A Pathfinder Society Special designed for levels 3-7.

A group of Pathfinders recently delved into the ruins of Bonekeep, a siege fortress destroyed centuries ago. There they discovered not only terrifying threats but also extraordinary treasures. Warded by the magic of a senior Pathfinder, the party must explore as much of Bonekeep as they can before the spell dissipates, lest they too are enslaved by the enchanted maze that looks hauntingly more familiar with each discovery.

Written by Jason Bulmahn.

Note: Ruins of Bonekeep—Level 2: Maze to the Mind Slave is a limited release scenario. It may be ran at any time by a 4- or 5-star GM or a Venture-Officer at any time. This scenario may also be run by anybody at any convention. To inquire about access to this scenario, refer to the Organized Play Convention Support Policy.

Brings out the worst in GMs and players

1/5

The main reason I dislike this scenario is that it brings out the worst in GMs and players, and has the ability to suck the fun out of Pathfinder.

Bonekeep was created to challenge players and allow them to power game without regret, yet GMs get ornery when you that. They dislike it when they can’t kill you within the scope of a killer scenario. When they can’t kill you legitimately, they cheat to do so. For example, even though we were supposed to be running subtier 3-4, there were instances where he used subtier 6-7 (because he felt we were gaming the system, even though we barely succeeded in part 1). With help after the scenario, I actually created an entire document on how my GM cheated in over 30 ways. Unbelievable.

Bonekeep 2 is a killer scenario but unlike part 1, I didn’t find this one as creative or interesting.

There's a good chance your character could have a permanent disability by playing this scenario, successful or not (mine does). This is the part that most players dislike.

The worst part is that unlike part 1, there are a lot of sections that are open to GM interpretation, that allow GMs to be complete cheaters. If you want to have any chance of completing this scenario on time, you can’t argue, your biggest enemy is the clock.

Although we were successful (one of the very few groups that were 100% successful at Gencon), it created an un-fun environment for the players both inside and outside of the game, which ultimately resulted in a 2 year hiatus for an entire PFS group.

The GM (who in other circumstances is probably really great) was reported and got a black mark against his name.

Sure, we ran both parts of Bonekeep 1 and 2 100% successfully, gaining all the boons, without a single player death. Having said that, playing this scenario we still "lost".

Not recommended.

Punished for trying this scenario

1/5

The scenario itself is very challenging and fun to play. However, there is no 4 player adjustment and the negative boon at the end is a punishment for anyone who wants to play this scenario. I will never suggest to anyone to try that scenario, never ever, with their PFS characters.

Not having a 4 player adjustment for lower level parties is a killer, and the fights are way too challenging if you are forced to play up because the APL ends up between two subtiers (we ended up at APL 5 with a party of 7; most of us were level 4 and 5 and thus we were forced to play in subtier 6-7, which resulted in the very fast death of all the level 4s in our party). I strongly suggest that your party APL ends up in the subtier you are looking to fight in (APL 7 for subtier 6-7, APL 4 for subtier 3-4, etc.), otherwise you'll have a really hard time.

As for the rewards, the negative boon that you get at the end itself just for trying out the scenario (and probably failing at it; it is a special one after all which calls for a "You will die" disclosure at the beginning) is enough of a reason to NEVER play this one. Of course, if you manage to complete it, then it's all good, but in all likeliness you will fail.

I say again, NEVER play this scenario if you care about your PFS character; you are being punished for trying it out.

Awesome

4/5

Anyone who played Bonekeep part 1 knew that part 2 would follow suit, and it does. Excellent challenging scenario that rewards the prepared, and punishes others. If there is one element I dislike in this one it is how the boons played out.

Negative boon:
This is gained from entering the scenario, and is a huge negative for your PC for the remainder of their career, with no chance to not receive it. Not even a will save to negate when you receive the damage or anything

actual boon:
You can only get this if you 100% the dungeon, and finish with time to spare. We finished with approximately 1 minute left and were unable to complete a simple puzzle to receive it. Poor design, and I liked the first much more, in that it was much more obtainable

Stinker

1/5

Is it exciting? Yes. Is it challenging? Yes. Will people die? Yes. Were you warned? Yes.
Did you have fun playing? Yes. All great. Right up until the time came to collect the promised "Great Reward" for the extraordinary risks taken. Instead it delivers an unavoidable disablility that could kill other peoples characters - and you get it just for playing. If the disability was avoidable, or even if it only hurt your character but you were told before hand, this would have more stars. As it is, it just sucks. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I too would like to know this!! When is this going to be available along with part 1?

Grand Lodge

Any news???

It just came out a little over 2 months ago as a special... Even if it was available as soon as the annual GenCon specials it would be next August at the earliest.

They still haven't released a release date for level 1 and that came out in January...

The release of The Ruins of Bonekeep, Part 2 will likely coincide with the release of The Ruins of Bonekeep, Part 1. As noted in the latter's product thread, the exact date for this has not yet been disclosed.

Scarab Sages

I played the first one at the last PaizoCon with a character who is now 7th level.

Do these two need to be played together, for a boon or something, or can they be played with different characters?

Several rewards on the Chronicle sheets are thematically related, but there's nothing on the Chronicle sheet for Part 2 that requires one to have played Part 1 to earn it.

That's good, as the character who played Part I has long since leveled out of tier.

any updates on when we can run this at our local FLGS ? or home games ?

Grand Lodge Premier Event Coordinator

This scenario continues to be a convention exclusive requiring 50+ tables for the event to qualify and probably will stay that way for the time being.

If Bonekeep I is the template, then BKII will become the annual exclusive scenario in February of 2015, after which it can be run at any event (no table minimum), but would require a 4/5-star GM or VO to run it.

This is, of course, speculation, YMMV

I have a question about Room 2

I have asked in the GM Forums as well but thus far no real answer either way

spoiler:
was in a discussion the other day that brought me back to this encounter with a couple questions about it Specifically regarding Resist energy or Evasion

if that thing goes off

do the PC's make 7 saves ... or 1 I can see evidence for both sides of it

I looked at the text in the Scenario and it reads like its 1 save since only 1 damage value listed (1 for each tier)

when it comes to resist energy that could be a big deal (10 or 20 off each explosion)

or evasion ... failing against 2 but saving the other 5

TBH without resist energy or evasion it wont matter ... even 1/2 damage is enough to kill almost any PC there is at that level

any news on if/when this drops to four stars? Just did my first bonekeep GMing Monday, 4 rooms, 1 fatality.

"Soon.™"

As per Mr. Brock on 3/17, IT is working on the necessary database update for this to become an exclusive.

How soon is now?

I have a question about the statblocks in Room 2:

Spoiler:
In the 6-7 subtier, the Ratfolk are listed to have a +4 shield bonus to AC. What gives them that? They're fighting with two weapons or spellcasting, with the only defensive spell being Mage Armor

@The Seldon Plan:
It looks like the stat blocks assume that they cast the shield that they have prepped.

Is this one ever going public?

Unlikely to ever go public. The idea of these are for 4+star GM or VO exclusives. I assume that if your account is registered as 4+star GM or VO, then it will be available to you. Another option would be that if you are eligible and cannot access it, contact your VC and I am sure he or she will fix things up.

Hope not... I'm getting to run this for the first time tomorrow. Justy hoping to run high tier
