Pathfinder One-Shot #1: Sundered Waves

For years, the pirate Captain Renlock sailed the coast of the Arcadian Ocean from the Shackles to the south to the waters of Varisia to the north searching for plunder and adventure—until one day his luck ran out. The ship was captured by a navy and the captain and his crew were apprehended and imprisoned. Years later, after the captain's death in prison, the four released crewmembers receive a message from the deceased captain pointing them to treasure he hid for them.

This short Pathfinder 2nd edition adventure written by Jason Bulmahn is intended to be completed in a single session and includes four 5th-level pregenerated characters whose backstories and motivations tie closely into the plot of the adventure. This adventure can be easily incorporated into various virtual tabletops, run off of digital devices, or printed out and played at a table.

"Sundered Waves" is sanctioned for use in Pathfinder Society Organized Play. The rules for running this Adventure and Chronicle sheet are available as a free download (942 kb PDF).

Pregenerated characters for this adventure are also available as a free download, as well as a free digital wallpaper of the cover art in a variety of sizes.

Great adventure for newer players

5/5

Just ran this adventure for my table of players this last weekend. We all loved it. I have one experienced PF2e player, an experienced D&D player, and a newer (less than 25 sessions) PF2e player. Our 4th player was out of town so we ran this one-shot instead, and I ran a GMPC.

Nice tight story, good challenges and puzzles, and interesting characters. We did the full adventure (including the optional first fight) in almost exactly 4 hours on Foundry. My players laughed at the “friends-along-the-way” ending, but in a good-natured way. We all left the game feeling like we had a blast.

Definitely recommend for newer players to showcase the system, or for experienced players looking for a break from a long campaign. 5/5 stars.

Yes. (I mean we could remove the "can be assigned to any faction" but the material facts are correct)

Is this called "one-shot" because it was live stream game a first, just made available for general public to run as well? :O

Edit: oh hey a blog about it

Wow, this is a *really* good idea. Bought!

Nice. Any plans for Starfinder Oneshots? The pregen characters make this a wonderfull product for demo's. Otherwise the society storys can be used as oneshots.

As we said in the blog, PaizoCon will see the release of a Pathfinder and a Starfinder One-Shot.

And within ~12 hours of release, there is now support for Sundered Waves on Foundry VTT via PDF2Foundry. Import that adventure, assign the jpgs contained within the Art Asset folder and *boom* = ready to rock in Foundry VTT.

Note: Requires Legal Paizo PDF registered to an e-mail address to import the adventure with PDF2Foundry.

Actually was available on Foundry within 4 hours. Specifically the blog only mentioned Fantasy Grounds as having it available on release day and the foundry dev who adds he support took that as a challenge :)

I love the pregenerated characters. If nothing else, I can shows these as a model for my players on how to design a character that fits in with the adventure. I’d like to see more of these for the Adventure Paths.

Honestly though I don't see point of having pregenerated characters for APs because Iconic pregens already exists and almost nobody wants to play APs with pregens :'D So if there was unique set of pregens for every ap, that would feel kind of a waste if you ask me. And in worse case you would end up in the Slithering situation

(though I would like to have more iconic pregens at higher levels(or even pregens who aren't necessary iconics but exists so you can fill party in pinch at higher levels), but that is another matter)

Pregens in an AP's Player's Guide, that follow the advice given therein but are not compulsory to use in the AP, might make everybody happy :-)

Anyone else having trouble downloading this file? I've tried several times but I'm consistently getting a download failed error...?

I really appreciated the Art Assets folder in the download, but I couldn't help noticing that not a single one of the monsters had artwork, either in the adventure itself or in the Assets inclusion. If the Art Assets thing becomes a regular feature of Paizo PDFs (which would be a very good thing, to be clear), would it be feasible to pull at least Bestiary art for monsters that aren't bespoke for the adventure and include them as well? I understand that trying to fit them all into the text might not be a good idea, but token creation would be a lot easier if I didn't have to pull art out of my Bestiary PDFs first.

While I'm here, I might as well note that I also found the lack of a grid on the unmarked map to be less than ideal. It wound up not being a huge problem for this mod because the dungeon itself isn't exactly built on straight lines, but I could see it being a real issue for a VTT in future when dealing with a map that has straight walls in it.

Thanks for the feedback. One-Shots assume you already own some products like the Core Rulebook and Advanced Player's Guide. If one bought the pawns as a digital set, one would have the images they need for the One-Shot and more. Would you be willing to pay a higher price for the monster art if it were in the One-Shot? If so, how much? How would it effect your desire to purchase the pawns too?

Reading through it, getting ready to run, this seems like a nice little one shot. Just one thing... the sorcerer pregen seems to be missing any indication of which spells are signature.

As I primarily VTT user/gm, I would really appreciate receiving art pieces as separate files. Would make stuff so much easier. For creatures it's ok, because Archive of Nethys has monster art, but handouts, items etc. would also be a great addition, even if it meant I would have to pay some more.

No, you didn't miss anything. There are a few bugs in the Pre-Gens creation by rules:

Lavanna Saltspray
Missing Domain - Recommend Water because it fits the theme.

Jadren Tagar
Missing a Language
Dagger should be +10 to hit with Ranged not a +9
Intimidation should be +10 not +11
Will save should be +11 not +9
Should not have Low-light Vision

Kaako Ashfeather
Acrobatics is listed as 2, should be a 12
Missing Senses Low-Light Vision

Elsir Syniras
Signature Spells for Levels 1, 2, & 3 were not mentioned on pregen
4 Formulas from the feat Magical Crafting not listed
Missing a Trained Skill
Society should be a 9 not a 11

Thanks Steven L/Dragnmoon for info.

Well, I already own the pawns, so it's hard for me to answer that exactly. However, for a One Shot, we're talking like two to four images? I can't see how that would replace the pawns for anyone. It's just a QOL improvement, not something that would greatly impact how my purchasing would play out. As for whether I would pay more... probably? Not a lot, though, but maybe 50 cents or a dollar?

So, I have a question in regards to the maps.
I am very happy to see that GM only assets...

such as:

Room numbers, traps, and secret doors

... are not on the "untagged" map, but the grid is also not on the untagged map. That is going to make it really hard to use.

Can we get the dimensions of the map, so that we can properly import that map into the VTT of our choice?

Also, this will make it very hard to use when using Google slides as your PBP maps... as I will have the choice to leave the secrets on the map, or not play with a grid. Also, on that, if we can avoid have partial squares on the outsides of the digital assets maps, that would be great, because then they could simply be like flip-mats... 24x30, or whatever. Those are really easy to import into Roll20.

This I see as a fatal flaw in the maps. Other than that, I really appreciate the separated out artwork!

About the un-tagged map; I too had some concerns. But, when I uploaded it into Roll20, dropped it on the VTT, and stretched it out, things lined up pretty well.
[spoiler] Set your map size to 37W x 50H and you will have 1 row of border all around the map to play with the stretching. {/spoiler]

I did appreciate that the maps are at the end, instead of being a page inserted into a break in the box text. HINT ;-)

One other thing for the errata for the Character PDF which I didn't see mentioned:

Kaako (Rogue) only has 3 cantrips listed: Electric Arc, Guidance, and Know Direction.

She gets Electric Arc from Storms Lash and Guidance from Pendant of the Occult. She should get 2 more from Minor Magic: Know Direction and ???

If you want to run it on Foundry, why buy it on Fantasy Grounds?

The FG-purchase should sync to Paizo, maybe try unlinking and linking accounts again?

Because I have groups that use one but not the other so buying it for Fantasy Grounds is usually the most practical way as I get the FG module and the PDF to import into Foundry

Yes. (I mean we could remove the "can be assigned to any faction" but the material facts are correct)

Is there a reason why this is granting 0 Reputation? Adventure Path and Module chronicle sheets grant the normal amount of Reputation for Society credit (12 Reputation per chronicle). Shouldn't the One-Shot grant 4 Reputation along with the 4 XP?

I might be wrong, but when playing through the adventure last evening one player was noting that Elsir had less spells per day than a sorcerer of his level should (I think he was missing 1 each of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level).

Great to see you all embracing the one shot idea and with proper production value! It's a great way to get new players into the game.

Now you just need digital battlemaps in Unreal 4 and some Iron Maiden music.

Too quick for groan or sigh,
Each turned his face with a ghastly pang,
And cursed me with his eye.

Module adventures are all campaign mode, so the answer to this is yes. But I would not recommend it. The story is better with 4 people, and if you have more than one GM in your lodge, you might find that more GMs will sign up to do this one for the double ACP, allowing for more tables of fewer players.

That said, I have 5 boys from a Boy Scout troop who ALWAYS play together. I'm not sending one of them away that day. So my plan is to provide extra pregens of the Iconic Swashbuckler Jirelle and Oracle Korakai. They can pick which one of those two can come in a fifth party member. The advantage of those two in my head is that they can easily fit into a pirate adventure, and be explained as cousins for Elsir and Kaako, respectively.

Just keep in mind that this scenario is balanced for 4. There are no scaling adjustments or challenge points, so you would have to either accept a slightly easier game, or come up with your own adjustments for the larger party.

adjustments:
Adding another minion to some of the fights would probably do it. The Giant Skeleton could have a lesser skeleton buddy, for example. Other combatants could have more hit points or a slightly higher to-hit.
Go with your gut on the best ways to keep this lively.

Is there an ETA for when we can get an untagged map with grid? I am really hoping that I can get an untagged version of the map with gridlines for running this with google slides. My game is on Sunday.

This isn't too hard to get done using layers in Photoshop or similar. (I use pixlr myself). just load up the ungrided map. Then layer the marked up one on top. Cut out the big red Ss so the map below shows through. It should all line up perfectly.

Of course then you have the problem of making it fit to the grid with in roll20 or such. Plus, not sure you noticed, but the grid on the ship doesn't match up with the rest of the map. All the squares are at an angle. It's honestly much easier to take the unmarked up map and just let the Roll20 grid show through.
