Mechanically a good splat, brought down by bad art and questionable omissions

3/5

The new class, gear, and class feature options are all fantastic. I have no issue with any of those. But both backstory and art have taken a nose dive and if this is the direction the IP is heading I'm not sure if it's worth supporting.

This book could have really used some FOCUS, but it was like everyone and their mother wanted to throw in the minor God of niche causes, resulting in a watered down product.

- Shelyn is mentioned on one page and only to mention that she had a relationship with Desna and Sarenrae and never again. How incredibly insulting to her legacy that she's basically a cheesecake footnote to titillate readers. (I'm aware she's involved in some scenario in SF Society play but since I DON'T play Society I'm not sure why I should care.)

- Art is terrible in some places. Abadar and Weydan look like a generic NPC you'd create as a player character from a bunch of defaults. Pharasma looks like a crazy catlady in a hoverchair and is missing her color scheme. Iomedae looks like she needs a haircut and her color scheme is also wack. Sarenrae needs to eat a hamburger. Why is Urgathoa wearing half a space suit complete with helmet?

- Nothing about the planes, but we got 8 pages on a bunch of magical schools and factions that nobody will ever use aside from the Wardens and the Order of the Gate, and a bunch of deities you will never even remember.

They're not referring to touch ACs as far as I can see. They're likely referring to how it Dex was the key stat for Precog during the playtest.

There is nothing wrong with the magic in starfinder.
It's just not the only way to play and be effective like in every other fantasy rpg ever.
It's for the most part... balanced. Magic doesn't break the game both for and against players. It does however, have a learning curve on how to use spells for maximum effect.
The hardest part of magic in starfinder, is the extremely limited amount of spells a character can have which balances out the fact all of them are spontaneous casters.

I really agree with this comment. In most rpgs casters over power everything. In starfinder there is a nice balance so even my soldier can feel strong. Personally I used to play casters all of the time when I was a power gamer. Now love my support or no magical roles. Starfinder lets me play those builds without some saying “you could do that easier and better with a spell caster”.

Without that balance starfinder would fall for the trap as pathfinder 1, 3.5, and 5e dnd.
In fact my pride and joy is an almost ridiculous envoy healer.
Scaling cantrips! The spell sergeant archetype just got a lot better.

It already is. Late November is when the first shipments for subscribers and pre-orders will be going out. The street date is also listed under product availability.

Huh, okay. I only ever saw the date in the pre-ordery section since that's also where the pdf date shows up just before release good to know.

Sidenote, I've realized I psychologically prefer early month to late month.

I think I witness time kind as if "end of month" took longer than early month :p Though it also helps that lately book content had been early month while scenario content was late month meaning there was something to wait for both at start and at end of month

Had a feeling this was going to be a 2022 book, what with the current issues with supply, internal upheaval, and the compounding factor of holiday stressors on already stressed systems. Hopefully 2022 eases up on... well, everyone.

I'm happy that we're finally getting more on the gods of starfinder.

I totally agree. I kind of want two more categories of information.

More Information on how some of the other Golarian gods transitioned to the new setting.

Shelyn showed up at Songbird station (yay!) but sometimes we can be at a loss as to whether there are still worshippers of a Pathfinder god in the Starfinder setting if that god did not make the big 20 list.

More information on some of the Starfinder Big 20 that were newly created for Starfinder.

Straight out the gate, Triune got lots of love, with the Drift being their personal gift to the Universe. We got entire AP backmatter articles on the faiths of Hylax and Sarenae, and everyone knows that Abadar is great for shopping.

But... Where is the love for Oras and Ibra? I know that I wrote up Oracles of Oras and Constellation Drives in part because I wanted there to be some cool content associated with both of these important gods.

I'd also like to see more on Talavet and Weydan. I have characters who worship both of these gods, but really what I know about them came from the Core Rule Book.

Hmm

I hope this book will have a section about background information like Tech Revolution had and talk about how/if magic is used on a industrial scale, how common spellcaster are in Starfinder and how spellcasting is learned.

I'm kinda wildly in love with Starfinder and was going to pick this up anyway, but as long as you're taking questions, I'm really curious about what's in that The Magical Galaxy chapter.

Ooo! I must know. Also is there a god of Skittermanders?

What support is there in this book for existing classes besides what is revealed in the description above?

How do the new faith-based options for petitioning higher powers work?

Also, can you tell us more about the new magical organizations and spellcasting schools? Are they just setting flavor (nothing wrong with that) or are there some game rules to go with them?

The fact that it wasn't mentioned in Near Space makes me think no, but - we know from one of the PaizoCon or GenCon Streams that there's a write-up of Saints of the Veskarium, which, awesome :D I will eat my hat Skittermander dice bag if there isn't some kind of Skittermander Patron Saint of Unrequested Help in there somewhere! Like, a great Vesk battle hero ascends to Sainthood in the eyes of Damoritosh, and its faithful Skittermander squire / equerry / whatever just like....follows along to continue being helpful? Like, the Samwise Gamgee of the Veskarium! /swoon

Damoritosh The Conqueror: RISE, PHLOGOSTOHN THE ASCENDER. YOUR CONQUEST OF THE STAIR-PEOPLE OF BALUSTRADON-9 IS WORTHY IN MY SIGHT. CONQUER FOREVER MORE AS ONE OF THE ALL-LIVING SAINTS OF THE VESKARIUM!
Phlogostohn the Ascender: As you command, Grim Commander! I shall take my place by your side in Veskhalla!
A harried skittermander runs along carrying Phlogostohn's mighty doshko
Abortenereesh the Helpful: Ooooh you're in the big leagues now, Phlog! Yer gonna fight forever, you will - and I'll carry your hitty stick!
Phlogostohn the Ascender: ....uh no, that's fine faithful squire! You, uh, stay here. Listen, go carry someone else's batteries or something? I'm going to Veskhalla alone.
Abortenereesh the Helpful: Of course you are, and I'm coming with you!

It's fun to see the synergy going on between Pathfinder and Starfinder, both going through waves of tech or magic-themed books, Starfinder benefitting from Strength of Thousands' focus on magic schools, and Dark Archive later exploring magical phenomena and anomalies Starfinder gets to dive into with this book.

In terms of deities -- I think it boils down to Rovagug and Torag are gone (probably with Lost Golarion) and every other deity from Pathfinder is still around. Other deities may have gained or lost followers, and a few new ones may have appeared, although most such new deities were for the most part primarily worshiped outside of Golarion in the Pathfinder era.

Of course, with that article about the Elven Diaspora, I am curious to know whether somebody slipped up and gave incorrect information or the Gap was much shorter than we were previously led to believe.

Hard to say. We have some sources that point to it lasting millennia, others that point to it lasting a few centuries.

Nethys appears to be gone as well.

I have a scenario addressing that in my head canon I really want to write up for Infinite, but I have a feeling it would never get approved. Assuming this book doesn't make it immediately obsolete...

I have a vague memory of some material alluding to some temporal shenanigans with the Gap making its exact length impossible to pin down and it might have been different lengths for different civilizations. But, I don't remember the specific source. That could just be board speculation my brain misfiled as canon.

Well, I should say, Dex for paradoxes, Int for spells.

"Your Dexterity is your key ability score, and it determines the number of time-altering paradoxes you can use each day, as well as the saving throw DC of many precog abilities. Your Intelligence determines your spellcasting ability, the saving throw DC of your spells, and the number of bonus spells you can cast per day."

I mean, if Golarion gods are still kicking around, I'm presuming other deities are too.

I wanna see more of how the Eldest are lurking around.

Ragadahn has so much ocean access, and at least one planet I vaguely remember is said to worship him. Wanna see how that works stripped of that Land of the Linnorm Kings influence.

Also, The Lantern King. Has he taken tech gremlins into his fiery folds in order to cause Space Mischief?

Can I start canonically calling Shyka a Lord of Time yet? *writes note to self* Priest theme Precog of Shyka is good idea.

I must know about my precious Eldest (more Outer Gods lore would also be fun, I'm loving a lot of the tidbits of things between them and Black Butterfly and Desna).

that's neat but it sucks that you have to focus on one being good or the other being good. My group was enjoying the idea of a Dex caster.

Were paradoxes per day changed? My group found it felt a little low to only have like three of them of them for a good chunk of your levels.

I hope the book can at least come out by the end of January, my group is waiting to start a new campaign and I really want to play the finished Precog.

I hope the precog ends up getting buffed abit to compensate with having a weaker casting stat then what I had during the playtest.

The playtest version was more than a little nuts. Strongest stat in the game to casting DCs, full BAB, and a bucket of rerolls/prerolls every day. The ones I played with were better ranged soldiers than the ranged soldiers and still had full spellcasting. Having a limited spell list really didn't matter because the best spells were on there, including ones that made no sense (explosive blast? Do the samsungs warranties expire randomly and you know when?)

Oh with full bab it can definitely be too strong, I don't think it having full bab was appropriate without something to tone it down. But even then, that was a high level issue since that only happened at level 14 and onward iirc. From my experience without the full bab it was fine. The DCs weren't really an issue because of how the class intentionally didn't have DC boosters as automatic as other casters had.

I am unsure what to think of the spells to a degree, since I think we were told that there were going to be more appropriate spells in the book final just using the existing spells like they do with their other class playtests.

Milo v3 wrote:

eh? Besides boosting your casting stat and taking a feat that's available to everyone what DC boosters would those be?

For some reason I was thinking technomancer wasn't the only caster to get Spell Focus for free. My mistake.
