A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for level 5 pregenerated characters.

Over recent decades, numerous incidents at the Pathfinder Society's Grand Lodge in Absalom have damaged the priceless collections, destroying many documents outright. The Society has sent the PCs to Nexus House in the arcane metropolis of Quantium, hoping that the second oldest Pathfinder lodge might contain duplicates of the lost texts to copy and study. Yet the PCs are not the only ones interested in the secrets preserved in Nexus House, and the PCs find themselves on the trail of unlikely criminals.

This adventure makes use of the 5th-level pregenerated characters available as a free download.

Challenging Intro to PFS2

3/5

I liked the back story to this one and the way it sets up an interesting plot for the season. The full-page art was good and fun to show to my players. I also thought the use of existing flip-maps was well-done.

The two reasons I’m not rating more highly are length and difficulty.

Based on the numbering (1-00) and name (“Origin…”), this seemed like a good adventure to use as a kick-off to the new season and rule set. However, with the amount of activity (skill check sections, encounters) plus time for handling player questions on the new rule set, we went over our allotted time even without reaching the final encounter. Keeping this in a tight 4-5 hours with new players may be tough.

This also has an encounter that can be brutal to your players if they don’t learn some key info about their opponent or bring the right mix of pregens. Our gang enjoyed the story/new rules but were crushed by this encounter, ending the scenario prematurely.

Brutal for Players, Brutal for GMs.

1/5

I ran this just last night and I had some major issues with it.

GM specific difficulties:

There was a mechanic requiring you to keep track of time with, as far as I could tell, no actual consequence for time taken. There was a long research section which was written in such a way that it was impossible to bridge the skill checks and the information being conveyed with any sort of role-playing forcing that section of the scenario to be very gamey where it certainly didn't have to be. The way Sebnet was written waa really quirky but the answers to the questions assumed a sort of video game call and response that was dependent on the questions being asked in the order and manner the scenario presents them.

The final fight calls for the summoning of a large number of oozes but the mechanics for this are somewhat unclear as the text in the encounter area and the mechanics in the 5 and 6 player adjustment sidebar are contradictory. All in all I ended up spending my prep time doing things that the scenario should have done for me which took away from my learning the rules of the game or having other things such as the exact mechanics for the yellow mold hazard.

As for the rest, the scenario itself seems like it was setting up the pregens for failure. Ron Lundeen has produced some other fair but challenging scenarios but they have always at least been fair. But the conditions presented here where the PCs are pregens and have limited ability to prepare based on changing information and much of the difficulty presented is rather difficult for the chosen pregens to handle.

Ultimately, the players struggled mightily with the hazards and fights presented the party only narrowly avoided wiping. Overall for a scenario intended to be your introduction to a new game this did a lousy job and I wouldn't blame a player whose first introduction to Pathfinder or Pathfinder Society was this scenario if they chose to never come back

But maybe this scenario set up interesting plot hooks and was in itself compelling? In a word, no. The enemies are presented as bumbling idiots (which makes their brutally efficient tactics a bitter pill to swallow) and the plot set up by the Pact of the Open Road doesn't strike me as immediately 'hooky' and to the extent it does it is difficult to envision where the PCs would factor into it.

Overall, skip this one if you can.

Fun introduction to the new edition!

5/5

I played this adventure at GenCon and really enjoyed it! Seeing the pregens for the new edition at 5th level was great, and the adventure had a good mix of encounter types that let us try out different abilities.

Use the 5th level iconic pregens.

At GenCon, our party was Fumbus (Alc), Amiri (Bbn), Kyra (Clr), Valeros (Ftr), Merisiel (Rog), and Ezren (Wiz), since those were the only six pregens on the table.

I'm scheduled to run this at ReaperCon over Labor Day weekend.
I don't see the scenario prescribing which pregens to use.
Should I offer only these six to my players, or should I let them choose from all of the pregens?

Unless there is an update before then, those are still the only six pregens available at level 5.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I've downloaded the pack of iconics and now I see. That's easy.

So for those of us that don't have access to all the secret links to all the PFS2 documentation... can I have a link to the pregens?

Is Paizo going to do anything about those of us who had complementary PFS subscriptions last month but paid for this product by mistake since they never gave us any clear indication that it would be part of the subscription? Certainly nobody got this module as part of the last drop even though we can now start a PFS subscription with it.

I honestly have no idea, but I've brought your question to the attention of those who can get an answer.

I got mine fixed via Customer Service. Your best bet is probably to ask them for that refund.

I am a bit confused by the chronicle at the end of this scenario. The chronicle says that you can award it to "any character of levels 1-5 who does not already have a copy of this Chronicle sheet."
However, the scenario is not tagged as repeatable. Reporting for the events seems to be marking all 2e scenarios as repeatable, so that's not a good source to get an answer. Does anyone know if it's possible for players to receive credit for this scenario more than once?

It is not inherently repeatable, but that doesn't mean that there won't be ways to get a replay for it, and since the Chronicle doesn't apply to the character who earns it (since it's a pregen scenario) we want to be clear about the limitations on applying the Chronicle.

Should this be part of a Pathfinder subscription? I have a subscription but not this scenario.

Yes, it is part of the subscription. It was added late in a slightly irregular manner. If you should have gotten it and didn't or if you paid for it when you should have gotten it for free, you should contact Customer Service to get the issue fixed.

I've been playing pathfinder since 2012, this is the worst map I've ever had to draw.
