Is Your Mind Your Own?

It's one thing to face foes like ravenous beasts, fire-breathing dragons, and marauding monsters, but what about ghosts that can hop from body to body? How do you face a fiend that's using an innocent pawn as a proxy for its evil? Are there ways being haunted could be turned to your advantage? Prepare yourself for the answers to these questions and more as you explore what it's like to be a haunted hero!

Inside this book, you'll find:

  • New archetypes, feats, and traits that build upon your character's past and explore eerie powers gained from being haunted by spirits.
  • Rules for a new category of magic: haunted spells, which operate in ghostly ways to mimic the sinister manifestation of haunts.
  • An exploration of how different faiths of the Inner Sea region and beyond deal with haunts and the influence of the spirit world.

This Pathfinder Player Companion is intended for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game and the Pathfinder campaign setting, but can be easily incorporated into any fantasy world.

Is 6 stars a thing?

Wow, Paizo really hit it out of the park with this one. The book offers powerful (but not overly so) options for many different types of characters. What makes these options stand out is the flavor they provide.

Two quick examples:

Possessed Hand is a feat that adds a bonus to hit and damage with one handed weapons, light weapons and unarmed strikes. It also has a variety of other small effects. What makes it amazing is the flavor behind it. "You’ve made a peaceful and permanent bargain with a ghost, spirit, or outsider. It possesses your hand, guiding
and aiding you in exchange for help in return." What makes it even better is that there is a feat tree that builds off of this.

Haunted Spells are a group of spells that function as haunts (what a concept). I cannot wait to use a few of these in game. The flavor is overflowing. I really hope these get made PFS legal.

I don't remember the last time I was this happy with a product. A definite buy for those who like this type of flavor and options.

The only thing I can say about the cover is I like Caller in Darkness.

That's about it.

We'll see how it goes when it gets closer to September.

I'm excited for occult class love, especially medium which I'm fairly certain will have an archetype.

Weird, I could have sworn the description used to have a line about "making pacts with otherworldly powers", which could have meant Harrow Medium or something similar. But now it sounds like it's just going to include some legendary spirits for the other Medium. That's disappointing.

Alchemiac,

I'm sure they'll figure something to make a Harrow Medium come to life down the road. This is more for Horror than Harrow.

Maybe, although it does already exist and it's just locked up in a cupboard someplace. I'm just pointing out that the description seems to have changed which severely dropped my enthusiasm.

Well that's understandable Alchemiac. But my interest in this hasn't dimmed. Then again I'm a dark fantasy/light horror kind of guy. ;)

While I'm just as excited as you to see my little Harrow medium show up some day, I can pretty much guarantee it won't be in a Player Companion, simply due to its length compared to the length of a Player Companion.

Thank you for telling us that Mister Seifter! :)

I'm just saying it could be the *entire* Companion book, maybe add some archetypes for Occultist and Witch and Bard or something. That would be super hype.

Well... I think Mark has mentioned before that the Player Companion line of books do not have enough pages to hold his Harrow Medium.

So, if the Harrow medium itself won't fit, I doubt there would be any room to include some archetypes, too. At least, not in the same book.

Of course, things might've changed since then. OR I am misremembering. :p

It would be AWESOME to see the Harrow Medium sometime in the future...

I'd like to avoid derailing this thread about Harrowed medium if possible, so maybe start a new thread elsewhere? As a final tidbit, perhaps a worthy one for a starting post in that new thread, someone asked in an AMA for the Paizo GenCon Industry Insiders "Harrow Medium when?" And Wes Schneider (arguably one of the most influential people at the company in deciding what the answer to that question will be) responded "Any time now." Admittedly, that was news to me when he said it, as last I heard from within the company, it was still not a sure thing and was unlikely to be soon even if so. Let's continue discussion of Harrowed medium in another thread so this one can focus on Haunted Heroes Handbook.

The Harrow medium was never slated for this book. Sorry to disappoint.

What about well done harrow, Mister Stephens? ;)

Will this book replace the Horror Origins companion?

The very beginning of the Corruption chapter in Horror Adventures made me realize that we NEED a Drow corruption (elf-only, of course)

Please ?

Or maybe Corruptions of Golarion in the Campaign Setting line ? ;-)

Is this REALLY the final product description? It seems like its missing the usual pizzazz.

Secret Wiz,

I dunno. I like the cover art more than the placeholder.

I'm just surprised there's no examples of the content in there except the haunted spells. Compared to something like the Planes of Power, it seems to be very scant.

I'm sure we'll get more in a few weeks, Secret.

Certain this is a soft tie-in to Horror Adventures. I personally see the Origins books as ways to give context to new classes, or new rulesets that have that broad an impact (like mythic), for which it may not be obvious how they tie in to Golarion. For the most part, I think the context of horror-themed things in Golarion is pretty intuitive.

Not to mention pretty much tied into Golarion, right Mister Stephens?

Getting back to this book, what archetypes ARE there going to be? Obviously Medium/Spiritualist stuff, but is that all we can expect for "being haunted by spirits"? Like a Brawler who channels ghosts to get his feats and can risk influence to get more might be cool.

Maybe but I'd hope for something akin to that one druid archetype in Horror Adventures, but you can have animal phantoms as 'spirit' companions.

Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

That's not really that different from the base class though, you'd just be grabbing an animal companion that you can stick in your skull as ectoplasm. That's like a feat or two, not a whole archetype.

No I think it could be Alchemaic. I'm just offering suggestions.

I am very interested in this book. I've started implementing both Ultimate Intrigue and the new Horror book into my campaign. I want to see what this book has to offer, and if I can apply it to the game I'm currently running.

In a city where assassination is common, there are bound to be a number of people haunted by their past.

Also, I am really interested in the Harrow Medium. Is there any chance that it could get it's own book, like an expanded Harrow Player's Companion.

It should be coming within the next week or 10 days, right? Or has the Con delayed shipping?
This one is a bit more vague in its final description, so I am a little more eager for my PDF as I have a little less idea of what to expect... But hey, the Companion line products have been dynamite lately, so that's another reason I am eager.

This conversation has its own thread to avoid de-railing, as can be seen and linked to in the quotes below.

Long story short, Mark doesn't know when the Harrow Medium will be released, but it will not be as part of its own player companion due to extreme length, as Player Companions will not exceed 32 pages.

He has considered it possible that it could be part of a future Campaign Setting release, but that is more conjecture than anything substantiated, as he has said that when and where it will be released is not entirely up to him.

Got my "shipping soon" e-mail last night. Kind of excited. I'm really curious about this one.

Shadow Lodge

Really, I could care less for any Occult Adventures related material, and I'm hoping to see so Roaming Exorcist and general Cleric and Paladin love here.

DM Beckett,

I like Occult stuff. But yes more cleric and paladin love would be nice. :)

Pathfinder Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

To each their own. Personally, I will never play a cleric or paladin, so I'd much rather see material for psychics and spiritualists and other such. So, in the interest of meeting the needs of multiple customers with diverse interest, let's hope that Paizo has us both covered, no?

Luthorne,

I hope both are covered for sure.

So I have a witch who is haunted by her dead twin sister...I always left it kinda vague on rather she is actually haunted or just really insane. Mostly because there really no mechanics for a witch to cover it.

So I am wondering if there will be a feat or something (not a archetype...the character all ready has one) that could be used for this?

I just mean I don't really care if they have some psychic material in there, I'd just personally much rather see some cool and fun divine options for a change. Ideally there would be a lot of things in there that does not have any sort of class-based prereqs, or if it does, it's vague such as the ability to cast Protection from Evil/Magic Circle vs Evil or Speak with Dead, (which would cover Clerics, Mediums, Spiritualists, and partially Witches).

I imagine there might be one in this book. on the other hand, i imagine it could be possible to have that kind of situation to be portrayed through the haunting curse(with some slight tweaks to tailor it to fit), or through possession corruption(again with some minor tweaks). Fingers crossed on there being a feat or something to cover that, but this is just my 2sp on the subject.

Eris,

It would be nice to see something like that so I can have a spirit/phantom/ghost for my character that's haunted by his dead dog.

Yeah the Oracle curse haunted would be good but the character is a witch.

The possession corruption would not make sense as it is a beneficial haunting. Her twin sister would want to protect her.

Ideal would a feat that gives a character a former of share consciousness from the Spiritualist class.
