It's not so much "confirming" as "freezing" the avatar name to prevent further changes. You can change your name as often as you like when you first get started, but after you've made 10 posts, the name is frozen.
We did this because sometimes you don't like the name you picked, and you want to change it. No problem. But once you've made a bunch of posts, other visitors know you by your name, and so it shouldn't change.
(But even when your name isn't frozen, it's still yours, and no one else can use it.)
