Ever wanted cards you could fill out with monster stats to use while playing the world's most popular roleplaying game? Well, this pdf is probably exactly what you're looking for. Each stat card is form fillable and the different fields expand dynamically if you need more room. Just use the selection box to choose which optional fields to include for each card. As we all have found out, not all creatures are created equally and some have more abilities than others. These stat cards are exactly what every GM needs to have handy stat cards available at the gaming table.

Not bad for print and laminate

4/5

I printed out a bunch and laminated them. Works great with a wet erase marker for having a quick reference for monsters/abilities. It can get cramped on high level monsters, but you could additionally input data into the field via typing and print them out for a permanent reference.

Could have been somebody!

This PDF had a lot of promise. Unfortunately, it still has issues and the author hasn't posted on it since 2011, which I believe means it's a dead product, that won't actually get to the "Worth a buck finished!" stage. You will spend hours inputting data into fields, that when you return to work after saving, have disappeared. The data is still there, you just have to try and remember which fields you input data into and call them back to the card. It's frustrating. Sadly, I'm going to have to give this 1 star and NOT recommend anyone purchase it.

Ok this is a first for me developing anything for sale in the game industry. So if anyone has any comments or suggestions, I'd appreciate hearing them.

Thans in advance.

Well it sounds awesome enough for me to put it in my cart for my December purchases.

I really hope it meets your expectations. Please do me a favor and once you get it, look it over and post back here or write a review with any recomendations you might have to make it better.

I plan on updating it with any improvements or bug fixes that turn up. So helpful feedback is a must.

What size are the cards?

Each card is approximately 3.9 inches wide by 5.1 inches tall. This was done to maximize the amount of information to put on the card, since there are quite a few monsters with some impressively long stat blocks. I think it should accomadate most people's needs.

One thing I should note since I haven't gotten a color picture of a printed card yet, the selection box does not print out on the card, it's actually replaced by the Pathfinder Compatibility Logo instead.

Once I get a color version printed out and a picture taken I'll get that up on the site so people can see an example of the finished card.

Suggestion: if you adjust your card size to 3.75" x 5.5" (standard postcard size) then they can be stored and organized more easily using a variety of available containers.

I will see what I can do. Are you sure that those pockets in the poster card sleeves accomadate the full 3.75 x 5.5 or do you think it might be ok to shave a little off slightly to ensure a good fit?

Go ahead and shave a tiny bit off to ensure easy insertion and removal. I just grabbed a ruler and remeasured a GameMastery Item Card, and they seem to measure ~2.48" x ~3.45", and they slide in and out of a pocket page pretty well.*

* 2.5x3.5 collectible card size is too small for a full creature stat block with a readable font, for non-trivial creatures. Tried it, gave it up as a bad job.

Yes, I came across that problem as well. Although the first problem I encountered was that a generic card doesn't work very well because so many monsters are different. The dynamic properties I ended up using solved that much at least. As for size, I can probably make them a bit thinner to accomadate the 3.75 inch wide requirement but I'm not sure I can make them too much taller as I have to remain within the printable area for a standard printer.

I'll do some fiddling with it and see if I can't get an update by this weekend.

As long as they fit in the larger Index card boxes I'll be happy. Mine can probably ift in the standard size boxes, because I don't play PF/3E, or 4E for that matter, so my stat blocks for monsters are pretty small in comparison.

That's true. If you bring them in at 3.75" x 5" then you can still find sheet protectors for them. Alternatively, if you squeeze them down to 3x5 then they could go in index card boxes.

Since you don't play PF/3E, or 4E, do you have any suggestions or reequests for fields or functionality that would make these cards more useful to you?

My game of choice is Castles and Crusades, so the biggest thing I do not need is something for listing a lot of special powers/skills/feats to. So something that would work for editions of D&D prior to 3E would work better for me. It looks OK as it is though, but I won't know for sure until December when I actually buy it.

If you leave the layers available to be turned on and off that would likely allow me to make it perfect for the game I like, and still usable if I ever get talked into playing 3 or 4E again. Assuming you make certain sets of things specific to a given layer, so they can be altered to fit a variety of games better/easily.

Most of the form fields are hidden until you activate them through the selection box. I'm a bit too busy at the moment but I'll see if I can't finish the resizing plus some other tweaks and get it updated hopefully no later than the end of the weekend.

Well I worked on the PDF this weekend and got the updated version uploaded to Paizo, now I just have to wait for them to update the store to reflect the new changes. Made the new dimensions 3.74 inches wide by 5.25 inches tall. Also fixed a bug I fond as well as adding a couple forms to the selection box to be hidden unless selected. Hopefully the new update meets with approval from the majority.

The Exchange

I just noticed a problem today when I bought a copy of my own work and downloaded it. Somewhere in the process of uploading to Paizo and making the file available to people buying it, the file is getting changed and as a result when it gets to the end user it's just a flat image and the fillable forms are no longer active.

I've sent an email to Jeff Alverez to see if we can't figure out why it's doing this. Hopefully we'll get it figured out and fixed soon. But for now if you download it and the fillable forms aren't functioning then it hasn't been fixed yet. Once its fixed then it will be alot more useful than it currently apparently is.

Hope no one is upset by this, it's the first time I've uploaded pdfs to paizo, and in fact the first time I've ever sold anything period. So theres bound to be a few mistakes the first time through.

Edit: for the two other people who have already tried it. Are you experiencing this same difficulty. And if you are, I appoligize for the problem. The pdf really is very useful and once we get this fixed I'm sure you'll be much more pleased with it.

Just bought it and downloaded it, got this error. The personalization mechanism (which stamps the owner name etc into the PDF) is probably what is modifying the document. Do you need the rights restrictions set on the document?

The Exchange

This problem should be fixed sometime tomorrow I think. I'm working with Vic on getting them another file without any security enabled because it seems to be doubling up with theres. I hadn't realized there were some default security features enabled.

Sorry for any inconvenience that it's caused anyone. The product really does work quite well. Although I'm sure there is still room for improvement.

Hooray! It's now working like it's supposed to. Please try it out and let me know what you think. Suggestions for improvements are always welcome.

Will this also work with Foxit 3.1?

Sadly, I do not believe so. At least until Foxit comes out with an update to handle the dynamic stuff. At least my version of Foxit does not.

Thans in advance.

Very nice cards, and they print well, but a problem I found this morning, after spending a few hours last night inputting creature stat data for summon monster critters and printing them this morning is that if you save the PDF, when you load it up again it'll forget a lot of the fields.

Other than that, it's a very useful product.

Hmm, I was sure I'd finally gotten that problem solved. Does it forget some fields and not others, or is it across the board? Also, what version of reader are you using?

On the plus side the information should still be there, the fields just need to be selected again before printing.

I'm using Adobe Acrobat Pro 9. As you say, it doesn't forget the form contents, just which fields should be shown.

As far as I can tell, it keeps only the special abilities field, and that might be because it was the one selected in the list when I resaved the file.

(edit) Figured out that it wasn't a coding problem as much as it was me using the fields wrong. I was clicking each field in the list (and then outside the list) to "add" them, rather than going through and ctrl-clicking so that all of the fields I wanted to keep were selected. So if I use it like that, which is probably the intended way (unless you can somehow add checkboxes or similar to that) things should be working as intended. And it also has the added benefit that if I add a field by mistake, it can now be removed again without starting over from scratch by saving and reloading the file.

Yep, thats the way I intended the selection box to be used. Originally I had intended to make it so you wouldn't even have to save and reopen to get rid of an unwanted field, but I haven't managed to figure out the coding necesary to get that to work. I had also originally intended to have an optional field for inserting a picture on the backside but couldn't come up with an arrangement that satisfied me.

Over all, I'm pretty satisfied with how the stat cards turned out.

Sometime next year when I'm less busy I plan on doing some more projects like this. Perhaps a character folio and maybe spell lists and such, but I haven't really decided for sure. I will probably revisit the stat cards then as well if enough people ask for changes or for fields more useful to other game systems.

EDIT: Nevermind...problem solved.

Awesome product! Thanks!!

So question on this product.

Is there a way for me to quickly import a standard monster stat block and this will format it for me?

Or is this something that I have to type and click my way through and enter the stat block one entry at a time, one field at a time?

I'm trying to determine how much work I'm going to have to do to use this tool (yeah, I know I'm lazy, by that is why I buy these tools).

:)
Thanks

Hmmm, thanks to the renewed discssion I up and bought this. It should be handy with my Conjuror summoning left and right these days.

I just had a very frustrating two minutes so thought I'd post. One - thanks for this great product. Two - the selection box is the thing that begins "Aura, Defensive Abilities..." Ctrl+Click on stuff there to get the form working!

I have a small comment - the Name of the critter isn't auto-scaling properly. My Medium Augmented Fiendish Monstrous Centipede was too much for it to handle :-)

And.. a question. How do I deselect a heading? Say I don't want Aura after all?

Thanks again!

carborundum wrote:

I second this question...Still fiddling with them, but they seem to work well!!

Thank you!

Is there a way to de-select a heading? I have been getting odd headings that pop up out of nowhere on the cards.

Otherwise, these are so useful! Thank you for providing them to us!

The Exchange

Hmm, seems I should probably try and pay more attention to this thread. Sorry for the extremely late reply. You should be able to deselect sections in the same way that you select them, by ctrl clicking on them to unhighlight them and tab out. If I remember correctly this works just fine to get rid of unwanted selections.

As for the auto-scaling name, its possible that it's a bug in that particular spot or such a long name just isn't feasible for the space provided. There being a minimum pt size for the type used.

As to auto-populating the info. While that would be very cool and I'm also quite sure it's possible to do. Unfortunately it's beyond my current capabilities. I'm fairly certain that would require some sort of database populating algorithm of which I have no experience with. I'm definitely an amatuer when it comes to programming. What I have in this so far took me a couple weeks as it was with lots of help from the adobe forums and questions asked of the kind people there that were willing to help.

Admittedly I haven't been working on this or any other projects much in the last year. Life just gets in the way as I'm sure you all know. I do have a cute little son though to make up for it.

Thanks for the praise by the way. I'm really glad that you find my creation useful in your gaming.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Purchased it. Spent 3 hours inputting data. Went back to print it the next morning and all the fields were missing. Saw the fix on here, (clicking the fields again) but still, now I have to remember which fields have data? On one hand I really don't feel like this product was at the "sell" stage. On the other I can see needing a group of people finding the bugs to make it better. Overall I like the idea, but I don't like not having any functionality to remove fields. And I don't like having to bring fields back. I believe this PDF has promise, but could use some more work for sure.
