GM Abraham |
Anen, so have you finished your movement for this round or are you still waiting on a reply from Caduceus? In other words, is your map position correct for the end of your turn?
Caduceus Via |
After releasing a burst of healing energy, he points across the field toward Hector. "To the Flame of Liberty."
So, next round, I want to do a Paly channel BEFORE we slide to the south. That should hopefully top off Anen, bring Tytus into the 20's and kill off CYAN before we dip. I will roll next round.
anen tyln |
It took a double move for me to get to Caduceus, so that will be the end of my turn.
Tytus Umbraeyes |
Tytus steps forward and observes the green elemental before giving him the peoples ball.

The Pink ettin continues walking towards the cave entrance as its two heads argue over which of them will be the monarch and which will be the chief minister.

The last surviving wolf, Pink, confused and seeing its dead littermates everywhere it turns, charges at Caduceus with a mad howl!

Heccan, still floating 20' up in the air, finally returns to view as his Greater Invisibility wears off. (Heccan, I just noticed that you are levitating rather than flying - this means you have no way of moving horizontally - just up and down via levitate. Unless you've got some sort of trick up your sleeve (Gust of Wind?) you'll need to descend to the surface if you want to move.)
Heccan is up!

Heccan lowers himself to the ground and begins to walk to the south, seemingly unaware that he is no longer invisible. Whether or not he will regret this remains to be seen.
The Purple elemental remains out of view. Perhaps it has abandoned the fight?

And then, just as the pathfinders are seemingly on the verge of victory... six more foes burst out of the cave! They are tall creatures, with rough, green hides. Their hands end in claws, and their bestial faces have a hideous, tusked underbite.

Anen also recalls that trolls have a power of regeneration that is only stopped by acid or fire. They have no special resistances or immunities. He also recalls that Fort is their strongest save and Will their weakest. I can't figure out what's happening with the knowledge check chart. I made a copy and swapped out the link and it seemed to work fine, but then I clicked it again and sometimes it works and sometimes I get an error. Some kind of google documents weirdness. Sigh.
Caduceus Via |
Caduceus casts a spell, hurling a portion of The Inheritor's purity among the circle of corrupted souls.
Burst of Radiance ~ This spell fills the area with a brilliant flash of shimmering light. Creatures in the area are blinded for 1d4 rounds, or dazzled for 1d4 rounds if they succeed at a Reflex save. Evil creatures in the area of the burst take 1d4 points of damage per caster level (max 5d4), whether they succeed at the Reflex save or not.

Yellow Hill Giant - 79 dmg; 50' down in pit (4d6/round Ref DC 25 for half, r19);
Red Troll - 78 dmg; blind (r14); fire;
Orange Troll - 66 dmg; dazzled (r16); fire;
Purple Troll - 86 dmg; fire; acid
Cyan Troll - dmg;
Brown Troll - 65 dmg; acid;
Black Troll - 91 dmg; fire;
Two the lantern archons hit the blind giant with their light rays, making his already awful day even worse.
Purple Reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Brown Reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
Anen blasts two of the trolls with acid and one of them goes down.
Hector drops the Red troll with his first attack, stabbing him right through the eye. Then he stabs the Brown troll for good measure.
Tytus bashes the black troll, who looks quite wobbly.
Purple Elemental Reflex: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (20) + 0 = 20
Black Reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Brown Reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Orange Reflex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Even though the Purple elemental's reflexes are blindingly fast for an earth elemental, Heccan's fireball still reduces him to a pile of melted stones. The three trolls he targeted also succumb to their wounds, perishing in the fiery blast.
Unless anyone objects, I will call this fight here. There is one troll still standing - as yet undamaged - and the blue giant is about to recover from glitterdust, but at this point, with no further reinforcements coming it's just a matter of grinding them down. And this battle has been going for two months of real time - I imagine that some of you might be ready to move on!
The last giant guard finally recovers his vision, quickly takes stock of what is happening on the battlefield, and throws down his greataxe in surrender. The lone troll, if left alone happily scampers away, delighted to be finally freed from his live of slavery in the giant camp. Here's how the module describes the trolls - I found it entertaining: Six troll slaves toil here stitching holes in the chief’s tent to prepare for when the tribe moves and he cannot enjoy the comforts of living in a cave. They hate this job and have no skill with such things, so when the PCs arrive, they joyously throw the tent down on the cave floor and leap into battle. Frankly, they’d rather fight a group of adventurers than face another moment of sewing.
Combat Over - Pathfinders are victorious!
By the way, that was four encounters strung together. Although it probably stretched on too long in real time (I hope no one got too bored), I'm pleased that the whole thing managed to achieve the sort of epic quality that should be there if a group of pathfinders invades a giant village. The four encounters left separate would have each been not just boringly easy, but kind of stupid.
Let me know when you are ready to proceed and we will move the action inside the cave.
Caduceus Via |
I will do some healing before we move on. I will roll in a bit.
Hector, The Flame of Liberty! |
Hector leans on this blade, trying to catch his breath.
More than happy to have it called!

"I don't know about you boys, but I'm near tapped out. Hopefully there ain't nothing too taxing remaining in the caves."
Caduceus Via |
The paladin takes quick assessment of his divine reserves. "Though the battle was long, The Inheritor is still with me. Much of what she granted me for this day remains."
Heccan Abraxi |
Heccan breaths a sigh of relief and wipes his brow. He rejoins his fellow agent. "So, now I can say I have been to a giant village. Once is enough I think."
Just so I read the combat clearly, we finished the encounter before Hec's fireball and use of select rod?
GM Abraham |
Just so I read the combat clearly, we finished the encounter before Hec's fireball and use of select rod?
No, those were both used (to deadly effect) but I wouldn't worry too much about it.
With the battle over, the pathfinders are able to take as much time as they need to heal themselves after their labors. The surviving members of the village cower away in terror, certain that their conquerors will undoubtedly treat them as they no doubt have treated many a hamlet on other more fortunate occasions.
When the pathfinders are ready to venture inside the cave they find the first chamber (H3 on updated map) to be a squalid workroom. It looks very much as though - until just a few moments ago - a group of six troll slaves with very poor hygiene were laboring on stitching and repairing holes in giant-sized tents. It does not appear that any love was lost on the labor.
Continuing further into the cavern, the pathfinders find two other chambers off to each side (H4 and H5 on the map). In the first: This small, unlit cave is empty except for a large chest of wood and iron, fitted with a hefty padlock. Painted sloppily on the wall behind it are a skull symbol in red and some crude writing.
The chamber across the corridor is a simple, little cave with a bed made of woven wooden strips and a pile of rags as a pillow. The walls are covered in crudely fashioned paintings, but the subject matter is strange and surprisingly complex, involving movements of the planets and the events that they seem to inspire. A large burlap sack lies on the floor.
Finally, at the end of the corridor, the cavern opens up further. A flickering pair of torches lights this cave. Furs and skins hang on the walls, and the skulls of beasts and humans are displayed like trophies. More furs lay across the floor, around a bed of still more furs piled high. In addition to the pink ettin that Heccan has charmed, two other giants stand in this cave. One, a hill giant, bears a large scar from a wound that appears to have torn away one of his ears long ago. He wears a short red cloak of some scaly hide, as well as a large glittering earring in his remaining ear. The other is thin by giant standards and wears a silver necklace covered in charms of moons and stars. Most remarkably, however, he has but one eye—he's a cyclops.
The hill giant, the cyclops, and the ettin all seem to be arguing with each other and pay little attention to the pathfinders' arrival.
Hector, The Flame of Liberty! |
Hector will get out his lock picks and take his time to open the lock on the chest Take 10 for a 25.
When they arrive at the argument, Hector looks to his fellows and whispers, "Seems like the setup to a bad joke: An ettin, a giant and a cyclops walk into a bar . . ."
Heccan Abraxi |
Heccan's nose wrinkles as they step into the chamber. "Codes and codicils! There should be a law against living in a place like this. The filth!" Stepping somewhat gingerly he follows the others.
He gets a wide grin on his face as he sees the ettin arguing with the two giants. [b]"I wonder if out two headed friend over there agrees he is ready for a promotion. Let's just say I may have offered a few words of encouragement. Shall we listen in on the debate?"
Heccan will see if he can get within earshot of the trio. Tongues should still be active so Hec can understand giant if they are conversing in that language.
GM Abraham |
Heccan can indeed understand everything that is being said (I'm not going to put anything in spoilers - just assume that Heccan translates for the rest of the group) and they are indeed arguing about who should rule the tribe, as well as what's to be done about the "invaders."
Just as a reminder for everyone: the reason you are here is because you are trying to befriend the giant wizard Zoarth so he will help unlock the secrets of a magical tome. When you went to his castle you found him under attack by hill giants who you have every reason to believe have come from here. Zoarth has no idea why they attacked him and has sent you to find out.
Caduceus Via |
"If they kill each other, we may not find out why they attacked the storm giant."
I will put this here in a spoiler if the team decides to try to talk to these guys.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (11) + 19 = 30
anen tyln |
"Oh, yeah, we should definitely try to talk this out. Don't like our chances of a peaceful resolution, mind you, but it's the thought that counts."
Anen slips back a little and draws his lesser silent metamagic rod in case things get lively.
Heccan Abraxi |
Heccan nods in agreement. "I quite agree, and I think my two headed friend may have given us an opportunity. If no one objects, I will attempt to open a parlay. I would appreciate a few others for a show of force, but perhaps we should have a few of us stay out of sight in case things go poorly. A sound plan, I believe."
Caduceus Via |
With a nod, Caduceus escorts the sorcerer forward.
If it can be done OUT OF SIGHT, I will cast Enhanced Diplomacy on Heccan BEFORE we approach. It offers a +2 Competence Bonus.
GM Abraham |
You can easily move backwards in the cavern to where your spellcasting will not attract any attention. So, consider it cast.
Anyone ready to engage with the giants? What do you say or do?
Hector, The Flame of Liberty! |
sounds like Heccan is on point. Let's get to the bottom of this attack on our erstwhile ally.
anen tyln |
Same here. If they speak common I can try to help out and aid, but I think this is Heccan's show at the moment.
Heccan Abraxi |
Heccan bows to the group and straightens up. He closes his eyes as Via casts a blessing to aid in the endeavor. He approaches the arguing group of giantkin. He speaks in giant. I won't post in spoiler as Heccan will whisper a translation to the group as he speaks.
"I see you have quite a dilemma. Perhaps I can be of assistance. I would speak to the chief of this village as I have business here. On behalf of the mighty Zorath!"
GM Abraham |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
They all look up at Heccan's entrance, somewhat startled by the interruption, but none react aggressively. Each of the ettin's two heads gaze fondly at the sorcerer and then nearly simultaneously begin to contradict each other: "Me Yillas and me chief of village - a heavenly voice told me so!" "No! How many times I gotta 'splain? You gonna be first minister - heavenly voice made me chief! Also, me Yillas!"
The hill giant who had been fiercely arguing with both ettin heads just moments ago has a crafty look cross his face at Heccan's arrival and then: "Um, yeah. Yeah! They chiefs! They both chiefs! Me just lowly servant - Grunf me name - an' this - " he gestures to the cyclops - "this me even lowlier servant Ramma. We jes' here pleadin' for them chiefs - " he gestures to the ettin - "for chiefs to defend us village honor from the invaders. They jes' tellin' us they kin destroy invaders single handlike 'n they gonna challenge 'em to duel 'n we 'sposed t' watch 'n not help 'n jes watch from a safe far distance, very far. We tellin' them it too danger on account o' how powerful youse invaders iz but them chiefs sure am mighty brave so what we gonna do? Youse ready fer yer duel? We gonna watch from a safe far distance on account o' hill giant code: fair fight best fight!"
The ettin's two heads listen to this speech with expressions of utter bafflement, as if they had just been asked to read Machiavelli in the original Italian.
Heccan Abraxi |
Heccan folds his hands in front of him and quirks a brow. "Now then mighty chief," the Chelaxian looks to the charmed ettin "war is not the only answer. First we need answers, as to why this tribe makes war upon mighty Zorath. Second, I urge the tribe to make peace with Zorath so that we may all live in peace. What say you, mighty chief"
Heccan smiles at the charmed ettin.
Diplomacy + Enhanced Diplomacy: 1d20 + 34 ⇒ (8) + 34 = 42
GM Abraham |
The ettin's two heads appear delighted that their claims on the chieftainship are being acknowledged, so delighted that they momentarily forget to argue with each other, and they both smile so broadly at Heccan that he is nearly bowled over by the stench of their unwashed teeth.
Yillas replies, "I say YES! Let us all live in peace! We will make peace with the Zorathians. Why this endless war?!?"
Yillas interrupts, "Some say we have always been at war with Zorathia but they are wrong! Zorathia is our ally in our endless war against the Republic of Zorth! We have always been at war with the Republic of Zorth!"
Yillas, annoyed at having been interrupted, snarls, "Do not - DO NOT - interrupt your chief! Never -"
Yillas gasps with disbelief, "Again with this?!? You are first minister, though not for long with this impudence! Don't think I won't have you executed for treason!"
With that, the two heads begin to twist and bite at each other, head butting and tearing flesh from each other's ears!
Note that everything above was said with the vocabulary and style of a mentally challenged 4th grader - I leave that to your imagination.
Heccan Abraxi |
*claps* Bravo
Heccan smirks as the ettin argues with itself. He casts his gaze on the other giants and speask while holding their gaze "What about your loyal followers Yillas? Do they desire peace as well?"
