I bought two

5/5

GREAT set. Who doesn't need more zombies? Firm plastic, light build so you don't get repetitive strain by moving them around the mat, great details. The red gargoyles are great stand-ins for other infernal critters, while the succubi is the typical batwinged bikini babe standby. I got a half dozen of the red-tabard clerics in the base set, so a couple black repaints make for excellent standard human leftenants and such.

And seriously... when do you not need another 3 (six in two packs!) zombies? These minis are worth way more than ~$3 a piece.

Sigh... looks like our distributor thinks it's supposed to be the same price as the Beginner Box Heroes set. (It's not—that one only has 4 minis, and this one has 6.) Thanks for letting us know!

Ah. That would do it.

You're welcome. Kind-of hated to be "the guy who pointed out the beneficial-to-customers error", but I've got a lawful streak. 8^)

Edit: Plus, you folks are too cool to take advantage of. 8^)

Just wanted to add my +1 to all the good things said about this product - I know it's a bit late, but I just found this now.

I can't stand buying something when I don't know what I'm getting. This seems like Paizo and Wizkids trying something to make us non-random people happy. The quality of the minis so far has been awesome, and at this price, the per-mini cost is way below the after-market price - compare against the cost of a single succubus (and she's not even a sexy red-head!).

I will vote with my wallet and pick this up as soon it is available at my FLGS.

My thanks to Paizo and Wizkids!

I actually really like the monster choices. The Succubus is one of the most popular minis in the set IMO, so giving it a promo paint is a good idea.
Also, having a few zombies that don't look identical will be nice.

I have an extensive collection of DDM. I have been collecting the Paizo mini's and I have to say, I will be buying this set. I like the idea of the RoTL set, but I hope in the future to see AP focused miniatures ready at an APs launch. This line is pretty standard set of miniatures, that GM's will want. Who doesn't want a couple extra succubi or Zombies? The red gargoyle, not as cool nice for a single addition, but it probably will limit to people purchasing multiples. Traditionally I have used gargolye miniatures as statues and such and swapping out repaints to mark the active ones when combat begins. The red one serves great for this.

I look forward to years of collecting these. I just hope the future of Paizo/Wizkids, will result in keeping creature sizes uniform. As well as a resurgence of 5'-10' mounts such as horses. Keep up the good work.

WizKids has set an April 11 street date for this set.

Repaints? I will pass on this product.

I bought the case, so I already have duplicates of most of these, and if if I hadn't? I know how to paint miniatures, if I wanted a red gargoyle, I'd do it myself.

I think this is the first ball I've seen dropped at Paizo in awhile. I understand the cost to make new minis, but weigh that against the profit of selling small bits of plastic at $4 each.

I think a much better idea would be to follow the core idea behind this product and the paper mini products.

Pick an adventure, be it module, adventure path, or PFS Scenario. Then release all the monsters and NPC minis needed to play that scenario in an Encounter Pack such as this. Be they old sculpts from the set we already have, new monsters, or a mix of both.

That way any GM wanting to run a Paizo adventure can pick up the mini pack to complement it, and really help bring his adventures to life! This is already the case with the map packs, I see their subtle placement in paizo adventures all the time.

Why not sell us the game, the adventure, the board, and the playing pieces? We'll always have paper and dice, but everything else can be yours!

This will also encourage Paizo to produce more minis to expand their range. I'd rather see a cleric mini for every core god out their, not just 20 different repaints of the Sarenrite.

The way I see it, this is a separate product line - targetting that vocal subset of customers who were so vehemently opposed to random minis. They can get what they want this way (a set of fully visible minis) although they have to put up with the reduced variety and slightly higher price that non-random minis entails.

The repaint just means that there's some utility for those of us who bought the H&M set. I suspect if Paizo were to try for brand new minis - they'd just face the same barriers they faced when trying to find a way to produce non-randomised minis. ie it would be impossible.

Exactly how I see it and this line. Rather thank "dropped ball" it's serving a set of people who basically called out for it.

I don't see it that way at all. Just because a product doesn't appeal to you doesn't make it a dropped ball. I don't play PFS and I don't buy Pathfinder Society Scenarios. Should we consider that Paizo dropped the ball because I don't care about it?

As has been said, amongst other things this (minor) line caters to the group who would like to know what they're getting. It also caters to buyers who don't feel like repainting things yet might like a few more of a useful mold.

I too have a case but I'm still considering buying one of these. Why? Because a few more zombies never hurt anyone. And the succubus is a cool mold that I wouldn't mind have two (different ones) of. I'll probably not use my discount but instead by this retail, to - in a tiny way - make up for my FLGS's loss of business because I bought my case direct. Maybe I'll get two. Shrug.

The point is that this product has a market. It's not you. Okay. That happens. To call that a business failure is being just a bit self-centered. I try really hard to keep in mind that some good products are things I don't want. Like pirate books, pirate adventure paths, and pirate... anything. Yet I support their creation.

Again, not sure why I am just hearing about this, but very disappointed with the lack of new miniatures... Repaints are, uhm, something I can do myself... the price point is good, fair cost for the minis, although getting 3 zombies is a big let down... 1 zombie, one skeleton, one wraith? that might be a good combination IMHO.

really, if the original sculps and paint jobs were out of print, then I might like this product more. But as it is just repackaged models that I would figure many pathfinder gamers who liked the miniature range already purchased, I think this is a rather sad marketing strategy that I don't understand and that doesn't appeal to me or anyone I game with.

Much rather see money put towards new sculpts that fill in gaps in the range (which there are plenty of) than just repackaged existing models.

- my 2 cents

I think one of the biggest aspects of this product that the detractors aren't picking up on is the direct tie in to the Free RPG Day adventure. This is a huge cross promotion piece that will set Pathfinder apart from the other game lines.

Regardless, this isn't so much a dropped ball as it is a product that may appeal to only a particular subset of its customer base. For example I have no interest in the Distant Worlds Campaign Setting; but that doesn't mean I think Paizo is "wrong" for creating it.

Finally it is important to note that these minis are produced in partnership with WizKids; I imagine there are some compromises that need to be made in order for both companies to feel as though the product is a worthwhile investment.

In a nutshell...if you don't like it then don't buy it. But don't assume that everyone shares you opinion.

I understand the sentiment, but up-thread, Vic and Erik discussed the reasons behind the repaints. In case you do not want to slog through all the posts, their relevant comments are below.

EDIT: As a side note, I have purchased a Heroes & Monsters case and I have already ordered this Encounter pack. I could always use more zombies and the extra (evil) cleric and succubus will not hurt.

Vic Wertz wrote:

We're going to try different things, and see how it goes. Odds are good that the next pack probably won't tie to a specific product, and probably will be a more themed grouping.

Well, the Encounter Packs are actually WizKids' concept... but yes, the concept is to keep the price point down by using all existing molds with new paint jobs.

Erik Mona wrote:

Just to make sure everyone is on the same page, Encounter Packs will pretty much ALWAYS be repaints of existing sculpts. If we could do set packs of new miniatures with no randomness element at all, we would.

Unfortunately, the costs of tooling and sculpting make that impossible, so these sets will not regularly (or even "pretty much ever") include totally new sculpts.

The coupon is more than your Pathfinder Advantage discount, and only the greater of the discounts apply (in this instance).

As an encounter pack I would rather see a themed group as opposed to what another poster has mentioned "simply a group of minis that you say go together."
Would live to see a group of soldiers and a commander figure. Or a group of skeletons and a couple of Skelton champions. The sort of things i need a lot of. I would happy buy several packs of those. Do I need 6 identicle succubi or evil cleric minis. Not really.

Just my 2c

Is this out already? A FLGS (in Germany!) just emailed me that he's already selling it, and not as a pre-order.

This is the first plastic mini product I've been interested in... but that price point...

$19.99 is not all that outrageous for 6 figures in 2012. I'm sure we'll be able to find discounts as low as $14.99 if we're patient.

Just picked these up at the FLGS and they look good.

On the back I see "Download the free Dawn of the Scarlet Sun adventure at paizo.com/modules"

but there is nothing there. Now, I realize that the module doesn't come out until Free RPG Day and it will then most likely be found at that link. But, if someone has the time, it might be a good idea to put something there like "Coming Soon" or "Check back on Free RPG Day" so as to not confuse people.

I can't begin to stress how important this seems.

I just picked up a couple of these at my local shop today, and saw the URL on the back for the free module, which, until today, hadn't heard about.

Visiting the URL, there's absolutely no mention of it, and I had to do a search.

It's bad enough that the package doesn't mention anything about this not being available for another two months, but, even worse, this really really seems like a bad idea to not have any kind of mention at that URL directing visitors to the module in question.

Hey Vic et all... my FLGS's Alliance rep is telling him that this was sold out either before all the preorders were filled, or between preorders and later orders... and that Alliance can't get anymore.... is that true? I would think there would have benn some announcement if that were the case, no?

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

This was a very small run, and Alliance's database confirms that they are indeed sold out.

Just got around to opening my shipment of this set and lo and behold, the cleric is busted. To whom do I address my rant and whine to? :) I went to the wizkids site, but they do not have a selection for this set for replacements.

Greetings Pete,

The best place to bring occurrences like this to our attention is on our Customer Service Forums, however I've seen your inquiry and I'd be glad to help. We have a high quality standard for all of our products, both in their production and in the state they arrive at your location in.

I've set up a replacement in your sidecart to be shipped to you with your next subscription shipment. Once it arrives you should be all set. Feel free to keep the original, this way you can represent him both when hes doing his monologue and after the party gets tired of listening to him.

I'm still looking forward to more Encounter sets like this being released. I hope this wasn't a solo effort!

Same here: I thought this was a cool idea, and I'm hoping it sold well enough to do again.
