Ultimate Psionics is just that—the ultimate book on psionics, combining nearly all of the material in Psionics Unleashed and Psionics Expanded into a single hardcover book. But not only does Ultimate Psionics contain existing content, over seventy pages of brand new material has been added (separately released as Psionics Augmented for those who already have Psionics Unleashed and Psionics Expanded), giving more character options, advice for game masters on using psionics, and even an example of completely altering the theme of psionics from the power of the mind to runic magic, to help you understand how easy it is to change the feel of psionics without changing the system so that it can easily fit into any campaign.

Ultimate Psionics is an over-400 page hardcover book that includes:

  • Ten psionic races, including the brand new forgeborn and noral, with racial archetypes, advanced racial options, and more
  • Ten psionic classes from the psion and soulknife to the aegis and vitalist, giving everything you need to have an all-psionic party
  • Psionic skills and feats, including over forty brand new psionic feats such as Assassin's Venom, Deep Focus, and Telepathic Link
  • Over 100 pages of psionic powers, including 0th level psionic talents new powers like T’Nail’s Ardent Legion
  • Nineteen psionic prestige classes, including the brand new Dark Tempest prestige class
  • More psionic items than could ever be found in any treasure horde, including legendary items like the Heartstaff and the Dancing Robes of Sharatwan and over 10 pages of brand new psionic items like the greater psicrystal staff, the tactician's chessboard, and more.
  • An entire section for advice and tips for game masters on introducing and using psionics, including the most commonly encountered rules mistakes, how to handle transparency, and variant themes if you don't want mental power and prefer psionics to be a form of magic.
  • And much more!

5/5

At the time of writing this review there are 10 reviews of it already. Plus each expansion has reviews and the first product has 13 reviews. There are threads on Paizo's forums and other places on the internet. The book is often on the top ten list of Paizo's third party sales. There are arguments about the power level and articles about it and the publishers have two more entire subsystems coming out with a Kickstarter money, forums of fans and is often quoted as the only third party publisher allowed at certain tables.

What the heck am I supposed to say after all that?! I can't review this. Its probably the most acclaimed third party product in all of Pathfinder. Everybody loves it, and if you don't you probably aren't going to be too thrilled with any other third party product or someone is going to come along to explain why you not liking it makes you a dirty poopy-head, and they're right! Well if you're okay with the very idea of psionics to begin with.

What's going on in this book is that it's a compilation of the psionic stuff that came out before it making for a fat book rivaling the Pathfinder Core Rulebook, detailing new races, new classes, magic items, feats, archetypes and prestige classes all supporting psionics. In fact it might as well be the core rulebook for psionics. If you get this book you have pretty much a core rulebook full of information on an entire class of magic and enough classes and subclasses and prestige classes and options to keep you busy for years.

But what are psionics? In a nutshell it's 'mind magic'. If you want to make a crystal ball massaging gypsy curse dealing psychic you're going to be disappointed. This is more like Esper or Psychic Pokemon variety mind magic making it feel kind of like psuedo-scientific ESP stuff than talking to spirits or new age tarot reading. But these guys aren't just bending spoons, they're generating mind-light sabers and shooting psychic lasers. This is all centered around a new way to cast their spell-like 'Powers' with a pool of points representing their psionic energy. Its a neat system, especially if you're tired of spell slots, but not each of the classes in here are based around the powers. you get a few that use their mind to do other things like create armor and weapons, plus you get some feats so anyone can tap into their mind and do a few tricks. Its a new world, a whole new way to play. Once you crack it open and start playing it's hard to dismiss. Its just a cool bunch of options.

So why did I buy this? What made me go "okay, I'm going to use this." Well for one you can see most of the options on d20pfsrd.com, which helps you figure out if you think this system is more broken than a core rulebook wizard. I went ahead and did the legwork of comparing the best powers to Magic spells and how well they can cast and found powers to be overall weaker than magic with superior casting options but way less variety so the strongest psionic class comes off about as powerful as a well made Sorcerer. I also liked having the option of presenting casting that felt less ole-timey for when I wanted to run a steampunk or space campaign. It's also the most 'complete' alternate system experience I've ever seen, and trying it with newer players they were able to pick it up much and understand it faster than vancian casting. So it won me over. Five stars all around. You just cant lose with this book.

Words can't describe.

5/5

This book is absolutely amazing. Dreamscarred Press show us once again that they're the undisputed masters of flavorful, balanced psionics. This beautiful book has a place of honor on my shelf right next to my Core Rulebook, and if I could only pick one rules supplement to use in a campaign, it would be this one by far.

The Essential Psionic Book

5/5

It's been said a hundred times, but Dreamscarred Press creates fantastic products. Where they shine the most is in their psionic material. This book is *the* book for psionics, hands down.

I don't have anything to add that's not already been said. So I'll keep this very short. This book's cover was done by Wayne Reynolds, appropriate for a book of this quality. However, plenty of the artwork in this book is less than stellar. I expected more from a giant of a 3pp company (as giant as they get, anyways).

Despite some of the underwhelming art, the text inside is filled with as much psionic crunch and flavor you could ever ask for. There's a reason this is the go to book for psionics. It has absolutely everything you need and more. If you're thinking about adding psionics to your game, don't wait. Get this book now!

Awesome Book!

5/5

Gotta say that having it in my hand makes it even more impressive than the PDF I fell in love with. Now that I can't rely on PDF word search I am really impressed by the formatting in the book.

Everything is easy to find. When I have a question it's very easy to find an appropriate answer by perusing the ToC. The title "Ultimate Psionics" really applies as just about all the character concepts I could want as a Pdionic can be made from all the Base Classes, Archetypes, and Prestige Classes detailed!

The only downside was that my mailman stuffed it too roughly into my mailbox and it bent in some of the back cover's corner. The damage is pretty minor and impossible to see on my bookshelf, so I'm not getting too down over it.

The only singular problem with this book is that the pages are a bit more fragile than I would like.

Edit: After about a year of using this book on the table I can say that it still deserves 5 stars, excellent book.

THE Definitive Psionics Book

4/5

This won't be a long review, because I can't compete with Endzeitgeist's excellent reviews. It's really a small list of glitches that affected my impressions of the books.

First, the good stuff. Fixes to original base classes are great and were necessary, as well as changing some of the feats and the addition of 0 level powers. All good. The expanded list of powers is amazing, and the new classes, for the most part, are pretty interesting. More on that in a second.

The artwork is good, not stellar but, but good. My only gripe with it is once again a female ophiduan was shown with hair and breasts. They're reptiles for Pete's sake, and it clearly says in their description they are hairless. Grr.

There are an uncomfortable number of typos and some awkward sentence structuring, but it's easy enough to extrapolate what's being said in each case. I wish that they'd proofread things a bit more thoroughly.

My biggest "gripe" is the Dread seems unnecessary in my book. It's focus is very narrow and would've made a better psion prestige class, in my opinion, just as the marksman would've been a better psychic warrior PrC.

Overall I'm going to give the book 4 stars, largely for the truly amazing amount of work that went into it. But the glaring typos and curvaceous ophiduan really bugged me.

Addendum. I received two copies 4 days apart with the same order number, though I only purchased one. I've been in touch with Paizo Customer Service and as soon as I get paid I'll be sending the extra copy back so that someone else might enjoy it.

Mine is a January pre-order for a color hardcover, and I got a shipment email from Paizo today as well, if that helps!

I was wondering the same thing. I ordered mine in February.

Mine's ready to ship, but I received a message today telling me my payment method was declined. I purchased it with a gift certificate which was properly redeemed. Now I'm waiting for Customer Service to return so I can maybe get some answers.

I just wanted to share that the community just released v2.4 of Ultimate Psionics for Hero Lab. It includes the new classes and races from UP. Lots of powers and traits added. Its not 100% done as its a work in progress but allot is done and functional.

This requires nothing more than a "CORE" license for Hero Lab. No additional packages required at this time to get it to load.

We are running 100% through the Powered by HL feature so you need a single one time setup to the Community Servers to download. This means you download and install all from inside of HL. Plus when a new version comes out you will be auto-notified to download and install.

Mine shipped today evidently. Did everyone who pre-ordered, kickstarted get theirs (shipped/arrived) though? I just wonder because I had mine ordered on March 1.

Ordered mine on March 9th, but no shipment yet...that's ok, though, I'm deep in the midst of several campaigns, so it's not a huge priority. I'm just bad at waiting. :-P

Jeremy, will DSP have a booth at GenCon? And if so, will Ultimate Psionics be available?

I think we need a psionic system where psychic energy is harnessed after 8 hours of rest and each psionic ability is prepared during an hour of meditation and the psychic energy is stored as a specific energy pattern that is released by the psion. Now some psychic abilities may require material components to harness because the psychic energy is too much to release without a physical conduit. Additionally certain physical movements may be needed for some abilities to channel the energy, basically the body needs to align to focus chi in order to release the stored energy. Many spells will also need a verbal trigger to release. I would really like to see a psionic system like this. We could even have books that explain how to store the psychic energy in your minds so that a psion could learn many different abilities too store in themselves.

So, the wizard with the serial numbers filed off?

Hobbun - yes and yes.

Wizard is just what more primitive people called wizards and witches.

I will add that I do like dreamscarred psionics. I just roleplay the psion as the magic user that can directly harness psionic energy where a wizard needs incantations (verbal componenets), aligning his chi (somatic components), and alchemy (material components) to use magic (psionics).

Blasphemy. You should just play a wizard ad let the rest of us enjoy psionics as they are.

I kinda like your idea of a conduit though. Maybe there could be some sort of psioic item, a gem perhaps, that acts as a conduit and enhances the limit of the talented feat. Phenomenal idea right there.

Arnwolf wrote:

First, your skipping over the difference in game mechanics, which is a huge reason I favor psionics.

Secondly, psionics and magic can be viewed as both the same as magic or different, it all depends on whether the source of power in your setting is the same or different, just ask Dr. Strange or Gene Gray.

Personally while I like magic in a medieval setting, I think psionics fits much better in a sci fy or oriental setting, and fits nicely in a mixed bag as well. As it is, its my favorite aspect of play, and I would be devastated to see it tampered with to resemble magic.

I hear what you are saying. I just replace the sorcerer as the psion in PHB and have the Psion as the class that can manipulate raw magic because of the genetics of their bloodlines. Pure humans just can't do that and that is why they need components V,S,and M to manipulate magic. A human just can't channel the energy, thus wizards use components to channel the energies and Psion (Sorcerers) do it themselves. I do repeat do like the system Dreamscarred press put in place.

Of course! So while your component-requiring "Psion" is tied up and gagged, unable to do a thing ('cause he didn't invest in the feats to remove the component requirements...), my actual Psion will just grin, mindwipe the people holding her captive, then burn off the ropes binding her. ;)

Oh sweet baby Jesus... finally, my book is on its way. Lol. If only I could time hop.

@Jeremy Smith have you noticed the debate on the dsp site about conceal thoughts? I've looked for a clarification here and there both and all its really sparked are debates or silence. I think many of us are hoping for an official intervention

Mine was shipped on May 2nd and isn't due to arrive until May 13th. How th'? .... Is the secret lair of Dreamscarred Press on Ceres or something?

Huh, Mine got shipped the 1st and said it would arrive the seventh and the delivery people didn't botch shipping for once. (I have ordered a lot of things on the internet, shipping is never my friend)

I am quite enjoying the book just having my normal problem of making decisions on character build, powers, feats etc.

No spells just powers. The package started as Psionics Unleashed and then Psionics Expanded. So no we have not done a comparison of every powers text. But when I was spot checking I didn't find any that where different in UP.

Of course any help is always welcome if you wanted to double check them and let us know any powers that need to be updated. =)

Claws of the Beast is different from Psionics Unleashed.

I replied at the Dreamscarred site as well, but in case you come here first:

Yes, it's just a bonus to lie.

Sorry for not replying sooner. :)

My copy just landed on my doorstep.

The packaging . . .

After reading about all the damaged copies, I was a little worried.
The outside of the box did have minor damage on arrival. Looks like 'crush' damage, like getting caught between 2 very large objects, but after opening the box up, I was pleasantly surprised at just how well the book was protected. Plenty of foam peanuts and a cushion of foam around the edges. Book arrived with zero damage and in perfect/mint condition. Well done!

The book . . .

I have not had time to look inside much, but the binding is tight and the cover meets or exceeds the quality of similar Pathfinder hard-back books. It's thick. Obviously containing a lot of content.

About myself and my relationship with the class . . .

As a player/GM I grew up playing the Wizard class in first and second edition D&D. So when Psionics really matured in D&D 3rd edition, the Psionic class very much became a easy choice for me. The ability to kill with a thought is 'mind blowing', lol. No other class is as potentially deadly as a Psionic Class, and that is the way it should be. When I GM/DM a game, players with characters who possess psionics have the edge and I make that clear during game-play. All of the cool powers that have been dropped over time from past editions of D&D are still available to my psionic players in Pathfinder. I also encourage my players to design their own psionic powers and often take an active role in the process. I will on occasion pit a challenging psionic foe against the party. This often forces the party to think in new/unexpected ways. As expected, I always reward generously for overcoming such challenges.

Although I do not currently have a gaming group, I can't wait to dive in to these pages and lose myself.

MINE IS HERE! IT ARRIVED 4 DAYS EARLIER THAN I EXPECTED!!! Ok...calm down, Cal... whew.. ok...

Seriously, this is a beautiful book, inside and out. I was lucky enough to be able to get the full color version and I must say I am blown away. And it came just in time, as I have to dog sit for a friend this weekend and she doesn't have television, so this'll give me something to keep my mind active. (See what I did there)?

Again, VERY excited to finally have this!

Bummed this isn't going out with my May subs. No worries, I'm okay with the pdf, I understand it has been a rocky road. So a big thanks to Jeremy for his hard work and transparancy.

I'd just like to underline what appears to have happened just now. It looks to me like a systems issue caused Laschoni's copy of UP to not slot into his/her monthly subscription. Laschoni made a comment about it in a thread generally about the product, way the heck down the page. A Paizo staffer saw this, and took care of the issue without being asked.

This. This is why Paizo are awesome.

I noticed the full page add in the new UP for the Psionic Bestiary. Did I miss this release? If so, I have to start saving up for it. I wonder how much plasma I have left.....

Yes, because wizards spend at least every other adventure tied up and gagged. Wizards are so boring to play because they can't do anything but be tied or helpless or impotent because of a silence spell :-) But I do like both classes for those very reasons my friends, one more mortal using components to manipulate the power of the gods, the other can manipulate that power directly, but more limited in scope.

Hey folks,

We've had some issues with items on backorder that we have *some* in the warehouse and a bunch of people who's Ultimate Psionics should have been included in their subscription order did not get it added. I'm working on correcting this as quickly as I can.

Cheers

Ok, explain this like I'm a 3rd grader so I can then explain it the same way to a friend of mine. He firmly stands on the idea that bonus power points stack each level. For instance, a 5th level psion with a 14 INT gets 5 bonus points. He believes the character would get that 5, plus the previous 1, 2, 3, and 4 points from earlier levels. I just want something I can show him "officially". (Watch me be the one in the wrong... LOL).

How To Determine Bonus Power Points: Your key ability score grants you additional power points equal to your key ability modifier × your manifester level ×½.

So a 7th-level psion with Int 30 (modifier of +10) should have 10 x 7 / 2 = 35. Let's go look at the table where 7th and 30-31 intersect to see if we're right. Hey look! Proof!

Enjoy.

Thanks!!!!!

For instance, a 5th level psion with a 14 INT gets 5 bonus points. He believes the character would get that 5, plus the previous 1, 2, 3, and 4 points from earlier levels. I just want something I can show him "officially". (Watch me be the one in the wrong... LOL).

key ability x 1/2 yur manifester level. No they don't stack, the chart simply shows the result of the equation for each possibility

Hooray, my hardcover copy just shipped!

If you don't mind my asking, when did you order?

I'm cautiously optimistic that mine may ship out of this batch as well.

Sure, I ordered the color hardcover/PDF bundle on January 8.

Thanks. I ordered on March 9th, so it looks like I could be waiting for a while... oh well.

Finally got my book a few days ago:) soooo happy.

In the purchase offers above is it possible to order a mint colored hardcover with out the PDF bundle? I have already ordered the PDF separately.

So i gotta ask, about how much rp is powerful build worth? im guessing in the 4/5/6 range, since there is no reach but also no size penalties.

There are several references to "deep crystal" that seem to be important for various things, but I can't find anything that says why or where it comes from.

Publisher, Dreamscarred Press

Deep Crystal is in the Psionic Items chapter.

And looks like something I need to add to our forthcoming Index for the book.
