Daern's Instant Bathtub. I made it up one time when I was having a hard time thinking of cool stuff to spend money on. Really, who wants to go to bed without a bath after getting covered in gelatinous cube guts?
A cheaper (if less amusing) alternative is a Scarf of Prestidigitation (Command word effect). 1,350 gp, I think, if you make it for the neck slot, and only 1,800 if you make it slotless.
As for official items, I rather like the Portable Hole. If you've got ranks in ride, you could invest in an exotic mount. (Tangent: am I the only one who thinks that giving a Paladin's Mount the feats Wild Talent and Up the Walls would be awesome?)
Heroes of Battle has everlasting trail rations, which are cheaper than the Ring of Sustenance but don't cut down on your sleep time. It also has self-launching catapult stones (no catapult required!), which you could carry around in your portable hole... ;) In a similar vein, having the party wizard permanency a Shrink Item spell on a Ballista isn't a bad idea... though I've always thought mounting said Ballista on a Tenser's Floating Disk would be cooler.

Well, first off, we play 2ED so it may not convert. But here are some of my favorite:
A Bone Ring: Immunity to undead special attacks and energy/ ability drain
Bag of holding (a must have)
Collar of Tusmit (Also called a collar of Shantyr in our game.): Makes the wearer imune to a vorple cut. (Though the blow does inflict double damage)Vorple weapons are very common in our gaming world (Any weapon that is +5 or better is automatically vorple) , and so are the collars.
A wand of Vicious Globs
ANd of any non cleric: A ring of Regeneration.

Murlynd's spoon, because I like gruel.
Heward's handy haversack, because it is cooler than a bag of holding.
Universal solvent. Because a PC in my game drank it once.
For the fighter, its all about stat buffs or cool effects. A fighter who can blink is pretty awesome. Gauntlets of ogre power are always nice.
I think the best thing a fighter can get is a good set fo armor. Too many go for all out attack, but you need to be able to wade into a crowd.

Lilith |

Have to go with Heward's handy haversack or a bag of holding. Finally, enough room to carry all my gaming stuff and I won't have to dig for it - it'll be right there!
I'd also like my own personal unseen servant while I'm at it. Get some...thing to do the dishes, laundry, clean house - and make dinner as well!
As a DM, it's a deck of many things. MWAH-HAH-HAH!!! "It's just a deck of cards..."

Xellan |

Mine would have to be Heward's Haversack, Belt of Many Pouches, and the Casting Glove.
The Belt is just killer, with 64 pouches each able to carry 1lb of material, /and/ you can store your familiar without worrying about whether they can eat or breathe, no matter what it's size.
The Casting Glove is also a wonderful item, allowing one to store things just like a glove of storing, but if you store a wand, scroll, potion, staff, rod, etc... you can access the powers without having to call the item forth. Get two for twice the fun, and /really/ surprise your opponents!

Briefly on the topic of "exotic mount" I recently was able to purchase a warbeast bulette (named Scorn) for a character of mine. Got to tell you--it's love. The things' faster than a standard demihuman, has a pounce attack, tremorsense, can burrow, can digest anything (what Mount Doom, I can get ridda' that ring for ya'!) I even barded it.
As for magic items I've always loved the mask of the skull. I would love it only if it was an ivory mask that looked like a human skull, but the fact you can loose it from your face and it flies forth and snuffs your enemy's life like a freaking candle. I love it! The cloak of arachnida is another artifact that would be cool enough to wear even if it didn't do anything, but the ability to run on walls or ninja hide against cielings combined with the ability to cast webs and then walk through them like Sepharoth walks through fire is just...DANG!
I also really love the boots of jumping and springing. I love the idea of combatants vaulting clear above the heads of whole ranks of foes and coming down on top of them with twin swords scything. Likewise rings of featherfall are cool for those Morpheus style hangtime crane kicks for you monks out there.
Just a few off the top of my head. I love the magic items in D&D, no other game like it!

I have always liked to have OPTIONS. Items that can give me multiple ways to customize my character for each encounter are ones that I try and hang on to.
In that regard -- A weapon of spell storing is great but a ring or ioun stone of spell storing is better. A fighter that can add 5d4+5 points of force damage on a hit with their weapon is great. A fighter that suddenly creates 10 images is awesome. A fighter that has two weapon fighting that can cast shield will last considerably longer, etc.
I also really like the ioun stones (and wish that they would create more). I really like the idea of a bunch of stones buzzing around your head.

I think the title explanes it all, but basicaly what are your favorites? Im needing ideas for a new charactor and unable to think of anything fun to buy, My charactor is a Human Fighter, most likly going to with 2 weapon fighting so any ideas will be helpful.
IF you want something that really fits with a specific character concept I find its best to design it. In your case say "Kyr's Twinned Sabers" - appears as a single saber, but if the character possesses the requisite feats, it manifests the unique ability to split into two twin sabers each with the same properties as the original. The weapon responds to the will of the wielder so that each round he can decide whether he is wielding one weapon, two, or striking with one weapon weolded to handed. I think that would be cool for a two weapon specialist and make him unique. You need to price so that it is balanced - but that part of item selection as well.

My all time favorites, and in many ways even more effective under 3.x than they used to be, are figurines of wondrous power: golden lions.
Since, in 3.x, we now have rules for flanking and aid another, which actually make a DIFFERENCE, they're great. Esp. for rogues and the like.

Tome |

Thought Bottle, it is so worth the price if you use it whenever you get killed or make large numbers of magic items.
Belt of Many Pockets, for the comedic effect of stuffing my Gold Wyrmling familiar into it (she's the same size as me!).
Ring of Regeneration, because my DM likes to dismember people and we lack a real cleric. Just remember that it's probably best to have it made as something other than a ring if you expect to lose an arm, I recommend Amulet.
Any Wand, a few cross-class ranks in Use Magic Device and a decent Charisma bonus allows you to use any Wand with ease.
Boots of Skating, these things rock because a bonus to land speed is always welcome.
Helm of the Lion, a custom made item that allows continous use of Lion's Charge, very useful if you get lots of attacks as a full attack (like most two-weapon fighters do).
You could also probably use a Animated Shield, since two-weapon character typically lack defence.

I've always had a soft spot for Daern's Instant Fortress. I also like Portable Holes. Also, for some reason I always liked Iron Bands of Bilarro (do they even have those anymore?).
I like the Iron Bands, also. I always liked Figurines of Wondorous Power (especially the Malachite Frog), Wands of Polymorph, Staves of Vermin/Insects, and Robes of Eyes.
The item with the single most utility...probably a Portable Hole.

Fighter with two weapons huh?
How about a Returning Dagger in your off hand? Attack the guy next to you with your sword, and hit *point* THAT guy over there with the dagger.... then get it back at the beginning of your next turn and pick a new target.
I love this game. :-)

In line with this, if you have the stats, try having a selection of throwing weapons, saying throwing axes, all returning and distance, maybe also exit wounds. Then, you can make a full attack against almost anyone in the combat, while getting your Str bonus to damage, unlike a normal ranged combatant. Keep one of them on you for AoO and other things that might happen off your turn. THAT'S unique. Keep a selection of them made of various materials. Could a two-weapon fighter throw two weapons simultaneously for some special benefits, possibly with the creation of a new feat?
Downsides- it's very expensive and your maximum damage isn't as high. Though a spell storing throwing axe with a fireball in it would be awesome and take care of a lot of that. Take Use Magic Device, a skill boosting item for that to compensate for cross-class(will have to invent this one yourself, or perhaps a new feat that makes it a class skill), then get a wand of fireballs so you can refill the thing yourself. Or take a level of wizard and get the ability to use all wands without a check and cast useful spells like Identify and Shield, and of course True Strike, which you can then team up with someone with Brew Potion to make move-action +20s to attack that negate all concealment short of total (right?). There's also good ol' Ray of Enfeeblement. Lot's of benefits from that class even at 1st level.
Oh.... soooo many options... D&D too great... for... comprehension....
Oh, here's another great one. Make one of your weapons defending for the AC bonus, max the other out with powerful offensive enchantments, and get a dancing weapon as well, so you effectively have Three Weapon Fighting. If you have the funds, you can just keep this up and pretty soon become a ragewalker (MM 3) in all practicallity, a monster I've always loved.

I'm a sucker for Figurines of Wonderous Power--and I'm sure either a Stone/Obsidian Horse or a pair of Golden Lions would be excellent companions for your fighter. Don't underestimate how powerful these sort-of-overlooked items can be!
Daren's Instant Fortress...Cloak of Displacement/Cape of the Mountebank...Staff of the Magi....
*sigh* Pardon me...was I drooling? Or was that just the PC in me? ;)

In line with taking a level of wizard, then you can cast magic weapon on all those thrown weapons without having to permanently enchant each and every one. Create a spell along the lines of Mass Magic Weapon that enchants every weapon in your possession by +1 for a minute per caster level, then have scrolls/wands/potions/magical cupcakes of it made and use that.

Daren's Instant Fortress...Cloak of Displacement/Cape of the Mountebank...Staff of the Magi....
I had completely forgotten about Cloaks of Displacement! One item, and everything has a 50% miss chance against you.
God, magic items are so addicting... they really should put a warning on them.

Antithesis |

No way I could forget about Cloaks of Displacement! I play a Wizard when I'm not DM'ing....

The ring of Freedom of Movement is pretty handy; especially for mages who can't afford to get grappled.
For some reason the Sunglasses of Hipness +3 (?) from Castle Greyhawk (AD&D) have always stuck in my mind. I think they belonged to a dragon on a movie set... That adventure was gold for so many reasons ;-)

I have to admit, maybe it's just because I play more comp. rpgs than real rpgs, because of scheduling problems, but I love set items. But the Bonding Rituals in the DMG2 leave me wanting more. Look for a thread with with my ideas here soon. I'm still trying to work out a few kinks and I'll need some people to bounce ideas off of.
But for regular items, can't go wrong with an "Everdrip Blade". I just saw something recently in one of the last issues of Dragon or Dungeon, I can't find it now. But if memory serves, it was cheap and practical for a lower level character, in my opinion anyways.
