A few comments from giving it a once over.
1) The Pregens are well done. While I am not sure if the intent was for the one page to be a quick print and use as a character sheet or not. It could be done, granted once the character levels would need a new sheet but still handy for running a 1st level one shot.
2) Hugo very nice art work. Your art has steadily been getting better over the years. I think this is the best art you have done to date.
3) The paper mini stand up's with Hugo's art is fantastic nice addition.

I must send tons of KUDOS! to Tim and his AMAZING work on the layout, it looks totally amazing and makes the B&W art stand "colored" in a really gothic style really beautifully.
Some kudos your way, too, my friend. That's some really AWESOME character art there. You really captured my vision for these hero writeups. Really well done.
Same goes for Tim. He's doing some "Legendary" layout for us and knocking it out of the park.

I checked out the art preview but it's only for seven characters. Is that first guy the male half-orc paladin? That's one pretty-boy half-orc if so. Is the alchemist the one that's missing?

Scroll down just a little farther down the page on that link and you will see Xiuj, the alchemist. :) As for the half-orc, Agrimar, he is very non-orc looking on purpose. Its part of his story. But the first guy in the art is NOT the half-orc. If you see the info in that link above the art, the characters are listed in order of the art below. So that first "pretty boy" is Jevalt. Agrimar, though, is still pretty "human looking" for a half-orc.

Yeah, great job by Hugo and Tim! Our goal is to make products that are special, and the art and layout are parts of that.
I have a question for people: how about the hyperlinks we put in. Did we over-do it? Would you have liked more things linked?
We want your feedback.
Clark
I think it is kinda hard to over do hyperlinks. I mean if you want to use them you can and if you don't want to you can ignore them. I noticed the hyperlinks of course. I especially like that they was a different color so easy to spot.

We wanted to hyperlink the right stuff. Goodness, people don't need a hyperlink to the initiative rule from the "Init" entry on the character sheet, or to Will saves. But we figured the new or interesting or unusual rules might need links.
So we were wondering, did we link enough stuff or not? More, less?

Neil Spicer Contributor, RPG Superstar 2009, RPG Superstar Judgernaut |

Agrimar is the fourth one over (i.e., the character in the middle) of that art preview image. He's also featured on the cover of the Gothic Heroes PDF. He's the PC on the far right. His "sister" (Ysabot) is the PC in the foreground, basically serving as our covergirl.
Also, in terms of Agrimar's inherent "orcishness"...he has the Pass For Human feat from the Advanced Player's Guide. As Clark mentioned, there are very specific story reasons for why I included that feat (e.g., orcs and half-orcs face some pretty steep prejudice in Ustalav). So, it's meant to help him succeed in the Carrion Crown AP...even though we don't call out these specific connections to Paizo's IP.

First off, let me say that I'm a huge fan of everything from Necromancer Games. I used so many locations from your games with my players, and now one of my players just took his game into his version of Bard's Gate. Still one of the best fantasy cities.
I was really happy with this product. I had a few questions though. I really like the idea of combining personal stories and goals with the main plots. Now the Gothic Adventure path this is based on is one I haven't read past the first part. I was wondering if any of the character backgrounds are going to come into play during the course of the adventure as written. Not that I'm against changing the story to better include character backgrounds, just wondering.
Will you continue to do this with past Adventure Paths or only the most recent ones? My idea from above seems only possible if you know exactly where the adventure is going.
I was wondering why you didn't create a mini for the Eidolon. The summoner really is two characters. Anyone who chooses this character will need a mini for Theodric as well.
And to answer your hyperlink question, I really like that you kept it to the abilities and concepts that many people might not know. I haven't noticed the need for any more. That said I doubt I would have gotten annoyed if you had hyperlinked just about everything. More information is always a good thing.
One suggestion that I think would really make this product even better. What do you think of a personalized character sheet? Something with an image and background sections filled in, but with blanks for AC, hit points, and so forth. As is, the character sheet on the pdf will be less useful once the characters hit second level.
I really like the characters you guys have come up with. They've made me want to take a look at the Carrion Crown again.
Thanks.

That would be neat. have a sheet with the image and all the stuff that would never changed filled in but the rest left blank to be filled in so it could be changed as they level.

Neil Spicer Contributor, RPG Superstar 2009, RPG Superstar Judgernaut |

...I was wondering if any of the character backgrounds are going to come into play during the course of the adventure as written. Not that I'm against changing the story to better include character backgrounds, just wondering.
I can answer this one. In short, yes. But not in the sense you might naturally assume just by reading their stories. It's unlikely, for instance, that anything involving the orc tribe in which Agrimar was raised would turn up again in the adventure path. However, as an undead scourge devoted to the Inheritor, he'll have ample opportunity to exorcise the demons of his past by putting the smack down on all sorts of necromancy-fueled undead creations.
Additionally, it's not as though Domminia's eidolon, Theodric, has a defined history that spans the actual Carrion Crown AP. But, that said, his involvement as a warrior who actually participated in the original Shining Crusade should present ample opportunities for a clever GM to introduce his side plot at various points in the campaign.
Same deal for a lot of the other character backgrounds. It's entirely possible that Ysabot's hag mother could find representation at a very specific juncture in the campaign. Jevalt Ardain's ancestry as a dhampir could easily get explored during Ashes at Dawn. And even Eilinica's dreams where they involve werewolves could get ramped up in Broken Moon.
The bottom line is that, while crafting these character concepts, I purposefully looked across each of the adventures in the Carrion Crown campaign to find ways of letting each of them have a moment to shine in terms of their own personal stories interwoven with the main plot of the AP. So, I think that gets at what you're asking about. But, if not, please elaborate and I'll ponder further on it.
Will you continue to do this with past Adventure Paths or only the most recent ones? My idea from above seems only possible if you know exactly where the adventure is going.
We have plans to examine plenty of the other APs. That includes the older ones as well as the new ones coming out. Depending on how the Pregens product line does will determine how much time we invest in creating similar character concepts for the other APs.
I was wondering why you didn't create a mini for the Eidolon. The summoner really is two characters. Anyone who chooses this character will need a mini for Theodric as well.
This is probably true for Ysabot's cat familiar, Persimmon, as well. The only problem is that both the eidolon and familiar were fully integrated into the character art of their respective PCs, so there really wasn't a good standalone image for them to place on a paper mini. That said, I think it's probably worth exploring as we move forward with this type of product. It makes sense if we're going to do the paper minis that we also include them for animal companions, familiars, and eidolons where we can. That's good feedback. Thank you for that...
One suggestion that I think would really make this product even better. What do you think of a personalized character sheet? Sounds like something we could discuss. I don't know how much more involved it would be to include something like that in the PDF at the same price point. Tim's got the layout mojo to pull it off. It just might warrant far more time and resources to do it than we can reasonably spare given everything else in the product pipeline. Once we see how this product does for us, we'll know more about how much we want to tweak it and continue it. But this is all great feedback.
I really like the characters you guys have come up with. They've made me want to take a look at the Carrion Crown again.
Well, honestly, that's the kind of reaction we were hoping for. And that'll be even more important as we go back and do these kinds of products for the earlier APs. If we can get folks to pull those adventures back off the shelf (either to finally run them or even re-run them), we'll have succeeded in our goal.
My two cents,
--Neil

Great looking product, but I do have one litle gripe: There are no good character shots.
What I mean is, that every shot of the characters has something covering it. The full page ones have the intro text boxes (and I really don't like the fact that the full page ones in the print friendly version still have the coloured background). If I wanted to use one of the characters, I'd like to have a plain version of their picture so that I could colour it (I have many, many of Hugo's pics that I've coloured on my Deviant Art page, I love his work) to better portray the character. As it is, all I get is a dark yellow version with text covering it, or a head shot.

Yeah, I saw that and it's cool, but other than the Alchemist it doesn't work when they al bleed into one another. I also realized that I can also get them from Hugo's DA Account... I had seen a couple there previously, but not having been back in a while I hadn't realized that he had them all up until I gave myself a forehead slap earlier and went looking (although they do have the DA logo splashed across them, which is kinda sucky for my purposes). :/

Out of curiosity, what are your purposes with regards to the character art? Are you going to colorize Hugo's renditions? If so, I'd be interested in seeing your end-result.
As for full-length character body shots, I think we can take that under advisement as additional feedback. The means are certainly there to make sure the "art" page for each PC keeps the figure clear of any overlaying graphics. And we can even tone down the background or remove it to make the art images easier to use. Or, alternatively, we could always make it a point to post up the art images at the LG site for folks to download.
I'm a little leery of a couple of things, though. One, the reason the DA logo is splashed across Hugo's work at the DA site is so he protects his copyright. Making all of those images available at the LG site might also be at cross-purposes with that goal. Clark wanted to get the images posted up at LG to give folks insight into the product's development as well as Hugo's awesome skill and attention to detail. I'd kind of like to see us put up only a few sample pieces of art rather than everything. And I'd prefer that we make clear versions of all the art available to those who buy the product by tweaking the "art" pages in the PDF.
But that's just my two cents,

I am EXTREMELY satisfied with this bundle of pre-gens. My only minor qualms were already brought up earlier in the thread (the eidolon/familiar minis and character sheets with blanks for use beyond level 1), but the lack of those things in no way diminished my enjoyment of this.
I can honestly say that after reading through each of the characters, there isn't a single one that I do not want to play. And while each of the characters is fun and interesting, I was most impressed with the inquisitor and the summoner (what a cool origin for an eidolon!).
Well done, guys!

While your question was more for flash, but since I would also like to see the full stand alone black and white art as well, I will give my reasons. There are two reason which are linked.
1) It is something I could print out and take to the game. If I am going to use them as a pregen for a quick game OR (and for me far more likely) use them as NPC's the PC's can hire. It would be really nice to have a full page B&W art I could print out and then show the players.2) When I run games I often do web pages. I just started a new game and soon will start on a web page. I already plan to introduce these characters as NPC's. So it would be great to be able to use the single B&W art there as well.
Of course I am not sure if number 2 is legal or not. I give credit to the artist and it is a non-profit page, but still not sure.

Clark Peterson Legendary Games, Necromancer Games |

Good ideas. In future pregen products we will make sure to do full page art pieces at the end, unadorned with anything. Just the art. For an electronic product that is easy to do. Had I known that was such a big demand item I would have done it here. I appreciate everyone's feedback. We want to make products you want. So knowing what you want really helps.
And the cool thing is that when we do future pregen products you all can point to that art and say "that is there because I asked for it!" I love how these forums permit the fans to participate in the products, it is really great to be able to do this.

Neil Spicer Contributor, RPG Superstar 2009, RPG Superstar Judgernaut |

...while each of the characters is fun and interesting, I was most impressed with the inquisitor and the summoner (what a cool origin for an eidolon!).
I'm thrilled to hear the pregen PCs were so well-received. That particular summoner/eidolon mix is a character concept I've had for awhile now, both as a PC I might want to play in a game someday and as the lead character in a shortstory idea I've been pondering.
The trouble with my dreams of writing fiction, however, are that I'm kept way too busy with everything else going on in my life. I'd have to set aside something else to focus on it. And I enjoy creating RPG-related material for Paizo and Legendary Games too much to stop. Once I figure out a way to squeeze another 8 hours out of each day, though...look out! ;-)
In the meantime, I can still give shape and form to some of my literary ideas by infusing them into character concepts and adventure outlines.

Thanks for all the responses....Never before have I felt like I could talk to a writer or artist. Between message boards, facebook, and Google+ there really is a new discourse going on. I really hope that this works out for you guys.
Thanks so much for your response and review. I'm always really grateful when folks pick up on the exact efforts I put into something. As your review cited, I had multiple design goals with all of these pregen PCs...
1) Inspiration - Even if a GM or his players aren't particularly interested in using pregen PCs and want to roll up their own, these character writeups should hopefully serve as some really awesome inspiration for ways to tweak their own character backgrounds to integrate them more fully with the campaign. But even beyond that, I wanted to make sure these characters stood well enough on their own that they could serve as inspiration for any game, not just a gothic-themed AP.
2) Reusability - Along those same lines, I wanted to make sure that even if individual players didn't see a use for this type of product, hopefully a GM could still find a place for these character concepts as NPCs to help round out their game. And I wanted them to be useful for that even if a GM chose to airlift them into an entirely different campaign. For instance, there's no reason the Tian alchemist from Gothic Heroes couldn't see immediate use in your Jade Regent campaign, as well. Same deal for the summoner and her eidolon if you want to drop them into a Worldwound campaign. With a couple of tweaks, the ranger could make an appearance in Kingmaker or Serpent's Skull. And so on...
3) Compatibility - I tend to approach character creation for RPGs much like I do for fiction. I'm looking to make sure they harmonize well. Each one has a role to play and I wanted to make sure all of these guys could leap off the page and fire up the imagination of anyone playing through the campaign. But they also needed to "fit" with one another. I call this the "credibility" meter. I'm looking for how likely it is...or how much sense it makes...for these particular PCs to come together and experience the underlying story of the AP. And, I want to make sure they each have their own hooks into why they play the roles that they're destined to...
4) Innovation - With the release of the Advanced Player's Guide, Ultimate Magic, and even the changeling that appears in the bestiary section of the Haunting of Harrowstone, I wanted to make sure I leveraged a lot of that cool stuff to give these PCs an extra layer of awesomeness. Sure, I could have easily made the summoner a human from Lastwall. But what if she was an aasimar instead? What if her eidolon didn't just appear because of her insight into the arcane mysteries. What if it was divinely-inspired as a direct result of her aasimar ancestry? Now that's cool. Same deal with including a changeling witch. That's a no-brainer. It's just a natural fit with the themes of the gothic AP. And the decision to use Xiuj Hak Leyng as our alchemist just made such perfect sense! A displaced Tian who settles in Ustalav practicing a whole new set of anatomy and healing techniques involving the Seven Ghost Needles? Yes, please! Imagine the fun he'll have in Trial of the Beast and the AP's end-game. When we set out to do these Adventure Path Plug-In products, we all said we wanted this stuff to be "legendary." And that's what we're striving for...
Looking forward to whatever you come up with next.
So are we! Next up, we have a couple of gothic-style, side-trek adventures called The Murmurring Fountain (by Clark and Jason) and Fiddler's Lament (by Greg A. Vaughan). Manuscripts, cartography, and art are ready to go for both of them. They're in layout right now.
On the horizon, we're still eyeing a new bestiary-themed PDF to expand your options with constructs of varying CRs. We're calling it the Construct Codex and the manuscript is done. We're about to get the artists started on it.
We've also got a spell-themed product in the works called Tomes of Ancient Knowledge. It'll have a strong Cthulu bent to it, giving you some new mythos-inspired spells which can rob bits of your sanity the further you dabble in their mysteries. From my understanding, it's a little over half-written at this point.
So, obviously, there's more to come. And that's just for the plug-in material in this single AP. We're already having discussions about some of the other APs (both new and old). So, keep an eye on us. We're all super-busy with our usual freelance assignments. But, when we make time for a Legendary product, you know we're going to do it justice and build in the quality. Paizo already set that bar. And we're doing our best to live up to that standard. Honestly, we wouldn't have it any other way.
My two cents,
--Neil

Now on popular demand, the character art without watermarks:
I'm not a fan of using watermarks but since the product was not out yet when I started releasing those previews, I kinda wanted to make them a little restrictive.
We'll be whiping out Persimmon and Theodric's minis soon as a complementary download.
Stay tuned!

I happen to really love pencil art work. And in particular I happen to love Hugo's pencil work. Really love it, I mean. I think he has a real amazing touch with his pencils. There is so much depth and detail and life to them. I love them. Not trying to embarrass you, Hugo, but you know I love your pencil work. :) Hugo has a quality in his pencils that remind me of Trampier's pen and ink, my favorite artist of all time. Not the same ultra clean quality, but the same life to them. I don't see that same thing in his color work yet. I'm sure he will get there. I wish I was better at understanding art so I could do a better job describing what I see and feel, and I certainly don't mean to criticize Hugo's color work. I think it is very good. I just think he has a special gift with pencils.

2) if I can actually convince him to color them for the hell of it. :)
As for Hugo I think his pencil/B&W art has come a long way and he is getting very very talented with it. But I also agree his color is lagging behind a bit in quality so far. Which is another reason he could use the practice. :)

That is one of the main reasons yes. I used to get a lot of free time to colour but lately I have had practically zero and haven't put up a new piece on DA in over a year. :(
There are a couple of these pieces that I'd be interested in attempting since, like Clark, I am a huge fan of Hugo's pencil work and find it very relaxing to colour. There's a link in my profile to my DA page, but here it is if you're interested. :)
I will definitely try and get some done for you to see how they turn out. :)

I understand the reasons for Hugo putting up the DA splash (although like him I thought it was more from a LG protecting their art point of view than Hugo doing so (and thanks Hugo for removing them by the way... :D ). And other than as a teaser, I think that putting them up on the LG website isn't necessarily in your company's best interests either. But as Clark said above, putting them into the .pdf, whether in the original or just the printer friendly version is definitely a good idea.
One of the things I like about Paizo's (and some of the other 3PPs out there) .pdfs is the ability to drag images out of them. I use these for a number of things, from in game resources to character inspiration (my current Pen & Paper Magus character uses Ailyn Ghontasavos as her visual base.
