I think that the species-generation rules that are in Interstellar Species should have been added in AA4 instead.

5/5

Amazing gear for players along with the usual baddies

5/5

Absolutely amazing. The options for players alone make this worth buying. Ever want to duct tape another species body parts onto yours? You can do that. Want to curl up in a ball and charge people? Got the gear for that. Need to squeeze your ginormous dragon into teeny tiny rooms designed by space rats? We got something for you. Try to take experimental nanites that might help you in combat, or might turn you psychedelic color.. Oh drat I already tried those. Pink is NOT my color...

Okay wanted to write long review but...

5/5

...Well I don't have energy to write super detailed review and I felt like I was procrastinating writing this, so decided to get my thoughts out faster :3

I'm not sure I'm good at analyzing content themes of each alien archive so far, but I definitely love how this book 1) adds even more alien fauna to pact world planets 2) introduces new creatures related to races or creatures in previous alien archives(shimreen and animated quartz swarms) or ap articles(eohi based agathion) 3) has lot of weird playable races(I'm really impressed by writers' creativity) 4) finally brought back brain collectors and stormghosts :D (not the only old alien creatures that were brought back, but my favorite ones certainly) 5) introduces new companion animals 6) introduces new memorable villain groups/organizations.

Planashar Dominion and Lacunal monastic order are great for that purposes :D Starfinder does have lot of politically hostile to each other nations, but not yet any iconic villains. So more the merrier when it comes to villain groups ;D

But yeah long story short: I think this is genuinely my favorite alien archive book so far and that is saying something since I had almost month to think on this and I liked previous ones as well.

If I had anything to request for next book... Well I'd still love to see Tier 20 starship monster and the CR 21-24 example monsters ;D

Aaand now to the critical side. What you thought that just because I'm cutting this review shorter and giving it 5/5 that I wasn't going to point out stuff I noticed that I think need addressing for next book? Perish the thought!

So anyway, there are few times I think something slipped through edit pass to the book. The examples that I remember(since I didn't take notes because I assumed I would do the review within week of the reading the book originally x'D) are:

1) Vasporan and "Environment any sky (Old Ustavia)". "Old Ustavi" is never mentioned in Vasporan's ecology article nor can I find any info with googling, so seems like it got cut but left in the article

2) Skarak and "Skaraks are organic creatures that seem to have reached several different systems before the Gap—ostensibly traveling with the help of their strange teleportation sense."

This is only time it is mentioned so I'm confused of "wait, what strange teleportation sense?" Skaraks can teleport creatures tethered to them closer to themselves, but they can't teleport themselves and are never mentioned to have some sort of "teleportation sense" otherwise. So it feels like either some mechanic got cut or lore got cut, but the mention of it was accidentally left in.

3) corona beetle got renamed to dawn beetle ;P Okay this isn't a nitpick, I just wanted to point that out xD

4) grioths are lanky, but art for them is Goladryth who was unique unusually large and muscle heavy grioth from Dragon's Demand :D Okay this isn't nitpick either fully, just that I find it funny that despite text still calling them lean, their art has incredibly bulging muscles

5) Bit confused about how shipkiller bulb interacts with starships since its not starship monster and starships aren't really written to interact with regular monsters?

6) Starmetal eater doesn't have adamantine eater :'D It has graft for six other starmetal types, but not adamantine

And to end on positive note again, some of my favorite entries(non race entries ;3 I'm explicitly not listing them here despite liking them all. I'm also avoiding listing creatures I already mentioned liking earlier) in this archive :3 Starting here:

Carrion Wheel, Cloud Ray, Aluci/alorbidaemon, Deadfall Stalker, starship sized elementals, Endlings, Epokasite, klikharp, mordagast, murzzilat, quyo, Sapient Purple Orb, The Seen, Shipkiller Bulb(hey I didn't mention liking it earlier ;D), Skaraks(ditto), Wyspiria, Supenga and Warpstitcher ;D

P.S. Grafts and new class template grafts are cool too.

Any new Copaxi lore? ;D Or terrifying lore implications in new creatures?

I'm about to run the new adventure path and am looking forward to AA4 given it is referenced already in "We're no Heroes" for the Khulan.

Pathfinder 2E has really spoiled me (as has Starfinder). I'm running D&D 5E on Saturdays at the moment but having just finished a 1-20 campaign in Pathfinder 2E I am eager to get back to it already. Meanwhile I've got Starfinder going and a bi-weekly PF2E side gig, but once you have seen the PF2E action point and +/-10 crit/fumble system in play it cannot be unseen and makes everything else look a little less interesting as a result. Even in Starfinder we catch ourselves wishing it was closer to PF2E's design.

Only a week left.

And i'm out.

I havn't even read Alien Archive 3 fully, nor did we play anything beyond the introductory adventure, "Dead Suns" & the first Skittermander adventure.

I did buy SF APs #1-#24 though and will continue to buy them until #33.

I have so many questions about this post and what it's doing here.

Ask away.

Basically i said that i don't need a Alien Archive 4, as 3 volumes (and the Alien Archives sections in the AP volumes) are more than enough for me.

We played Starfinder and liked it, we also played Pathfinder second Edition and didn't like it and we played Pathfinder 1e and still love it.
Unfortunately due to covid-19 it's impossible to meet in person for the next months and i do not need a 4th Alien Archive in my life.

Stay safe and stay home, everybody.

You need Fantasy Grounds in your life.

We were able to play in person again until the end of october and have played online three times in november.

I really don´t like playing online for multiple reasons (we are seven players and had to switch to online while finishing book five of a six book Pathfinder campaign).

Everybody in our group agrees that playing online is a very poor substitute for meeting in person, but it is better than not playing at all for the time being.

I have thousands of minis and really like my WarLock Tiles terrain and i would probably stop playing rpgs for a while if the current lockdown is extended (which looks to be the case until march 1st).

I will finish "Curse of the Crimson Throne", even if the last few sessions will be online only, but after that i have no interest in ever playing pen & paper online again in my life. ;-)

Nothing particularly new with the Copaxi other than art. There are some pretty unpleasant and creepy monsters in this one though!

And pretty ones too!

What new constructs are in this book (pretty please)? :3

Ugh, that last day of waiting when you get caught on the tail end of shipments. I'm feeling very guilty about how much time I've spent refreshing my orders page today. Not that I've learned my lesson or anything, haha!

We have two Infiltration robots (think The Terminator) and Gray Goo (nanite swarm basically) for tech, Many-Miened One (spirits of deceased children bound into moon rocks by their parents for vengeance against those that killed them) for magic, and Planashar (2D constructs that want to unite 2D and 3D space), they're a blend of magic and tech.

What are the new playable races (name, type, subtypes, size)?

Ohhhhhh, yeah.

It's CR 19 so it can in fact pull off the whole vengeance thing.

Neat.

I note that at twelve(two of which having appeared previously in Society scenarios) I believe this is the shortest list of playable races in an Alien Archive yet, which I'm sure will please some.

I will also note a personal, very mild disappointment that we didn't get playable stats for any returning PF monsters to go with the group, those are always welcome.

Still from this discription these seem interesting I'm especially intrigued with the entu, hadrogaan, & tryziarka.

Also, fun fact, the jububan are the only SF race who's name starts with a J so far. With that inclusion all we need is a race that starts with an X & one that starts with a Z to have the full alphabet.

I'm so tired of downloads from Paizo not working. I have to click the download link like 500 times to get it to finally work. So far I've been trying for three days to download AA4 unsuccessfully in both Chrome and Edge, and the few times something DID download it was a 0 byte file.

So no new anacites, or that (disembodied) artificial intelligence template I'd been hoping for then? Daaarn. Guess I'll have to content myself with all the mad genius in the rest of this book. Planashars in particular sound really fun. Tech Rev, maybe! Maybe.

Thanks, Rysky!

Np :3

And the Planashar are connected to Anacites, in a manner of speaking.

Side note: Starfinder Society previously introduced rules for 2 of the new PC races, but a third, the Entu, was introduced (sans stats) in Starfinder Society as well.

(Noting because, like copaxi & kiirinta, as well as certain PC species from alien AAs as well, their introductions to galactic society are plot points in either Year 1 or Year 2 of the ongoing story there. As a GM running Y1&2 as a home game, I'm withholding those races from my players as "spoilers" until they encounter them in play.)

I found a huge mistake in the book when I was looking through it last night.

On page 59 there are 2 weapon dice mistakes with the level 9 and 14 versions of the Sclerite Harpooners heavy weapon.

The level 4 version does 2d6 P damage but the level 9 jumps to 25d8 P damage and the level 14 does 46d12 P damage.

Blergh can't resist x'D I'm dumb

Ah well i've managed to save lot of money with humble bundles and such so I guess its not biggest deal :'D But yeah I should make new year promise to be more patient with waiting sales next year? :P

...Wait is that the corona beetle? Huh they got renamed into dawn beetles

Dark Archive

I'm amused that Grioth picture is clearly based on certain muscular named grioth from dragon's demand where they were introduced in pathfinder x'D Mostly because that grioth's muscular large nature is presented as unusual since grioths are otherwise lean and thin

But yeah, this book has surprisingly large amount of horror material :O And I don't see big theme across player species besides quite lot of them being lovely weird :3

I also appreciate the effort to set up new villains such as the Lacunal order and Planashar Dominion :O

Dark Archive

...What is "Old Ustavia" mentioned in vasporan's environment entry? It isn't mentioned in lore or in google, so I get feeling that its lore got cut from entry but editor missed mention of it? :'D

I have no one but myself to blame for this but I had gotten it in my head that since this was originally meant to coincide with Devastation Ark that this would be a high CR heavy book. I'd say that isn't so much the case. Highest Cr creature is 19 & CRs 16 & up only have one creature each.

This isn't necessarily a criticism, I had just set myself up with a certain expectation on a logical leap. Lot of interesting creatures in the book, to be certain.

Second Seekers (Jadnura)

I had a question, Kiirinta in SFS have ground speed 20, kiirinta in AA4 have ground speed 30, will there be clarification of which should be used going forward? I'd obviously like to have speed 30 for my small moth mechanic, but I want to make sure.

Dark Archive

? What is Skarak's teleportation sense? This is something mentioned in lore once but not in stats so I'm bit confused .-.

But yeah overall I'm gonna give this book 5/5 review since monsters in it are awesome, but I'm seeing few things that seems to have slipped editors xD

Book has a lot of neat monsters and races. Though I will say I'm confused by a giant praying mantis with magical powers being listed as an animal rather than aberration, magical beast, or vermin.

I could use a second/expert opinion on an aspect of species grafts; first I read it one way, and now another.

First up, the species grafts don't stack with the benefits of racial traits of the same name. Simple enough. But how to read this: "You can’t replace racial traits granted by species grafts with alternate racial traits, as those must be chosen at 1st level."

On a first skim, I took this in as "You can't use species grafts to obtain racial traits you swapped out for alternates." But on a real read I think I was totally wrong, and it's saying, very specifically, that you can't use species grafts to obtain alternate racial traits.

But what if you made that choice at 1st level and took an alternate racial trait? Could you then install a species graft to acquire the racial trait you traded away?

I dunno, I've put myself in muddle on this one.

Yes. You just can't take a graft and then trade that racial trait that only exists in the graft.

Pathfinder Starfinder Society Subscriber

What I'm asking, though, is -- for example -- if an android PC chooses to swap out their upgrade slot for a nanite upgrade at character creation, can they then install an upgrade slot species graft.

I'm not opposed to that as a rule, but it does open up edge cases like a lashunta who is both psychically resistant and has lashunta magic & limited telepathy (which is flavored as an internal conflict).

Again. Yes.

Ah, grafts are for NPCs, not PCs.

Unless there's some new rules in AA4 that I haven't seen yet.

frequency modulation graft (augmentation) is listed in the rules options index, but is missing from the publication entirely. I can assume this was a mistake in editing. I'd love to see a final description and stat block for this augmentation if the team could possibly include it in a blog post in the future.
