A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 1–5.
The Peerless Empire of shaitan genies has warred with their fiery counterparts for centuries, and thinly stretched resources leave the shaitans in need of additional aid. They have founded a new state-sanctioned mercenary company known as the Ungrounded, which draws upon free agents from across the multiverse. One of the Society’s few friends on the Plane of Earth has recommended at least a handful of Pathfinders join the Ungrounded, knowing that even a few months’ service could dramatically enhance the Society’s reputation (and fill those agents’ pockets) in this distant realm. The PCs travel to the magnificent Opaline Vault as the Society’s first envoys, but in doing so they must survive the otherworldly threats that lurk in both this strange environment and within their own ranks.
Content in “Ungrounded but Unbroken” also contributes directly to the ongoing storyline of the Sovereign Court faction.
This scenario is designed for play in Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild but can easily be adapted for use with any world. This scenario is compliant with the Open Game License (OGL) and is suitable for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.
I recently ran this scenario. When first reading it over beforehand it seemed okay with some cool set pieces in a different plane. When actually running it ran into the 4th wall very quickly with the party, as they were looking for the hidden pieces of story behind what was happening as opposed to following what they were ordered to do. I can get behind the reasons to a extent as the mission goes out of its way to make your players feel like crap with degrading work and fairly high and plentiful skill checks for the tier and then role play wise berating them if they fail them. That being said the combats in general are easy for even moderate players and a cake walk to a power gamer. The casino section is the star attraction of the whole scenario which we had to cut down for time, which is a shame since it is the one set piece in the adventure that shows off the different plane and its oddities and charm. The potential combat there is awesome in concept, but has things in it which don't make much or any sense and while comes off a cool to a gm is also either a easy fight or potential character death depending on tier and how the situation plays about. The finale of the scenario is alright, but I'm torn on the mechanic, as while it does prevent the barbarians from just hiding behind the party face in a social encounter, it could also punish skill characters surrounded by negative charisma characters.
Yes this is a short review. That is because I honestly don't feel this scenario deserves the effort to say anything about it (yes it's that bad).
I felt my entire play experience (from a good GM I respect a lot) was more about figuring out craptastic mechanics than actually playing Pathfinder. Terrible.
Ran this on 4-5 subtier the evening after it was released and the party really seemed to fall into jobs there. The initial set-up is simple enough, but it may be a little difficult to get the ball rolling depending on party tactics. The mission isn't what they think it will be, but once it becomes apparent, it's a race against the elements. Some information that players would ask for was not provided in the scenario, but nothing so key as to unhinge the entire sequence of events and was easy enough to come with answers off the cuff. When all was said and done, I feel like the 6 players had a fun time, even if they might have felt like they were being hazed or purposefully given the grunt work.
Fairly easy to prepare for as a GM. Helpful to have lots of elementally-appropriate minis to use to fill the ranks as background noise.
Unfortunately, the date did shift as a result of initial growing pains as we adjust our production to account for all of the digital subscription service's needs. This should be a one-time event, and future months' adventures should return to the expected last Wednesday of the month release. I note this in today's blog, which released a few hours after you made your post.
