Sins of the Past

Varisia has been destroyed! Runelord Alaznist's alteration of the past has thrown the frontier nation into chaos, devastated cities, resurrected demon lords, and worse. The Runelord of Wrath is now primed to seize control of a ruined realm, so that she can remake it into a New Thassilon with herself as its furious queen. Only one desperate plan can set things right—a band of heroes must discover a method to travel back in time and repair the damage their enemy has wrought on history, but can they make the sacrifices necessary for victory? This adventure allows the heroes to reach the absolute height of power, but even the potent options gained at 20th level may not be enough for the party to survive the furious might of Runelord Alaznist in her seat of power!

This volume of Pathfinder Adventure Path concludes the Return of the Runelords Adventure Path and includes:

  • "Rise of New Thassilon," a Pathfinder RPG adventure for 17th-level characters, by Greg A. Vaughan.
  • A brief exploration of how the Return of the Runelords Adventure Path will change Golarion in the future, including the first-ever map of the empire of Thassilon as it stood before the devastation of Earthfall, by James Jacobs.
  • A bestiary of monsters, including undead salamander forgemasters, living landslides, the mysterious hallowed lynxes used by runelords as pets and guardians, a planar dragon from the tumultuous Maelstrom, and the immense Great Old One Mhar itself, by John Compton, Andrew D. Geels, Lyz Liddell, Luis Loza, and David Schwartz.

Eh. I'm not convinced having two villains fight is that much of a waste. But I understand your POV.

Any news yet? Anyone get their copy?

They will start only today sending out hard copies, so I'd say "no". :p

Yes. You want to know anything?

I'd want to know about:

1. The name of the Maelstrom planar dragon.
2. The type, subtype, CR and size of the other new monsters.
3. The mythic path and tiers of Alaznist and Sorshen.

I haven't read it through yet, but these are so-called "key points" from the introduction:

Spoiler:

• All along the Lost Coast, eruptions of fire and burning fiends from ancient towers have devastated the region, and the towns of Sandpoint and Roderic’s Cove are no more.
• Kaer Maga has been taken over by a demon lord named Colyphyr, who has claimed the city as her domain in return for aid she granted to Alaznist.
• Korvosa has been devastated by the sudden appearance of and attack by a towering monster out of legend—the dread Oliphaunt of Jandelay.
• Magnimar has fallen to an army of powerful sinspawn and other monsters that used portals within the Irespan’s pilings as a point of invasion.

Spoiler:
I'm guessing that's Colyphyr, as mentioned above. Previously he was known to be slain by Nocticula and turned into an island in her realm of the Midnight Isles. This is the island visited in part 4 of Wrath of the Righteous, where Baphomet's daughter was mining Nahyndrian crystals. He seems to be not so much resurrected as prevented from being assassinated by temporal tampering.

Tumult dragon:

Spoiler:
It looks like it's made of various body parts of different creatures. It has an entropic breath weapon that reduces the hardness of objects and can be of any energy type. Ancient tumult dragons can also transform creatures with their breath, as with polymorph any object

Mhar:
Spoiler:
The description says "When Mhar awakened yet again, trapped within the crust of Golarion, it went mad, unable to escape its own torment." Maybe that's an explanation.

I think that's a big part of the adventure: play Legends of Tomorrow and fix the time aberrations.

Spoiler:
There's no way they'd really erase Sandpoint for good, especially not so short after coming out with a big Sandpoint book.

Now I'm really curious about this final chapter. Except my subscription hasn't granted me access to a PDF because it's been stuck in pending for nearly a week. Didn't do that for the other 5 and I know I'm not broke. (At least not yet...)

# Do we get a full body illustration of the demon lord? If so, could you describe it?

# Is Mhar still illustrated as a mountain or has it emerged in a new form?

# What are Sorshen and Alaznist's CR?

Dark Archive

Yeah, it is important to know if Mhar still looks like silly volcano with crystal bug legs :D

Paizo Charter Superscriber; Pathfinder Companion, Pathfinder Accessories Subscriber; Starfinder Charter Superscriber

No illustration of the demon lord, and Mhar is pictures as an erupting volcano mounted on crystalline legs.

Runelord CRs:
Sorshen is CR 27, Alaznist CR 24.

I just saw that Mhar was already listed as CE in his writeup in the "Elder Mythos" Article in Strange Aeons.

This is utterly normal.

After the initial pending email there is a variable wait of between short and very long before shipping occures and the pdf's are available. You may have some reason for concern after the 25th when shipping is projected to complete.

Yeah, can't wait. I've started doing my translations for the flavor text now (still on the first module, why so many rooms, aaaaaah!), this is one of the next AP's after my current one. It will be very nice to see how this one shakes out. :)

To reiterate questions:

Spoiler:
What are Sorshen and Alaznist's alignments?
Also, what are the enhancement bonuses and weapon special abilities of their Alara'qin?

The second question is mostly important for comparisons and deriving what Zutha and Xanderghul's Alara'qin may be like.

Dark Archive

Pretty sure its CE and CN and that is without me seeing the final book based on the previous books :p¨

Edit: Oh hey, noticed I got the download finally too! Nice

Huh, Sorshen is a trickster, not an archmage. And she has epic charisma, to say the least. ^^

@Dryad:

Spoiler:
Sorshen has a +5 keen speed spell-storing mithral guisarme. Can transform itself into a Staff of Enchantment. Gives a +luck bonus on attacks, saves, skill- and ability checks. Several spell-like abilities per day. More stuff.

Alaznist has a +3 keen spell-storing wounding adamantine ranseur. Also gives a luck bonuses on the same stuff as Sorshen's. Deals ability damage on a crit. Spell-like abilities and more.

I think it's because she likes to screw people over who displease her. See the side effect of being greedy in this encounter.

Anyway, I am a bit confused by the alignment of the Hallowed Lynx. Other than the method of their creation, nothing at all in the long write-up suggests that they are of evil alignment. Or is this a printing error?

In any case, an epic end for an epic campaign and a really good three-part story. I can't avoid thinking that Tyrant's Grasp will be somewhat of a let-down compared to this, though.

The Alaznist one strikes me as a bit odd, given how Shattered Star's article seemed to imply that she had eldritch knight levels. Ah well.

Ha. The living landslide is...

Bestiary:
a swarm of tiny elementals that can micm your are with avalanches, massive swarm damage, can huck BOULDERS at people and a CR19 rating. The fact it can also shake things so hard it can knock flying things from the sky.

Terrifying. And hilarious all at once. Not something people should take lightly.

And what about the Continuing the Campaign chapter:

What's Alaznist's fate?

What's Sorshen's fate?

Which other calamities would we face in the future?

Is there any hint of Nocticula's whereabouts or if she has indeed succeeded in becoming a goddess?

Instead of "Continuing the Campaign", there is "Beyond the Campaign" which works as epilogue for New Thassilon and two runelords who are assumed to survive plus info about new faction of rune magic researching wizards which is created.(also Nocticula's domains as redeemer queen, apparently she doesn't allow CE worshippers anymore)

On Nocticula... Well I decided I want to leave it surprise for people who read the book or play it through, but let's just say there is something really special for characters who worship the redeemer queen heresy

(in general, this part of the ap really feels like mythic adventure :D Maybe its because this is actually 17-20 level adventure and we haven't seen those from paizo before, but it really does feel epic in scope and events)

On Alaznist:
If she isn't defeated, she pretty much conquers whole Avistan eventually(up to Nidal and linnorm kings at least) whether before or after erasing her time line altering. If she is defeated, let's just say all those deals with qlippoth and demon lords backfires on her :D

Can we get a little more detail about the new faction of rune magic researching wizards which is created ?

They call themselves "Runelords". The most powerful member of the group is necromancer named Aethysa who claims to be reincarnation of previous two Runelords of Gluttony also called Aethysa :p

Thanks for the replies, both of you. It seems that this will be an amazing volume. I can't wait to read it!

I'm also hoping to see more of the Redeemer Queen in PF2E, as it would be really anticlimactic if she returned as a Demon Lord in future adventures. I would love to see her as one of the Inner Sea Gods.
