EPIC Bestiary Box please

4/5

I'm a huge fan of the Pathfinder Pawns. I love the detail of the pics well above my collection of 500+ mix of D&D, Pathfinder & Heroscape plastic miniatures. I even have 2 boxes of the 1st and 4th Bestiary Boxes and 1 of ever other Pathfinder Pawns set. In other words, I'm a convert.

I simply ask for the following:

1) Lighten the print color so the pics are a little easier to see.
2) Make an Epic Bestiary Box with the gargantuan and colossal sizes missing in the current Bestiary Boxes... (I'm begging on this one.)

Loves these pawns.... but

5/5

I really like these pawns from the DM perspective, because of how great they are at filling out the battle map with out a whole lot of "No, the nickels are the orcs, the penny is the guy we are trying to save."
More than the other Bestiaires though this one hurts from not having the pawns bigger than huge I really hope that Paizo will put out a Pawn set with gargantuan and colossal monsters one day so my players can start fearing the great old one instead of Can-o-Hamthulhu.

I'd give this one a 4.8 out of 5. Best bestiary pawns yet.

5/5

Just my opinion, of course, but I believe this bestiary is the best of the four bestiary pawn collections. The variety is strong, the artwork phenomenal, and for the most part, Paizo got the scale of the creatures correct this time.

On that note, sometimes, for the sake of including all the artwork, Pathfinder gets a few scales of the creatures wrong. I see that they are getting much better at making most of the creatures around the same scale - although I wish the Wyvaran was a bit bigger (Adlet was the glaring faulty scale on the last box). Shore up a few of these components and Pathfinder is looking at near-perfection. Perhaps including one more size between medium and large would be a good way of dealing with this occasional problem?

The occasional off-scale would be the only fault I have in this box. The creatures are as varied as ever, and I personally believe the artwork is improving on the bestiaries, which is saying a lot considering the artwork on the previous three bestiaries has been outstanding.

If you're looking for a good mixture of characters to add to your rpg campaigns, bestiary 4 is pretty solid and I'd recommend it to gamers who enjoy the artwork and the variety of creatures. I've got say, you did a great job on this one, Paizo. I'll be back for more if the quality remains this high. :)

* box also comes with 20 medium bases; 5 huge bases; and 10 large bases.

Cthulu Pawn!

Liberty's Edge

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Cthulhu is nobody's pawn....

Since he's colossal I think the chances of getting a Cthulu pawn in this are unlikely if the past Bestiary Boxes are anything to go by unfortunately.

What are those new monsters??? Green Women? Strange tentacle monster?

Wooo! Green women...

Um... I mean does anybody happen to remember the link to the Bestiary 4 content list that was posted on the blog some time back? It wold be nice to scan over that to try to figure out what we're looking at in this demo pic. ^_^

Creatures I hope getting new Artwork in this one:

Spring-heeled Jack and Graeae are the worst of the lot, can't see what's going on in the graeae one.

Some of these are not bad but i'm curious about more art for them, such as Seps, Zomok, Incutilis and some others.

Abaia / Colour out of Space / Death Dog / Dorvae / Mist Drake / Fachen / Fossegrim / Gaki / Gashadokuro / Blood Golem / GREAEA / Immortal Ichor / Incutilis / Jinmenju / Werecrocodile / Nependis / Nycar / Phantom Armor / Pooka / Rokurokubi / Killer Seahorse / Selkie / Seps / Snallygaster / Spring-Heeled Jack / Tiberolith / Emperor Walrus / Zomok

BTW, extremely many of the monsters in this book are tiny+smaller and Gargantuan+bigger...

Does that mean that this set will get Gargantuan/Colossal Tiny/Smaller pawns as well?

Paizo, please include these pawns in this set with same artwork...

- Cernunnos ** (this is probably coolest concept - a must).
- Erlking
- Gathlain
- Kitsune
- Nagaji
- Svartalfar
- Trox
- Wikkiwak (best bugbear art I've seen).
- Wyvaran

Bestiary 3 is probably the bestiary I've most looked forward to. I'll bribe the designer if they include a Rabbit Prince. ;) I know it's technically not a "monster", but I'm unsure where you guys would fit it in otherwise.

Scarab Sages

Since I'm not sure where else to post this, I'll ask here...

By far my only real complaint with the Pawns boxes is that there are not enough of certain monsters. Specifically, I run into this with the various humanoid races. Three is rarely enough.

Would it be viable to either have a box of races, or a series of one off sheets for, say, Orcs, Gnolls, Goblins, Hobgoblins, Kobolds, Skeletons, Zombies, etc.

I could definitely use more kobolds of different colors. Right now it seems our best bet is to hope that various common races feature prominently in future APs. Like goblins did in the Runelords set.

What I would really like to see is more PC/NPC pawns. Especially for underrepresented groups like brown/black people and female dwarves. Come on Advanced NPC Codex and matching pawns set! >.<

Perhaps instead, we'll get an actual colossal mini of Cthulhu...

Sure I'd like to see it too, but I don't think a Colossal sized pawn could fit in the packaging that Paizo is using now for the Adventure Paths or for the Box Sets.

Think about the Colossal sized Red Dragon miniature that Wizards of the Coast put out, but I think that is just too big for a single cardboard sheet that Paizo is using now.

Perhaps a Gargantuan 10 Pack, with a single figure on each sheet and one or two Gargantuan bases would be a better gradual the next step.

Even then, I'd like to see Paizo do something similar to what Steve Jackson Games did with Ogre Designer Edition. In ODE the made the Ogre a 3D Pawn and included Flat Ogres as well. Having a Gargantuan Dragon or Cthulhu pawn that that fits in the bases like all the rest of the line and then having a 3-D Type Pawn would be cool.

While there is art already existing for a Gargantuan and even Colossal Pawn, a 3-D version is the challenge both in design and cost.

Will this be available for pickup at Paizo con?

I completely agree!! It would be fantastic to have a sheet of goblins (maybe even including the funny ones like the one in the dragon/kobold costume) or undead! I have a weird thing for taking on hordes...

I have been ordering the PDF versions....but here is my problem, where can I get the card stock thick enough to go in the stands? I have been getting creative, but if anyone knows where or what kind of cardstock I should be looking for, my printer can feed a pretty good size thickness.

Your best bet is to print it on a regular piece of paper (or 90# index stock), and glue it to some bookbinding chipboard. You could also print it on sticker paper and save yourself the gluing step. :D

Thanks for the list! And which of those have new artwork?

I noticed new artwork for the necrocraft, the broken soul lillend, lava drake, river giant, and Manitou. I'm fairly certain those were new pieces, but I based it on memory (I've gone through bestiary 4 about 10 times). There might have been a few more that I overlooked but it's mostly the same artwork, which I'm personally very happy with.

Thanks for the quick answer!

But can you check the following monsters for new artwork? These are the ones I thought could use some new artwork.

25. Incutilis (2)
32. Nycar
34. Pooka
36. Rat King (2)

Thanks for the list! And which of those have new artwork?

Sorry, I had work to get done yesterday and didn't have time to go through and compare.

I know the Snallygaster didn't get new art, which is the one I was hoping for (since I wrote it). I want to see a piece with those mouth-tentacles!

I think Abaia also gets new art, as the artwork is very wide in the book, doesn't suit a tile.

I really need a artwork of a Colour out of space without the well in it, a Nependis without a tree will do as well.

Springheel Jack is gothic-artwork which i'm not a fan of, hoping on new art.

Graeae and Dorvae are chaotic artworks, i'd expect them to have new artwork, as I really don't know what's going on in their artworks.

Incutilus has two size variants, so that probably means two different artworks (at least I may hope so!)

Immortal Ichor is another one I expect to see new artwork from, I mean that wide thing would never fit on a tile and its a silly monster in that artwork, it can't do anything to attack.

Fossegrim I just want multiple artworks off.

Blood Golems and Mud Lords look too much alike, I hope to see another type of blood golem in the artwork so they aren't just different colored versions of eachother.

And Rokurokubi in action would be sweet, don't like the tea-party.

Werecrocodile art makes me think of stand-up comedians and not about something scary and feral.

Would kill for another Mist Drake artwork.

Only 3 Mi-Go? That won't due, I need at least 9 of them for an "Invasion" if I recall correctly.... But I don't think my players wish to encounter any more Mi-Go after the first one that was wearing the skin of some bald guy in a wheelchair named Baron Xavier von Braun

The immortal ichor's Bestiary art is perfect if you're hip to the piece of pop culture it's referencing (I had totally forgotten about it until I started flipping through the Bestiary, and it made me so happy to stumble across it), but I agree, it wouldn't make for a great pawn. You'll be happy to know it got new art!

Here's the list I came up with after flipping through B4 and comparing it to the B$ Pawns pdf. These are the pawns with art that is either not present or not the same in the Bestiary, I make no promises as to whether the art is entirely new or not.

Spoiler:
Alpluachra
Broken Soul Lillend
Death Dog
Dinosaur, Dimorphodon
Dinosaur, Velociraptor (Same art, but front dinosaur only, background and second dinosaur removed)
Outer Dragon, Lunar
Outer Dragon, Solar
Outer Dragon, Time
Outer Dragon, Void
Outer Dragon, Vortex
Drake, Lava
Drake, Mist
Drake, Shadow
Dorvae
Familiar, Archaeopteryx
Familiar, Dodo
Familiar, Platypus
Familiar, Sloth
Familiar, Tuatara
Flea, Giant
Flea, Mammoth
Fleshwarp, Halsora
Giant, River
Immortal Ichor
Incutilis
Living Topiary
Locust, Giant
Lurking Ray, Executioner's Hood
Lurking Ray, Trapper
Necrocraft
Nependis
Shark, Bull
Tortoise, Giant
Walrus
Water Strider Nymph (Same art, but recolored, and without the background.)

Everything else looked the same to me.

Abaia? How can that thing have the same art? It never suits on the pawn?

Graeae? That thing is horrible, I can't even see what it is suppose to be...

Spring-Heeled Jack, in my opinion the least art in the book, but still no new artwork...

Wish at least these 3 have new artwork...

Alp-Luachra was pretty cool already, and the lillend shouldn't have gotten new art at all, it was perfect...

Dorvea, Immortal Ichor, Incutilus, Nependis and Mist Drake are good news!

The lillend art is very similar to the B4 art, the pose is just a better fit for a pawn (more upright, as opposed to the diagonal form of the B4 picture)

I know this has been brought up before, but PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE release a Colossal/Gargantuan pawn set of the Bestiaries 1-4, I will pay good money for that. I know I can put a teddy bear on the board and use my imagination, but I want pawns of all the awesome iconic monsters especially now that Cthulu is a possibility, it is kind of dumb looking when you have accurate representations of minor monsters, but all the really awesome ones are left out. Thanks in advance Paizo.

I'm still debating on wether or not to get this. I have every pawn set up to this one but I dunno. I mostly have been getting the AP sets for the pawns that can be used as NPCs. This box won't have any of those however. Bestiary 1 covers about 90% of the monsters I regularly use, Bestiary 2 about 9%, and Bestiary 3 about .9%. There's a few things I might use once in awhile in 4 but is it really going to be worth it for stuff I'll use about .09% of the time? *shrugs*

Bestiary 1 definitely sees the most use -- enough so that I have two copies -- but pawns are a really good value. I'll pick these up eventually.

What I'd really like to see is a pawn set for the Monster Codex once it comes out. That would see so much more use. *crosses fingers*

Probably dependent on how well bestiary 4 and Inner Sea pawn sales go.

I'm fairly certain pawns are still selling well for Paizo (any sales associate care to confirm this assumption?) but even if they're not, I hope Paizo extends the pawn output until at least the Monster Codex pawns come out.

Again, I think Monster Codex is primed for some solid sales.

Sweet!

Liberty's Edge

There is a numbering error above. Rat King through Wyrwood should be 36 through 46.
