Disaster Looms Over Vigil

The heroes race to the crusaders in Vigil to warn them of the Whispering Tyrant's devastating new weapon. Amid a city-wide celebration, Vigil's leaders are disinclined to believe incredible tales from the frontier, so the heroes must uncover the conspirators who seek to engineer the city’s destruction. At the center of these schemes is a gang of thieves whose long-ago heist has finally brought old enemies to light. Will the heroes assemble the clues in time to warn others of the doom that hangs over Vigil?

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path continues the Tyrant's Grasp Adventure Path and includes:

  • "Last Watch," a Pathfinder RPG adventure for 8th-level characters, by Larry Wilhelm.
  • An examination of the life-hating threats that dwell in the void of the Negative Energy Plane, by Patchen Mortimer.
  • The secrets of the Seal-Breakers, a sect that strives to set the Whispering Tyrant free and break other seals that preserve reality, by Greg A. Vaughan.
  • A collection of relics—magic items that grow in power the more they are used in pursuit of a cause—from the glorious days of the Shining Crusade, by Alexander Augunas.
  • A bestiary of fearsome monsters, including a bestial humanoid tainted by undeath, an ersatz angel, swarms of noxious dragons, a flying beast from the Negative Energy plane, a reclusive plant-shepherd, and hordes of undead, by Mike Headley, Isabelle Lee, Meagan Maricle, Kendra Lee Speedling, and Larry Wilhelm.

I'm actually rating this for articles...

*****

Sooo thing with me is that I try to avoid rating adventures or modules until I have played or run them(or both), but in this case I felt real need to rate this just because I love articles in it.

Adventure itself seems fine and has great art(one thing I love about this ap is quality and details of maps), but I haven't played or run it so I don't know how it feels in practice. I do agree with one poster from forum threads about how certain LN character's motivations would make more sense if their family was priding themselves on how Tyrant is sealed for good rather than "We should have destroyed tyrant when we had chance!" since you'd think they would take PC's message as "Hah, I told you so" rather than "You are trying to steal my spotlight!"

So why I love the articles? First article details adventuring in the "Void"(which seems to be what in universe characters call negative energy plane :D I always thought negative energy plane was kind of mouthful) threats there and such. Thats cool because even with planar adventures I had no real idea on how characters might even go about on trying that. And article makes the Void seem as horrifying as it should be.

Second article turns Seal-Breaker archetype into its own organization seperate from Whispering Way and it does so in real cool manner :D I'm looking forward to seeing more from the organization in 2e

Third article(well the middle one iirc) is more relics, this time Shining Crusade themed. Bit pity it seems they don't appear in adventure themselves, but I love relics and it good to have more of them.

And finally, bestiary monsters are great :D I mean Clacking Skull Swarm? Who wouldn't love that! I want to see all of these in 2e as well

I wonder if this will feature an updated gazetteer of Vigil, capital of Lastwall, considering we had one in "Cities of Golarion"?

I can't wait! ^_^

I can't wait to see more!!! Also like Part One too..

No new gazetteer of Vigil here, although the city gets a glorious map. The discussion of Vigil in "Cities of Golarion" is helpful, but not necessary, when running this adventure.

What about showing Part One of this AP, Ron?

Working on it.

Thank you Adam!

What're the subjects presented in the articles of this volume? I'm hoping for something really cool.

All three articles are, in fact, really cool. We're not quite ready to reveal them yet, but we've got the right tools to break them out of the void in good time.

Thank you Ron!

Interesting cover but why is Lini on it and attacking the party? (Yes I know it's probably not supposed to be her but lets be honest it looks a heck of a lot like her)

Loys of cool things in this one! Swarm of noxious dragons?!

Very cool things in this one, not the least is the bestiary combined with relics that I'd like to use in Carrion Crown. Also Seal Breakers are cool.

Really looking forward to seeing what Patchen wrote for this!

I finally got to write some for Planar Adventures (after begging for years) and I'm hyper keen to see this expand on things. :)

I wonder who that is on the cover. It looks like he's some kind of antipaladin, but he has the symbol of Iomedae.

It looks similar to the symbol of Iomedae, but the blade is Broken (Just below the Sunburst) Perhaps... an IMPOSTER?!?!

My guess would be a fallen paladin of Iomedae. Now a follower if The Whispering Way.

That would be my guess as well, Kevin. But I guess we'll have to see come April what the deal is.

Just one thing that is bothering me with this particular scenario...

Why would the paladins of Vigil, the paladins supposed to keep watch on the Virlych, would not believe that the Tyrant has woken again ?

Spoilers on Vigil and Carrion Crown:
It was already kinda stupid in Carrion Crown. I mean, Vigil is located there because the paladins are supposed to make sure the Tyrant has not escaped from his prison. How could they not know ? And how could they not believe that the Tyrant is back, when their job is to be ready to fight when the Tyrant comes back ?

It was already a pain to find a good reason for them and the Ustalav's government to not help the players in Carrion Crown, even after bringing them proofs...

I know the paladins grew cocky after the Tyrant's defeat some years ago, but I would have hoped they would have learned from Arazni's kidnapping and would have stopped being so full of themselves.

I don't need a clear answer to this question, but what I wish is that the authors thought about a good reason for this. I hope those paladins are not being dumb just for the plot.

I'm highly interested in the Seal-Breakers. Specially, I would like to see if they have any interest in the god biding seal that imprisons the Rough Beast.

An article about the Negative Energy Plane is also really interesting, even more if it's focused in its denizens.

What I've gleaned from various panels, that the paladins in Vigil are infiltrated by the Whispering Way. So they maybe trying to sow discord.

"Success breeds complacency."

Then, theLegend's notion of hidden agents works with that quote. The Templars of the Ivory Labyrinth used that ploy fairly well.

Yes, it's clear. (They are not ignoring a clear and present danger of the Whispering Tyrant.)

Also, they basically have an orc horde at their other northern Border that keeps them pretty well occupied (to the annoyance of some NPCs according to Book 1's background sections).

I am kind of curious now if that is actually Lini on the front cover transformed into some sort of Mortic thing?

wondering if the Seal Breakers has anything to do with the Brotherhood of the Seal in Kaer Maga

Not specifically, sealbreaker is group(also an antipaladin archetype) who want to break Tyrant's seals, but Brotherhood of the Seal's seal didn't get broken by them specifically :p

Anybody got the pdf yet?
If so, how is the adventure?
I especially want to know how Lastwall gets destroyed and how many survive that.
Thank you. :-)

Well all I can say is someone gone goofed on the cover art.

The green gnome is goof?

Yeah lets just say the gnome that looks like Lini on the cover looks nothing like that in the actual book.

So does the negative energy and seal breakers articles have cool tidbits? And what is ersatz angel anyway?(ersatz means imitation, so is it angel that imitates thing or a fake angel?)

I think calling one "ersatz" to her face would be a very poor decision. ^_^

I have only skimmed the seal breakers article, but it already seems very interesting.

The Negative Energy Plane article is very good and has some mysteries of multiversal importance teased.

An ersatz angel looks like an angel, but certainly is not one. It's a fake angel. The bestiary itself uses the adjective "pallid" for them, giving you a hint how they're aligned.

Part of their alignment rhymes with "Weevil". :)

Any chance we can get a bestiary listing JUST because I like more stuff.

Also can said bestiary listing have CR, type, and alignment?
