A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 1-5.

The metropolis of Absalom promotes commerce in its many forms, and although slavery is legal, it is increasingly common for citizens to frown on the institution. The practice becomes more questionable when an ally of the Pathfinder Society traces an attempt at supernatural surveillance through a slave. Sent as independent sleuths, the PCs must track down the source of this espionage, which takes them deep into underbelly of one of Absalom’s darkest industries.

Content in “Slave Ships of Absalom” also contributes directly to the ongoing storylines of the Liberty’s Edge and Sovereign Court factions.

This scenario is designed for play in Pathfinder Society Organized Play, but can easily be adapted for use with any world. This scenario is compliant with the Open Game License (OGL) and is suitable for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.

Great Scenario!

This scenario was really a blast to run. The prep for it was easy, only requires 3 maps, nothing too extravagant. The scenario is well-structured: it has a great balance of role-playing, combat, investigation and serves as a great lead-in for a scenario later in Season 6.

While it isn't the most difficult scenario, a party which is not-well balanced will have challenges. Pathfinders must be well-prepared, and ready to deal with surprises and challenges that might arise. Some good die rolls on the part of the GM, however, can make any of the encounters deadly, so PCs must be adaptable and creative in pinch.

The first time I ran this scenario, it took about 3 1/2 hours, give or take (with a short break.)


First TPK as a GM

Granted, the TPK was definitely not the scenario's fault. The party lead the charge healing cleric first to the second to the last fight (the highest CR fight in the scenario) and then proceeded to open the door that triggered the final fight with aforementioned cleric unconscious on the ground and the other fight unresolved. Ended very quickly after that.

All of that said I loved the NPCs in this scenario, well fleshed out and a lot of fun to play. Lady Darchana's complete lack of regard for any interruptions was particularly fun for me. OOCly I'm regularly telling certain players to give others a chance to talk, so when one of the quieter players spoke up first it allowed me to let them run the conversation and shut down the power gamers icly when they tried to add their two cents.


Straightforward yet surprising

I thoroughly enjoyed this scenario. It's got quite a bit of RP in it, but it's not super-complex intrigue, so I think it's also accessible to relative beginners. And it even has something in it to make sure that everyone gets to participate in the RP, not just the people with a dominating Diplomacy score.

Besides the RP, this scenario also has some good fights in it. Pretty dangerous fights actually; unlike many other 1-5s, this scenario has teeth. If you like to play powerfully built characters against a challenging scenario (like me), you'll appreciate that.

It certainly taught my investigator a lesson; he was getting a bit cocky, but the paladin had to save his bacon from the thing on the front cover.

I do wish they'd be a bit more subtle with front covers; it's a bit spoilerish.

One of the best scenario that I've seen

RP, Combat, Mistery, Investigation, Stealth - all included. Maybe one of the best for low-tier games.

Having both played and GM'ed this scenario, this one is definitely made my short for 'to be run again'.

What I liked:
- Talk or fight. For many encounters, the scenario offers both a diplomatic and a rowdy solution.
- Part of the universe: It's good to see recurring characters. The description of Lady Darchana gave me something to work with in the Hellknight's feast, and made her something more than a minor NPC
- The backstory: The first two sentences of the scenario made me very happy.
- The little details: intricate descriptions of NPC's mannerisms really help bringing the characters to life.

On Lady Darchana:

Lady Darchana is a high-ranking and powerful noble, and quite enigmatic. Her interrogation style immediately put the players on edge, a trick I appreciated very much.

One thing that did strike me as a design oddity was the callback to Hellknight's feast. That scenario is a 5-9, and this is a 1-5 scenario, so chances are very low of anyone having the Hellknight's feast chronicle when running this scenario.

There are some significant thematic ties, but I think it's just a bit to much of a stretch to call this a true sequel.

Sounds good. Not really a great deal to be a sequel too, story-wise, but it sounds like it could work very well for a follow-up scenario, doing the two close to together.

Also, I'm hoping on running this ASAP, possibly on Friday (GMT+2...) so if Paizo releases this on Thursday afternoon (say, 5pm), I'll have maybe 15 hours before I'm supposed to run it.

It is worth noting that Slave Ships of Absalom references a particular Chronicle sheet that the player might have earned, even if her PC did not. Having this Chronicle sheet on hand can influence a minor element of the adventure, and there are alternative means to accomplish that feature.

That's a side effect of our production schedule and differing time zones. As always, we're striving to get a quality adventure into GMs' hands in a timely fashion, and the last Wednesday of each month is our target for…9 months out of each year (conventions actually push up the June–August schedule).

The Chronicle sheet has a boon that explains in broad terms how the PC earned it, and this should provide a basis for the GM to provide roleplaying context in addition to the mechanical benefit presented in #6–05. It is not essential to have read or played #5–03 to implement the feature, yet knowing more can't hurt.

Not sure if Paizo ever does re-prints of Scenarios, but there is a typo on page 3: "She magically the spell back to its source...". Presumably the word "tracked" or something similar is missing.

A grief I have on this, is with the treatment of slavery.

It's OK for the rich to own slaves. In fact, we should help them be compensated for getting a 'bad' slave.
It's OK to be the middle man and negotiate a good price. We can intimidate them for a better price, but not beat them up.
It's BAD to be the people capturing and selling them. Those people we can beat up and kill.

Because slavery will only end if we stop all the people from capturing and selling them.
NOT IF WE STOP BUYING THEM.

This is the flawed morality that allowed slavery to persist for so long.
Speaking of that, when are we going to get a season where Liberty's Edge and Silver Crusade finally get to end slavery?
I'm getting tired of explaining that slavery is OK in Pathfinder.
