I am sure he's just laughing while the absurdity of a bath in fluid gold came to his mind...
The Aurumkobold...maybe he's an enigma!

Or better yet - a reincarnated Gold Dragon just realizing what happened to him...

Lantern Lodge

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I was going to go with the "there are also good aligned kobolds who are colored like the good aligned dragons" thing, but that seems cliche.

So, new idea. Umm... Well, I'll let him tell you.

Rithikan not liked-liked by others, Rithikan just want left alone. Rithikan go good-good lengths to make scales different. Rithikan make scales look shiny-shiny so others think he worth like shiny-shiny. Others try to kill Rithikan and take shiny-shiny scales for good-good treasure.

Rithikan hate stupid others. Rithikan just want-want left alone. Rithikan not laugh-laugh because things funny. Rithikan laugh-laugh because others made Rithikan crazy with attacks when sleeping.

His name is Gizmo. He is the nice gremlin (I mean, kobold).

Gerlakesh, he who is of no color, was born an enigma of his tribe, with the ability to assume any hue. His unique chameleon-like gift has allowed him to become the perfect little assassin, striking out at those his King finds are in need of being removed. Gerlakesh is all to eager to oblige. His favorite act of waiting for his target, is by taking the disguise of stone and pretending to be a gargoyle. His one weakness however is in the presence of sunlight, his skin takes on a bright yellow color, which causes him more pain then others of his ilk.

This kobold is naturally the true BBEG of the adventure. He is a captain of a kobold militia or something, and he has power and supporters ready to take the place of (or get rid of) the current king.

Makes good for future adventures.

As for a name...I like Karlenot.

I must say I really like the earlier suggestion of him being the 'special' son of the Kobold King, but in addition I had a thought. What if he was killed, then returned with a Reincarnate spell. Presumably in this setting you'd need to roll randomly for scale color just as you might for hair and eye color of another race. So he just got that a color with a historical/genetic basis (perhapses along the lines with the previous suggestion of when Tiamat had additional heads, and similarly had become a recessive gene for color so many in the population might carry it but never exhibit it.) in a "pure" form so he is actual able to exhibit the color.

He's an immune carrier of yellow mold. Whenever he get's hit, the mold fires spores all over. He has a spore cloud breath weapon because his lungs are full of the stuff.

Sand Dragon (literally)

That's my favorite take yet!

Poor bastard.

I concur. All those chromatic dragon-colored kobolds are evil. A gold one (any metallic one, for that matter) has to be good.

Poor bastard.

Liberty's Edge

He's jaundiced; he has some kind of hepatitis. Better not get any of his body fluids on you. (i. e. range tactics are best).

Color-blind doppleganger?

No one's going to appreciate him anyway until Santa kobold's darkvision goes and Rudy needs to light the way.
Then it'll be all "Rudy this" and "Rudy that". "We liked you all along."

In the highly tribal society of kobolds, ostracism must be one of an individual's most feared fates. Alone in the underdark, without the support of kin and the strength of numbers upon which every kobold so heavily relies, the banished has little chance of survival. And it's much worse than this, for kobolds are nasty little creatures discontent with a mere casting out of an aberrant fellow. In a widely attended and applauded pageant, they bath the condemned in offense oils, changing his coloration and scent to spotlight him to the prowling dangers of the exile caves.

And yet, despite near assurance of death, some banished do survive. The kobold tale "Spite of the Yellow Ones" keeps youngsters close to heel in its graphic depiction of a baby's abduction and fate at the hands of an entire leper-like colony of exiles. Of course, it's probably just a story. Whether such bands actually exist is pure speculation. But you can count on two things. There's no place for a "good seed" in kobold society, and life is persistant.

He is Kikkajak, Warrior-Monk and Bodyguard of His Greatness.

While the king himself surely faces many challenges, it would demean him to fight his own battles (not to mention threaten his own life) and so he chose the most ferocious and dutiful kobold in the lands to serve as his personal guard. He was also chosen for his unique coloration, making his presence very obvious to those who would think to attack the king. He serves not only as a bodyguard, but as a status symbol and an icon of the strength of His Greatness's leadership. While Kikkajak is indeed descended from a golden dragon, he is still thoroughly wicked. His heritage, however, has bestowed him with uncommon discipline. He has long been a student of ancient unarmed fighting techniques and has invented his own style to make use of his talons and teeth.

Kikkajak is a lawful evil kobold monk.

Tikatik, female kobold sorceress

Tikatik is actually Jekkajak's grand-niece and "apprentice". He had the same yellow colouring at his birth (now faded to white), and this marked him, and her, as tribal shamans. Jekkajak has been her tutor and mentor since her birth. She currently maintains a position of some respect, as apprentice and interpreter of Jekkajak's "prophecies".

What no one in the tribe knows is that Tikitik has been drugging Jekkajak with fungus and mold from a nearby swamp for months. Learning what she can from him during his more lucid moments, she subtly takes more and more power for herself. The old fossil is proving more and more resistant to the drugs, and she is going impatient for him to die. Soon she will have to do something drastic.

There is no record of a gold ever being born. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen; it just means no one talks about it. On the rare occasion of a gold's hatching, the affronted parents kill the abomination and dispose of it quietly. No one's the wiser.

When all but one egg of the king's clutch collapsed and rotted, the remaining one was predicted to be destined for greatness - an omen well suited to the king's boundless ego. The hatching was made a very public affair. When the shell cracked and a gold emerged from the mucous interior, a great silence grew. The adroit king spoke. He declared the hatchling a prophet and a warrior predestined for greatness, and he openly challenged any to deny his truth. No one dared.

I thought almost the same thing, mostly from past character ideas. I think it's a totally feasible idea that there are metalicy kobolds as well as chromatic but they are so rare (and tend to be eaten at birth) that they hardly get there 'moment in the sun' as it were.

Few Truescale Kobolds speak the name of "The One Painted Like the Hurt-Hurting Fire Eye Above" out loud. It is widely accepted that the abomination can hear its name through both shadows and sunlight, and will tear apart those who speak it without his permission. None have ever witnessed such an occurrence, but few think it smart to try it out for themselves. Originally ostracized for his differences, the cackling kobold used the tribe's own superstitions and fears to enhance his own frightful legend until he adapted it as part of his own persona. Only Merlokrep can call on the cruel Krolukk to use his unique talents, for the Dragon King would only allow him to stay in the tribe if he served him. Krolukk often wanders the vast areas outside the caves of the Truescale alone, but that is when the crafty and wicked kobold is most dangerous.

Spoiler:
Unlike most of his kind, Krolukk does not suffer from Light Sensitivity. This makes him an excellent gatherer of information and a potentially dangerous, if unexpected, hunter or scout. On open plains, rocky areas, or in bright deserts, his unusual color gives him a great bonus on Hide checks. Best suited for a ranger, rogue, or scout class (or some combination of them).

No mystery. It was a white kobold who got a full body tat on a dare during one night of heavy drinking.

The vision came to Jekkajak in the darkness of his meditations; the Truescale Tribe would rise up and conquer the lands of the Burning Orb. The ritual revealed itself to the aging shaman and, upon waking from his "meditiations", he began gathering together the needed components to bring the forseen phrophecy into being.

Many of the needed materials were easy to locate. The skulls of the tribe's enemies were quickly obtained, as were the needed tallow and herbs. The yellow pigment and oil of illumination proved difficult to obtain, but not impossible.

For several days, the shaman spent every waking moment painting his scales the color of the pain-giving Orb, repeating the chants he had heard in his moment of enlightenment. When he would drift to sleep during the ritual's period, the same visions came to him; he would dance in ever erractic patterns as the Damned Orb slowly darkened, eventually extinguishing as the Truescales burst forth unto the lands now devoid of the searing light ...

He could be called Verolekk the mischievous by his bretheren. He is the gatekeeper of their "kingdom" who controls much more than Merlokrep realizes. Setting especially brutal traps for any who would dare enter without his permission. He is especially wise and intelligent for a kobold, but very rarely does he choose to show it. Verolekk knows all about the "deaths" of Merlokrep's siblings, mainly because he helped kill some of them through traps and lures of his own creation. He has a twisted sense of humor about him. Showing complete devotion to Merlokrep, but causing him many a problem behind his back. Verolekk himself has a nice sized treasure stored away from those unsuspecting enough to get caught in his traps, which he uses to bribe other creatures to do his bidding. Never trusting of his own bretheren Verolekk never reveals any of his treasure to them for fear of being found out by Merlokrep before he has a chance to take over for himself. Verolekk might just let the right adventurers through his gauntlet of traps if he thought they could end Merlokrep's reign.

+++ psionic kobold...

Ok Wes Schneider's latent OCD is catching.

I kind of feel out of place here. Am I the only one that bought the Races of the Dragon supplement (WotC 2006 author Gwendolyn Kestrel)? There is actually a feat (pg100) called Dragon-Wrought that changes the kobolds subtype from reptilian/dragonblooded to dragon (trueblood?) tinting the scales of the Kobold with this feat the color of his dragon ancestor, be they metallic, chromantic, Gem, Epic, planar, etc.

It also goes on to say that even if a kobold has a gold dragon history it doesn't necessarily affect the alignment.

So she could be Aurin, paladin of Bahamut, but could just as easily be Pyria the gilded Blackguard of Tiamat.

Frank Wrege wrote:

I like it. Especially since Those Darn Adventurers are likely to assume that gold dragon = goodness. A clever little kobold could lead them quite astray...

Burl Ives, as a Christmasland snowman, sings to the tune of Silver and Gold:

Yellow not gold...

Ok ok I'll concede that the Kobold is drawn yellow. After all "What should we do with the yellow kobold?" is the thred.
I guess we'll have to see how the creators have tweaked the appearance of the dragon types in Pathfinder.

The Kobold in question is Depicted in the same shades of "Yellow" that the DMG Gold dragon is (even if it's skull features look more like a Copper Dragons).

For an alternate background,

Ensolarada Paladin of Saranrae, the Dawnflower.

or

Amariyo shining blackguard of Kossuth(or whatever evil god Pathfinder has with fire in the portfolio)

I think someone else suggested that Paizo could photoshop this kobold to a different color. Do that, with the artist's permission, and the sky's the limit for this critter.

I vote for a new yellow dragon type. Given all the other re-imagining perhaps the basic dragons would also need some new thoughts which might leave room for the yellow Dragon by environment.

In fact, let's do a twist on the "missing chromatics" (which are not OGC anyway), and do these three, based on primary colors (not pigments):

red x blue = magenta
red x green = yellow
blue x green = cyan.
Of course, this would mean magenta and cyan kobolds later on.

Scarab Sages

When a nest of kobold eggs reaches maturation, the mass exodus of hatchlings, and the subsequent race for sustenance, weeds out the weakest of the race. Hatchlings fall to consuming scraps of nearby food or each other in their ravenous hunger. A trained kobold eye can tell much from about a young kobold’s future by how the young mewling emerges from its egg. All crack their birth shells with teeth grown just for the purpose, extending their lower jaws and narrowing their skulls to slowly widen the hole. Timid kobolds will then exit the shell with a foot or tail first, indicating their future status as servants and fodder, and find food that is unguarded, or eat hatchlings still stuck half in their eggs. Those destined for a violent death exit quickly, head first, scrambling over other the nest in their haste to consume the first thing they lay eyes on. Leaders too leave their shells head first, but alert, almost calculating, taking in their surroundings and noting movements around them and choosing their meals carefully. And there are those who do not exit. At least, not at first.

The Ochr-rk are known from birth. A select few kobolds, showing a penchant for survival beyond that for which their kind is known, take measures even before hatching to break their shell stealthily, without drawing the attention of their ravenous brethren. With careful specificity, these kobolds begin cracking the bottom of their shell up to a week before the others. When many of the other newborn kobolds have already hatched, the Ochr-rk haltingly crack fissures along both walls of their shell. Then they wait.

As is normal in a clutch of birthing kobolds, the strong prey upon the weak, so when an intrepid and hungry mewling learns that uncracked eggs are an easy source of food, his shell-cracking tooth is put to good use again. Except when that egg belongs to a future Ochr-rk. The hollow Ochr-rk shell, fragile already from its cracked base and week-long drying breaks in the center easily, but the two ends remain strong. The first strike the hungry mewling makes against the shell puts a hole in the shell just large enough for his head to fit through. Expecting more resistance, the mewling’s head thrusts through the opening, his jaw realigning and his skull expanding. The fissures along the sides of the egg wall collapse, pinning the young kobold with his head in the shell. The Ochr-rk’s has laid his first trap.

The Ochr-rk is a kobold trap-maker – renowned among their kind. Neither warriors, shamans, sorcerers, nor leaders, Ochr-rk nonetheless combine the spirit and ruthlessness of all great kobolds. Ochr-rk are drawn from all breeds of kobold, but as adults they are universally yellow. They are chosen at birth to apprentice to other Ochr-rk, thus forming a small sub-clan. The rite of passage from apprentice to master involves bathing in a pool of diluted ochre jelly: the reason for their yellow coloring.

The Kobold in question is Depicted in the same shades of "Yellow" that the DMG Gold dragon is (even if it's skull features look more like a Copper Dragons).

Whoops Should have been MMI Gold Dragon

Description: This is not a Kobold at all, rather it is a golem that was created by the Archmage Idiah, as part of a non-aggression pact made with the Great Wyrm Hazaulthrilimaun. The golem along with 5,000 pieces of silver was to be delivered to the Great Wyrm, but alas never completed the journey. Hazaulthrilimaun believed that Idiah was withholding his portion of the pact, and the dragon immediately went on the offensive. The bards’ tales say that….

“…The night twas lit by fires of dragon and the arcane.
By morn, the Vellon Valley was merely a plain.
And neither was seen again, again,
And so it goes, and so it goes,
An Adventurer’s life is fraught with woes…”

-an except from the Tavern Song…Life is Fraught with Woes by D’manda Anthym

This, of course, is not the whole story. I will not belabor ye with all the details. Suffice to say, that a young rival of the great Hazaulthrilimaun had set the gears in motion that would result in the proud beasts passage. So confident was this young wyrm in its plan, even as the pitched battle between dragon and wizard was playing out, Gorenthosis, for that was the young wyrm’s name, began to penetrate the defenses of Hazaulthrilimaun , to keep him distracted from the combat that he was presently engaged in. This action gave the Archmage Idiah the edge which he so desperately needed to gain the upper hand to vanquish such a beast as Hazaulthrilimaun … but this advantage merely succeeded in eliminating both combatants…just as Gorenthosis had planned.

Gorenthosis not only “relocated” the great wyrm’s hoard, but also “anonymously donated” a sizable portion to a nearby kobold tribe, by placing it near the entrance to their lair. The young wyrm reasoned that the villages in the neighboring countryside would be driven mad with greed. More importantly that their mages would look magically for any sign of the hoard…which could, apparently, be easily be recovered by destroying the kobolds. The Kobolds soundly trounced the heroic bands of treasure seekers until one day, they were attacked no longer. One day stretched into a week, then a month, then a year. The generations passed. Many tales circulate to this day of darkness, draconic death curses, human sacrifices, local plagues, and betrayal in and around the caverns of the kobolds… yet the truth is simpler and more wicked than appearances you have you believe. For… “The Truth is in the Telling of the Tale.”

Story-
“The Telling of the Tale…”
The golem was merely defending its new home. The golem was one of the newly acquired arcane amusements in the hoard of Gorenthosis. Gorenthosis knew of the purpose that Hazaulthrilimaun had created it for. The young wyrm “possessed” the golem and cast spells through it, often annihilating a whole adventuring band with a single spell as they were ill prepared for the threat that lay hidden in the hoard of the kobolds.

This golem has a kobold body made from gold. A golden kobold golem wears no clothing.
A golden kobold golem cannot speak or make any vocal noise. It walks and moves lithely, and quickly through all types of terrain. It weighs around 300 pounds.
Combat
Cursed Wound (Ex): The damage a golden kobold golem deals doesn’t heal naturally and resists healing spells. A character attempting to cast a conjuration (healing) spell on a creature damaged by a golden kobold golem must succeed on a DC 26 caster level check, or the spell has no effect on the injured character.
Immunity to Magic (Ex): A golden kobold golem is immune to any spell or spell-like ability that allows spell resistance, with the exception of any Magic cast by a dragon-blooded creature…. Up to and including kobolds. The golem may make an unadjusted saving throw to save versus the effects of the magic from these casters. In addition, certain spells and effects function differently against the creature, as noted below.
A golden kobald is controlled from any distance on the same plane by a helmet of beaten gold which must be worn to “awaken” the golden kobold.
A disintegrate spell slows the golem (as the slow spell) for 1d4 rounds and deals 1d12 points of damage.
A heat metal spell cast directly at a golden kobold golem stops it from moving on its next turn and deals 5d10 points of damage. The golem gets no saving throw against any of these effects.
Any magical attack against a golden kobold golem that deals acid damage heals 1 point of damage for every 3 points of damage it would otherwise deal. If the amount of healing would cause the golem to exceed its full normal hit points, it gains any excess as temporary hit points. For example, a golden kobold golem hit by the breath weapon of a black dragon heals 7 points of damage if the attack would have dealt 22 points of damage. A golden kobold golem gets no saving throw against magical attacks that deal acid damage.
Haste (Su): After it has engaged in at least 1 round of combat, a golden kobold golem can haste itself once per day as a free action. The effect lasts 3 rounds and is otherwise the same as the spell.
Construction
A golden kobold golem’s body must be sculpted from a single block of Gold weighing at least 100 pounds, treated with rare oils and powders worth 10,000 gp. Creating the body requires a DC 15 Craft (sculpting) check and a DC 15 Craft (blacksmithing) check.
CL 11th; Craft Construct, animate objects, commune, resurrection, caster must be at least 11th level; Price 20,000 gp; Cost 11,750 gp + 720 XP.
