A Beacon of Hope in a Shattered World

Seeking four mysterious gates that could be the key to returning to their own world, your heroes dive into the dangerous asteroid colonies of the Shattered Zone. The polluted mines and hurtling planetoids are deadly on their own, but the infighting of the Zone's fractious factions is even more so, from the sadistic Contraptors to the fanatical soldiers of Purity, where factions and their adherents rise and fall and morality runs from gray to black. The PCs must navigate a broken world of deceit, moral compromise, and necessary sacrifices amid a grimy cybernetic dystopia, and all the while an ancient horror reaches from beyond the fourfold gates, waiting for those with the touch of destiny to come and set it free. There are secrets of the Patrons at stake, and the rewards are great, but only if the heroes can survive the deadly intrigues of the Confederates of the Shattered Zone.

Is it just me or is part 3 of this adventurepath missing? I can't seem to find it on the Legendary Games website either.

Part 3 of this Adventure Path has, for various reasons, not been released (at the time of this writing). It should be the next release, though.

Yep, we had a number of issues along the way that ended up with #3 getting delayed and #4 was ready to proceed, so rather than stalling the entire process we skipped ahead and got #4 up and out the door for PF and 5E.

On the plus side, #3 starts layout this weekend!

Oh, hey Jason, I just noticed you gave Mike Shel and me credit for the adventure in your blurb. That should actually be the esteemed Richard Pett. :)

    Why yes there is!

We do sell print versions of some products through Paizo, but we haven't yet set up a print version on this adventure. For those interested...

    Spoiler:
We've gradually moved away from selling most print products here just because of the way print distribution works. For print books, Paizo is a consignment reseller, which means we buy, print, and ship books to them but we get paid nothing up front. When books sell, we then get 50% of the sale price. Selling on consignment is essentially a bet that all books will sell; if they don't, we end up likely to lose money on the arrangement.

Take a hypothetical book to illustrate the point.

Say it costs $5 to print plus $1 to ship for each copy to Paizo, and the print book sells for $14.99. We pay $6 for the book, and *if* it sells, we make half of $14.99, which is $7.50. Best-case scenario, we make $1.50. If we order 10 books for Paizo ($60 all told), we'd need to sell 8 of those 10 books just to break even, before you made a cent in profit. If we sell 7 or fewer, we lose money.

If people buy a print/PDF bundle, it works out a bit better, but really just changes the equation to needing to sell 6 or 7 books to break even instead of 8.

Meanwhile, if the book's PDF sells for $9.99, and we get 75% on each copy of the PDF sold or $7.50.

In other words, we'd need to sell 5 copies of our hypothetical book as a print book to earn the same $7.50 that we'd make from a single PDF sale. From the customer end, we make as much on $10 of customer money with one PDF sale as we would on $75 of customer money (plus 5 x shipping) with 5 print sales.

Obviously the profit margin on books varies based on actual print and ship cost, whether you have to pay tax (certain print vendors charge it even though it's technically a wholesale transaction), and so on, but the TL;DR is that consignment print sales are usually a bad deal for small companies.

When you buy from us, we get the full amount (less print costs and transaction fees) and can print exactly the number we need.

That's why we have dialed back what we offer for sale as print books here at Paizo, but we would love to get you the book directly from us!
