While not being my favorite theme it turned out surprisingly fun.

Great book! Love the new classes!

Product-Guns and Gears

System- Pathfinder 2nd Ed

Producer- Paizo

Price- $14.99 here https://paizo.com/products/btq029xk?Pathfinder-Guns-Gears

TL; DR- Solid new Pathfinder toys and toy based characters! 95%

Basics- BRING THE BOOM! Guns and Gears brings solid steampunk and introductory industrialization to the Pathfinder setting with new technology and themes, two new classes, a new race, and countless new character options and items.

Mechanics or Crunch- Paizo knows their system the best and they bring the best new materials for their toys. The new classes are fun parts of an ever expanding world. The Inventor is the steampunk inventor you may be searching for, with no magical background or ties like the alchemist. The Gunslinger brings pure boom to any encounter. The new race the Automaton is an interesting, but well supported addition to the world of Golarion. There is just a TON of materials with all kinds of new toys such as new guns, tools, and magic items that can help turn the tide of battle. My only complaints are that the Gunslinger feels a bit under-powered. It is an absolute crit machine, but guns can fall flat if a character spends a day hitting but not critting. That said, what Paizo has here is a FANTASTIC addition to the crunch of Pathfinder. 4.75/5

Theme or Fluff- Guns and Gears is not a small book and there is just an absolute TON of new stuff here. Now in a tool book you would think its just item lists, and there is that, but there is also a bunch of fluff to bring the new stuff into the old game. Pathfinder 1st ed is about 10 years ago in the world of Golarion, so this helps advance the world as the fantasy world gets a bit more pre-industrial. All that said, one thing sticks out and this may just be a me-problem: automatons. I always hate new races in old parts of the world as if we just magically found them in the same places we were. That and they feel out of place and honestly more like a warforged in PF2. Not a game breaker, but something I don’t think I would have wanted in my game. Another nitpick is there are no new spells here, and I feel that's a reasonable, but somewhat annoying choice. If you want some gun spells, look elsewhere. The writers wanted to focus more on mechanics and less on magic, so while I might want some spells, it's ok they are not here. 4.5/5

Execution- It’s Paizo- they know solid book production. Good layout, art, font, hyperlinking, and all the pieces I expect from a AAA RPG company. It's a 50 buck book, but as an evil millennial, I mostly like PDFs, so the 14 bucks for a digital file is extremely worth it. 5/5

Summary-I honestly love Pathfinder 2nd Ed. It's all the pieces of 4th, 3rd, and 5th Edition DnD I want. And differentiating itself from DnD by moving to a more steampunk and pre-industrial culture will help it grow by further making its own path. Guns and Gears is a solid step in that direction with amazing classes, items, and class options. The missteps I see are maybe more opinion; even if they are not my favorite things, they are done well. If you want less magic and more mechanics mayhem in your Pathfinder 2nd Ed, you need this book now! 95%

Many elements underwhelming but what is good is exceptional.

4/5

Very disappointed with the absence of support for much of my pf1 gunslinger weapons; this has created extremely problematic continuity issues in two of my campaigns—both currently put on hiatus due to player disappointment.

Should be noted, *none* of the disappointment is toward the loss of touch ac; this actually made my players relieved so they don't have to choose to "be less optimal" to not trivialize encounters and I don't have to over compensate for it in encounter strength.

Guns and Gears definitely makes me think of more steam and clockwork machines, though I'm curious if this book will still cover some numenera stuff even though its not "futuristic technology" book :O

...Wait, does automaton ancestry mean we get to play Jistkan automatons? :O Or are Automaton category of intelligent constructs getting a new name?

For reference to everyone who hasn't read awesome construct handbook I'm talking about these. You can actually see one in the image used for blog

Ok. Paizo... How could you know I personally NEEDED that book like I need blood in my veins!?
Seriously?
Is there a liquid version that I can inject directly into me?
*dies*
Seriously.
O_O
I love you all, you awesome people.
Can't wait to see the actual cover!
A steampunk book... Niiiice.

Note: this will clearly be the first book that everything in it will be minimum uncommon. It's even more heavily themed than Secrets of Magic, and if it indicates what is coming in the future, I CANNOT WAIT.

ANd yes, that's the perfect book to play in Alkenstar and the Mana Waste!
Oooh! my PFS character is already from there. Hope there's a couple of stuff with access that need that nationality!!

That may not be the case. The playtest Gunslinger doesn't need to touch a firearm. May not have access to all of the feats, but I'm excited to try it out with a crossbow.

All I have to say, is that I'm desperately hoping the automaton ancestry is more "Pathfinder warforged" than a redo of PF1's androids.

The "redo" of PF1's androids is already confirmed to be in Lost Omens Ancestry Guide coming out next month. So, these automatons are absolutely different. Furthermore, Michael Sayre already mentioned a few posts above that the Automaton ancestry in this book can be used to play Jistkan Automatons, which are quite different from the Androffan Androids to seem to be referencing.

Androids are coming out in Lost Omens Ancestry Guide. Automatons will be very different, more like magitek constructs who can modify their bodies by doing things like slotting a sword into their elbow instead of their forearm and hand.

One thing I really hope for (and that hope is warranted by the inventor iconic) is support for mechanical arms!

To be fair I'd imagine a dev can't actually say that, because if they said "Oh yeah, this ancestry is totally like this other copyrighted race from a well-established IP" the scary wizard from down the coast might object.

Hey Warforged are completely different from automatons!

"Although the bodies of automatons are wonders in and of themselves, the true technological marvels they bear are the automaton cores that power these constructs. The secret to the creation of automaton cores has since been lost to time, but each core contains a spark of consciousness from a particular individual, combined with a significant portion of planar energy. These two components are merged using powerful magical energy to form a core of seemingly limitless arcane potential that powers an automaton. This energy courses throughout an automaton’s body, powering the construct and completing an internal connection that allows the individual automaton’s consciousness to remain active. "

They are result of group of jistkans discovering magical mind upload :p

Also (champion), they (sharpshooter) are (stalker) cool (master) as heck! And warforged don't have cool cyclops eyebeams ;P

Automatons? Now I didn't expect that one...

Sounds good, I do love the look of the automata. I presume there will be a deluxe version of this? Can't see one up yet.

Playing as a Jistkan Automaton? That'll surely cool... BUT PLAYING AS AN AUTOMATON INVENTOR WILL BE AWESOME!

I'm guessing the book has replacement limbs.. because that inventory has an automaton left arm.

The core book and general dev/designers commentary hint that these should mainly be up to the player. They are, basically, just "fluff". Instead of an arm, you can have a prosthetic one if you want. It change nothing much mechanically.

I really love that sidebar, on page 486.
Page where the sidebar is reproduced on AoN

IMHO, I prefer this than to ask a player to pay gold to just be on par with other characters.

They also prefer to let GMs manage that for their groups because these things are delicate, and many people have very diverging opinions on how it should be implemented, and instead of pleasing 1/4 of people and hurt the rest, they know that the GMs are the best at getting the best solution for their groups.

I am hoping this book provides guidance on how to better use wheelchairs and prosthetics in our adventure stories. I believe that had been mentioned to "maybe" be in an upcoming product?

Maybe. Or it could be arm implants like from Starfinder.. or other products featuring similar themes. Such as doing it to start becoming more automaton... or.. you know.. even like golem arms... Either way, I like it.

Yes. Yes. I can see why you wanted to keep this under wraps for three weeks. I saw loads of speculation on what the new classes would be, and what that might mean for the book. I saw plenty of gunslinger guesses, but nobody started guessing "inventor" until we got a couple more crumbs. Also, I didn't see anybody guess that there would be a tech book. I am as excited for this as I am for Secrets of Magic, and to have an Automaton ancestry as well... *chef's kiss*

Pathfinder Rulebook, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Yeah when I think automaton arm I think more along the lines of what starfinder has, a prosthetic limb with a weapon inside that can pop out. I just like always having a weapon available that can't really be taken, that's easy to hide, etc.

Horsefeathers. I was guessing there would be an inventor class way back in September. They've been dropping hints since last July.

I repeated my guess on the first page of this specific playtest.

I also was hoping for a tech book last June, and became increasingly certain we would see one as more Lost Omens stuff came out. Though I did assume the focus would be on items overall, not just tech, so I'll take only partial credit there.

Now, the gunsligner I did not guess. I mentioned it, but that wasn't my real guess, as I assumed it would either be part of the Inventor class or renamed to something else, which I'm still hoping (however faintly) that might happen.

I'll also throw out that I was off on my guess for when we'd see this book by a month. I'm very pleasantly surprised to be wrong in this case.

Fun fact: The picture used as a placeholder for the cover come from the very first book released in the Lost Omen line... The Lost Omen World Guide... :O
(Page 75 if I remember correctly)
(Also, the constructs we see in it are clockwork automatons, coming as monsters in Bestiary 3, and as an ancestry in this book!)

So far, one of my favorite things to have crafted was a water boiler/chiller out of Hot and Cold Siccatite, Fire-Forged and Frost-Forged Steel, and a magical steel plate enchanted with create water to keep the system properly filled.

Can accomplish similar results with elementals and other fun stuff but I'm hoping there will be a ton of special materials and rules for crafting all manner of fun devices!

I think you might be mixing it up with Luis Loza's podcast in Arcadia - just went through the PDF and I don't see any mention of trains or rail, unless I super missed it.
