesus Camp too, and it certainly made me sit up and pay attention. Much scarier than any horror flicks I've seen in quite a while (it might be in its place to point out that I'm not a horror fan; that's especially especially true for the current torture fetish the genre seems to have developed), but perhaps not as chilling as Children of men. Well worth a viewing - take a look at the commentary track and the extra features as well.

How about going japanese and certainly not the remake. The Grudge is very high on the scary list. The final shots when the wife is pulling herself down the stairs is a real chiller moment.

Grimcleaver wrote:

Dawn of the Dead (the remake is one of the best movies ever made)

I have to agree with you Grim. So many remakes fall so short of the originals. Dawn managed to retain the feeling a group of people you could care about, get involved with and go along with on the roller coaster of a movie. A difficult task but it matched the original on all fronts. I still find the baby scenes very hard to watch.

Dark Archive

Cannibal Holocaust(for shock factor) with the original Dawn of the Dead(scarier) running a close second. Amittyville 2: the possession is scarey as hell too!!(no seriously, you have been warned, harsh content and a great performance by "Paulie" from the Rocky films)

*the 1st evil dead has possibly the scariest "zombie" ever (Ash's girlfriend)

Hands down, it has to be Trilogy of Terror. If you want to permanently scar your under 13 child, have them watch this. That damn Zuma doll is just spine-tinglingly freaky.

Scarab Sages

I like alot of Black and White old style horror flicks - though many are quite cheesy (i.e. White Zombie, if I could raise my enemies as undead I WOULD CERTAINLY use them to work my sugar plantation...), I am also very fond of the old Hammer House of Horror films. That being said, only 3 movies have really scared me (that I can recall):

1. Evil Dead - I was just a teenager when this first came out, my parents went to see my aunt and uncle and I stayed home on a stormy night - and with the help of a few of pop's stolen beers (yes I broke the law!)- to watch this by myself, really creeped me out...
2. Exorcist III - actually gave me nightmares, and George C. Scott was brillant
3. Hellraiser II - yes by today's standards a real cheese fest, but it was the concept of the cenobites having once been human that got my goat

As a side note: most of today's horror is just 'torture porn' and really sad - Hostel, SAW, etc. The only thing grosser is the STD propaganda movies I had to watch in the army when I went to Korea (now those will turn your hair white!)

Liberty's Edge

I remember as a kid seeing Pet Semetary and being seriously freaked out by a few scenes:

1.) the mom, played by Denise Crosby, has a flashback to her childhood and her sister who was kept locked in the basement.

2.) When Gage, the 2-year old boy, runs into the road and gets hit by the speeding truck.

3.) When Gage is "ressurected" and is hiding in various parts of the house giggling maniacally.

The rest of the movie was...meh.

I think that it is interesting to see people's reactions to this film--some Christians for instance were mostly annoyed because it presented them in a disturbing way (though I felt that the people who were featured in the film were somewhat at fault for not explaining their beliefs more clearly) on the other ha

nd others I know were happy to see a film in which children are being taught to pray and evangelize. Then again some others still were disturbed as you were.

For my part I found it interesting to see a film in which church practices I'm familiar with are presented. I can see why it might be thought of as scary but really it is more about prayer and evangelism than anything else. As far as the political stuff goes, that bothers me but more because it is a case of ignorant people (in many cases) being led by others with an agenda that has little to do with spreading the message of Christ.

...anyway, I think the scariest films include:
The Exorcist
Prince of Darkness

though I have a thing for zombie type movies. I think the reason why movies like 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead and so on seem so scary is that the idea of strangers acting weird is something that has off and on bothered people a lot--similar shocks to the social system happening in both the late 60s and then in the present.

High School Musical, hands down. Well... Let me clarify that; When my fiance watched that, I stuck around playing WoW for about half and hour until I couldn't take it anymore. The movie literally filled me with a rage I have trouble putting into words. I'd yell things, ala MST3K, out in the background at first, but it eventually built up so much that I had to leave the house. I suppose it's what the movie did to me that fraeked me out more than the actual content.

What is the synopsis for Prince of Darkness?

Dark Archive

The movie that really scared me as a youngster was 'Jaws'. I watched it alone, while my parents were out and my grandma (who had to watch over me) fell asleep early on the couch and left the TV running.
She slept like a stone and I watched the whole thing and this experience really hooked me on horror movies.
The creepy feeling you get when you know there'll be something, that you don't really want to see, but can't take your eyes of it in exitement is great...:)
About the same time I got to see 'Rosemary's Baby', which I really found creepy back then.
Whenever I move I'm scared that my new neighbours might remind me of the folks in that movie...:)

As a teen I was scared by the second part of 'Evil Dead'. I know that it was supposed to be a funny remake, but it nonetheless really scared me.
The dark woods, the thing in the basement, the eye in the hand...Raaaahhhh!!!!
:)

The latest movie to really scare me was 'The Ring' (the remake) and I was really surprised that it scared me that much, that I got to revisit the creepy feeling from my youth.
It was great and terror at once...
I found it really silly to feel scared when walking through the dark corridor after that to got to the toilet, but I couldn't help it...
I haven't seen it a second time, 'cause the memory is far enough...
Another film that I found truely creepy was 'The Others', but not in the terror-way 'The Ring' scared me, more in a way of suspense...

The Exchange

I saw both The Shining and Jaws at a very young age (like 4). No movie will ever scare me as badly as those two movies did back then.

I wouldn't even sit on the toilet for fear of sharks.

Scarab Sages

I watched "The Thing" (Original) when I was a little boy - that movie really scared me - aside from that, I think the scariest movies I saw are
- Shining
- Silent Hill
- Event Horizon
- Mouth of Madness
- se7en
- kalifornia

Let's keep this thread alive.

I would say the horror movie that has impressed me the most in recent years was without doubt "The Descent".

It's the story of several women who go on a speleology trip in the mountains, when something goes wrong...

It looks pretty basic at first, but the tension is for real in this flick, from first to last minute. I mean you'll really feel claustrophobic and hopelessly lost, without any hope. It's a genius movie, and the characters, while pretty straight forward, have a real psychology that makes you feel the whole movie even more.

A truely great movie I recommend to everyone. If you have the chance to catch the european version, the ending is quite different...don't want to reveal anything, but it's really not hollywood at all.

So grab that great movie! And don't mistake it with that crap "The Cave"!

As well, I have been really impressed by "28 Days Later" and "28 Weeks Later", a really cool re-imagining of your typical zombie movie.

I'm also glad to give my vote to "Event Horizon" which was brilliant and totally overlooked by the critic. I mean it's pure gold from beginning to end!

If the poster said or implied they were scared at the movie I counted it. If they said the movie was great, but they were not scared, I did not count it.

I also did not include 'torture' movies, as it was implied these are not scary just intense; nor TV shows and games.

If we are talking about recent movies, the Strangers was pretty scary I thought. The Blair Witch Project really scared me hardcore the first time I saw it. I found Hostel not so much scary as it really messed with my head. The Exorcist I saw as a kid and it was truely frightening. Now I find it funny more than anything else. Se7en I found to be genius though not particularly frightening. Hellraiser got me really bad the first time.

You may need to add songs to get it to fit the film's entire length, but yeah, you really could get a bizarro vibe going if you let partygoers know the plan.

    Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2013

As a kid, Salem's Lot was the scariest movie I'd ever seen. I think I was eight years old, and I couldn't sleep, and I couldn't stand to see windows at night. I heard that music every night for days. I've never seent he remake, but I know it won't be as good.

As an adult, Event Horizon passed Alien as the scariest movie I'd seen, until The RIng.

Now, I went to The Ring kind of annoyed. I hadn't heard reviews of it, but my business partner and best bud decided we were going to catch a movie and the one we wanted to see was at the wrong theater or something. So we decided on The Ring. I knew only that it was about a haunted VCR tape that killed its viewers. So I knew immediately this movie was a FAIL and it was a waste of my money.

"You don't understand. I saw...her face." I have only jumped like that a few times. The Ring, the first time I saw Scarecrow in Batman Begins, and when my wife told me she was pregnant.

My pal and I gave the movie a little more attention and I stopped expecting it to suck. By the time she is reaching for the fly on the monitor, two guys whoe don't believe in ghosts, have a secure belief in their afterlife, and love scary movies are agreeing to go home if the other one wants to.

I haven't seen it a second time, but I wonder if it wouldn't be as creepy. I have The Ring 2 rented for halloween, but I didn't make time to watch it yet.

That is by far my favorite ghost story, and you can bet your bottom dollar we had friends go see it without us the very next night.

    You know. Just in case.

Be VERY afraid of the awful things Hollywood can do to a good movie, when someone is foolish enough to let them make a sequel.

    Spoiler:
Like replacing the cool ghost story in Ring 1 with herds of CGI deer for Ring 2... someone evidently honestly thought that would be a great idea.

Same movie. Same age. Same experience.

Saw it on TV with my older brother sitting beside me amping it up. To this day the scene with the vampire kid scratching the window to get in still flashes through my mind and gives me chills.

After Salem's Lot it was The Shining. But that was a few years later and didn't get me as bad.

So Salem's Lot is #1 for me.
