I just noticed this last night when I started rolling up my Grippli Vauntguard for our current game. Kind of weird for it to not be included.Fletcher Bates wrote:I am very surprised that the Vauntguard doesn't have Sense Motive as a class skill and have to wonder if this is intentional or not. When we were writing Rogue Glory, we looked at Ranger Traps and said "They're cool, but they feel more like they belong with the Craft (traps) skill than as a central class feature." When we created the Vauntguard, we returned to Ranger Traps and asked ourselves "So, if we were to make traps someone's central class feature, how would we do it?"

The Vauntguard is the result of that thought process. With bits of specialized magic, he can create bombs, homing devices, remote viewing stations, and poisons. He can attach traps to his weapons to make a powerful attack, or set them up for unsuspecting enemies to blunder into. As he levels, he can even combine traps into super-powered versions that makes them a valid tactic no matter how unbearably powerful your opponent is.

Aside from traps, vauntguards are also experts of improvised equipment. Using a pencil as a knife, a crowbar as a grappling hook, or a bit of twine as a complicated tripwire: a vauntguard can do all this and more, and is rarely at a disadvantage, no matter what situation he finds himself in.

Vauntguards are good combatants, but are primarily designed for those who love out-thinking an encounter, rather than just bashing it over the head. This includes everything from undercover infiltration, to luring the enemy into a trap, to charming NPCs into giving up valuable information and more.

Also contained in the PDF are several new mundane and magic items that a vauntguard may use in his travels, including alchemical pellets that can contain a vauntguard trap, magic oil that transforms a creature into a willing ally, and the dreaded golden crossbow, one of the deadliest weapons in existence.
The Vauntguard is, in many ways, a love letter to the idea of player-created traps.
