Down with Thrune!

It's the one hundredth volume of the Pathfinder Adventure Path! Too long has the diabolic Lord-Mayor Barzillai Thrune inflicted cruelties and increasingly oppressive laws on his citizens. An epic fourth leg to an urban sandbox AP

(Preliminary note: Hell's Rebels is a series of urban sandbox adventures. Like most sandbox adventures, these adventures especially benefit from a DM who is willing (i) to tailor the adventure to the motivations and goals of the particular party, (ii) to allow players to be proactive, and to shape the adventure around their decisions, and (iii) to allow the party to try (and succeed at) dealing with problems in unexpected ways. So while these adventures run fine "out of the box", they work best with experienced and flexible DMs who are willing to put in a little extra work.)

We haven't finished A Song of Silver yet, so this review is largely based on my impressions from reading through the adventure. So far this has been a lot of fun, and I expect it to be among the best legs to date, second only to The Dance of the Damned. It wraps up some loose ends, allows the party to finally let loose on the authorities, and has a number of opportunities for a "special-ops"-style party to shine. There aren't quite as many role-playing opportunities in this leg of the AP as there were in the previous three legs. But the Temple of Asmodeus looks to have some pretty epic encounters, ones I expect my players will remember for a long time.

Some of the things the players enjoyed, and some expected highlights:

  • --Repelling the Thrunish Counterstrike on the player's base
  • --Infiltrating Kintargo Keep
  • --The epic battle in the main hall of the Temple of Asmodeus
  • --The frighteningly difficult task of Exorcising the Devil's Bells

Some tweaks we used/are planning to use to strengthen the narrative:

  • --Each of the missions in the first half of this AP are tied to the liberation of a part of the city. But in some cases there isn't much, narratively-speaking, to tie the missions and liberations together. A few tweaks to make the connection a bit tighter:
  • --Adding a written contract between Natsiel and Barzillai to Natsiel's possessions, and having the public release of these documents (demonstrating Barzillai's willingness to let Natsiel prey on the people of Jarvis End) lead the people of Jarvis End to rise up and ally with Silver Ravens.
  • --Having Tiarise and her inquisitor troops be in explicit control of The Greens (employing martial law to keep the population of The Greens compliant), so that once they're defeated, the populace will gladly join the Silver Ravens.
  • --Adding a written contract between Hei-Fen and Barzillai to Hei-Fen's possessions, and having the public release of these documents (demonstrating Barzillai's willingness to let the skinsaw cultists prey on the people of Villegre) lead the people of Villegre to rise up and ally with Silver Ravens.

Overall assessment: Another great leg of this AP, up there with the very best AP 4th legs (like The End of Eternity and The Wake of the Watcher). 5 stars.

Short disclaimer: I have not run this module. That being said, the bonus material alone is fantastic. One new NPC for each previous adventure path, plus some killer critters in the bestiary. Flipping through the module section, I see lots of interesting encounters that would be very challenging, indeed, to a party of 10+ level adventurers.

We don't assign handiness to our characters, because often the art has to be flipped for various reasons. For the record, Shensen is right-handed, but she's badass and can stab with her left hand if she wants since the game doesn't model hand dominance. It's a non-action to switch a weapon to either hand anyway.

As for the dragon....

Each one has full body art. They're all presented in pretty much the same format as we've been presenting the key NPCs for the adventure paths themselves since Jade Regent.

Silver is very much one of the themes in Hell's Rebels. Silver = Good in this adventure, essentially. Also, since silver (the ore) and silver salmon are two of Kintargo's big exports, and a third one being salt (that has a silvery sheen)... well... silver is the big theme for good overall, basically.

Remember: Lots of devils have damage reduction that's penetrated by silver!

It would be amusing if House Thrune had already come up with the "cold iron city" idea (since they hate demons as much as good aligned people do), thereby indirectly providing inspiration for the people of Kintargo who are rebelling against them.

Not quite true. The "Demons and Devils hate each other" trope is D&D, particularly arising from the Blood War, and we don't have that in our game, partially so as to avoid infringing on intellectual property (the Blood War), but mostly in an attempt to forge our own path in familiar territory. Thrune doesn't work with demons and they despise the chaos they bring, but they don't really go out of their way to fight them. They've got plenty more compelling things to do with their time.

Also, Kintargo doesn't need that kind of inspiration. They're pretty self-motivated.

I would imagine that within days (and certainly weeks) this #100 issue will be arriving at Paizo's offices to await eventual shipment to subscribers and stores.

I remember receiving my copy of AP#1 in the mail, as a replacement for my then expired Dungeon subscription. While I wasn't angry about getting Pathfinder AP, I certainly wasn't happy about the end of Dungeon.

Eight years later and I am still not happy about the end of Dungeon, but at least I can be philosophical about it now. Moreover, if I had to choose between Pathfinder or Dungeon/Dragon, it would be Pathfinder a million times over. I'd make that choice awoken at 3:30 a.m., dead drunk. Every. Single. Time.

What a supremely *satisfying* moment this must have been for you all to ship this one off to the printer.

Congratulations to Lisa Stevens, Erik, James, Wes, Jason and the entire Paizo staff.

But I wasn't making any reference to how devils feel about demons -- I was referring to Chelaxian humans, formerly worshipers of the lawful neutral god emperor Aroden, among whom worship of any fiend other than Asmodeus presumably remains a capital crime. I would imagine that the only reason they haven't come up with any special methods for dealing with demons is that they haven't had to -- that, and their methods for dealing with azatas (other than "smite good") can be used against demons as well.

Let´s not forget this issue has 32 extra pages, a battlemap and more contributors than a normal issue of the AP line.

It´s understandable that this product takes a little longer to finish than normal.
The most important thing for me is that the quality is good so in this special case 28 days more waiting is ok in my book.

Also we get two issues for x-mas under the tree. ;-)

This issue shifted due to some estimates we got back about it's estimated arrival in our warehouse. Once we have more concrete information, we'll alert folks about any potential doubled-up month as we generally do for these situations.


Guys let's not get too hung up on the December stuff, a lot of the previous November AP volume have been moved to December for various reasons (i think that it's usually the big sale), this one will also be moved (although for different reasons as it seems).

Statline:
Ayavah is an intersexed demon-blooded tiefling and 8th-level sorcerer.

She's also a heretic worshiper of Nocticula - she believes that Nocticula is a fallen empyreal lord who seeks redemption and ascension to (chaotic neutral) godhood. It's fascinating stuff.

Role:
I'm as uncertain as you are, especially since her home is Magnimar - a long way from the Worldwound. My campaign is probably going to feature the redemption of Nocticula, though, so I'm looking forward to finding out!

For the record, the Easter Egg in City of Locusts is "Ayavah was right!" So... there's that. ^_^

In your defense, the book was originally slated for release this month, but slipped to December a week ago, or so.
