Pathfinder Legends is the title of a product line that dramatizes chapters of popular Pathfinder adventure paths by including four of Pathfinder's iconic characters (Valeros the fighter, Merisiel the rogue, Ezren the wizard, and Harsk the ranger) in what is basically an audio-play complete with background music and special effects. So, the somewhat awkwardly titled "Pathfinder Legends: Rise of the Runelords # 1: Burnt Offerings" covers the first installment of that adventure path.

The most important thing to remember before buying this is that these are •not• novelizations. There is no narrator, nor is there description of events or action scenes. Instead, the story is told solely through dialogue (and sound effects), which means that the listener can usually get the gist of the plot but there is far, far less detail and immersion in the setting than one would get through a novelization or even reading the adventure itself. Because many scenes in the adventure are skipped and there's no narration, the entire first chapter of the adventure path (which would take several sessions to play at the gaming table) is reduced to less than an hour. In other words, this audio recording will hit the highlights of each chapter of the adventure path, but in a rather shallow way.

There are some nice features in the recording. The voice acting of the Iconics is strong and fits with how I imagined them from the comics (the goblins need to be more shrill though, methinks) and the sound effects and music is quite good and up to Big Finish's usual standard. The dialogue is professionally written and manages, for the most part, to establish what is happening in the plot.

Still, all of that being said, I think the conclusion has to be that this is a disappointment. Combat scenes, so integral to a sword-and-sorcery adventure like this one, are reduced to a lot of grunting, exciting music, and "sword clangs" sound effects. There's no way to get a sense of what's going on, who's doing cool stuff, how the difference Iconics fight, what the villains look like, how overwhelming the odds are, etc. If you haven't read the adventure path, I'd imagine the listener would be quite lost in many places and find it incredibly difficult to imagine the scenes. I would have far, far preferred that this was a true audiobook based on a novelization of the adventure path than in this sort of "dialogue-only" format.

What adds insult to injury is how expensive these recordings are given how short they are. It's just not good value for money, and I'd be embarrassed to spend something like $ 90 to $ 120 USD to have all six parts. I can get full-length, full-cast audiobooks for a third to a half of that.

Even hardcore Pathfinder enthusiasts could find better things to spend their money on. So, as a whole, I have to recommend giving this one a miss.

SPOILERS

Some parts of the first chapter of the adventure path are skipped. There's very little "role-playing" in Sandpoint, and most of the key NPCs (apart from Ameiko and Sheriff Hemlock) barely appear at all. Some of the most memorable encounters from the adventure, like "The Shopkeeper's Daughter" and "Monster in the Closet" don't appear at all. The Catacombs of Wrath are also skipped. I'm not saying we need to see the Iconics in every random encounter that would feature in a real campaign, but I can't help but feel like the writers of the script were in a big hurry and with instructions to condense the story down as much as possible.

I will say, to be fair, that they did a really nice job explaining Nualia's backstory in a clear, coherent, and interesting way. I'm sure most gaming groups get a much more confused picture of why she's doing what she's doing. In addition, I quite liked the "twist" of the Iconics getting captured at Thistletop.

Pathfinder Legends—Rise of the Runelords #1: Burnt Offerings

NO SPOILERS

But why so short? (3 stars)Narangohttps://paizo.com/products/btpy91vs?Pathfinder-Legends-Rise-of-the-Runelords-1-Burnt-Offerings2016-02-19T14:27:30Z
Pathfinder Legends—Rise of the Runelords #1: Burnt Offerings

I really enjoyed the heck this audio production. Well acted, great music and sound effects, and just well done all together. But I can't figure why it was so short. Was it the cost of production? I mean the running time was about an hour, and like 10-15 minutes of that was just music. It felt like a credits sequence, but without the credits...

Anyway, I really wish it had a little more time to develop the characters and the story, which with the material it's based on could have easily had 4 hours worth of stuff. I mean, obviously I get cutting out the dungeon crawling parts as that would have been boring, but there was a lot interesting side characters that were omitted from the story that I think would have made it a much richer experience.

That's my 2 cents, anyway. Hopefully Paizo and Big Finish will consider that for future Pathfinder Legends works.

Pathfinder Legends—Rise of the Runelords #1: Burnt Offerings

I really enjoyed the heck this audio production. From the outset the accents make me think of the complaint that modern fantasy worlds are "ren faires with elf ears," but after you get past that you can start having fun. The voice actor for Valeros is perfect, the guy who does Hemlock fits the image I've always had in my mind, and it gets into the motivation of the NPCs in ways that the PCs in my campaign just didn't really manage. Also, it's not afraid to mess with the plot in minor ways, so it's not just the same story re-hashed—it's more like it's re-told. So: Bonus.

Pathfinder Legends—Rise of the Runelords #1: Burnt Offerings

We finally got around to listening to this and I was surprised by how much I liked it. With just one hour, I thought the story would be rush, and the characters hollow if flavorful. I was blissfully wrong. Having played through the AP, and seen the Burnt Offerings stageplay, this was thrilling.

The adaptation is incredible, incorporating lots of great concepts I recognized from the forums. It turned the plot into a real adventure, not just a narration of a story.

The voices were excellent - I'm not good at picking out voices typically, but I was able to easily distinguish all of the characters most of the time. The one occasion of 4-5 fights happening simultaneously was less successful audibly, although exciting narratively.

I highly recommend this for any ROTRL fan or GM. It's worth the price just to have Kendra's speech at the beginning, and the best characterization of Harsk yet. It's by no means perfect, but I can't imagine a more successful beginning.

Pathfinder Legends—Rise of the Runelords #1: Burnt Offerings

I just had a chance to listen to this for the first time and am blown away. I've always enjoyed Big Finish, and this one certainly did not disappoint. I actually found myself laughing out loud at Toby Longworth's goblin characters. The large cast helped create a living and breathing world, and you never found yourself saying: "Well, he's the fighter, and he's the wizard." The characters were unique enough to think of them as people, rather than classes.

The one criticism I can level at it is that I am somewhat unaccustomed to the lack of narration. I was occasionally confused who was fighting who, or where the scene was set. I had a much better grasp of it the second time around and felt like I appreciated its subtleties more.

If it's important, this is my first experience with any of the Rise of the Runelords adventure. Consequentially, I cannot comment on it in context with existing lore.

Pathfinder Legends—Rise of the Runelords #1: Burnt Offerings

Burnt Offerings provided a fascinating world with interesting characters, witty dialogue and good pacing. I'm giving it 5 stars and these are the reasons:
- It's very well done (it seems who wrote this down was really an expert of Golarion and Pathfinder rules) and sometimes just an adjective is well chosen to create the proper atmosphere and to make expert of Golarion think to a deeper story.
- It's very useful. If you are going to run this AP then buy it. I can just imagine how much useful this will be when the overall campaign arc will be available. To read all the books before starting an AP is not an easy task and Pathfinder Legends could do the job for you in few hours and without any effort. This is also a reason why the choice to have every book represented in just one hour can have also a positive impact. And let's say that who really has the possibility to play all the APs on your shelf... at least in this way you'd have a tast of those.
Also, there are a lot of sections that can be taken from the drama and used directly in your campaigns. And listening to the different NPCs will give every GM extraordinary ideas for role playing.
- It's very funny. It really is. The author and the actors have been able to create a story where the different heroes have strong and funny relations... This should help PCs to learn how to play good RPGs, for me it can be seen as a sort og GM rulebook add on.
- We need this and I hope Big Finish will continue with Pathfinder Legends after RotR so I hope my positive approach with this review will help people to be convinced to try this product. I'm sure no one will be disappointed. All the previous critics done before from other users are probably true but, even if almost every Paizo fans would love a CBO series of our APs, I think what Big Finish gave us is already very much to be enjoyed.

Pathfinder Legends—Rise of the Runelords #1: Burnt Offerings

I love this.
Audio Program- Pathfinder Legends-Rise of the Runelords #1: Burnt Offering
Producer – Paizo and Big Finish
Price- ~$11
TL;DR-Well done, but price prohibitive 73%

Basics- Relive the most well loved Pathfinder adventure paths Rise of the Runelords! This audio program is a one hour reimagining of the first part of the adventure path Burnt offerings. Follow the iconic Pathfinder characters Ezren, Harsk, Merisiel, and Valeros as they arrive just in time for the Swallowtail festival and just in time for the goblin attack. Can the group save the town and uncover the deeper plot beneath the surface?

Setting, Sounds, and Execution- The setting feels fantasy. I enjoyed hearing character talk about the Pathfinder places I've read about before and that brought it a bit more to life. The program had some well done sounds, but you will get a little bit bored as you head the same smashing melon, sliced melon, or clashing steel sound over and over again. But, the foley artists did do a good job in general. My biggest complaint is the price. The program is $10 for one hour of sounds. I tend to do comparisons to movie prices. For $10 bucks I can see a two hour movie which is sound AND pictures. That price point will drive away a lot of people from the product as for double the price you get the adventure path product the story is based on. And that will take you much more than one hour to play through. 2/5

Characters- It's the iconics! You get to hear them! Fanboy/girl out! They sound like they should, and their lines are well delivered. Heck, this one has a well done version of the famous goblin song that we all know and love. 5/5

Story- If you've played through Burnt Offerings you know what you're getting. I haven't, but I did play the adventure card game. I really liked this. It does a great job telling the story. I felt I was along the ride for the story. Its short, and the story moves fast. So, you don't get a lot of breathing time in the story. I would like them to slow down a bit. I enjoyed Ezren as the narrator as he wrote his adventures down for the Pathfinder Chronicles. That worked well getting across sections of the story that don't have an audio component. 4/5

Summary- I liked this. It was a fun ride on my way to work in the morning. My main criticism is the length and the price. It's only an hour, and most books will take you at least eight to get through. Audiobooks have a price of ~$15 bucks and those are at least eight. The length doesn't make you feel like this is value for money. But, if you can see past that, you will be on an awesome adventure trying to save Sandpoint. 73%

Pathfinder Legends—Rise of the Runelords #1: Burnt Offerings

Originally posted on www.throatpunchgames.com, a new idea everyday!

fine_young_misanthrope2014-04-09T23:04:47ZPathfinder Legends—Rise of the Runelords #1: Burnt Offerings: Great, but not quite legendary (4 stars)NerdOfTheYearhttps://paizo.com/products/btpy91vs?Pathfinder-Legends-Rise-of-the-Runelords-1-Burnt-Offerings2014-04-07T13:33:01Z
Pathfinder Legends—Rise of the Runelords #1: Burnt Offerings

I agree with most of the other reviewers so far, so I'll keep my review quite brief.

PROS:
- Excellent Voice Acting
- Good scripting/Dialogue
- Excellent fun, will listen again, especially before running the campaigns with a group.

CONS:
- Could definitely have been longer. It underplayed some of the interaction with Foxglove, which bears importance on part II.
- Combat was often too long
- Combat noises sometimes clashed with combat dialogue.

Overall, an excellent download, and i'll be getting the rest of the Chapters as they come out.

Pathfinder Legends—Rise of the Runelords #1: Burnt Offerings

I agree with most of the other reviewers so far, so I'll keep my review quite brief.

I'll often create an audio summary of each game session complete with music and sound effects. Thus, I completely enjoyed this production. I’ve listened to it twice the day I purchased it. I was DM when our group played Burnt Offerings so it really was great to hear. The acting, voices, music and sound effects are all well done. At times I think the fight scenes may be too long as it’s difficult to follow what’s going on with just audio. I also think this could be longer. There is a lot of material packed into one hour. I loved Ezren’s narration throughout the episode. If anything, we need more of this as it’s a great way to provide background information and to explain to the listener what’s going on. In the end, I recommend this production. If you plan being DM for Rise of the Runelords - this is a must have. If you have played Rise of the Runelords you’ll most likely love it! Really looking forward to the next episodes.

Pathfinder Legends—Rise of the Runelords #1: Burnt Offerings

I'm big into audio when it comes to my games. Since I'm familiar with the ROTRL storyline, I was able to keep up. I think that too much material was attempted, however, and that this rightly should have been a 2 or 3 episode release. That would have allowed for more narration for listeners who are not familiar with the storyline and smoother transitions between action scenes.

My critiques have already been covered by others. So I think this is enjoyable and worth the money. voice acting was spot on. I liked the voice of the goblin, but wish the actor changed his voice because every goblin was the same.

price, thankfully paizo offered this at a reduced price for the time being. I still think its too much for what is given, but I was curious about it.

story, yeah its a pro and a con. The story could of been fleshed out more. It doesn't do the story justice to just run from one action scene to the next. With that said I still enjoyed what was presented.

Pathfinder Legends—Rise of the Runelords #1: Burnt Offerings

PROS:

But there are a few things that keep it from being great. First and foremost, it was rushed. There is a lot to cover in "Burnt Offerings" and I feel that the writing was stepping all over it self to get it all into just one installment. I would have prefer it to have been three or even fours hours of audio, spread across three or four installments. You could of had a lot more character development and story telling.

Second, if you are unfamiliar with the AP you would most likely be completely lost. I think this is a lot to do with my first point. You are basically jumping from one combat to the next, with a few exceptions.

Third, audio was to loud a few times making it difficult to listen to with ear buds. This mostly was during battles. I would have to turn my volume down to the point it was difficult to hear the actors.

On the plus side, acting was great. The Goblins was awesome... Nualia was fantastic and the "PC" were spot on. Great job all around...

I wasnt sure what to expect (the trailer didnt impress me to be honest) but I'm glad I bought it.

I thought the actors were great - the voices were clear, believable and distinctive. I also thought they were well cast - Valeros was the only one who sounded wrong to me at first, but I got used to his accent pretty quickly. At times the sound effects and/or music was a little loud - I had one or two moments of missing a line, especially during battles, but they were rare.

Sometimes the script bugged me, but on reflection the task was pretty challenging. There were one or two bits of dialogue where the characters are 'explaining' things they'd probably already know just so the audience can catch up. I found Ezren's narration of his notes to the Pathfinder Society a much better vehicle for that sort of thing really.

The script also walks a fine line in meeting the needs of those who know the AP and those who dont. As someone in the first category, I really enjoyed it however I could imagine it being hard to follow (perhaps?) if you didnt know something of the story first. There were also the odd bits of expository dialogue which I could have done without but which are no doubt necessary for those with no prior knowledge of Golarion.

The parts of the AP's plot which were included and the parts omitted were well chosen, I think. I would have preferred a longer, more thorough rendering of the story, but then again leaving the listener wanting more is probably far preferable than the alternative.

From some minimal research, it seems somewhat pricey for an audio-drama of this length, however I think the quality lives up to the price-tag. I'd certainly not be put off by the trailer - I dont think that was the best choice to represent the episode.

It was a good way to pass the time in traffic and I'll certainly be picking up a subscription as soon as it is available.

Pathfinder Legends—Rise of the Runelords #1: Burnt Offerings

This was my first foray into the world of audio-dramas. First I would like to say how I think of stars. I know lately people think that if something isn't 5 stars it isn't good. For me, that isn't the case. A four star for me means that there is room for improvement, but the product is good.

In this case, the ROTRL cd is a good product, but I will list what I feel is constructive to help it improve to a great one. So I will start with the improvements first.

The story felt a tad rushed, and I feel strongly that this is due to the 1 hour duration. There are times when the story loses a little flow and natural progression to reach a conclusion too quickly. I feel this would be greatly improved upon if the duration of the story was increased to 1.5-2 hours. Maybe there is a budget reason why it is only 1 hour, I don't know, but the cut in time costs the story a little.

Secondly, there are times when it feels assumed that the listener will automatically know references made. I know this product is aimed at Paizo customers who are probably already familiar with Pathfinder, but, I feel the product should be edited or referenced in a way that ANY listener would be able to follow it, and understand the story. Again, this is a cost of limiting the time to tell the story to 1 hour. You have to forego some explanations or development.

The goblin voice was great, but there was no variation to it that would distinguish it from other goblin voices. It was hard to tell a boss goblin from a normal goblin because of this. More variation in pitch or rhythm would help this. Small thing, but it would help.

Lastly, there are times when action overbears the dialogue in volume. I love a good battle scene, but if characters are talking please make sure it is easily heard over the combat. I'm sure there were times on the road when listening to this that people wondered what in the heck I had cranked up so loud, but hey, FREE ADVERTISING!

So that wraps up the "what could improve part", now on to what I liked. The music was very well done, really set the atmosphere for the story. I absolutely loved the bonus tracks at the end. Now, again I don't know about your budget but hear me out. If you could expand the bonus tracks a little, maybe have 3-4 each disk that the players could use while playing the game, that would be absolutely brilliant and wonderful at the same time! Players who bought all the cd's would then have an entire album worth of soundtrack to loop for their home game. That alone would increase your sales, and honestly you should market that feature as a bonus so people know about it. It's pure gold my friends!

The character voices were great. Each voice really represented the character in a way that I could easily put the voice to the character, and that was a good thing in some scenes where multiple people were quickly talking. I didn't have a single complaint about the voices of the main characters or main NPC's. Well done. Just keep in mind that multiple NPC's of the same race need slight variation to help keep them separate and that would be perfect.

The story was well done, and I liked the suspense created with the actors and the music. I truly wish they had more time as I could listen to these guys tell a story for hours at a time. The editing was well done for the 1 hour time frame allocated to it. I know it is hard to take all that content and condense it down to 1 hour. I'm sure there will be people who feel that parts were left out that they wanted to hear in the story, but being realistic about the 1 hour limit, they did a good job of getting the biggest parts in there.

So, I give this a solid 4 stars for a solid product that is worth your hard earned money, especially if you enjoy this story anyway. It would, in my humble opinion, improve with the suggestions noted above and I sincerely hope they would be taken into consideration. I will be buying all the parts to the story, and eagerly await the next chapter!
