So will WAR be providing us with some new Iconics??? The guy with the sword on Burnt Offerings looks badass!!! I'm actually looking forward to the gatefold with all the Dungeon Iconics in issue #150.

Not only is Wayne doing our first twelve covers for Pathfinder, but he's also designing all twelve of our Pathfinder iconics. :-)

theres 12 icons !!!!!!!! ...what are they and chance at a peek

seekerofshadowlight wrote:

I would assume that they would cover the gamut of classes and races...

So Barbarian, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Sorceror, Rogue, Wizard. That is 10.

Since I believe that Psionics are OGL as well, I'll take a guess that rather than have 2 "duplicates", the last 2 will be a Psion and a Psychic Warrior.

thanks man i cant think tonight or count it seems .cant wait to see em .my group never uses the complete classes anyhow so 12 is plenty for us.

Just go the front page of our site to behold the fighter and the sorceress! Neat huh? We'll be sure to show off more in the coming days and weeks.

People don't like bards. ;-)

It's a shame. Bards are great. I still remember my favorite bard. His name was felicia, he looked fantastic in a red dress . . .

Er, wait a second . . didn't mean to threajack here.

So . . about these iconics. Are we going to get stat write up's on them, or just be taunted with their images?

Paizo Employee Creative Director

There will be a bard. Bards are my favorite PC class, and I'm the one in charge of Pathfinder. So don't worry about bards, my fellow thespians and musicians! THEY WILL HAVE THEIR DAY!

Ahem.

In any event, yes. Our iconics will have names, stats, personalities, and histories. They'll be appearing in both Pathfinder adventures and GameMastery modules as pregenerated characters, usually in groups of four to a book.

Any luck for warlocks?

Warlocks are WotC intellectual property, sot that would most likely be a "no"

Warlocks are not part of the SRD, so...doubt it a lot.

There are bards out there already having their day. Never underestimate the effect of a properly buffed bard with Weapon Finesse, Two weapon fighting and a lot of cunning retorts.

They end up being things like philospher kings and so forth. Fear the high level bard, for they can sway the mob. And the army. And hey - countersong works on Banshee wails, neh?

Oops. I guess that is my AD&D roots showing. I sometimes forget that Bards are a base class, since when I started playing, they were the orginal Prestige Class. (And had pretty damn high entry requirements too)

A quick side note... any chance of the Dungeon Iconics finally getting names and maybe some stats to go along with the gatefold??? please oh please.

I strongly disliked the iconics in Dungeon.

These two are beautifully rendered, but I still would personally prefer for each artist to paint whatever adventurers he or she see fit to. As I said in another post elsewhere about those iconics,

Archetype good.
Stereotype bad.

And all animals are created equal.
(But some are more equal than others.)

The woman in red with the flanged mace for a head is the one that got to me. The outfit looked like a deathtrap, and something that only a mysogynist would design.

A sorceress lives by charisma, so I can sort of see the value of wearing something that causes your boobs to make a surprise check a round ahead of the party.

Wearing a couple of spikes on your head while confronting Dragotha just looks a little foolhardy.

Over the years, Dragon and Dungeon have had some excellent armours and robes in the artwork. Things that could plausibly be worn by people who have the most dangerous job on their planet.
Look at the Israeli army for examples of strong women who are sexy in something other than a teddy and circlet.

Why try to take on Sports Illustrated on their turf.
Scantily clad ladies chained to altars with their limpid eyes gazing imploringly at the chiselled (Atlas approved) hardbody is SO Eighties.

Hmmm, I wonder if Bracers of Armor were actually created for Fabio & his colleagues so they could actually survive long enough to rescue said damsels while not wearing any armor...

We call the female cleric Tyralandi, after James's character in Erik's Age of Worms campaign. We call the male paladin Abilard, after Wes's short-lived first character in the same game. We call the female wizard hawt, because she is.

Other than that, we just call them by their class names. So, as of at this exact moment they don't have official names, but who knows what those wacky Dungeon guys are gonna do with their last issue? :D

No, really. Who knows? I don't!

Has it really been several years? I suppose it has: The first time I remember seeing them was in Age of Worms #1. Did they appear before that?

Hawt ... nice. Yes, but what does Sarah call the female wizard?

Using iconic characters serves two purposes:

1: It lets us establish a theme and personality for Dungeon or Pathfinder. Since the adventures and monsters and plots change every month, the iconics give the product a face and a soul, and really help to make the whole thing come together.

2: Not all of our artists play D&D. By using iconics, we can send them the character as reference and not have to worry about spending extra hours (and yes, it would amount to hours) describing in art orders what a wizard can and can't look like, for example.

I don't see the iconics as stereotypes at all; in fact, we're doing our best to move against the stereotype in many cases (such as having a young female wizard instead of an old bearded man, for example).

I think she calls the female wizard, "Psh. Whatever."

I know that taste is subjective. I expect you are in line with your markets more than I am. I just hope to not have anything absurd or implausible return as a thematic element in every issue. Thanks in advance.

You need to have a dwarven ranger. I've always wanted to see a dwarven ranger.

Named Pablo.

Just checked out the new iconics posted. I really like the sorceress. Sign me up for 10 ranks in Profession (Tattoo Artist). Yow!

"And Madness Followed" was all about bards having their day!

My group will certainly never look at bards the same way again, I can tell you...

Just curious, what happens after the first three months? With 12 iconics, it doesn't take long of using them for pre-gens to tap out. Even with providing them at various levels, that's only a year or so of material.

Well, they're going to get reused. They wouldn't be iconics if we only used them one time. :) And yes, at least in the modules we'll mix up the iconics we use, so if in one month we insert brb, brb, clr, drd, in the next month we might do drd, ftr, mnk, pal, and after that we might do pal, rgr, rog, sor.

Please include their assumed level progressions. If the full progression won't fit, please give enough detail until they're reprinted. By that I mean that since the first 4 in issue one will be statted at low level, please give enough progression to last until their turns come around again.

Any chance one of your miniature partners will come out with minis of the icon characters? That would make my day. Might even pull me out of the funk the cancellations have put me in.

You'll get the full level progressions over the course of several adventures, actually. For Pathfinder, the plan is to pick four iconics and stick with them through the entire campaign; each new volume of Pathfinder will have these four as the pre-gen characters, leveled up as appropriate for the adventure. When we start the next Adventure Path after Runelords, we'll pick four different iconics and repeat.

The GameMastery adventures will be doing the same, but I suspect they'll be picking a different four for each adventure.

What, that young, sexy female wizard with the big chest and tight dress that she seemed to be falling out of? I didn't particulalrly see that as a ground-breaking innovation in visualising the fantasy genre. Now, if she had dungarees and acne, I could see that as being a bit different. Probably wouldn't help sales much, though....

I know it's semantics... but from a game perspective, being sexy isn't something that helps being a wizard. If she were a sorcerer, then yeah. Stereotyped. Just like an old bearded man isn't a stereotyped sorcerer.

Of course, since sorcerers and wizards are so close anyway, it's probably too subtle a point and I probably just dug my hole deeper, but whatever.

I wasn't really complaining - I liked the picture (heh heh). I just thought that busty babes have been integral to the genre since the beginning of pulp magazines in the 1920s.
