(5 stars)LotsOfLorehttps://paizo.com/products/btq02asv?Pathfinder-Adventure-Path-175-Broken-Tusk-Moon2023-03-21T23:24:48Z
Pathfinder Adventure Path #175: Broken Tusk Moon (Quest for the Frozen Flame 1 of 3)

I am running this for my friends, we are almost at the end of book 1, but I have already read ahead: it's a very cool and interesting adventure. The setting is it's biggest selling point, given that it's rare for an adventure to be so strongly themed. I'm all for tight and strongly themed adventures, instead of long meandering ones which inevitably end up full of "filler episodes". In this case, because it's as lean as a tundra hunter, you get all the good and almost no fillers!

One aspect that I didn't love was the excessive one-dimensionality of most NPCs. I am guessing this is because the these products are supposedly for young teenagers. So, if you are playing with adults, you will want to do what I did and flesh out the NPCs in order to not make it extremely obvious who the bad and good guys are, and make it all a lot more nuanced.

Pathfinder Adventure Path #175: Broken Tusk Moon (Quest for the Frozen Flame 1 of 3)

I am running this for my friends, we are almost at the end of book 1, but I have already read ahead: it's a very cool and interesting adventure. The hexploration is a great introduction for new players. It's very simple and my advice for players is not to waste too much time searching every hex. My advice for GMs is to maybe throw in a traveling merchant close to the end of the book. That or replace some items that have only a gold value for weapons, potions, scrolls, magic items of equal value the players might need/want.

Pathfinder Adventure Path #175: Broken Tusk Moon (Quest for the Frozen Flame 1 of 3)

As a player of book 1, I loved it.
Good:

- An under-appreciated unique part of the Inner Sea gets its time in the spotlight

- A satisfying finale towards the end. Chapters 2 and 3 are really good.

- The art style is fantastic. I really like the surreal painting-like quality to the Burning Mammoth opponents. Makes an otherwise mundane enemy kind of surreal and otherworldly in appearance.

- A hex map with a pursuing enemy provides a sense of pressure to keep the party moving and a sense of scale and time. (Note however this is NOT a "hexploration" AP — the route is pretty linear and funnels you)

Bad:

- Chapter 1 has no real failure conditions other than death. You can blunder through all of it and the NPC's are expected to just pat you on the back and say "That's okay, we all make mistakes". With no consequences, it's completely skippable. Consider rewriting it to the tastes of your group.

- The Broken Tusk are a bit of a noble savage cliche. I appreciate that they needed to be the most cosmopolitan of the tribes to accomodate players who don't want to buy into the tribes, but still seem like they're the "made for TV ratings" tribe.

- There is no spelled out place/person to trade for items with. I get that this is supposed to be an AP about a nomadic society, but this is still Pathfinder 2e and equipment is still a part of character growth. The AP would have benefitted from a merchant sailing up the river or something from Varisia/Belkzen/Irrisen in part 3 to trade with the tribe. As it stands currently your group will be sitting on 60-80g (not loot, GOLD) with nothing to spend it on by the end of the AP.

- Pakano, other than being a bit of a jerk, doesn't give you much motivation to hate him by the end of Chapter 1. I moved his foreseeable but inevitable betrayal to the end of Chapter 2 instead to give it a bit more weight.

Pathfinder Adventure Path #175: Broken Tusk Moon (Quest for the Frozen Flame 1 of 3)

Paizo's website ate my review with the Backtrack bug so I'm just going to spit out bullet points here, might edit them later:

The encounters in the book are plentiful, varied and most of them can be solved in interesting ways (other than combat). Some of them are heartwarming. Most of the maps have interesting tactical terrain features. The pursuit creates a lot of tension and the story is more complex than expected.

This is the great, classic fantasy AP that I've been waiting for since the release of 2e. And the first book ends in a very climatic battle that is not just about killing the opponent.

The only downside here are the lackluster map designs and the butchered hexploration rules. While the maps are great with regards to tactics, they look amateurish and ugly. The hexploration rules will require me to make my players unlearn them, once we hit Kingmaker (if that one ever releases). The hexploration map is quite empty plus there isn't really a lot of time to explore. Not sure how much of a negative this is though, since it's mainly used for the pursuit.

TL;DR: buy this!

Pathfinder Adventure Path #175: Broken Tusk Moon (Quest for the Frozen Flame 1 of 3)

As great as I hoped it would be.
