A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 3–7.

As an act of retribution, an enemy of the society begins hiring river pirates to waylay Pathfinder boats bound for the crusader nation of Mendev. Unless the Pathfinders can track down the party responsible and put an end to their piracy, the raids may spell the doom of the society’s ambitions to the north.

Content in "You Have What You Hold" also contributes directly to the ongoing storyline of the Sczarni faction.

Written by Sean McGowan.

This scenario is designed for play in Pathfinder Society Organized Play, but can easily be adapted for use with any world. This scenario is compliant with the Open Game License (OGL) and is suitable for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.

Are You Not Entertained!?

Perspective: Played once at high tier, GM'd once at low tier.

I was originally wary that this scenario would be pretty uninteresting according to the scenario pitch. PFS has already had plenty of scenarios where you stop pirates getting at valuable cargo and the lack of Mendev seemed like this one might be a little dry. I am happy to report that I was totally wrong. This scenario is as infused with the setting as it is with memorable combats. It is not just about protecting cargo - it goes way further than that. The new prestige system is showing its strength with an option for the PCs to go that little bit further towards a cinematic and dangerous final act.

-Fantastic use of Tymon. The author squeezed every drop of flavour out of the setting and did the River Kingdoms proud.
-A good fight should have interesting terrain, interesting enemy tactics and should make the PCs think about what they're doing. All the combats in this scenario achieve that goal. There's magical warfare on the river and prestigious arena combat.
-Good stat blocks for enemies. Gone are the useless core rulebook feats, replaced with new and interesting options where foes signal the crowd, mass-demoralise and conjure a owlbear on your head.
-Great chance to use roleplay to dial down difficulty of fights. A little bit Stormwind Fallacy, but appreciated nonetheless.
-Great chronicle sheet and wonderful work on VC Holgarin Smine.

-Would have appreciated trap stat blocks for the final act rather than the embedded text writeups that can be difficult to find mid-fight.
-More information on whether arena combatants are aware of traps or not.
-I realise casters stat blocks take up lots of word count, but it'd have been great if Helkit Silverbane had at least one employee who could cast Dispel Magic.
-The Sczarni faction mission appears to be changing from its original emailed write-up. A small handout for players who don't get the chance to play everything would have been nice, but oh well.

GM'd it. The players & I had a blast

This definitely requires some prep time for GMs, but the results are worth it.

I GM'd it @ the 6-7 tier. RP is available for those who wish it (including some places where you wouldn't expect it), each combat feels different due to terrain, and although the fights can be challenging, judicious fireball usage can yield incredible results.

Spend the time to understand the feats available to the BBEG, especially in relation to some of the final fight's mechanics.

Seems very complicated.

Just gave this a quick read-through after purchasing and thought 'wow, i have a lot of prepping to do!' This is a scenario that has many villians with abilities that a PFS character would not have. I envision a TPK (even at the low tier) in the first encounter since no PFS PC would ever plan on having the feats, skills, and special abilities these guys have. There is some role-playing involved that can affect the outcome of a couple encounters, but probably too much for a 4 hour limit. This should have been broken up into a two-parter because a GM will have a lot of homework to do in preparation for this. Also, a tracking sheet would have been useful for both the PCs & villians in the final fight.

The setting & locations are a nice change and make for
interesting encounters, but, with all the prep & record
keeping during encounters, it will definitely take more than
4 hours to run this. I will update this review after I have
actually GMd it. So, 3 stars for a challenging and location specific scenario.
