Always living in the shadows is hard when you're a clever and regal creature like a kobold. Now it's time to make a name for yourself and bring honor and prestige to your clan.

In Little Trouble in Big Absalom, you take on the role of one of five kobolds from the Hookclaw clan tasked with exploring a treasure-laden vault discovered by a team of Hookclaw diggers. Enticed by the potential wealth, the kobolds brave terrible dangers in what turns out to be a grandmother's basement before being asked by the kind old lady to retrieve her magical hedge trimmer from a neighbor's garden.

Little Trouble in Big Absalom includes two mini adventures that can be played back to back or alone—filling as much or as little time as you have for madcap adventure. In addition, the five pregenerated kobold characters provide a preview of the upcoming Pathfinder Advanced Player's Guide in this exciting offering for Free RPG Day! Grab some dice and some friends and play the role of determined kobolds!

Great Oneshot!

5/5

I have run this oneshot twice as an introduction and both times were great!

Madcap Kobold Chaos for the win!

4/5

This was a great ~3 hour one-shot (we just played the basement level). The pregens are hilariously zany, and the premise and setup are fabulous. It's worth investing a few extra minutes in the prologue, hamming up Tunnelmaster Miknik and the cheering/anxious Hookclaw clan, to set the tone.

The encounters were fun to play, had a good variety of challenges/abilities, and were surprisingly tough for a light-hearted one-shot. But IMHO at least one of the basement encounters needed some kind of social element, rather than "you enter the next area, X creature attacks [two of whom can't even speak]". In hindsight I'd have given Camilla some sort of charm/suggestion spell and lead with that before things turn to violence - that could make for some great (but also poignant) fun.

As it is, the adventure really needs the players to embrace the spirit of the adventure and their chaotic/crazy characters. If they do that, you'll have one of the most fun 3-4 hours of your recent roleplaying lives. If not, it's still a good fun one-shot, with a fun twist on the classic 5 room dungeon. 4.5 stars.

Note that there is a very high quality, free fan-made VTT map available too.

Great Intro Oneshot to 2e!

4/5

My regular group had a member down for two weeks so we switched to this freerpgday adventure to fill the gap and had a blast! The group had limited experience with second edition but after playing this oneshot they want more. We completed the adventure in two 2.5 hour sessions.

Eleanor Ferron's adventure gets going quick with a cool twist on a standard dungeon crawl, bringing the danger into the domestic with the kobold party exploring an Absalom cellar. I encouraged the players to ham up their kobold wonder with the 'treasures' in the room, playing the Hookclaws as insular and new to this world of Absalom suburban basements worked well for our group. I shared the (handily spoiler-free) adventure background with them ahead of our first session which helped set the tone, and advised them it would be more of a saturday morning cartoons vibe than grimdark meatgrinder.

Highlights included Camilla's creepy tea party set up, Madame Trunchsnuffle raging out on the characters, and reading them the background on the fungus leshy which they greatly enjoyed. I'd say the second half is a bit weaker than the first and I was concerned the group wouldn't blindly follow Granny's request to retrieve her garden tool but a homebrewed incentive of a rival kobold tribe (the Sewer Dragons mentioned in the background) already set off to win the prized hedge trimmer helped seal the deal.

A final shout out to the pregens, who are all brilliantly flavourful and who have excellent artwork to boot. Some of my players ended up making their own kobolds but it was great to have those on hand for players who didn't have time for character creation.

If you're after an intro to pathfinder2e I think this is the best option available at the minute, hitting the sweetspot for intro length between Torment & Legacy and Fall of Plaguestone.

The last sentence in the above post seems to be partially incorrect. The XP isn't retroactive, but the paragraph does state that it now awards credit as a scenario. Thus 4XP. So if a group wanted to play it now, that's what it would be.

Alex has clarified that future Free RPG Day offerings will be 4xp, but this one will remain at 1xp here

It looks like the sanctioning document has now been updated.

The Chronicle Sheet gives 1 Experience Point(s), 4 Reputation with one faction, and 10 Treasure Bundles appropriate to a character of their level. It also grants 8 days of Downtime.
