AoW as an OA?

Age of Worms Adventure Path

i was thinking of using the AoW campain as an Oriental adventure, comments? concerns?

I finally read the backdrop: Diamond Lake...I think the rigid societies of an OA campaign might be difficult to portray and keep the same flavor. Maybe make Diamond Lake a port town where there is a lot of foreign influence to explain some of the depravity and chaos? Perhaps an undercurrent threat could be that the local lord might cancel his agreement to let the town exist because the depravity is causing him great dishonor...

I love OA--they're just hard to run...good luck...I'd love to see you post your campaign log in the campaign log thread section if you decide to do this....

I'll second an interest in seeing some kind of campaign log or DMs diary if you decide to do this.

Personally I love all the populer (in the west) bits of Oriental Adventures but have never really been able to 'get it' in its natural setting. When everything seems to be about spirits I tend to get lost.

My solution is to bring the Orient to a more standard issue fantasy setting - that way I can have Gods I can fathom and a good vs. evil dichotomy and still get martial arts and Samurai.

I think the rigid society mentioned by f2k could even help playing out the start of the AP: A mining town where the lowest castes have to toil without any hope of bettering their lot. The local authorities would surely not listen to any lowly never-do-goods telling some stories about ancient cairns or evil cults, so the PCs are completely on their own. I imagine this as a thoroughly lawful evil society.
Allustan could well be a Wu Jen hermit living in an old cairn or cavern. Auric might be a sumo champion, and if Tirra has ties to either the spirit folk or the yakuza, better tread carefully. The Twilight Monastery is probably the easiest part to transfer. The bronzewood lodge is a bit trickier, as the western druids don´t fit into OA that well. Perhaps some shugenja as leaders, and ties to the spirit folk ?
Kyuss himself could have been an evil warlord with ties to the underworld, ideas might be taken from "Ronin Challenge" and "Test of the Samurai" (OA6 and OA7), which have a similar theme.

that´s it for now,

Stefan

You would probably also want to maybe consider instead of three evil 'gods' of the evil triad, have them be evil spirts trying to find a way to bridge a way to the material world so that spirits could take over the world (like some anime or something?) Just a thought. Makes a little more sense to me than 3 evil gods for a oriental society. and You'd have use lots on Oni. The background would require some tinkering too!

but hey sounds cool

yes i was thinking of using dimond lake as really just a town on the outskirts of it's region, a place for peasents and dishonerable types. the hardest part, i think, will to be converting some of the monsters over. but i think i can manage. and hopefully i can hold the group together long enuf to make it past 3rd level this time. if so, i will post a log

So, did you try it? How'd it go?

I have an OA group and am trying to decide between *Shackled City* and *Age of Worms*.

I'm playing in AoW right now, but it's infected me with a desire to run it once I'm finished playing in it. One of the ideas I've tinkered with (not very thoroughly, since I can't read the adventures themselves) is adapting the storyline to L5R. The BBEG could easily be an ancient blood-sorcerer returning from the Shadowlands. His minions would probably translate well into oni. Arena fights? Feh - the Emerald Tourney.

Diamond Lake would make an excellent Crab locale.
