Divine Inspiration?

According to the Dragon Writer's Guidelines, a new article called "Divine Inspiration" is replacing "A Novel Approach" and "Silicon Sorcery". It focuses more on explaining the material and dissecting it's themes than on new rules. It also says that it won't have direct rules interpretations of the material being covered - instead they'll be material that's similar but different to it.

I find this odd, for several reasons. First, as of issue #333, you're still running "A Novel Approach", so that seems to contradict the guidelines. Also, I don't like the idea of the article not having a direct rules-translation for part of the subject; that's really the entire appeal of those articles - that they're the "official" D&D stats for something.

I personally hope that "A Novel Approach" and "Silicon Sorcery" stay just as they are, and are with us for a long time to come.

Liberty's Edge

I won't be sad to see a change in the approach of both columns. Without knowing what the final form is, I can't really say much about this change.

To briefly characterize the articles, it seems they often would say something like -

"There is this game. And in this game is this thing. And here is the thing in D&D terms."

I didn't really like that. Basically, it would give you something for D&D, but no information about why you should use it in your game, or how to work it into the game. Nothing from those articles has ever provided anything I decided to import into my game.

I'll have to see the change to know if it is any better, but I certainly hope so.

I'm with you here (though I did like the chocobo stats and think I'll use them in a game at some point just to have a different kind of mount.) In regards to Silicon Sorcery I don't think I've played any of the games they've "converted" to d20 stats so, yea, the information always seemed a bit out of context unless someone was intimately familiar with the game the article was based on. I say fill the space with something new and see what transpires.

I have to agree... I don't even remember the last time I read a "Novel Approach" or "Silicon Sorcery" article... I suspect that not too many people found them useful. I'll wait and see what the new replacement is before I offer any comments on it, but frankly it'd be hard to imagine any replacement being less useful. :-)

(Other than the chocobos.)
