Divine your future! Lose your shirt! All in one box!

In the Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting, the Harrow™ deck has long been a sacred tool of Varisian fortunetellers. In skilled hands, the Harrow deck can predict crop results, divine the gender of your unborn child, or give hints about your immediate future. In unskilled hands, the Harrow deck is a sacrilegious gambling game—a cutthroat diversion for ruffians in every port to lose their hard-earned fortunes.

Harrow will be featured throughout the second Pathfinder Adventure Path, Curse of the Crimson Throne. At least once in each installment, players may divine their futures with the Harrow deck, and Pathfinder #7 contains an in-depth article about the history of Harrow and its in-game use.

Harrow is also a standalone card game designed by Jason Bulmahn, Mike Selinker, and Teeuwynn Woodruff for use inside or outside the Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting. Harrow is lavishly illustrated by Kyle Hunter, the artist behind Downer: Wandering Monster and Downer: Fool's Errand, the Paizo Comics compilations of Kyle's original Downer comics from Dungeon magazine.

    Harrow contains:
  • One 54-card deck illustrated by Kyle Hunter
  • Five chronicle cards to aid in divination
  • One rulebook with divination rules and card game rules

The deck uses a concept called misalignment where if a good (evil) card is in the evil (good) row, you are supposed to reverse the reading of the card. This really opens up options in the harrow.

I'm thinking of adding another concept that I call discord to my harrows. In this case, if a lawful (chaotic) card is in a chaotic (lawful) position, you put a different spin on the reading. I think it would be either how something in the past will bleed over into the future (lawful in chaotic position) or how something in the future will bring to completion something in the past (chaotic in lawful position). Alternatively, the reading could involve how someone/something of a lawful nature could or did cause a very chaotic result (and vice versa for chaotic card in lawful position) or perhaps, uncharacteristically perform in discord to its nature.

Just a thought....

No. Sadly, Three Dragons Ante card look much better. Both in shape and in the style of the card. Much more believable. The back of the harrow card is exactly like the front of the box. Not at all believable. Seriously, I don't know who tough it was a good idea to have such a back instead of a generic one, but it really was not.

Which is a shame, considering how great the concept is, the utility and fun you can get with using the cards, and all the rules that are related (simple readings, feats to gets special uses, and a prestige class based on it!).

Change it, I'll buy it again. Oh, and make em sturdier while your at it. Easily worth 25-30$ then.

Having returned to a suspended Curse of the Crimson Throne game and really enjoyed the harrow readings, is there any chance of these cards being integrated into another adventure path?

They make a significant appearance in the Pathfinder's Journal portion of Kingmaker 4, this month's Pathfinder adventure path.

Can't tip my hand any further without being spoilerish.

The chance of the Harrow deck being integrated into another AP is, I am happy to say, 100%. Stay tuned!

Very cool I always liked them and have tired to add them in where and when I can.

Awesome :D

How well would these cards work with D&D 4e? Also, what is lost when using these cards outside of the Curse of the Crimson Throne Adventure Path? Thank you.

I'm sure they'd work fine with 4E given a little tinkering (or maybe not even that much; I'm just not all that familiar with the system). You're really just looking at simple bonuses to stat-based abilities. I've used them a few times outside of CotCT, once for a PC and a few times with NPCs. It adds great flavor to any character to not only have him be a harrow reader but to also be able to actually do the spread.

Paizo Employee Creative Director

The harrow cards themselves have no game rules on them, so they can work as a fun in-game sort of fortune-telling type deck of cards for ANY game.

The way we built the cards though assumes six suits (based on the six ability scores) each of which has one card for the nine alignments. Since 4th edition only has about half this number of alignments, that bit of lore won't translate as well, I guess, but that doesn't mean the cards themselves are any less usable. Since the concepts of things like "well organized evil" or "free-wheeling kindness" or "regimented neutrality" and so on can work in any setting.

Now that it has been anounced, do you mean Carrion Crown?

I'm relatively sure we'll be able to find a way to fit the Harrow deck into Carrion Crown. It'd make sense, that's for sure.

That would be great, I would love for their to be expanded rules for them as well. Sorta like plot twist cards, only depending on the set you draw instead of the single card or something.

Are the Harrow cards sized to fit with 2.5" x 3.5" (66mm x 91mm) gaming card protectors? I'm considering using these in an introductory game for kids, where the chance of food/beverage spills is pretty high.

Yes, the Harrow cards are 2.5x3.5 in size, so they should fit in protectors for that size no problem.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to intentionally wear out the cards (of a second set) without completely destroying them. I'll be using them in character for Carrion Crown.

Soak 'em? Wrench them around? Looking for a leathery sort of feel - crinkled too much would just be unwieldy.

I wouldn't even know where to start with these cards, but I'd sure as hell be sure to test whatever is suggested on the white note cards that come with the deck before applying it to all of them.

Soaking paper in tea has worked to a point for me when making old looking notes, but that doesn't seem doable with the cards.

Soaking the cards would act weird with the card coating. I would take some coarse-grit sandpaper, then some fine-grit sandpaper to them, maybe put them in a burlap sack and beat on it a bit with a sledge.

If you don't like the back of the cards, I would get some decorative contact paper (or some Mod Podge and a stack of parchment paper), then trim. If change the backs, though, I would do that first, then weather/age it with the sandpaper.

To give them a worn feel. Take the long part of a pencil and press it on the corner of a car, then pull the card out by that corner maintaining pressure with the pencil. Repeat. Do this for each card multiple times from several directions.

Thanks for the ideas - definitely some good ones! Now to find a pencil and my sand paper...

I got my deck to use in my current adventure. I decided that the DEX is the best STAT that describes it. I do not understand what benefit/hindrance the players gain when a role/true/partial/opposite
card(s) show up. Is there an effect (+1/-1 to something)? Or is it just to give flavour and a more qualitative approach to the adventure? If my last question is true, then I do not see the point of the importance of getting a role card.

Also, not clear on this:
- If AP module is based on DEX (DM choice), and a PC asks a question and I decide it belongs to CHA (and his role card shows on the spread) how would this have an effect. Will the PC not get the benefit (if any).

I hope I am missing something.

I could not see anything on this thread that addresses my questions :6

The art is beautiful but the backs on those cards really break the immersion for me. Was it really necessary to print the "Harrow Deck" label on the back of each one? I was hoping for something that would actually look like a Harrow Deck that you would find on the world.

I keep hoping for a 'deluxe version' like my old tarroka deck.

It's available again. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Does that mean it was a computer glitch and you didnt really go out of stock? Or that you've done a second print run?

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

We weren't really out of stock. It's still the original print run.

Cheers.

Are the instructions available anywhere else? I can't find mind, and wouldn't mind trying a reading or playing the game at some point.

EDIT: And saw the download link after pressing "submit post." Sorry everyone! Nothing to see here..move along...

Not a problem, I was just about to point out a link to the downloads!

Will these cards become available again? I gave my set away a year ago and now want to run Curse of the Crimson Throne. I can mock up a set with poker cards as a base, but I'd rather just pay for a new set.

I tried ordering a set through my LGS and they said this was long gone. If/when it's available again, I'd love to get my hands on them.

So what is the story with the Harrow Deck? The product page says unavailible but my friend ordered a set about 2 weeks ago and the product page had the price.

Any big plans to make changes?
I've noticed that some folks don't like the back of the cards, I know I love the art for the front of the cards and while the art for the back is fine for the card box, now that others have mentioned the it back is not great for immersion.

I'd still like an edition with a back like in the illustration in the Inner Sea World Guide.

The artwork on the faces will remain the same, and the card backs will be changed... and that's all I'm saying for now!

Very cool, glad to hear the back is going to be changed a bit. Hope they look more like what real cards would look like. I also would love to see them being bigger cards like most Tarrot cards are done. Finally I am still hoping for rules to let you do plot twist, or flash back type things rules for these based on the combo of cards drawn. Yes I know I can do that and I do, but having printed rules to start from would help. :)

So where are they and why can't I buy them yet? :)

First two questions. Anyone out there have a copy of the original harrow deck. And any word when the updated version is coming out. Will it be out in time for gen con.

Pathfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

Question One: Yes, I do.

Question Two: With GenCon so close I don't think it's going to fall under the 'several months' that Vic was talking about. So almost certainly no.

Yay! A new set. My players love these.

Anyone willing to part with the original harrow deck.

Very cool that this is getting a new run. I've been searching for ages and haven't found one anywhere, even the six LGS in my area. I even chanced B&N and Amazon, although Amazon has people selling them for more than a grand, which makes absolutely no sense to me.

Still, I'd like to have a deck, it's kinda sad that I apparently waited a month too long to get my hands on one.

What you're seeing is the result of poorly written pricing robots that don't properly deal with products that are not readily available. (I don't know why Amazon doesn't prohibit their sellers from using those; I totally would.)

Nobody is *buying* them for that price.
