Roll20 Integration and PaizoCon

Thursday, May 15, 2025

Hello Heroes!
My name is Meredith Gerber, and I am the Partner Marketing Manager for Demiplane, DriveThruSites, and Roll20. It’s wonderful to be back as a guest blog poster, especially when I have some incredible news to share with you all.

Demiplane x Roll20 Integration

In case you missed it, we announced at the top of this year that we would launch several Roll20 x Demiplane Integration phases.

The Alpha Release allowed us to pull Starfinder Character Sheets from Demiplane into the Roll20 VTT. Additionally, Paizo was kind enough to unlock Cross-Platform Sync, which means if you unlock some game material on Demiplane that also exists on Roll20, you unlock it in both places for no additional cost (and vice versa).

Our Beta Release followed quickly last month, allowing all Demiplane Character Sheets to be pulled into the Roll20 VTT for a dynamic all-in-one experience.

  • Connected Play, Realized: For the first time, your Demiplane characters aren’t locked in the Demiplane platform. These characters can now exist on Demiplane and Roll20 – all ready to roll! No exporting or rebuilding. Link your account and you’re in!
  • Breaking Down Barriers for More Adventures: We introduced the Cross-Platform Sync and Shared Subscription benefits because we believe players should be able to dive into the fun part without any hassle. These two benefits have been live since February, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. No more jumping through hoops – just more gaming, everywhere, all at once!
  • Built for Every Table: Whether you prefer in-person games using Demiplane, virtual games on Roll20’s virtual tabletop, or a mix of both, today’s release has been designed to seamlessly fit into any existing game. We already have a campaign in the works, but if you want to try one of the new sheets, it's just a matter of connecting or creating a Demiplane account and linking your characters alongside existing character sheets.
  • A Strong Foundation for What’s Next: This Public Beta isn’t the end – it’s just the beginning. We're thrilled about the opportunity to bring characters to where you play. We’re excited about the potential of combining Demiplane’s ability to onboard new game systems, rapidly implement and support new game mechanics, and launch new character sheet capabilities. The future is bright, and we can't wait to share it with you.

A New Pathfinder Experience

This integration is beneficial to all players, but especially, right now, to Pathfinder Second Edition players. Pathfinder is one of the most popular systems on either platform. Because of this, we wanted to ensure that you have a seamless, elevated experience that gets out of the way and lets you (and your GM) focus on what makes your games epic.

  • Character Tools: Demiplane offers the most comprehensive, accessible character creation experience, whether you play online or in-person. With cross-linked digital companions, tooltips, and an accessible search, the Pathfinder NEXUS gives you everything you need. Create your heroes from the ground up, with brilliant, beautiful, intuitive character tools.
  • Most Up-to-Date: Demiplane’s patches and releases usually happen on the same day Paizo releases new content, or very soon after, meaning players can always access the newest mechanics, lore, and errata. There's no waiting for releases or information!
  • Expansive Library: The digital Pathfinder Second Edition library on Demiplane is second to none, and it includes not only rulebooks and sourcebooks, but also the latest adventure paths!
  • Cross-Platform Sync: No more purchasing content at full price in multiple locations, and no more switching back and forth. Thanks to Cross-Platform Sync, you can unlock your content once and enjoy it on both Roll20 and Demiplane. It's an integrated experience designed to make your gaming life easier.
  • Connected to Roll20 VTT: With the power of the Demiplane Character Tools for Pathfinder NEXUS and Starfinder NEXUS, plus Roll20's recent upgrades like Jumpgate and Foreground Layer, we are thrilled to have you experience this effortless adventure.
  • New Features and In-Sheet Purchases: We recently implementedfeat pre-requisities, variant rules support, and equipment purchasing. Our incredible dev David has given you the ability to purchase new items and content directly from the sheet in your Pathfinder and Starfinder games! From the item sidebar, click “buy with coin” to enable the option.

These updates and features are just the beginning. Our Demiplane development team works tirelessly to bring you more all the time, including exciting GM Tools.

Stay tuned for a sneak peek of what's to come at our upcoming panel (details below)!

As much as I love that getting new options for VTTs is great, buying into an ecosystem can get expensive. Having bought into Fantasy Grounds and Foundry, it would take something SERIOUS to move me to a new platform when I have so much money tied up in TWO VTTs.

Especially when something like Foundry makes playing the game so much easier. Effect tracking, bonus linking, easier leveling, so many mods to spice up the game...I understand why you would want to keep R20 up to date, so that people who don't want to buy into the VTT's have someplace that works perfectly fine. But there's a reason people like you and me have made the switch.

I think roll20 would need quite a team working for a very long time to get even close to the comfort of Foundry. And while I appreciate Demiplanes efforts to show me the rules in a nicer format, I appreciate not having to buy every book (again) even more.
In any case, good news for the people using roll20!

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

As someone who never switched over to Foundry, and a long time Roll20 user and subscriber, this is great news for me!

this looks interesting! but will only really become viable for me once demiplane updates their content sharing, so APs can be excluded. if that happens anytime soon, then we're cookin!

This is all wonderful, and I'm glad the integration is happening.

However, people who aren't seeing the conversations on Bluesky should be aware that import functionality for many PF2 sheets is temporarily disrupted, with the timing of its return unknown. It was not announced beforehand, nor was it mentioned here (bad form, imo). I was at a table on Wednesday where everyone except me was affected because I apparently imported my character right before it was switched off. We wasted half an hour trying to figure out what was happening and only found out when we tagged Roll20 (thank you to that team member for your quick response).

Anyone playing at a Roll20 table at PaizoCon next week, be aware that you may or may not be able to import your character.

Pathfinder Lost Omens, Rulebook, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

I have been avoiding Nexus simply because I would have to buy all the books again after having done so for Herolab. This is on top of the service being tied to a web portal ALA AOL Mail type of interface and after being burned when the license for 3.5 was pulled from Etools, forever ending support and nixing the next version of their expansive Forge engine that needed another six monthes to further develop.

For me, Having both Herolab and Nexus is not viable, and I will keep with the standard instead of the new shiny that would cost me more to have the same material that I already have with the other service.

The Roll20 clique is nice and all, though I am confused as to why it wasn't something that all character generators could use to fill the Roll20 sheet instead of the exclusive interaction with Nexus.

Sorry, but I will stick with Herolab.

R20 isn't the platform i use to run, but i wanted to still express my appreciation for the demiplane/paizocon sale nevertheless. Coupled with the discount from owning the pdfs + the 30% - cost of player core comes down to about $14 which makes it much more tempting to integrate into my amalgamation of books/convert to markdown.
I normally couldnt justify the extra cost even with the pdf discount for nexus - but that is much more approachable for me - enough for me to give Nexus a second look now.
