I have played this book, and I have DM'ed this book. Listen, it sucks hard. It blows like the wind over the plain. The people that wrote it did not know what in the world they were doing. Several of the creatures have double the standard hit points, which should double the CR, but NOOOOOOO Mr. Jim Pinto and his crew only added 2 to the CR. Not only are the creatures messed up, but it features impossible traps. This is a complete waste of nearly 100 bones.

Um...if you actually read the DMG you'd realize that adding 2 to the CR is supposed to be double the difficulty. (i.e. 1 CR 10 creature makes EL 10, but 2 CR 10 creatures make EL 12 - see Table 3-1 pg. 49 DMG 3.5) Besides which, the traps aren't impossible - it says in the into that a Rogue is a very good thing to have around for the dungeon...if you want to compare a Rogue with maximum ranks in Search and Disable Device of an appropriate level for the area and you'll see they are beatable if not easy.

This is not to say that the dungeon isn't unbalanced or poorly researched but your critic of it isn't even marginally well thought out. Maybe you should try reading the rules before lambasting someone else for their application of them.

I may not have the greatest grasp of the rules, but in the official rules it says that if you double the HD then it doubles the CR, not just add 2 to it and move along. EL has nothing to do with my gripe, it is the fact that they are unbalanced. Especially when you compare them to the treasure that the players receive, that is why I quit DMing it my players hated it and I didn't have enough time to come up with things on my own.

What I meant about the traps is while it is possible that a character with enough skill ranks can get by, they aren't located in the places that the players don't think to look.

While this book is an excellent concept, it bites the big one on execution.

Sigh... CR and EL are a pretty complex beast.

If a creature has 20% more HD (e.g. 6 instead of 5) you increase the amount of xp you would get for defeating that creature by the same amount. A creature with double the amount of of HD would get double the normal xp. Mind you, this doesn't change the CR.

If you the number of monsters in an encounter the EL goes up by two. However, EL is used to guage the difficulty of an encounter. You cauculate xp based on CR.

Two CR5 creatures is an EL 7 encounter. So is one CR7 creature. As a happy coincidence, you generally get the same amount of xp for both encounters.

I am Currently playing this adventure. My group has just finished the first map and it's been pretty intense. We just lost two of our troup to a fireball trap. the Rogue and a nosey fighter . . .they both failed saves and that was that. but other than that it's been excellent. We have an awesome DM though, I think that makes all the difference. If anyone cares I'll try to keep posting on here at different time durring the Epic Campaign...
