Gamer Demographic Poll

3.5/d20/OGL

1 to 50 of 62 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

I was reading another thread in which several posters happened to indicate their age. This got me thinking about my own D&D (and RPG) experiences. When I was 9 I played several RPG's with my cousin (he was 12). Just two players neither of whom is mature enough to even see a PG-13 move. Yeah it was hard. We stopped playing after several months and I never really thought about it again until a little more than a year ago. Now I'm back into the swing of things and it's so much more fun playing a mature version of the D&D I liked all those years ago.

So I'm curious about what experiences you all are having out there. What's the average age of your gaming group? How many people? How gender mixed are your groups? Whatever other information you'd like to relate will be fascinating I'm sure. To start it off:

I'm 31. I play in two games, one as DM.

In the first game there are currently 5 players and 1 DM (though we've been up to 7 players). Two players are women. Average age: ~33. Max age: 42; min age: 22. We play once every other week.

Second game which I DM has four players and me. One woman (she plays in the other game as well). Average age: ~30. Max age: 42; min age: 17. We play once a week.

My current group:

Ages: 28, 31, 31, 35, 62.
People: 5, 4 males and 1 female.
This group is very "me centered"-- Me, my father, my girlfriend, a high school friend, and friend via gaming.

My old "alt group":
Ages: 25, 26, 26, 31, 62; 3 males, 2 females.
This group was Will centered; Me, my Dad, Will, Will's wife, Will's old gaming friend.

My weekly board game group:
Ages: 25, 25, 28, 31, 32, 35, 62; 4 male, 3 female.
Lots of couples and loose connections; me & my girlfriend, my dad, Ben and his wife, Jarret, and Emily.

I got started young (5th grade, about 11 years old). The same is true for Kev and (I believe) Will and his wife. Dad (the 62) got into it shortly after its release-- say, in the mid 1970s. My girlfriend got into gaming after college; Kev's wife got into only via Kev, in her mid 20s. Emily got into gaming is High School (I think), while Jerret has never played an RPG.

I am usually the DM, however there is one other guy that I play with that DMs fairly often.

Currently I am in one game which I am DMing and we meet once every 2 weeks. There are 6 other players -- 3 guys and 3 girls. There is one other guy that will sometimes join our group but he is currently taking a break. I am the "old" one at 37 and I don't think that there is anyone younger than 30 in our group. 2 of the women are wives, but my wife was gaming before I met her and the other wife was playing with us before she got married and her husband has been playing with us ever since they got hitched. Off and on, most of us have been gaming together for the past 8 years or so.

My current gaming group:

Me (DM): 27.
Players: 42, 42, 30, 29.

We've all been playing since we were at least 10. :P

Two groups.

1st
Alternating DM per campaign (my best friend and I)
me: 20, others: 21, 19,19

2nd group
dm:29
players:20, 21, 21

the dm of my second group has been playign a very long time. My best friend i have been playing for around 5 years.

Friday night SCAP group:
DM (me): 40
players: 28, 33, 41, 49

Sunday afternoon game w/ the kids:
DM (me): 40
players: 9, 11, 41, 49

There was a thread called "average age of a dungeon reader" or such floating around here somewhere that had a lot of data as to the age of the readers of the magazine. Those numbers skewed toward the mid-30's, but my understanding from the stuff the Paizo folks have posted is that their demographic tends to be mid-20's.

Mind you, these are each sub groups of the general gamer population, but it might be interesting to you.

Bi-weekly Saturday Greyhawk
DM (me) Age 39
Players: 43 (male), 40 (female), 36 (female), 39 (female), 38 (male)

Bi-weekly Saturday Forgotten Realms
DM Age 38 (male)
Players: same as above, but replace the 38 year old male with the 39 year old male (me)

Weekly SCAP Wednesday night (on hiatus until October)
DM (me) Age 39
Players: 38 (male), 36 (female), 40 (female)

Bi-weekly Greayhawk Age of Worms adventure path
(Usually Saturday afternoons)
DM: 34 (Me)
4 players (sometimes five): All 26 to 28, only one female (my sister)

I've been playing/DMing since I was nine or ten years old (about a quarter-century!)

My players have been playing with me for about ten years. Only one has played a little before meeting me.

Yes, I was afraid that someone might have asked a similar question before, but I figured I'd just bull my way through anyway.

I recognize the bias involved in this poll: not the general gamer population, not even general paizo subscribers, only folks who read the messageboards. Nonetheless, I'm really enjoying hearing how the rest of ya'll have fun out there. Thanks!

Your question is slightly different, so it's not a big deal (also, if memory serves, there's a significant portion of thread eaten up debating the "maturity" level of Dungeon).

Besides, there aren't any dumb questions.*

*Unless they involve the existence of munchkins. Those are dumb questions and should be avoided.

Don't talk about halflings that way! ;)

So do you have any data to add Sebastion? I promise Paizo isn't giving me any money for asking. Though maybe...huh. Gotta go make a call.

Which is pretty interesting when you think about it. Typically internet polls are skewed toward the younger, tech saavy crowd. This seems to be the opposite. I wonder if it is likely that more DMs are likely to read these boards & subscribe and perhaps are on average the older members of the group (with plenty of exceptions).

Just a thought...

Hi All,

I’ve been playing since I was 9 and GMing since I was 10. :-)

My biweekly SCAP group is as follows:

GM (me) Age 36
Players: 40(female), 33 (male), 30 (female), 35 (male), 36 (male).

My monthly one-shots group:

GM (me)
Players: 41 (female), 40 (male), 38 (male), 32 (female), 36 (male), 38 (male).

The first group has been together for almost 3 years now. The second group has been together as a whole almost 12 years with some of us having been friends for 23 years now.

Good gaming,
Mark

My dad played for a few years in the late 70s/early 80s before he got too busy with work and family. He let me sit in on his games when I was very young, and I started playing with my friends when I was about 10.

My longest game group was during high school and beyond. We played every week, and people would come and go from week to week as we had two DMs so the group was large. At the time we stopped playing our group consisted of a 21 year old male (me), 20F, 2x16M, 16F, 4x18M. This was 2nd Ed transitioning to 3.0, so the demographic may well have been different back then.

My current group plays about once a month, and consists of 2x21F, 20F, 21M, 28M (me). So an average member of our group would be 22. The other guy in the group plays warhammer on weekends too so that's why we don't play so often, but it suits us, we are all busy with university or work.

Don't know about that, but good musings nonetheless. That sentence was actually just an excuse to type the word 'nonetheless'. It's one of those words I just like to see in print.

Anyway.....
Current group - Me (holding the DM reigns for almost a year now) - 30m. We've recently lost one of our players temporarily due to Ren Faire and home related stresses, 31m. The pro disc golfer who misses games every now and then because of tournaments, I think is 28 or 29. The two brothers that we brought in a few years ago 28 and 35, both M. A friend from my old job, 24m. And a new addition to my current campaign, an old player from the old days of our huge party gaming group before the social rift opened, 36m.

I hate that I don't get to game with women anymore. I really enjoy the perspective and focus on role-playing that comes from having mixed genders at a gaming table. My wife used to play with us, but either got burned out, didn't like it all that much, is too shy or just doen't really want to hang out with the guys I game with 10 hrs each Sunday.

Sean Mahoney wrote:

That is interesting. It could also be because your average 30 year old gamer probably grew up around computers too. Sure they weren't the same computers as the ones around now, but I don't know many gamers in their 20s or 30s who are significantly less tech savvy than, say, a 14 year old. In fact many jobs today require computer literacy. When I meet someone I assume they are at least a little tech savvy until proven otherwise.

I think the stereotype of "only kids understand tech" is pretty much disappearing. You have to go back to my parent's generation (ie. people in their late 40s to 50s) to find people who grew up without a computer in their home. I'm talking about the middle class of course, which seems to me to be the background most gamers come from.

Once you understand the basic concept of a technology then learning new versions of it is like familiarizing yourself with a new model TV or mobile phone. An iPod is really just a walkman; an xbox360 is just a more advanced superNES. If you can use one you can use the other. Most adult gamers understand computers enough to use them in their work, so it's no surprise they are also aware of the internet.

Or maybe the D&D population is simply ageing. It's an old game, after all, and rewards a certain level of maturity and intellect.

One group

Average age: ~20
Ages: 13, 14(me), 15, and about 40

Enjoy it. Before you know it you'll be one of the Old Gamers Club b*tching about how much cooler it was when you were young and had time to play whenever ya wanted. But, from sticking around here, you've probably realized that by now.

Group 1 -
"Vagabonds of the Standard"
Me (DM) 35
5 players are all male - 24-33

Group 2 -
"Blacklock Loreseekers vs. Rappan Athuk"
DM is 30
4 players (me included) are all male - 28-35

Group 3 -
currently in hiatus
DM (me again)
5 players, 4 males and 1 female - 28-39

I've been playing since 1979. My 1 female player has been playing the least amount of time (4 years).

Me (DM) 34
Group: 4 players, all late 20s, early 30s

We play via OpenRPG each week and use a forum to keep the game going during the week. Myself and two others have a similar pattern of D&D playing: played as a young teen, game lost out to other interests in late HS and college; came back to gaming in late 20s (30 for me); trying to balance gaming and family and work and...

I actually found out about all the different editions to D&D through the Baldur's Gate computer game. That rekindled a spark and now I cannot imagine not playing.

I personally have been playing since the age of 14 (I am now a 33 year old male).

My 2 gaming groups in Canada were:

1)Montreal
Dm (me)
5 Players (4 males ages 29,30,30,32,38), and 1 Female (age 28).

2) Edmonton
Dm (me)
4 Players (2 males ages 33,28), and 2 Female (ages 28,29)

When I moved to the United Arab Emirates
Dm (male 27)
4 Players (all male ages 27,32,33,38).

Now we are in Qatar and i'm still looking for a group =(

Hope that helps.
Be safe all.

Me - 39 (oh my god I will 40 next year) - good things elves live so long (hence the avatar selection).

In Dubai - and alas the group Ragnarok Raider references meets at a time when I can't commit to play (though I have a few times).

My group back in the real world was all grown ups (at least chronologically) and had real jobs - more defining of behavior than age in many cases - except for one medical student.

Thats was the best group I participated in.

And one of the things I miss about New Jersey.

The gaming opportunities in Arabia are lamentably limited.

Me (DM) 47
Wife (currently Monk 16) 42
Brother in law (Ftr 10/Rog 6) 47
His Wife (Clr 16) 47
Their oldest daughter (Wiz 16) 25
Their son (Bar 16) 23

Sometimes (when she can get home)
Their youngest daughter (whatever PC we can fit in) 21

I think its amazing that I have more female players than male players (with all the threads I've seen on females and D&D). I think it helps that the kids were around us playing when they were kids.

My group consists of:
DM: Me (age 16)
Players (in order of their participation in the group): My best friend (16), his brother (12), his neighbor (14), my nemesis (16). Also, my best friend has expressed that he's going to introduce an unknown to the game, age 16-17. That brings the average age to 14.8, which is about how old I was when I started playing! :D

I DM two groups. I am 30.

NYC Campaign is one woman 31, and one man 34

Kalamazoo Campaign (unfortunately this one only meets about once a year for serious marathon gaming) 3 men: 27, 31, 34

I like small groups

I have two groups currently. One of them is currently in limbo between finishing the last game and starting the next one, but we play twice a month on the Fridays that AREN'T reserved for Iron Kingdoms and the age/genders are as follows:

28m, 27f, 20f, 23m (me), 24m, 21m.

My Iron Kingdoms group (which meets every other Friday) is:

23m (me, the DM), 22f, 20f, 24m, 21m, 21m.

Been playing (discontinuously) ages 13-17, 35-?? (I'm now 40)

My regular game is a series of several ongoing campaigns one on one with my son, which is now limited to when we see each other on vacations. (Me 40, son 16, I DM 3/4 of the time).

Occasionally, I DM for an assortment of 5-7 nephews, nieces, and their cousins and step-siblings (17f, 16m, 15m, 15f, 14m, 10m x 2), and once conned my dad (68m) into joining.

I recently moved away from a group in Michigan for which it's difficult to give a good demographic because I didn't ask people's ages, but roughly 2 men in early 20s (co-DMs), 3 men in their early-mid 20s, me (40m), a woman about my age (parent of two teens in the group), 3 boys, late teens, one girl, late teens, an assortment of other irregular players mostly early 20s and male. It was a wild and fun group, interesting to play with such a range of age levels.

Still looking for a new group in Utica NY area.

If you read around the boards you'll come to realize that I rarely add anything of substance to discussions - I mostly just rabble rouse.

My group skews toward the low 30's, with one player just under 30 and one player very close to 40. We've been playing together for about 6 years now.

Oh wait. I just remembered that we have a 16 year old in the group.

Fatespinner/Peruhain - are you guys both Michigan expatriots as well? From where in the state? I grew up in a small town outside of GR.

As Ragnarok, am 33 and gamed/DM'd since age 14...in Edmonton too. Started with D&D and Middle Earth.

Our group consists of friends who've known each other from between 12 to 26 years, plus my wife. The DM changes regularly but I'm currently running AoW with our core group:
33,32,32,32,32,30,28,and 25 (wife) 7 male, 1 female

We have some sessional and semi-regular players as well:
33,32,32,32,31 5 male

The friendship of this group extends beyond gaming so there are others who pop in once a year to "relive the good ol' days". It's nice to have a reliable, solid group to get together with weekly...although gaming often suffers as we get sidetracked often chatting about other stuff :-\

Err... no. What made you think I might be from Michigan?

You're not far off, though. I played my first D&D game at age 11 while I was living in Muncie, Indiana. I lived there until I was 18 and graduated high school before moving out here to Arizona.

I was originally born in Florida, though. Lived there 'til I was 9.

Me: Age 31

I DM LG Bi-weekly in a local gaming group (I even get to play every now and then!). The age range there runs from 12 (my son) up to 58. Most players there are in their early 20's to mid 30's--with a few younger, a few older. It's a nice mix

I have to home games on hiatus right now-they start at 23 and roll up to 37.

My only observation is the play styles-older players in my area tend to be more RP intensive, younger ones more hack n' slash, for the most part. There are exceptions, of course.

I'm 38.

My game - 2 females, 2 males. Males are both in their early 20s, one female is early 20's. One female (my wife) is 36.

My friend's game - 5 males, all in their mid-20's, all Masters or PhD students at a technological university. And then there's me, the Liberal Arts major almost twice their age who spends much of his time wondering just what in the heck they're talking about...

Scarab Sages

We have one group that has been playing two games, with two DMs, depending on everyone's schedule.

The first game is a homebrew Iron Heroes campaign. The second is an AoW campaing we started to give the first DM a break.

We are (so far) and all male group of 4. I met two guys through last year's D&D Game Day, and one of them introduced us to three others, one of whom has stopped gaming awhile. I'm 34, and I think the rest of the guys in my group are right around my age.

I can't actually say all the ages of those I play with but I'll guess. The number in parentheses is the number of years playing

Me: 36(26)
Group: M38?(?), M36?(?), M36(26) M2F33?(?) M26?(1.5) F26?(1.5) M25?(1.5)

Sovereign Court

My hometown group still plays quite a lot, although I don't often get down there lately. Ages 30, 26, 27, 22, 29, 26 approx. One woman.

My local group: Ages 27, 25, 23, 19, and 21 I think. Two women. We're all military-affiliated. Of my local group, only I am a long-time player. I introduced my wife to the game a couple years ago, and a couple of my training classmates learned just a year and a half back. One player is brand new to the table, but has taken to the concepts very well.
I'm always happy to introduce this 'hobby' to new people. I've been a dyed-in-the-wool fan of D&D since learning to read about twenty years ago.

Once a month SCAP 6 players. Me DM(33), Male(35), Male(36), Male(24), Female(24), Female(22).

WLD9:Worlds Largest Dungeon, once a month.

Me-male(39)DM/GM
male(48)Half-Orc Barbarian/Monk
male(37)Dwarf Fighter/Cleric
male(36)Human Psion/Sorcerer
male(27)Half-Dark Elf Rogue/Assassin
female(25)Elf Fighter Druid/Ranger
female(25)Elf Mystic Theurge
female(24)Half-Elf Bard
(other half being a halfling) She thought it would be cute. Statistically speaking, she is.

There is more to the their respective classes and races, but i will withhold information for fear that the other players may read this.

The Exchange

I am involved in two games.

The first is played religiously every second Sunday 3.5DnD in which we are doing revamped Caves of Chaos, Temple of Elemental Evil and now we are in the Tower of Heavens. The players range in age from myself; 40 to 21. There are 6 players and I'm beginning to see why they are on the fourth attempt at the Temple.

The second game meets once a month or so and is made up of "tabletop wargamers" and myself. One of the others has Space 1899 (a Victorian melodrama set on Mars) and it's a refreshing change to use d6's for everything. All the four other players are in their 30's.

I´ll start to DM D&D3.5 again on monday.
I´m male, 36, my players are f26 (my girlfriend), m31(her brother) and m34(?). We plan on playing every two weeks.
I´m the storyteller of a sporadically played Hunter game (once or twice a year), same players, plus m41.

I play in (taking in deep breath):
1. My girlfriends Midgard (german RPG) game, with m41 from above, and his girlfriend (? mid30ish or something), planned biweekly alternating with my D&D.
2. The m34 above has another Midgard game running, once or twice per month with me, my girlfriend, her brother, the m41 from above, and a f(? about 30, I´d think). Tuesday nights usually.

3. My gf and the m41 co-DM a Midgard game on weekends 2-3 times a year, with me, m31, m34, f(? about 30),all from above, and (new in this listing) m (about 30). Play starts friday evening and usually ends sunday noon, with ample breaks.
4. An AD&D2 (Norwold - Mystara) group with completely other players. The DM is m37, players f36 (his sister), f35 (her workmate), m (about 40), me, and until recently m(38), but he had enough of our DM (the two are friends for 20 years) and quit gaming a while ago, because our DM sometimes has to have his own way and can get very antagonistic.

There are several other groups I play sporadically, but thats so few and far between that they they don´t merit mention here.

Oh, and did I mention that I do LARPs and Vampire LARPs as well?

Wow, I'm jealous of the amount of play time you get in and especially how you've organized it all to fit. Planning our sessions is a tactical nightmare. A texts B, B emails C, D, and E. E calls F. B remembers a prior commitment so the day changes. B calls G... etc. You'd think a bunch of adults could be more efficient. The day we settle on is different each week...or 2 weeks...

Well, it does not work out as planned all the time - life is just too chaotic. But rather small groups with set days and times help a lot - if you know you play on mondays, you can fit that in your schedule after a while if there is a general consensus in the first place.

And: planning the schedule via email is the only viable route IME.
Still, we had to cancel our Hunter game scheduled for mid-september, as two of four players had different commitments - the parents of one of them move that weekend, and one other player rather wants to visit his girlfriend (she is an US citizen living in Hungary and she visits the Oktoberfest in Munich, and he will meet her there - as it is only 600 km away rather than the usual 1000...)

I dm one group and play in another group:

The group I (32) dm:
- six players (one female);
- age 28 to 32, plus one player of age 39;
- two players brought a younger brother to the group;
- playing language is german;
- meeting once a month.

The group I play in meets less regularly but more often:
- five players (two female);
- age 19 to ca. 27, plus two players of age 32 and 40+.
- our dm is finnish, one player british, one player anglo-german, one player from the Philippines, and two players german.
- playing language is english.
- meeting about every two weeks (but less regularly) at our flgst.

Both groups play in the FR, both realms feel quite differently, though (I guess my interpretation is slightly more "low magic" than the original).

A side note to the previous posting: yes, organizing the meeting s can be nighmarish! Just once a month can be really hard to achieve when some of the players
a) have family and
b) a job that doesn't leave much space for gaming evenings.

Greetings,

My one and only gaming group consists of:

3 Lithuanians (a married couple and his teenage sister)
-- one post-doc in physics, one a grad student in environmental engineering, and one visiting for the summer

3 Americans (all Oregonians transplanted to Washington)
-- my husband, a grad student in physics
-- me, grad student in immunology
-- another physics grad student

Three girls, Three guys, average age probably ~ 28yo

Our DM is also a physics grad student, and he’s the only to have played before

I dm one group and play in another group:

The group I play in meets less regularly but more often:
- five players (two female);
- age 19 to ca. 27, plus two players of age 32 and 40+.
- our dm is finnish, one player british, one player anglo-german, one player from the Philippines, and two players german.
- playing language is english.
- meeting about every two weeks (but less regularly) at our flgst.

Greetings,
Günther

Wow! Now that´s one cosmopolitan gaming group. How did you meet? (Just curious)

On another note, my girlfriend and her brother are german-finnish, but thats all I can add in that regard. (He did his military service in finland, and, boy, do they have cold winters up there...)
Günther, you are from germany and stil living there, right ? May I ask where you are located exactly ? Again, just curious.

Stefan
