The Ironfang Invasion will be considered a modern classic!

5/5

I thoroughly enjoyed going through this issue in preparation to run Pathfinder Adventure Path 117: Assault on Longshadow. This issue is packed with info on the Ironfang Legion, new troop types, wereraptors, leshies and a gazetteer on the Nesmian Plains.

It reminds me of the classic Paizo published Dungeon magazines in that they are packed with material that is not only integral to the adventure at hand, but useful to GMs and players outside of the context of the adventure.

Blood Will flow

5/5

I have GMed this.

What an excellent and brave way to start an AP. Lots of player freedom, and an endless supply of baddies to throw at the PCs. Make sure your players have family etc. in the starting settlement. This really suits a mounted and martial party.

My favourite AP by far was Kingmaker. Until now. May be a close call by the time we get to the end.

If you like lots player freedom, GM freedom, and adventure landscape style play this is for you.

Well done Paizo

Fresh Feel Guerilla Warfare

4/5

GOOD:
The art really shines: from the cover over the interior full body illustrations, to the headshots and half page scenes.
Also all encounter battle-maps are designed really evocative and fun to play on.
Lots of possible player decisions are covered.
Very informative sidebars.
Players can get their hands on a lot of cool gear.
The NPCs are solidly designed.
The two new Leshy and the Wereraptor.

BAD:
Managing the refugees and assigning each one a daily duty seems bothersome and most players i know won´t like it.
A "Refugees character sheet" would have been useful for an overview.
A bigger map of Phaendar on the inside front cover would have been more useful than the smaller than 1/4th page one on page 22 - it certainly is a nice map and the place where the entire first session takes place.
The "Southern Chernasardo" map on page 22 is much too small and would have been so much better as a hexploration map. At the size it is, it´s pretty much guesswork where the characters are going exactly.
"Part 2" is a little jumbled and would have benefited from a clearer structure or at least a timetable sidebar.
There is no mention of the settlements "Ecru", "Redburrow" or "Radya´s Hollow" from the inside front cover in the Nesmian plains section, which otherwise is solid.

UGLY:
The inside front cover map doesn´t line up with the one on page 66 in all details, especially #8 "Cavlinor" is in two different places.

This really feels like a classic fantasy adventure!

Solid part One

4/5

This adventure path gets back to the basics, and has a healthy dose of wilderness encounters. Lots of hobgoblins to fight, but there are other critters too. I like the art for the hobgoblins and bugbear, very nice.

Spoiler:

There isn't much Iconic art. It looks like most of the art went to NPCs/monsters/foes. The pieces there are are good, I think. Mostly action pieces.

Besides the eventual Player's Guide, and CS:Lands of Conflict, are there any other supplements for this AP that are out or coming out?

Yes, there are:

-the Ironfang poster-map folio in july,

-the Monster Hunter´s Handbook in march

and the "Ironfang Invasion Pawn Collection" (probably) in october.

Monster Hunter's Handbook, while a cool book, has nothing to do with this AP. Please stop giving people false information with an officious tone.

So just the eventual Player's Guide, Map Folio, and Pawns?

Questions:

1) What's the deal with the Ironfang Legion? How did they form and who's backing them?

2) How big is the assault on Phaendar at the beginning? Is it "Attempt to oppose the advancing army until you must retreat" or "Fly, you fools!"?

3) Judging by this volume, how much involvement does Molthune have in this AP? Not a huge one, if I understand correctly, but how much are they mentioned?

Just quoting so it doesn't get buried

I's a lycanthrope based on a predatory bird. There's a 2-page write-up in the bestiary that details them further, including stat blocks for human and hybrid forms.

Lands of Conflict says "Phaendar" is further detailed in here.

Is there a map, gazetteer, NPCs?
How many pages?
Can you save people?

Thank you.

I'm attempting to answer these from a very high level POV because there are a lot of very spoilery details in these questions.

Axial wrote:
1) What's the deal with the Ironfang Legion? How did they form and who's backing them?

Spoiler:

The Ironfang Legion is a hobgoblin merc company turned legit army out to carve their own little piece of the world.

Axial wrote:

Spoiler:

The assault is big enough to wipe away the town.

Mouthune is backstory so far.

Spoiler:

There are details on Phaendar, but I don't think it rises to the level of gazetteer. There are maps on individual encounter areas, etc. There are some NPCs that are discussed. It's not easily measured in pages.

You can potentially save people.

I noticed. :)

But I'll say that it'd be easy to miss, since those pages are gobbled up by other articles.

Crystal wrote a nice forward.

Do we get any time to interact with the town or any tasks to do there, or does the AP basically begin with "We're under attack!"

Axial wrote:

Spoiler:

The AP opens pretty quickly with the action, but there's some GM discretion baked in on exactly how and where that takes place. The opening reminds me of the original RotRL (before the AE added in a bunch of festival games, etc.).

Is there a map of the town/settlement, and if so, is it designed to be used for battle encounters?

Spoiler:

There is a map of town. It's about a quarter page and it's annotated. It's not meant for enounters. There are separate maps of several encounter areas within town.

No to that, doc. There are comments running around implying that it exists, but it must not be in publishable form yet.

Amber laid out a good story, IMO. It's different (so far) than most of the others I've read/GM'd. There's a sense of urgency right from the beginning that really drives you, and depending upon the path you take, some of your other options change as well (not significantly, but enough to make it matter).

Iconic art = pieces of artwork featuring the Iconic characters that are part of the pathfinder RPG/Setting.

Spoiler:

I went back and looked again. There are four pictures featuring Iconic characters on pages 4, 43, 57, & 80. Out of about three dozen pieces of artowrk (not counting maps, covers, or advertisements), I don't consider 4 to be "much." YMMV.

Our GM has not gotten his yet sadly, soon I hope, as he is serving our country (US) in the military doing a tour in Korea and this should fit him perfectly.

I beleave he subscribed just to get this AP last month so not sure if that might delay things for him or its just random luck who gets what when.

We were hoping to start this friday but 3 now 2 prep days usually does'nt work (LOL), so next Friday is our new game evening hopefully.

And no Players guide yet in sight.... SIGH

Ahh. Considering that this AP mirrors a lot of the nebulous ideas that have been running through my home game I'm interested to see how Paizo approached the topic of refugees in a growing conflict.

Now, that said, I wish they'd thrown up some vermin companion stats for the new bugs in book two. I kind of want the option to have a giant cicada mount or a giant cricket hunting dog.

Happened with Hell's Vengeance as well... it even came out after the street date, but to be fair, the Humble Bundle thing didn't help.
