Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

Jason was the first one in, saying Erik was going to be in soon, if he went back to bed he’d be punished.

Item card art will show up in pathfinder stuff. (I’ve the shrunken head card, whoo hoo!)

Reiterated that WotC decided not to renew. Will debut at GenCon.

6 installments in an arc. 50 pages of adventure, rest is support material. Articles, new monsters, etc.

Adventures themselves will be handled mostly by experience writers. “Module part is pretty much closed to new authors.” -Erik.

Pathfinder Beastiary, article every month, about 6 new monsters. More freelancer friendly

No writers guidelines yet.

Can blame James for the lack of writers guidelines since he’s editor in Chief..

Game Mastery Modules. SRD of course.

Will refer to Tome of Horrors. Will try to print ToH 3.5 Book of Fiends as well.

Moduls 20-21K words 16K adventure. Back end is going to be about the module itself. 1 a month

Default world is a name I can't pronounce. Some will be at established areas, some might be ‘blank’ areas.

D series =dungeon
W Wilderness
U Urban
E Event
J Journey

1 year open call module. Brief plot 1-2 paragraphs. May be completely open may have guidelines. Adventrues show summary of challenges, rewards, summary.

Quite Likely will announce something biannual. 100 page pathfinder support. To help fill ‘holes’ in the AP. Example given was running commoners against a spawn of Kyuss in the AoW campaign.

Should follow the writers guidelines when submitting critters. Dungeon guidelines are on website, but the pathfinder suggestions they passed out (sorry EP) isn’t.

Modules- Query and then from there.
Critters, send the entire thing in.

Q/A: List of things they don’t want in Dungeon will likely be a constant. List may change.

It’s promounced var IS e a. At least by Erik.

64 page campaign setting gazetter with a Poster map in Jan.

Tome of Horrors, 3.5 book of fiends from Green Ronin.

Liberty's Edge

Oh, okay. The ToH threw me off--I got the Book of Fiends from Green Ronin.

So they are not actually accepting submissions yet, but are more or less prepped to do so soon? Am I correct in that assumption?

Thanks for the info, by the by.

hm...no hard guidelines yet, and modules look to be off limits to newbies.

So, really they are taking creature/bestiary submissions?

I guess we'll know more in the coming months.

Sounds about right. And we'll certainly be looking for monsters more than anything else. But again... we're not QUITE ready to get moving on this, and probably won't be for a bit. We haven't even decided on an email to send the submissions to, for example.

But we WILL be accepting submissions somehow, some way, soon.

It's true. We're going to try to incorporate a few tested authors who haven’t previously written an adventure path adventure into each new AP series, but largely the place for new adventure writers to get their start is in the GameMastery Modules line. In Pathfinder, back matter will be more open, but we plan on commissioning much of that work (world details, ecological write-ups, Pathfinder Journals, etc) from trusted authors—those who show expertise in an area we're interested in detailing, and those we're grooming for a full adventure path adventure.

That leaves the Bestiary, which is the easiest way to catch our eye. We need about six new creatures every month so we're always on the lookout for cool beasties of all CRs. This isn't your typical monster design either, our format in Pathfinder takes a pretty significant step from the usual stat block and combat text format and most monsters are planned to take up two pages. Honestly the closet similar format appears in Privateer's Monsternomicon. This gives new writers a place to show both their rules knowledge and a show off their creativity and design skills. Wow us here and that’s sure to bounce you a few rungs up the ladder (start thinking about those monsters now!).

We haven't gone into detail about submissions yet, mainly because we're all working on the full-time job of finishing Dragon and Dungeon right now while also doing the full-time job of Pathfinder and GameMastery (it's okay, though, our growing collective alcoholism helps). With the first Pathfinder being due out in a little over a month here, the easiest way to tell would-be submitters what to do is to reference an actual volume, so we're kind of waiting for that to hit. But don't worry, soon after it does we can start saying "See, like this" and then one of us (most likely me) will set up an email account where you can send all your good ideas and start down the path to fame and super stardom.

Also, don't think we're not watching these boards until then. There's already been a few threads on monster ideas and when it comes time to flesh out the next Bestiary and we're short a creature or two this is one of the first places we're sure to look!

Very helpful! Thanks!

(Just want to make sure we're not "muddying" up the boards for you guys, with stuff you can't/won't use.)

Indeed very helpful. Makes me happy I have started creating and editing and revising and playtesting . . .well, you get the point, about a dozen critters so far. I kind of figured that was the first and easiest point of entry.

For those of you who are interested in writing adventures, I would check out Goodman Games . . .I have long been considering sending them a query, but I first want to finish the bulk of my adventure before I do so. There staff/guidelines seem both friendly and open to us 'newbies' --

One question: When it comes to publishing someone's work, do you look at their credentials outside of the gaming industry or not. For example, if an author of multiple literary short stories were to present something too you, does it carry more heft as he is experienced in the mysteries of publishing? My guess is probably not much if any, but I am interested I guess.

Thanks for the info again, guys. Hope you are having fun at Origins.

While there's a few companies that honestly don't seem to care what you've had published in the past, if you're interested in writing for us we'd love to hear what you've worked on previously. All of here in the Paizo editorial pit are voracious readers and gamers and if it turns out that we've read/played and loved something you had a hand in that sure can't hurt! While writing fiction isn't quite like writing adventures and not all companies harp on the rules like we do, experience is experience so feel free to dish.

Any news as to whether Paizo will be producing an annual (or twice yearly) product full of adventures similar to what one might have found in a typical issue of Dungeon?

Eric Mona suggested that you might in a thread on the Dungeon forums after "the announcement" and several people expressed interest in such a product, myself included. I still think it would be very popular, as well as a good way for new authors to get a chance to see their name in print.

Olaf, the 'fill in the blanks thing' that Erik mentioned might be what you're looking for.

I wanted to add as an aside (hoping I don't embarass her) I got to talk to Paizo's lovely CEO, Lisa Stevens, and she said she had some ideas she wanted to submit to 'the guys' for Pathfinder monsters.

Now look at that in perspective. A) The CEO of the company is psyched about submitting stuff to the books. B) She has to go through the same hoops we mere mortals do. C) No pushing to the front of the line due to title.

I think this is why I like small companies in the market place of ideas. Can you imagine a VP at Hasbro, heck, anyone of middle management on up, being psyched about the leap of faith that it took to make Pathfinder? I work in the evil faceless corporate world, and can't imagine anyone above my boss wanting to be on the front lines, let alone not using rank.

More and more, I'm really feeling I've made the right choice with my gaming dollars.

That's quite an interesting perspective on Paizo.

I just have so much I can spend on games every months and I also get the feeling that going with Paizo is the right way.

Btw, thanks for all the info-sharing Matthew!!
