A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 3–7.

The sprawling maze of caverns and tunnels beneath the hilltop city of Kaer Maga are home to a host of dangers and mysteries. A dedicated group of guards called the Duskwardens is responsible for protecting Kaer Magans and visitors alike from everything that lurks below. Despite the Duskwardens' best efforts, the influence of one of the vaults has been spreading on to the streets of Kaer Maga. It falls to a group Pathfinder Society agents to navigate the factions of Kaer Maga to access and strike at the heart of the lurking threat.

Beyond the Halflight Path is an evergreen, replayable scenario designed to provide a flexible adventure that confronts the PCs with a variety of threats more common to higher-level characters. The scenario has nine different possible villains, as well as myriad other options for the GM to customize the dangers that the PCs face.

Fun, Kill things, go

4/5

Very RP light, which i like, the monster can be hard, so it seems this is meant to go kill stuff, which I also like. I though it was fun, but depending on the rolls and party I can see this becoming deadly

Easier evergreen

4/5

I ran this online for a party of 5 experienced high tier players.

I found this one much easier to run than Tome, but maybe because I knew what to expect this time. I managed to cut the prep time down, but it was still about 6 hours, some of that making sure I had only the pages I needed rather than flipping back and forward. I recommend culling out pages you don't need.

I picked a harder path than Tome, but my players managed to easily succeed, albeit running well over time. Don't spend too long on the investigation, the combats can take longer than you think.

I preferred the Tome map for dynamic lighting and fog of war, but this map made placing encounters easier. I would have preferred more doors though, my players could see for miles with their dark vision, so I had to take that into account when placing encounters.

The investigation wasn't overly well thought out, if you did them in a particular sequence you where fine, otherwise it cost you just because you randomly picked the wrong sequence.

I would, and probably will, run this again.

Surprised and pleased!

4/5

I am surprised and pleased!
.
Let's face it, most PFS scenarios are walks in the park, designed to grind through levels, where the worst disaster to befall most parties is the loss of a second prestige point (gasp), or maybe the use of expendable slightly more resources than the 1/4 the gp reward. The greatest scenarios are, of course, the ones that pose challenges; eg Bonekeep, The Haunting of Hinojai, The Waking Rune.
.
Well, this isn't that tough, but -- at least with the foe we faced -- it was tougher than the bulk of PFS scenarios. And it's evergreen! If the other enemies are equally challenging (or more challenging) this will be an awesome replay!
.
Yes, the pretext for the adventure is weak. But it's a reasonable excuse for a dungeon crawl. It's hard to make a replayable scenario in which NPC interactions and character motivations change; it's doable, but I wouldn't count on it.

I'm glad I can run it again because it was a blast

5/5

I ran it with a party of 5 using many of the "difficult" options, despite having an unoptimized party (Including a core Rogue, core Monk and a disguise-focused Vigilante). The party was able to breeze through the investigation, but the colorful cast and open-endedness of the rumors allowed for some great roleplay opportunity that really let me customize the experience on the fly for each of my players and their play styles. They used the map and their brains to great advantage in the dungeon. I will admit this is a biased review; I have a wonderful group, and playing it during Hanukkah with 75% of our encounters involving monsters from Jewish Qabbalism really made me appreciate the customability of the module. It was a challenge, for sure. In fact, one of my players said it was one of the best games they'd played in recent memory!

As a GM, you have to pick the route that most appeals to your style of roleplay. There are lots of options here to play enemies you don't commonly get to encounter in Pathfinder Society. And, at least in my prepared story route, there is an unmistakeably creepy vibe that really resonates with the players exploring the wonderful location of Kaer Maga.

An evergreen focused solely on tough encounters

2/5

Earlier this week I played this evergreen with my divine casting mesmerist on the high tier. I was really looking forward to it as the author is one of my favourites, if not my favourite. I love what he did with Dead Man's Debt and Wrath of the Fleshwarped Queen. Those scenarios are my go-to scenarios if I have to run something simply because I enjoy them so much. However, I have to say this particular scenario will not make an appearance on that list.

Even though this is an evergreen, I do not see myself playing this again. Don’t get me wrong: the fact that I was unlucky all the enemies we faced were mind-immune has nothing to do with it. I still had enough tricks up my sleeves and I could also still cast meaningful spells. The main reason why I won’t be playing this again is the distinct lack of role-play and story. While the scenario starts with some minor investigation, it basically boils down to roughly three or four diplomacy checks. Considering that’s also the only portion with role-play opportunities with NPCs, I honestly was a bit disappointed.

The rest of the scenario can basically be summarized as a dungeoncrawl with random encounters. In my case I faced some nasty creatures with even nastier tactics. The combats are definitely challenging and you really should be prepared for just about anything. However, the links between them monsters and the overall plot(s) is very thin to say the least. To me it felt more like ‘we need a reason for challenging monsters to be here, so let’s quickly give them a sentence or two before we return to making difficult encounters’. I personally need more than that and upon reading the scenario afterwards I don't think those needs will ever be met.

And so I’m left a bit disappointed. Once again the 3-7 evergreen provides little to no story. I mean, it’s there, but it’s very weak. What isn’t weak though, are the encounters. They can really be nasty and that’s the main reason why one should think about playing this scenario. If you really like difficult combats that will really challenge your character, this is a good scenario. In that case, and only in that case, I’d recommend it. If you’re looking for role-play, investigation and a strong storyline, I’d suggest looking elsewhere. I can of course only speak for myself, but if given the chance, I’ll without a doubt opt to play something else instead. Sadly, that's the opposite of the goal of an evergreen.

I must admit that I am nervous about returning to Kaer Maga. I really hope a particular NPC doesn't make her way into this scenario.

In planning this scenario, we specifically noted that said NPC should not appear here for reasons you're likely thinking.

I am glad to hear it, especially considering the replayable nature of the scenario.

Echoing this. Want to make sure I have it when I (probably) run this.

Scarab Sages

This scenario sounds like a lot of fun. I love Kaer Maga. I would also love to know what the map list includes as I already have it scheduled for a gameday about a week after its release.

Yay! More Kaer Maga madness!!!

Just one map for 'From the Tome of Righteous Repose' and just one map for 'Beyond the Halflight Path'? I am loving that trend!

Same. Makes life very easy when it comes to prep and running the game.

It's definitely nice when it can work out that way, and the Bigger Flip-Mat line has provided us with some fertile ground for this style of adventure. It's a trend we hope to continue, map opportunities willing.

Awesome. In the meantime, hopefully some of the maps we need for other scenarios, that are currently discontinued, will see the light of day once more as Classics.

EDIT: Looking forward to seeing this scenario in action.

I'm not well-versed in Kaer Maga lore at all and was reading the title as "Below the Halfling Path" by mistake for a while. My hype went through the roof and then someone told me this scenario is not about halflings :(
Still hyped though.

Very cool!

It seems that Twisted Caverns is meant to replace things like Darklands Flip Mat.

What time do these things become clickable?
Thought if something was supposed to be released on 11/29 I would beable to click before it becomes 11/30...

It's actually both. She said she was going to work on the issue about not being able to obtain the PDF normally when she came into work this morning, but the issues from yesterday had kept her well past her shift. So hopefully today it'll be resolved.

This module was nothing but a ton of fun and I loved it. So far, by far, the best PFS Adventure I have had the pleasure to play.

Enough RP to be engaging, but not so much to bog everyone down with exposition. The visual and story elements were more than enough to get the story going and give us a real feel for things.

My Favorite NPC::
The troll soothsayer? Talk about reading entrails!

I only played it once, and I understand that it can change each time, so I can only speak from the scenario we did, so, going from there...

Oh what a nasty monster!:
We ran into a Golem, and oh my good gracious was that thing a hard fight. We had a mixed group of 1 4, 1 5, and 3 7's. It was incredibly fun and challenging.

10/10 this was my favorite adventure in PFS so far.

Scarab Sages

Question about some text in the scenario.

Spoiler:

Page 28 and 29 it refers to the Shining Deep for Handout #4 and after the NPC Text. Is it supposed to mean Sparklegrim Passage or actually the Shining Deep?

Kyle, take the red pill! Come to the GM thread on this topic! Yes, that is a typo. Ignore it. It is one of many bizarre and sometimes amusing typos in this fabulous build your own dungeon adventure.

An update! An update!

We have updated the Pathfinder Society Scenario #9-09: Beyond the Halflight Path PDF with the following changes:
  • Created a new file of three chronicle sheets, one for each vault, for player use. Each sheet sorts treasure by story arc.
  • Moved the existing chronicle sheet to the back of the file.
  • Added DCs for saving throws to the sidebar about check DCs.
  • Added clarification that GMs may select the ceiling height in each room to best fit the chosen encounters.
  • Fixed various typos, including cleaning up the charts in the back of
the book to make it clearer which monsters appear at which subtier.
If you wish to download the updated version, you may do so for free at http://paizo.com/paizo/account/assets.

The everything-on-one-sheet chronicle remains in the back of the scenario, and is still given to GMs. However, there are now three neatly-organized chronicles that can be given out to players. It's a very nice update!

I haven't gone through explicitly to compare typos and the like, but what I saw looked fixed. The save DCs were there, for example.
