What kind of adventures do you want to see in Dungeon magazine?

Dungeon Magazine General Discussion

1 to 50 of 218 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | next > last >>

As an addition to the thread started about favourite Dungeon adventures of 2006 , I propose a thread about what kinds of adventures Dms out there are looking for to bolt on their campaigns.
Now i love the way Dungeon magazine adventures can be run with just the three core books and you don't have to have all the myriad of sourcebooks, but the information given is just enough to make you decide if you like a certain thing, like sea or undersea adventures.
I am really bored of the standard dungeon crawls but I can appreciate temfor younger gamers. They are great to cut your teeth on.
But hers my wish list.
More battle/ war themed adventures where the party are the focal point of a big clash of enemies - Tides of war did this great, but I would like more in the vein of a kind of seige of Helms deep kind of thing where the party are instrumental in defending a castle from being overun. It would include a nice castle battlemap which doubles up for D&d minis.
I loved Belt of Champions but how about something else with a gladiator theme or maybe for a change chariots!A race with a fold out map with various d&d monsters as steeds! Think of ben hur or maybe the pod race from star wars!It would also need a pull out map.
While I am on that theme an aerial race with dragons! with a simple rule mechanic for flying counters and a scaled down pul out map.
Or how about an aerial theme where the party mounted on griffins or other flying creatures assault an aerial fortress or a mountain top castle, which then leads to them breaking in.
Like Storm lords castle but with extra crunchy mechanic of aerial combat.
More really good overland trek adventures like here be monsters.
A covert ops type adventure where the party have to rely on stealth to break into somewhere.
A rogues only style crime adventure.
Anyway thats my two coppers worth any one else got something they want to see?

Dark Archive

more seaborne and underwater adventures
more astral/planar adventures

Scarab Sages

...Massive bogs and swamps with plenty of heat, humidity, flash storms, weird monsters, pestilence, etc. You know the kind: the ones that take days to traverse their entire length and/or width.

Thoth-Amon

Liberty's Edge

More Styes, More Styes, Styes, More Styes, More Styes and More Styes.

Also something Planescapey, and some more C'thulhuey stuff, and more Vikings.

And more Styes.

Grand Lodge

Did we mention Styes?

More Styes!

I'd like to seem some more adventures with a Cthulu feel. More investigative type adventures. Especially active mysteries, ones where what is being solved is intertwined with something going down so that the investigation is sprinkled with action scenes or chases or battles on jungle gyms or some such.

I'd like to see another epic module, like we saw with "Quicksilver Hoursglass." Something set for PCs in the upper 20s.

Currently swirling like so many blind idiot gods about a certain black hole....

Also circling the same black hole. The latter actually made it to the point of singularity.

I would like to see were the characters need to break out of prison or even jail.

This Spring or Summer.

PS The question though is, what are you working on? There's only one sure way to get the adventures you want.... ;)

Correction. To quote Yoda,"There is another."

Try Nick Logue's "Chains of Black Maw" Dungeon adventure if you haven't.

I've said it before and I shall say it again! More vile adventures: Lovecraftian terrors! Full frontal nudity! Unspeakbly terrible crimes! Inhumanly twisted desires!

I want adventures that will make Clive Barker sigh: "Man... it's just isn't right..."

I tried that once with a lumber baron who's twisted longings led him to do unspeakable things to dryads, who's homes later became furniture for his office....

It was killed in committee for going a bit too far.

Cool! looking forward to those!
I have my players about to get embroiled in a war in the next couple of months. They are pretty high levels 21st down to about 10th so I need something where they are part of an army or a strike force!

Jeremy Mac Donald wrote:

I totally agree with Jeremy...

A wierd as hell adventure where the PCs awaken in an abandoned village (Silent Hill-ish) or have the group caught somewhere (a jungle, an island, the Uderdark) with a mysterious nemisis chasing them.

Whatever happens, when the adventure is over, it should let the PCs (and players) asking themselves "Did that just really happen?"

A Backdrop for Exag: City of Clay supports the new series. “The Distraction” puts the PCs behind the enemy lines of a gnoll army.

This was repeated somewhere else but given the "Mythos" and "war" themes tossed about in this thread I thought it best to re-paste it here. Just a couple of months away....

War/strike force/seige breaking with a bit of a political backdrop would be incredible. A 3-adventure arc would be super.

Oh, and also.......................MORE STYES PLEASE!!!

More Planescapey, and just plain Planes, adventures. Maybe something related to the Elemental Planes articles that are running in Dragon?

I would like to see an adventure set in a high-altitude environment. I want to see how PCs can handle cold and thin air. It would make low-level CR creatures more formidable if they are adapted to these conditions.

I would also like to see some classics revisted and expanded upon.

"Dwellers of the Forbidden City" would be a good candidate. It could be made into an adventure that would provide several play sessions. Imagine the party searching something like Angkor Wot(SP?). The first challenge is to locate where in the city the target is. A rival group could be searching as well. In addition, the big, bad thing that devastated the city would still be around. The parties would have to do their digging and fighting without alerting the big nasty to their presence.

I would not want to see: murder mysteries, planar adventures, prevent-the-evil-wizard-from-opening-a-gate-to-Hell, and epic-level adventures.

Hard to be an editor of Dungeon magazine as I see a lot of people asking for murder mysteries, planar adventures and epic level play in this thread!

You can't please all the people all the time , but I for one am very very happy with the quality of the magazine.

Actually, every time I ask where I can find "Dungeon" magazine at Barnes and Noble, I get the "another freakin pervert" look. Which is fine, cause I am. I feel bad for all of our loyal buyers who actually aren't freakin perverts though.

As if you have to go and buy a DUNGEON magazine that often. Sheesh! ;)

By the way, how do you get to be an official Contributor? Is it once you have more than 10 adventures published? Damn, I've got a long way to go!

Good question! I think you have to high ball em. I asked to be called "Cruel Overlord of Dungeon Freelancers" or just "Better Than Prett" and ended up with "Contributor" which is cool I guess. ;-)

No, actually I don't know, I think if you shoot someone important an email it can happen pretty quick.

Isn't it funny how, the first couple of times, you almost feel guilty when they give you that look? And how quickly it just starts to toll right off your back until you wind up taking a perverse sense of pride in that withering glance, like a badge of honor. "Yes, I am the man they seek to warn your children about in Sunday School. No, not that man. I would never do that. The less creepy one. Seriously. I misspoke. You know what, I'll just get my magazine and leave."

I'd like more "journey to destroy the evil artifact"[ Lord od the Rings]kind of adventure(like ILL MADE GRAVES ) and more role playing adventures( the one in AGE OF WORMS that the pcs go to the party at Zich's mansion is awesome). Also, adventures with a darker mood seem very attractive( The one that has the halfling Peck and the MURDER ON OAKBRIDGE).

GReat Idea creating this thread..( the guys who write adventures should definetely take a look)

Nic: Thanks for the information on the extra stuff.

Mideon: Thanks for the link saved me time looking it up.

In a word, GREYHAWK. Preferably something significant that actually moves the Non-Living Greyhawk campaign setting forward. Something like a 2nd Greg Vaughan trilogy would do nicely. Set up in Iuz's lands would be even better.

I'd like a few 'lost city' adventures set in obscure places like the Sea of Dust and places off the standard map. Greg Vaughan was the first to plow ground in this area with his "the Coming Storm" I hope to see some ruined temples or cities of the Suel in the former Imperium become classics that we speak of for years to come.
Incidentally, props to GGG and his nod to B4/Cynidicea several issues ago...

I'd like about 20 additional levels of Maure Castle. You hear that RJK. Paizo, please pay the man and print his stuff.

Given that we're a species that seems to like trilogies and things that come in 3's, I think a third venture down the soggy and forlorn streets of the Styes is certainly in order as well.

To echo the sentiments of another previous poster, more classic updates. Dwellers of the Forbidden City would be good. I'd be very satisfied with the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth, the original Lost City (B4), or X4/X5 Master of the Desert Nomads/Temple of Death... probably a fool's wish...

Adventures that force the group to be more than just hack and slash. And adventures that are set in Greyhawk city.

As for the format of the adventures I would like to see. Anyone remember those old pamphlet adventures that came out at the start of 3.0 by AEG? I kinda liked those, they were simple, and real easy to pick up and run and they were SHORT and to the point. I bet if Dungeon played with a format they could cram a couple more adventures in every issue. I mean, most dms change a lot of the adventure anyways, so why have a 2 page "Adventure Background". Just an idea.

Aww, man, I love those things! It's not as easy to get the ol' gaming group together as it was back in high school, and the fact that everyone's schedules actually free up at the same time does not necessarily mean that someone has an adventure in mind to run. All hail the mighty one-shot!

That having been said, I kinda like the level of detail put into Dungeon. Granted, it sometimes gets excessive...while it's nice to know exactly the steps the villain took to assemble his Intricate Plan of Elaborate Evil, unless you're running a game with a Scooby-Doo-style "I would've gotten away with it, too" scene wherin the baddie reveals his sinister and amazingly detailed plot, I find that a great deal of the background information is good for the DM to look at, go "Hmm, that's pretty cool," and move on.

As for adventures I'd like to see... I like it when adventures are broken up into smaller, easily manageable parts, ala the first installments of both the ST and AoW APs, allowing time for in-town character interaction, decreasing the risk of TPKs, and generally letting the players feel like they are exploring a world, piece by piece, and that they are somewhat setting the pace of the adventure. Whispering Cairn, in particular, shines at this task, sending characters to explore and re-explore locations.

As I've mentioned previously, I'm a total junkie for "fix the town" games, where characters face tasks that can be dealt with through a combination of combat prowess, skill use, and diplomacy, and treasure might be used to build a library, strengthen the militia, or restore a church, rather than dumped into a +2 longsword.

I would like to see the occasional entry with a more traditional, fairy-tale-esque fantasy feel to it, replete with centaurs and satyrs, giants and dragons, questing knights and fair maidens. I know knights, dragons, and princesses are supposedly the tiredest cliches in the book, but I've rarely played in a game where characters actually fought a dragon, or were even geographically close to one, and I've never been part of a game that literally rescued a fair damsel in distress (or a dude in distress, which would actually be somewhat preferable :) ).

A game that focuses on a particular nonhuman cultural setting, such as a village of elves or gnomes, could be an intriguing departure from the human-dominated scenarios most adventures offer.

I also enjoy games that have a bit of romance to them, be they like that adventure a couple years back featuring a wedding between an elf and a human, at least one of which was related to a PC, or something like the STAP, which explicitly states that certain characters might make appropriate romantic interests for PCs, and gives a bit of info on how they might act in a relationship. I'm not saying it should be the #1 focus of the module, just that it can add a nice subplot to an adventure.

^ (my 2 CP)

I really enjoyed the recent Siege of the Spider Eaters adventure, probably because of the big revelation point when the party realized what was going on.

I would like to see more adventures along those lines.

I would like to see adventures that use the following words more:

proboscis
propensity
marzipan
tureen
condescending

I'm sure the clever writers for Dungeon can probably find more words, too.
