No Game Master can ever have too many colorful characters to throw at her players, whether they’re friendly allies or devious enemies. The Inner Sea NPC Codex presents over 50 unique NPCs from the Pathfinder campaign setting, allowing GMs to focus on the story they want to tell and not the statistics for the assassins, cultists, cabalists, and other characters their players may meet along the way. Each entry provides not only all the mechanics needed to run the character in both combat or social encounters, but also an overview of how that character fits into the world of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.

Among the nearly five dozen characters in this book, ready for Game Masters to drop into campaigns whenever they’re needed, you’ll find the following:

  • Knights: From the valiant Knights of Ozem to the chaos-smiting Hellknights and the regimented soldiers of Molthune’s army, this book contains no shortage of knights and soldiers for any war-torn campaign.
  • Jacks-of-All-Trades: From Aspis Consortium spies to Pathfinder chroniclers to Sleepless detectives, the skilled characters found within can serve equally well as allies or enemies, depending on the GM’s needs.
  • Mystics: While the goodly Magaambya arcanists stand in opposition to the sinister Blood Lords of Geb and the druids of Uskwood, all three mystical spellcasters, as well as many more from a variety of traditions, can be found together in these pages.
  • Scoundrels: Whether it’s an assassin from the mysterious Anaphexia or the murder-cult known as the Red Mantis, or a fanatical agent of the Infernal House of Thrune, find the right hoodlum for your game here.

Praise the Sun for another great book

5/5

This book offers a wealth of great Npcs that can and will be put to great use for enemies such as The belkzin warchief guy, or the knight of Ozem. All great stuff, some of them are cut short in the description due to page length but overall not a big enough deal to care. 5/5

Great Golarion Resource

5/5

I honestly wasn't sure that I needed another book of NPCs, but this might even get more use than my NPC Codex. It does a fantastic job of highlighting peoples and places from all around the Inner Sea. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of Golarion specific NPCs that I can put to quick use.

About a third are CR 10 or higher which are of less use to me as I don't often run much above 10th level, but that's a personal preference. Many prestige classes are put to good use and an appendix at the back helpfully provides the non-core abilities and details. The descriptions are full of nice little details about Inner Sea cultures and lands.

5/5

Read my full review on Of Dice and Pen.

The Inner Sea NPC Codex is a magnificent work and makes a worthy setting-specific companion to the NPC Codex. I strongly suspect it will start to see a lot of use in my games in the future.

OK, sell me on the difference between this and the previous NPC Codex.

Dark Archive

Well think these are actual red mantis, Hellknights etc (As in the prestige classes.)

Very cool! Rogues Galleries are always useful to me, and a Golarion specific one could be great. Will it use only standars classes, or will some have prestige classes (especially those found in the Paths of Prestige?

The NPC Codex, as part of the Core Rulebook line, is setting-neutral for the most part (yeah, we mention a few deities...). This product is part of the Campaign Setting line, and so features characters tied striongly to Golarion.

Sovereign Court

Was hoping for a full blown hardcover campaign setting specific NPC codex (with subsequent pawns). I'll take another NPC softcover though. Any sword lords or shoanti in this?

Grand Lodge

Ooh, will we get a pawn book for this one? Even if it's smaller, like the AP Pawn size... ^_^

Now that I would enjoy seeing, especially if they have just one character with the Aldori Swordlord PrC.

Duh, my bad! I didn't mean the hardcover NPC Codex, I meant the previous softcover NPC book, the NPC Guide.

Not sure if I will be interested in this one, though if it was the Mythic NPC Codex that would be a lot more interesting.

Dark Archive

so, how many NPCs are we talking about? 30?

chopswil wrote:

Much more. 2 per page for low level NPCs, 1 page for higher level NPCs, * 60 pages (more or less).

Maybe 90 if half are low level NPCs and the other half is high level NPCs.

I for one like this kinda of thing. These are always helpful.

Now are there going to be named NPCs with backgrounds and such...or are they going to be more generic?

Either way it will be useful...but geting NPCs backgrounds give us a glimpse of the world.

Yeah, good question. What's the difference? Is it more of the same or is there some different approach?

A number greater than that.

What's the difference between this book and NPC Guide?

This book is formatted like NPC Codex or a Bestiary—one NPC per page (or 1 on a spread for a few of the more complex NPCs), and they all have art, and they're from a MUCH wider range of CR scores (from CR 1 up to CR 17, although that range may change). Furthermore, all of the NPCs in this book are non-specific characters. They don't have names. They're presented in the same way we do NPCs in the backs of books like Magnimar: City of Monuments or Lands of the Linnorm Kings.

So between 40-60 generic NCPs.

This has my attention.

Oh, I'm buyin' this one! NPC Codex has been far and away the most useful book I've bought. The more the merrier!

Will there be a pawn set that goes along with this? It's nice to have something to put on the table to go along with the stats. Also I'm just a pawn addict. >.<

I'd also like to see a pawn set for this. Any chance we might see a Golarion NPC Codex with named characters from the comics and novels eventually?

*How* strongly?

I like the NPC Codex enough to buy a second one for more options, but can I use it if I don't own any of the Golarion crunch?

How many of the NPCs presented require you to own Golarion crunch and how many can I use with just the setting-neutral rulebooks like Core, APG et cetera? Can I only use 10% of the book? 50%? 90%?

How strongly do you need Golarion crunch?

I'm also curious why

I figure I'll point this out to you this NPC codex is specificaly made for Golarion...it will probably have alot of Golarion crunch in making the NPCs...this is not NPC Codex 2.

Hopefuly NPC codex 2 will come out next year sometime...(crossing my fingers and knocking on wood)

Well, that much is obvious. That's why I asked the question in the first place, so that I could determine whether this might be useful for me without the Golarion crunch, or if it's absolutely vital to use this book.

Liberty's Edge

For example -- I haven't done so yet, but I plan to pick up the Dragons Unleashed book, because even though it's Golarion-specific, I suspect the dragons detailed in it might be largely doable to drop into other worlds.

Sorry if I came off as abrasive. Just honestly curious.

Basically, this book presents character types drawn from our campaign setting: Aldori Swordlord, a variety of Hellknights, Razmiran Priest, Red Mantis Assassin, etc. Mechanically speaking, you should have little problem using anything in this book in your own campaign setting, but some of them may have flavor that you'll need to adjust a little or a lot to fit your own world.

Retooling the fluff is no problem whatsoever to me. Thanks for the clarification; I'll be getting this one.

Will this book feature 15 or less NPC's with the Winter Witch prestige class?

I for one love these types of products.

James, are any Venture Captains going to be stated up for the Inner Sea Codex? Are any of the Characters from the Novels going to get stated up I wold like to see Radovan, Varian and Operal in the codex.

Useful. Mix in the Gamemaster's Guide NPCs, the NPC Codex, and this book and I'd be set for NPCs for a LONG while.

Excellent cover art! By Jason Engle, yes?

Wow, that tavern looks packed with scary dudes. Do you have to at least have a prestige class for admittance? :P

Ooh, a Hellknight Signifer, a Razmiran priest, a Grey Gardener, a Goblin, a Harrower, some Aspis Consortium dude, an Arcane Trickster, a Pathfinder Chronicler, an adorable kitten about to get kicked across the room after startling a drunken Shoanti with a cowskull codpiece (that must chafe)...

That's some quality barfight, waiting to happen, right there.

My money is on it kicking off when the skulking Red Mantis assassin makes her move.

I'm hoping we get some mythic statblocks for a few of those important personages out there. Lord Gyr (Mythic Rogue, slotting into the Scoundrels), either Zutha or Belimarius (they fit nicely into Mystics at the top end, and aren't as far into Mythic as Sorshen or Xanderghul), and even some of the Ten Magic Warriors, huh, guys, huh, right, am I right or am I right?

Oh. And Blood Mistress Jakalyn, too.

Paizo Employee Developer

None of the statblocks in this book are for specific characters, but rather generic members of different Inner Sea archetypes, like Pathfinder Society Venture-Captain, Red Mantis Initiate, and Usij Cabalist. That said, just because we didn't stat up individual characters in this book doesn't mean we won't do a book full of named NPCs down the road. In fact, I think a book like that is very likely at some point, it's just not on the schedule yet.

Oh. Sad now.

Might there at least be a couple of mythic examples? Or will it be solely generic non-mythic stuff?

Does each character get there own piece of artwork?

This book contains no mythic content but does offer some NPCs with CRs in the high teens.
