Impressive Set

5/5

Finally decided between the Wrath of the Righteous and Legends of Golarion set and I am not dissapointed to have purchased this set. I find many of the miniatures to be very versatile to a GM.

PROS: Complete set, NO broken miniatures, above average sculpt and paint design.

CONS: Some miniatures painting is miscellaneous and poorly applied/blotchy. Overall, (compared to other reviews), I do feel I have a later sculpt/paint run and MOST of the miniatures are painted very well. The ones that are not, are distinctly so.

Top Miniatures:
All 4 Large genies. The King of the set is clearly the fire demon (I need at least 2 of these!).
Many people had complaints about the hell knights, however, I rather enjoyed the sculpts and painting so I picked up a few extra on the ebay market.
Serpent Folk High Preist - Great paint job and one of my favorites (surprisingly) from the set.

Least favorite:
Orc Archer - I do not understand the "bright" green on the bracers/leg guards on all 4 of the miniatures.
King Irovetti - Poorly painted and most dissapointing rare.
Akata - Okay for a common but (as other people seem to have noticed or had) there is one area on the head of several of the miniatures that is missing paint (white spot).

Overall, I recommend purchase of this set. It is unfortunate that with the large miniature sets being released so close together, I will now have to pick and choose which sets I want (I currently own all sets) but I had to choose between this set or Wrath of the Righteous.

Disapointed

2/5

I am alright with buying a case and not getting the full set that is just the way the cookie crumbles but in this set I reserved a number that were broken of their base and a box that only had 2 medium/small in the box. The cost of the products I expect better and more consistent production quality.

The commons in this set also had less versatility in particular the common larges are less multi-use figures then they have been in the past. Paint and figures are constantly good across the board.

I am a big believer in Paizo but this item was disappointing.

better than expected from the reviews

3/5

the first reviews were a fair warning, so what I got was better than expected.

the large figures are usually good.

the medium ones all equally excaptable though buying the rare figures as singles would be quite a disappointment.
the face of King Ivoretti is the only exception: It's a complete failure and not easy to fix with extra paint.

two breakages are probbably caused by a too heavy figure (the Toad Demon) squashing the other figures, the twiddly wire around the feet could not stop the top heavy body from dangling around.

Better, but not quite there...

4/5

I won't repeat what has been said in the very detailed and well thought out reviews below. I agree with much of what has been said: namely that for $400 one would expect to have better paint quality. Many of my minis had paint misaligned from where the detail of the sculpt was, and more than a few had large blobs of paint from where the equipment malfunctioned or needed to be cleaned more often.

That said, I believe this was a significant step up from the quality of my Skull & Shackles set. All of the large figures we spectacular. The small figures came out quite well, despite the difficulty presented in their size. Many of the medium (non-humanoid) creatures had some wonderful detail, and all of the sculpts were really top notch. The medium black dragon in particular was outstanding, and is one of my favorite figures in any of the Battles sets. In addition, I did receive a complete set with my case (to date, only Runelords left us with a few missing pieces).

If they can continue to improve upon the quality control of the paint process, and return to the standards we saw in the "Heroes & Monsters" and "Runelords" lines, this would be a truly outstanding product.

at least nothing is broken this time

3/5

I've ordered at least one case of every Pathfinder Battles set so far, two of most of them. I ordered two cases of the *Legends of Golarion* set. This is the first time that all the miniatures arrived intact. My expectations on this issue (broken miniatures) were so low that I was pretty happy.

As others have mentioned, the paint jobs here could stand some work. This is true both in terms of quality control (one of my goblin pyro #2s has half brown lips, like he has impetigo) and in terms of drab color selection. Some of the color choices are downright bizarre, for example the kobold archer, who is basically just a bumpy lump of brown. The scourge hellknight also could have used more contrast. I understand that some people didn't like the bright, cartoony colors from earlier sets, but I liked that look, and I don't like these darker, duller, drabber miniatures.

A related disappointment is that the orcs from this set don't look the same as the orcs in *Heroes & Monsters*. They look like different species, or orcs from two different fantasy universes. I wish I could place a variety of orcs on the table, some from this set, some from *Heroes & Monsters*, and have them look like they could all belong to the same species. That's not really possible here, though.

Oh, I got complete sets from each of my two cases. Between those two cases, I averaged 7.2 of each common figure (range 6-10) and about 5.2 (range 4-6) of each uncommon figure. I got exactly two of each rare figure.

And, again, at least nothing was broken this time.

I spoke with Erik Mona at GenCon asking why so many sets were coming out in such a short amount of time. He had indicated part of the reason was that there was a delay (WizKids end) with Skull and Shackles. That's why there was such a large gap in releases between Shattered Star and Skull and Shackles.

Erik then added that WizKids ramped up production to "catch up" with the following sets, but releases will probably even out to around 3 times a year.

I very much hope that is true. I would love to keep going the case route. :-)

I think three is still too much. That's $1500 per year for someone buying a single case per set. Add in the Evolution sets and Builder series that get put out in between and you're looking at close to $2000 in minis per year. As a retailer, I'm more worried that this will cause customers to realize (very quickly) that they have enough of what they need and just stop purchasing. I don't think new customers will be created at the rate that old ones drop off the wagon.

Call me a pessimist, I guess, for having that view, but it's what I saw with D&D minis' sales. There was a very long gap between the last DDM set and the first PFB set, so demand grew. I would like to not see that get overridden by a flood of product that comes out too quickly.

^ive spent almost double that this month alone lol. though I only spent like that because I just switched to pf from 3.5 and I fell in love so I wanted everything paizo makes. don't get me wrong, I couldn't purchase like that forever. I can keep up with 3 cases/year though

Personally, I'm alright with 3/year. I think that hits a good middleground between 'too many' and 'too few'.

It's still definitely expensive, but much better than the feared 4 or 5/year I was dreading.
With the addition of the Pathfinder builder sets, I'm realistically able to drop to one case per release, then fill out my commons with the builder sets. So I'm happy.

With book one is incredibly difficult. To be honest, getting it to line up with the end of the AP is still quite difficult due to the lead time of mini design. The adventures are finalised about 3 months before release, whilst art to be used for the minis needs to be around about 6 months before.

i see, so its a good thing im an AP behind then lol

This set looks amazing and will be the first time I’ve ordered bricks from the miniatures line.

However as a consumer, I have the following feedback.

When you have rare Golarion-specific creatures, such as Beautific One, Moonbeast, Sandpoint Devil, and Tazzlewurm (most of which I haven’t seen before let alone played in an AP or scenario), I’d prefer if they were all rares. I even want to see Reefclaw as uncommon.

While creatures like the djinni and efreeti are currently rare, it’s these creatures that should be uncommon. They have more value because players from both Pathfinder and D&D can use them, and in general they’re just more common in the games we run.

I especially want to see the iconics as uncommons, but you have them as rares! Even as uncommons these minis would be very popular and in high demand.

Selfish request: Would also like to see Red Mantis assassins sometime soon.

Thanks for listening and nice work on the mini line.

You didn't like large elemental barkeep who was serving a swarm of ants drinks at my bar in a fancy resturant?

I'm sad to say that I had to cancel my Battles subscription yesterday as I realized how close to one another the sets were becoming. This is simply too much for my budget. I wish they had continued with two sets a year.

I guess I'll pick up a few hand-picked singles instead.

Reffclaws usually show up in schools of 3 or more, so you need three of them on the table at a time. If you had a rare, then you would average 1,200 dollars* to be able to do a reefclaw encounter if you just buy packs and not singles market. Where the others are solitary creatures.

Reefclaws, Tatzlewurms, and the Sandpoint Devil all originally appeared in 3.5 D&D adventures... they can be used just as easily as Djinni and Efreeti, and haven't had 3+ sculpts done of them in the past. In a half dozen non-paizo 3.5 games I have either read or run since 2007, I've seen into more tatzlewurms (4, 3 of which were in published material) than Djinni and Efreeti combined (2, neither in published material) maybe this is because I dislike reading high level adventures... tatzlewurms are also as much from real-world myth as Djinni and Efreeti are, so they are not Golarion centric.

Jason S wrote:

Again this is opinion. As a PFS GM I would love to have them as common or uncommon, but if you read the Skull and Shackles thread, there are at least a dozen posts saying that the iconics should not be in the set at all. To each their own I guess.

I am that customer. I'm an admitted plastic crack addict and have been since Giants of Legend. I wasn't sure I could afford Undead Horde, but gave in and picked one up. Now I'm seriously considering skipping Legends of Golarion - though it kills me to think of such blasphemy.

I am too. I bought Shattered Star, but skipped Skull & Shackles, and even though this set looks amazing, I have to skip it as well, since I'm running Wrath of the Righteous soon and would prefer to have minis from that.

I think a better schedule would be two big sets a year, one at GenCon, the other at the beginning of the year. And in between, release Builder and Evolution sets. It's much more feasible on people's wallets and I think maintains more interest instead of just bombarding people with them to the point where only a tiny percentage can even afford them all.

I hope they do a pawn set for this too! That would be awesome. :)

I hope they fix the quality of their paint jobs. Ever since Paizo starting the prepainted minis their sculpts have been great and way back with the release of Heroes and Monsters the paint jobs were amazing for a prepainted plastic, but each set release loses more and more quality in paint detail. It went from stand alone quality to about as bad as the D&D prepainted minis and now the paint jobs on this last Skull and Shackles is almost as bad as the old mage knight prepainted minis. Almost half of the eyes that are paint stamped on are way out of place, like down on the cheeks or up on the forehead. Because this next Legends set has so many creatures in it I want (Sandpoint Devil) I am going to give it one more try, but if the paint quality isn't any better than the last couple of sets then I'm done with Pathfinder minis. Also slow down with releasing so many expensive sets so close together you greedy buggers, my character may have bags of gold filling up his Bag of Holding, but I don't. You have 3 expensive releases in December of all months. Should just direct deposit my money to Paizo and they can tell me if I can keep enough to eat or not. Paizo, take some pride in the quality of your work and take a break on our wallets.

Brell,

In this I could not disagree more. First it is NOT Paizo that is doing the miniatures.. it is Wizkids. I also disagree that the paint jobs are getting worse with each set released. I think that in fact they are improving tremendously. Are they professional quaility minis that you might see with metal mini's, not at all. But they are great none the less. With plastic miniatures the details tend to get lost in the plastic itself and while this is not an excuse it is just a clarification as to why you might think that it is loosing detail in the paint. This is simply NOT the case. Faces in particular are very detailed on the uncommons and rares and on the commons not as much. Regardless they are head over heals 10 times better then ANY of the Dungeons and Dragons pre-painted miniatures. I for one will continue to support the Pathfinder Battles miniature line because of this. Wizkids does it well!!
Now on the topic of release scheduling. This as been told many many times over. This years releases for miniatures is NOT normal. They were behind a set and decided to fit it in this year. Next year the release schedule will again normalize and you might see two to three sets and that is it. I agree it is expensive, but there is no reason you have to buy full cases for each set. I have got full cases of the first 3 but this one I do not. I will buy a bunch of boosters though I am sure. I enjoy the opening of them and love seeing the amazing details on the minis. I am going to be buying a full set of Legends of Golarion and Wraith of the Righteous too.
if you do not like them I can understand and the above is my opinion but I think many will agree with me in that opinion and certainly most people I talk to about them here where I live love them!! So much so they go and buy boosters when I show them the ones I have :)

Either way I wish you luck but keep in mind that the DDM minis to get a full set was more or less much the same in cost to get a full set by buying cases... it would take about 3-4 boxes and even then it was not always a full set even with that many cases. Sometimes it took 5-6 full cases to get a full set. Which to me is ridiculous!

To get a full set of Lords of Madness D&D set, I had to open 7 cases at $123 each. That's almost twice the most expensive Pathfinder set (RotRL) at $450 (using the same discount in each case)

I said the reefclaws should be uncommon, not rare. In a case I expect to get around 3 of the same uncommon.

Also, I’m personally I’m not expecting that each and every one of my encounters are handled exclusively by plastic minis. If I have 2 reefclaws out of 3, I’m OK with that.

It seems like they were initially going to offer Sandpoint Devil as an uncommon and now it's a rare, so I'm glad that's the case.

You missed by point.

In D&D Next there will be Djinni and Efreeti. In D&D version 1, 2, 3, 3.5, and Pathfinder there are Djinni and Efreeti. A creature like a DERHII (as cool as they are) can only be found in Pathfinder. And I'm not even sure what AP because I've never seen them before. So should they be uncommon and a Balor should be rare? Not in my opinion.

I guess the tatzlewurms are OK, although I haven't seen them in games yet. If you tell me they're common, this is a good thing because I know I'll be able to get rid of them if I don't want them.

Anyway, that's my feedback on the line.

I agree, maybe the iconics shouldn’t be in “Skull and Shackles”, but they definitely should be in “Legends of Golarion”! They were made for this set! Also, in terms of re-selling and demand, the iconics are EXTREMELY popular, especially for PFS. So if had several iconics randomly in my bricks, I know I’d have several people who would want them (if I had extra). Now I wonder if I'll even get 1 of each for myself... which sucks!

Plus in the re-seller market, players love to buy iconics as singles. Creatures like Moonbeasts are the minis that are going to be sitting collecting dust for re-selling. I'm pretty sure most collectors don't need 3 moonbeasts... they need maybe 1. And they are a CR 11 creature apparently. Which makes them a rare imo.

Anyway, this is an extremely awesome looking set, I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on them!

I would be more inclined to order a case if I knew what was in the case before the street date. It seems rather silly that they expect people to buy something sight unseen without even a set list.

Well, they have been previewing them for a few months on the Friday blogs, with photos. There are a few that haven't been posted here, but follow the link in the post right above yours and you can see each and every mini in the set...it's not done by Paizo, but by a poster here who likes to keep organized on the minis.

True, In_digo.

I usually snag the minis that catch my eye (I'd like that black dragon for example, even though I've a legion of D&D blacks) but I want the Iconics (and the kitten) as a PFS GM. It helps a new player playing an iconic to have the mini that matches the iconic. I have a 'box of Iconics' I keep in my kit.

I mostly pick up singles for use as possible PCs or NPCs, so I suspect this set is going to cost me a lot more than the other ones so far.

We hope, she still hasn't been quite confirmed yet.
Its listed as a gencon preview, and looks to be from the wizkids booth.. if i remeber i will check my photos when i get home to see if i have a better pic that is presented on the site. I don't remember Droogonami being there, i kinda fear that may be the monkey swarm mini, just really blurry.

That's my fear too, but I hope it's unfounded. I really want Droogami.
