Mine actually isn't, didn't think about it as the special ability "trapfinding", was just thinking of a normal perception check to look for traps as we move forward. Oops.

It's ok, despite the name "trapfinding" it mostly exists for disarming traps, not finding them...I mean it gives a bonus, but no trap requires you to have trapfinding to find it, unlike magical traps in 3.5 I believe.

I'm not sure if we have enough time to clear everything, but that's kind of why I suggest at least opening all the doors down both hallways to see what's inside them before spending a ton of time searching the rooms. Let's look at the big picture of the whole library before we get caught up in all the small details of each room.

Splitting up is an option. I explained the rules in Discussion, I think, and it explains that small rooms take 30 minutes to search for one person, and halves the duration for each extra participant. But only 4 persons can search a small room at once, so the other two have to come up with something else productive to do, e.g. search another room.

Your hourglass shows that almost half of an hour has passed.

Looking at the group, Tinker thought for a moment, "Lets split up, three to a room so was can search quicker and not get in each others way. Draven, Henrikuaxian, and Gillie, take the room to the South end, Makras, Brock and I will take this room. When you are finished, take the next door north of there and we will take the next one south of this one. If there is a problem, send someone. he said.

Like a cat with a furball, Makras spends several seconds trying to cough up a wet glob of . . . something . . . from this throat.

I like the plan, and appreciate decisive leadership.

I figured to separate these two parties into their own spoiler tags. Those who wish to remain 'immersive' might want to keep a small veil of mystery.

Darven, Henrikuaxian, Gillie:

The southern most door opens into a small room. These small and simple quarters are sparsely decorated with only simple furniture and a stoic portrait of Grand Prince Stavian III. A brass plaque on the frame of the portrait read, "In the end, loyalty is its own reward."

The room's tidy, but there are still a few signs of daily wear and use such as a small tray bearing the remains of a meal on the desk. The few possessions here are of little value.

And someone happens to be here! An older lady with a traditional taldan folk dress sits by the bed, and a red cloth blindfold is tied over her eyes. "Greetings," she says immediately as the door opens, "it's peculiar for anyone to be down here during a grand play. Who are you and why are you here?" Her tone of voice is polite and non-threatening.

This room doesn't appear to have any bookshelves, and thus is not a searchable room. Also, portrait is in Google Slides.

Darven/Henrikuaxian/Gillie Perception DC 15:

The woman appears to have four keys on a keychain on her belt. She is unarmed.

Tinker, Bocke, Markas:

Cabinets with two tall drawers each line the north and south walls of this room. A relief carving of a lion’s head dominates the south wall, hanging imperiously over a low stone step. The step has four shallow, cylindrical recesses.

Six freestanding statuettes of lions in various poses stand atop the furniture. One crouches as if preparing to ambush its prey. The second is roaring as it leaps at prey. The third wears a yoke that is chained to a large block that the lion strains to pull. The fourth wears a tiny pair of spectacles and reads from an ornate scroll. The fifth is draped in the flag of Taldor. And the sixth sits erect and wears a crown.

This is a medium sized room. Searching it will take 60 minutes, halved for each extra searcher.

Tinker/Bocke/Markas Perception DC 15:

There'a secret door behind the lion carving. The stone step functions as a combination lock, but rather than locking or unlocking the secret door, it seems ready to trigger some other device should someone open the door without disarming it.

And finally, the map has been updated.

Perhaps you could be of some assistance. One librarian to another?"

"These" referring to materials we might be looking for.

I don't have much to add until the caretaker responds, but this might be one of the few scenarios where splitting up is almost necessary to cover the amount of ground we need to cover in the minimal amount of time we have. Subtlety? Never heard of it.

"My name is Iliyana Baslee," she answers to Gillie, instinctively turning her head towards him.

The caretaker shakes her head at Darven. "As much as I appreciate your fondness of knowledge, even you should notice the blindfold I wear," she points at her eyes, "specifically disallowing me from reading. I have no knowledge of what the books hold. I guide students and explain what each room does. Which brings me to another point... since you don't claim to be lion blades, you must be trespassers. Why should I not scream for guards?"

You are about to answer, but a roar emanates throughout the hallways from the north. Iliyana sighs deeply, but doesn't appear to be alarmed herself.

North room TBM:
Just as Tinker is getting the combination lock disarmed, he makes the tiniest error which results in the lock go haywire. The instant he knows it went poorly, two ghostly lions emerge from two statues, and a third, bigger ghostly lion, pushes open the secret door and roars at the intruders.

GM, if I'm allowed to ask questions, I guess something about DR or defenses.

Tinker's info:
All foo creatures have the following effects:

  • Paired Protectors: When two or more foo creatures are within 30 feet of one another, they both gain the benefit of a protection from evil spell. The caster level of this protection from evil effect is equal to the highest Hit Dice of the affected foo creatures. This effect can be dispelled, but if it is, a foo creature can reactivate it as a swift action.
  • Stony defense: A number of times per day equal to its Hit Dice, a foo creature can harden its skin to unyielding stone as an immediate action. It gains hardness 8 until the end of its next turn, but its speed is reduced by 10 feet for the same duration.

The foo dog's worst save is Will save at a +3 bonus.

Makras' info:
All foo creatures have DR 5/bludgeoning and are immune to poison, disease, paralysis, and sleep effects.

Makras is quick to act, and swings his pickaxe at the odd creature (magenta). It's strike hits true, albeit the wound isn't as big as it should be. That creature's skin is tough!

Sorry, Henrikuaxian, I totally screwed up the boldening! Also, I noticed Tinker didn't really act on his turn, so I'll bot and have him draw an item of his choice, do Total Defense in addition, and take a 5ft step back towards others.

All foo creatures have DR 5/bludgeoning and are immune to poison, disease, paralysis, and sleep effects. But you already knew that due to Makras, so you get the save bonuses for the foo dogs: Fortitude +6, Reflex +5, Will +3.

Their only "weakness" is the lack of high armor class. Foo dogs have AC 15, foo lions AC 17.

The rest of the team rushes towards the northern room to help their colleagues.

Bocke's aura reaches all but Darven, who was caught up talking with the caretaker when the fight broke out.

The largest of the lions speaks with a rather similar voice that of the Guardian. "We are called upon to protect from intruders. And it is what we have promised to do. You cannot sway our oath."

The small lions don't bother to move from their positions and attack Makras and Tinker with their maws.

Cyan lion, bite @ Tinker: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 111d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Magenta lion, bite @ Makras: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 61d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Their lousy attempts are easily thwarted by the experienced pathfinders. The larger lion huffs and puffs, and attempts to make minced meat out of Tinker.

Pride, bite @ Tinker: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 221d8 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Pride, claw @ Tinker: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 221d4 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

Makras continues struggling with the strange beasts!

GM, I got forgot about my oracle curse--I should be staggered in the first round of every combat and instead I did two actions. To make up for it, I'll pass my turn this round.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

@Makras, I'll be lenient and rule that you were going about with your pickaxe already drawn. It's not like anyone was there to judge you about it.

Looking annoyed that his pick didn't penetrate quite as deep as it should have, Makras reaches out to touch the wound, his hand glowing with magical energy!

Casting inflict light wounds (DC 13 Will save for half damage if the touch attack hits). Casting will provoke an AoO (AC 22 including deflection aura).

Is there anything else to know about them other than what has already been revealed in above spoilers? Also, you mentioned in the initial description that they were "ghostly" lions, is that artistic license, or are they incorporeal? Going to hold off on using my standard action until I hear back from that, as it will make a difference in what I do.

Henrikuaxian's info:
Artistic, they are not incorporeal. You get to know a lot more: The bigger lion also has pounce and rake, and grapples with its bite attack. The smaller foo "dogs" just trip their enemies. All foo creatures can freeze into place and imitate statues.

The little gnome reaches into his spell component pouch and pulls forth a tiny little shovel. "Hmm, we're in this rather deep, seems like they should be as well." With a few arcane words and a tap of the shovel, arcane energy flows out of Henrikuaxian and creates a deep pit right underneath the large lion.

Casting Create Pit, directly centered under the lion, DC 16 Reflex save or he falls in, 20' deep. Everyone adjacent to it (currently the two dogs and Tinker), if they are still in their current spots at the end of their next turn, must make the same save with a +2 bonus or fall in.

I am curious - per the spell, if you make the save, you jump to safety in the nearest open space; however, the large lion does not have any safe spaces in this small room. If he makes his save, where would he go? Hopefully I don't see that happen right now, and this gets answered as a hypothetical...

Just as Bocke's arrows are about to hit the lion, in a blink of an eye the creature turns into stone, deflecting most of the power off. Fortunate for Bocke, his arrows still make dents into the hardened creature. As an immediate action it used Stony Defense, gaining hardness 8.

Magenta bite @ Makras: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

Makras waves his hand so the lion tries to bite it. The creature is unsuccessful, and is blasted by the dwarf's harmful magic.
Magenta will save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Though it seems to not work as well as hoped.

Red reflex save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
The lion is able to escape the sudden pit forming under it, essentially ruining the room's function. The desk falls right in. The lion is now balancing in the corner. The creature is now squeezing, and takes -4 to attack rolls and AC.

Botting Tinker
Tinker figures his position in the front line with a gaping hole in front of him is not favorable. And knowing the creatures are resistant to his weapons, he has very little options to be useful, but he can try. He does have a sense of a strategist in him, and takes just a small step diagonally to prevent the (blue) lion from escaping the pit.
5ft-step and draw rapier (move), study the blue lion (move).

The lions make bold strides to avoid falling into the pit. They try to go around the pathfinders to not fall into the pit. Bocke, Gillie, Tinker and Makras all get attacks of opportunities. Please detail whom you attack and how. Bocke has the option of only attacking magenta. Provided you have weapons drawn.

Once positioned behind the pathfinders, they try to make a meal out of Bocke, whose arrows really hurt!

Blue bite @ Bocke: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 131d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Magenta bite @ Bocke: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 101d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

But they sure can't even touch the elusive inquisitor!

The big lion tries to step carefully around the pit. Unable to charge, it just comes up to Makras, and bites.
Red bite @ Makras: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 141d8 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
It barely touches Makras' armor, and is easily deflected away.
Red reflex w/ +2: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 7 + 2 = 15
And as fate would have it, the poor lion has bad footing and falls into the pit.
Red falling damage: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 5) = 6
Now prone on the bottom of the pit, it curses, loudly, in Celestial. It sounds heavenly.

Not having a good time of things, Tinker stabbed at the lion, only to see if fall into the pit. "Pity" he said before adding something in a language that sounded like what the Lion was saying.

Celestial:
[b]You kiss your mother with that mouth? Shame!

Stepping over, he tried to stab at the creature.

"Gillie, Makras, step to the side. The rest of you, push them into the pit while we have a chance." he said.
