My all-time cruelest player kill dates back to around 1998...

PC Name: *long forgotten
Class: fighter
Race: *long forgotten
Level: 1st or 2nd
Campaign World: Greyhawk
Circumstances: Random field encounter, marsh terraiin

It was the first session for a new player in a group of four relatively inexperienced players; I had them encounter a single Troll, to educate them that not all encounters should be fought by default - there are some that you should clearly run from if you can't parlay out of it.

Unfortunately, they didn't grasp the lesson...they attacked the troll. After round one, they got the idea.

Given a troll's propensity to attack single foes until dead, I randomly selected one party emmber to attack - it wound up being the new guy.

- Claw: hit
- Claw: hit, add additional rend damage (character HPs near 0)
- Bite: crit (damage drops HPs to well under -10)

DM description to the players:
" The roll grabs (character name here) by both shoulders - claws dig into his flesh as he screams...blood gushes from where its fingers puncture his shoulders as if it were squeezing a ripe fruit. His screams are cut short as it then bites down onto his head, ripping it off. His torso goes limp in its grasp as it chews.

Surviving Players:
"We run."

Dead Player:
*angry silence*

The new guy never came back. I feel guilty to this day for treating a new player so poorly; perhaps I should've fudged a few rolls for the sake of courtesy...

PC's Name: Ronnin
Race: Elf
Class: Rogue
Level: 7
Circumstances of Death: She fell from the top of the shadowclock in the city of magnimar during a battle with Xanesha the Lamia Matriarch (Rise of the Runelords Adventure path).

PC name: Lord Marduk
Class: cleric 17/ combat medic 3
race; halfling

The party was just getting into a fight with exploding zombie kobalds being blown up by a undead warlock with a rakshasa head grafted onto the stump of its arm (the PCs killed them both earlier and then retreated), when the tank fighter rolled a natural one on the will save to keep his helm of brillance from spontaneously combusting. (he took 32 points of fire damage, 2 more than the resistance confered by the helm, forcing the will save.) The party barely survived the 20 fireballs, 10 prismatic sprays, and 26 walls of fire, Marduk with the aid of a fortunate fate spell (if reduced to below -10 hp, a heal is automatically cast). Then there were the kobalds, immune to fire, set off by the prismatic sprays. The cleric was reduced to a puddle of hafling slag.

Scarab Sages

Name: Omak amad Adaram
Race: Orc
Class: Barbarian/Ranger
Level: 12
Setting: Homebrew (Otari)
Cause of Death: Critical fumble whilst fighting a summoned boar (not a dire boar, a regular boar) - percentile roll 100, instant PC death.

Name: Cleric - no-one from the game remembers his name...
Race: Human
Class: Cleric
Level: 15
Setting: Homebrew (Otari)
Cause of Death: Sacrificed to a Balor to allow the party to escape. His soul was blocked from normal resurrection, so the party undertook a special adventure to get him back. In the meantime, he existed as a planeless ghost with special powers. Player killed a Kraken with a crit using his ghost drain. Eventually came back as something similar to a Martyr from Exalted Deeds.

Name: Omak amad Adaram
Race: Orc
Class: Barbarian/Ranger/Hunter
Level: 22
Setting: Homebrew (Otari)
Cause of Death: Intelligence drained by a Dream Vestige and consumed as part of the cloud. Luckily the cloud was killed soon after and he was brought back by the cleric.

Scarab Sages

Name: Chath
Race: Human
Class: Rogue/Fighter
Level: 7
Setting: Homebrew - Red Hand of Doom
Cause of Death: Ran an encounter I added, using a Weredeinonychus Ettin. Despite the challenge rating, the party was unprepared and didn't know what they were facing - nearly a TPK, with only one PC (Irathanael) left standing desperately swining with a silvered mace. Best part is the PCs used up the only resurrection scroll in town, which they later needed for the Lord.

Name: Irathanael
Race: Elf
Class: Fighter
Level: 9
Setting: Homebrew - Red Hand of Doom
Cause of Death: Charged in to the final battle in Brindol against the General and his Hill Giant and Ogre companions, a few attacks of opportunity later he was down and the General used coup de grace with a big grin on his face.

Name: Caraphus
Race: Halfling
Class: Rogue/Assassin
Level: 11
Setting: Homebrew - Red Hand of Doom
Cause of Death: Ripped to pieces by Aspect of Tiamat.
Originally an NPC who assissted throughout the adventure, joined the party as a PC after Irathanael's death.

Scarab Sages

Name: Niktcq
Race: Kobold
Class: Rogue
Level: 7

CoD: Turned to stone by medusa.

CoD: Turned to stone by medusa.

Name: Satarel
Race: Aasimar
Class: Cloistered Cleric
Level: 6
Setting: Homebrew - Sinister Spire
CoD: Turned to stone by medusa.

This encounter was a near TPK except for the dwarf barbarian (108 hp, +11 fort save) who single-handedly mauled the medusa and her minions. It was great to watch an encounter he was built for, unfortunately he was DMPC. But the party did live.

FateCon 2008 hosted this particular TPK in which the healer was completely inept and caused everyone else to die horribly. Yay! I'm so glad to be done with that campaign!

PC Name: Dorin ir'Adan
Class: Warblade
Race: Human
Level: 2nd
Campaign World: Eberron - Beneath Sharn...
Circumstances: Dorin found himself left by himself inside a chamber with four ghouls. Two of the ghouls flanked him and paralyzed him. Then, they climbed up on him, dug into his throat with their teeth and ripped his throat out (coup de grace). He died.

Name: Lezidius Faustus
13th level Human Evoker
Homebrew game 3.X

Circumstances of demise: Summoning the golden circle

Not too long after the big white bull episode that was burned into your memories a while back, The partie's battlemage (ahem...evoker) is assisting int he exploration of a ruined tower that seems to have a 20 foot circular shaft descending at least 100' down below the earth.

Using his impressive runelore knowledge, (i rolled a 1 for him ) he reads runes on the small podium near the shaft. "Step off, to summon the golden circle." he looks at me with what can only be described as resignation, then steps "off".

After falling 220' to the bottom of the shaft, he was crippled with several broken bones. The pack of doormats, I mean ghouls couldnt resist having dinner delivered and went to work.

The party cleric looks again at the podium and correctly translates "Step here to summon the golden circle" and steps on the assigned area, causing the 20' diameter disc of solid gold to levitate up to the top.

Upon seeing the now skeletonized corpse of what was once the party leader, the fighter says sotto voice "Hi guys, I am dead because I am a stupid wizard. Please take all of my stuff and use my bones as wind chimes. Oh! and make the fighter party leader". The wizards player then blew Mt. Dew all over the battlemat and had to leave the table.

IT only got better when the group met the senile lich in the basement library.

Thanks, I really wanted to remember that bull episode while I was eating. Here, have my ramen - I'm not hungry anymore.

That encounter has some good opportunity for PC death (even TPK)...

Spoiler:
my players where literally out of breath (and other things too) after fighting Azarr Kull, and then Tiamat shows up and stomps on them. Sweet!

We had to end the session right there. So there are 4 beaten up PC's standing around the Aspect. In order to have a chance I'm going to let the dead players new character just pop in via teleport mishap. Fun!

Be sure to post back what happens! I love that adventure!

Name: Kiernan o' the dales
Human Bard 7

Cause of demise: OOC discussion bleeds into game

So the party encounters a group of stone giants on an old farm during the course of our normal adventure. The Bard decides to "negotiate" for access to the cellar of the farmhouse they are squatting on.

The player is having a raucous (and rather funny) ooc conversation while they are trying to decide how to go about this. Gradually, the conversation begins to slip more and more in character.

After hearing this group of tiny bugs talk amongst themselves about:

a.) the relative merits of just killing them.
b.) How ugly they were.
c.) how stupid giants are in the first place.
d.) that there was tons of food AND captives in the cellar.

The giants, understandeably, struck pre-emptively. The look on the player's face was AWESOME!

DM - I need a reflex save from all three of you.

Player 1 (fighter) rolled a 17, made it!
Player 2 (sorceror) rolled a 14 made it!
Player 3 (Bard) rolled a 6, what happened?

DM - The hulking hurler that you called "a walking mountain of misbegotten, half-retarded gravel just threw and outhouse at you...and hit.

Players 1&2 - laugh hysterically
Player 3 - But...okay damage?

DM - 82 hp, you are not only dead, you are wicked witch dead...oh! And not only is he trying to pull off a section of the farmhouse - his friends have their clubs out and are advancing with grins on.

Whole party (minus bard) RUN AWAY!

I won't get into the details of what was done to the body, lets just say it wasn't pretty - or humane.

LOL! the greek brothel incident later that campaign was better, remember if you ever DO go to a brothel in another country - make sure it is not a gay one...full of vampires.

You could have saved some time by just saying it was a emo vampire brothel. You see, vampires come in two flavors - BDSM and emo. The flavor is determined by gender, much like drow, or power rangers fruit snacks.

Sidenote - I once had the party hunt down an assassin's cabal made up of emo vampires. Full of blood rage after seeing the pure black decor with "god, the pain of unliving" written in blood on it, they charged into one vampire ambush after another.

PC name: Jamacianmetan
Class/level: Barbarian 21
COD: The party was fighting on the underside of a plane of force in midair, held up by a huge magical current of wind. The colossal solar/flesh jelly amalgam with 666 hp (think of a lump of flesh the size of a house, give it little piggy eyes and put it on a golden bed/throne carried by thousands of Quasits) smashed him to pulp with a giant tower of bone after he fell out of the magical updraft, used featherfall to float back in, and made a wind-propelled charge attack and a 20 - 20 - confirm crit for X8 damage. And then his soul was sucked into a doomsday device.

PC's Name Bal'Quora, Riaan, Tylith
Race Kalashtar, Human, Half-elf

Class Soulknife, Ninja, Bard
Level 6, 5, 6

Circumstances of Death The encounterd a Vile Wight (BoVD) and after it hit them once with its line attack, they said, "It can probably only do that once a day." So they stayed in a line, then when it blasted them again, they all died

Setting (and Adventure Path, if you're using one)
Eberron

PC name: Jamacainmetan
Class; barbarian 21
COD: The party was fighting a classic party (rogue, arcane, tank, cleric) made up of undead, using the dread (undead) templates from Green Ronin's advanced beastiary. There was a dread Bodak rogue/master thrower, a Dread Ghost sorcerer/argent savant, a dread ghast cleric, and a dread mummy barbarian/frostrager. Jamacainmetan decided to get into a "which barbarian can deal lethal damage first?" fight with the mummy. Bad idea, since the mummy had unholy toughness, DR 8/-, and took half damage from all physical sources. It almost died when the two barbarians, grappling, were launched straight up and fell back down, but was healed by the dread ghast cleric. It proceeded to lay the smack down on Jamacianmetan, killing him.

Almost forgot one from last adventure (the one with the fat solar)
Name: Thorn Tribeless
Class: Ranger 22
COD: engulfed and absorbed by a solar/flesh jelly amalgam. Couldn't make the reflex save to avoid, or the fort save to avoid being consumed by the enveloping flesh.

COD: The party was fighting Dragotha, who I advanced to Great wyrm status and approprated to use as the BBEG in my campagian. Jamaicanmetan was hit by a full attack, was healed, hit by breath weapon, healed, hit again, snatched, roasted/acidicly melted alive (breath weapon admixture) and killed, revivified at 1/2 hp, killed by a full attack, revenanced at -1 hp, healed, and killed Dragotha with an attack from prone.

PC name: Earnila Nailo
Class: Ninja 12/fighter 8
Race; elf
COD: despite having evasion and a good ref save, failed two saves against Dragotha's enhanced Breath weapon, was healed, got an indomibility, hit by a wing, a wing, which triggered the indomibility and left her at 1 hp, and the tail, which did 5d6+66 damage. Instant kill.

PC's Name: Erasmus

PC's Names: Lian; Pickles
Races: Halflings
Classes: Wizard; Cleric
Levels: 10th
Circumstances of Death: At the appearance of an Aspect of Tiamat, Pickles used his surprise round to get next to the dragon shaman, who was still under the effects of a confusion spell. Lian, knowing the cleric of travel had a teleport spell moved next to them. Pickles, in his first regular round, tried to cast defensively (even though the Aspect was still flat-footed) and failed, losing his dimension door. In the next round he failed his Concentration check to cast teleport defensively. The dragon shaman managed to escape.
Adventure: Red Hand of Doom set in Faerun.

Paizo Employee Director of Narrative

PC’s Name: Vikram
Race: Human
Classes: Bard/Barbarian
Level: 7
Circumstances of Death: Attempting to collect shocker lizards below Fort Rannik to release above with the intention of using the critters to take out some ogres, the party found itself outnumbered by the small, yet dangerous creatures. Vikram took a couple of jolts before ending up with five of them lined up before he and the dwarf in the party. 10d8 electricity damage and a one on the reflex save dropped the poor fellow to -19. Using great resources, the cleric of Desna arranged a reincarnation returning Vikram to the world of the living in the body of a halfling.
Adventure: Pathfinder #3: The Hook Mountain Massacre

Paizo Employee Director of Narrative

Oh, and the party sorcerer lost his air elemental familiar to a Graul and his donkey rats last session.

Name of PC: Ronnin (again)
Class/Level: Rogue 7/ Temple Raider 1
Cause: She got too close to Jaagrath Kreeg (An ogre barbarian), and was nearly ripped in half by his Ogre Hook as a result (he hit her with 10 point power attack going, his damage bonus took her from full health to -2, the rolled damage put her well below -10). Luckily the Cleric had just gotten 5th level spells and raised her after the battle, so I am sure she will be gracing this board again (Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path).

I warned them gun-fighting would be hazardous.... :P

PC Name: Vargus
Human
Brawler
Level 1
Circumstances: Shot to death by other players after trying to extort money from a local schoolteacher. The shootout took place in a busy town centre resulting in one player death, two players in jail, one in a coma.
Setting: Wild West

PC Name: Trent
Human
Trader
Level 1
Killed in a gunfight whilst acting as a Deputy for the local Sheriff
Setting: Wild West

I'll be here each week ^^

PC Name: Annoying Wizard wannabe (yeah, I forgot)
Human
Battle Mage
Level 4
Setting: Forgotten Realms (Night Below campaign)

Appropriated the cursed ring from the first bandit hideout (yeah, the one that enrages outsiders) and was going through a side adventure (an old 1st edition converted to third) when an enemy wizrd used a scroll to summon a devil. As soon as it popped in it focused all of its energy on destroying the character with the ring. In fact, it ended up swallowing him whole after beating his lifeless body against the wall a few times. The round before it swallowed him, the rest of the party was able to defeat the summoner so the devil decided they were not worth the effort and wandered off into the sunset...I really did not like that character much, but it was pure coincidence that he was wearing the ring and they could not defeat the magic user before he summoned his help.

Dark Archive

Name: Mrryraar
Race:Wookiee
Class and Level: Jedi Consular 4
Circumstances: Picked a fight with a bunch of dark side cultists. While the other players were busy dealing with the cannon fodder he leaped over their heads and attacked the cult leader (Force Adept 5) and his body guards (two wookiee Soldier 3/Dark Side Marauder 2) by himself. The resulting force duel led to multiple bursts of force lightning being thrown and a few force strikes being invoked. Three on one, all higher level and you can guess the rest.
Setting: Star Wars (duh) about the time of The Thrawn Crisis.

Dark Archive

Name:Cruth
Race:Half-Orc
Class: Barbarian
Circumstances of Death:Tried to use a barbarian as a rogue and decided that he had enough hit points to survive any traps and opened a trapped door. Big rock dropped on him. End of Story.
Setting: Scarred Lands.

Liberty's Edge

PC's Name: Knox

Race: Human

Class: Rogue

Level: Seven

Circumstances of Death: Death by Falling Treant

Setting (and Adventure Path, if you're using one): Homebrew

Knox was trying to flank a treant in a march (the treant had rotten heartwood, stole it from some old 1e adventure, i think) to get his sneak attack bonus. he had already taken heavy damage, and was out of healing (the parties cleric was unconscious). anyway, the barbarian (raged, enlarged and bull strenghtened) decides to tackle the treant just as knox maneuvers behind it. poor knox has an enlarged barbarian and a treant fall on him.

epilogue: he was reincarnated as a pixie. i should have found a way to let him live...

Dark Archive

Name: Ayla Stonehammer
Race: Dwarf
Class/Level: Barbarian LVL 4
Campaign: Homebrew
Circumstances of death: Flanked and cut in half by Gnoll fighter lvl 2

It's the third(!) PC I've killed off that she has played...hopefully with her new one (Elf Scout LVL 4) it will take me a while. :)

actually, knox tended to get knocked over quite a bit, pre-reincarnation. heck, a mime kicked his butt on market day in some town once...

post reincarnation? dude was vicious...

PC name: jamacainmetan (yet again-his unexplanable dissapearance from this forum was due to a one month hiatus in the campaign)
level: barbarian 22
COD: The party was fighting dwarven defenders in a tunnel chokepoint. Jamacainmetan dimension doored behind the lines and killed off the two warmages. Next round, the 22nd level dwarves and the 20th level human fighters who could not fit into the narrow confines of the tunnel turned around, and, over the next three rounds, knocked him unconcious twice (revived by healing) and finally killed him. One revivification later, he was about to die again, when the cleric decided he had had enough and cast his 4th maximized flame strike, killing the 5 human knights, each with only 320 max hp. Now, faced with only the 5 dwarven defenders (with 510 max hp), each with around 90 hp by this point, the two fighters went to town, killing all but one in the time it took for the advanced elite holy half celestial admant clad 12 headed pryohydra to squeeze down the hallway. The cleric then opened a gate to the negative energy plane directly beneath it, quite possibly saving the party from death at the hands of a creature with 515 hp, 12 attacks at +36 each, and fast healing 44. (This was with half the party - two fighters and a cleric. I had expected them to retreat at some point, but...)
