I really love talking with NPCs, but after playing Matrimony and Merchant, the mechenics just too repeative, nothing new... and the story itself not as interesting as Merchant's Wake, you guys go to a dinner party to make friends of great nobles, then goes into a fight, very expectible.

Still recommend for RP players, good but not as shining after playing many similar PFS modules.

Combats were fun and challenging, social encounters were well done. Played low tier with Slayer 5 (me), Cavalier 5, Swashbuckler 7, Ranger 6, Ninja 6.

Gameplay - Influence: The influence mechanic is pretty nearly identical to that of the Blakros Matrimony. There is a decent array of skill checks that can be used to earn favor, obviously with Diplomacy being the most important by a long shot. I had my Cha 5 Tiefling (I love bringing him to these) and there were still a few places for him to apply his skills. The only issue I always run into on these is that when you are influencing people towards a single goal, and fail your first couple checks, anyone who comes back to the same person to try again usually ends up rehashing the same argument, or just saying 'I roll diplomacy.' Even good roleplayers run out of ways to rephrase the question. Minor nitpick, thoroughly enjoyed this section anyways. (9/10)

Gameplay - Investigation: Without getting into any spoilery details, the investigation work is interwoven with the talking parts. It seems to have a pretty distinct separation from the influence parts, and some work could probably be done to intermix them a bit more in future scenarios of this type. Again, a very minor nitpick. (9/10)

Gameplay - Combat: Solid encounters. While I wouldn't say they had a major threat of killing a PC, they certainly had a threat of causing the group to expend more consumables than usual, and threat of jeopardizing the primary or secondary mission objectives. The amount of combats and quality certainly lets your Barbarians shine. The encounter setups weren't particularly interesting as there were no major hazards, but not everything needs to take place within another subsystem, so I'll give the combats a full score. (10/10)

Story: My biggest complaint is still fairly minor, but something that might be taken into account moving forward. The ostensible reason for the PCs to be at the party is to chat it up with the nobles and show that Pathfinders are cool dudes. Nothing will go wrong, just influence people. We promise. In some ways it feels a bit comical, as though someone just loudly proclaimed "I do hope nothing happens to spoil this fancy dinner party!" followed by the obviously fully expected ambush. Several members of my party had previously played in the Blakros Matrimony and Merchant's Wake, and of course being invited to a party again go into full investigation mode looking for all points of entrance, odd acting characters, and formulating defense plans for the inevitable case that security fails. At a certain point I think it may be a better idea to include some perceived threats in the briefing so the party's paranoia seems a little less idiotic and we don't need to pretend to be surprised when the baddies show up. Admit it, everyone knows it's going to happen. (8/10)

Duration: Depending on how all of the skill checks and exploration go I could see the scenario running long, but we finished in about 4.5 hours with full marks. A couple of the enemies can possibly bring more into the fray, and our party prevented that from happening. If it wasn't for that I could see the scenario take much longer as well. (8/10)

Final score: 44/50 (4.5/5 stars?)

Lessons learned from Immortal Conundrum, Among the Living and Blakros Matrimony. In particular, this scenario gracefully dances around frustrations about being allowed to carry weaponry;

[Spoiler omitted]

Also, because you can influence NPCs both with traditional social skills but also with other skills relating to their fields of interest, most PCs will get a chance to contribute in a meaningful way to that.

I played this adventure with my investigator, who's been around quite a bit, and already had connections to some of the people present. And he's a Blakros. So my stats for this were through the roof. The paladin was effective as well of course. (And if you look at the cover of the scenario, you can guess having a paladin along might be nice...) The rogue/warpriest/alchemist gaggle in our party had a bit harder time influencing NPCs, but they did good groundwork ferreting out information about them, which then allowed us to more effectively diplomacize them. As a weird team we were quite effective at this.

What I also liked is that by now you're considered serious adventurers; you're not wannabes anymore, you've probably beaten some demons before so you're actually a credible person here.

Also very nice is that the NPCs here have sufficient depth and talking points that there is actually quite a bit to talk about; if you figure out who and what you are you can come up with much more compelling arguments than "look closely at this D20". This much conversational material is much harder to find in other scenarios, I think.

And then there's the investigation part of things. The investigation is actually challenging; you have to think and work to find clues and get an idea of what is going on. Depending on how well you do at that you can prevent some of the damage the bad guys are hoping to do.

As for the combat: just because this is a social scenario doesn't mean the combats are just some stuff added in. These are pretty vicious monsters; I'd say the combats are slightly above average and the final fight is significantly above-average in danger. Our saving grace was that because I fought the main boss alone (it already dropped a PC) it wasn't using its pretty horrific stuff on the other PCs or we'd have been toast. That and a lucky hit/iterative crit round where my investigator longspeared for 120 damage; didn't even give the boss a chance to switch from trying to kill me to hoping to escape.

The take away message: this is a scenario that will challenge you socially, with investigation, and with serious combat.

It also runs WAY long; we had no big digressions or breaks but it was still 8 hours. Totally worth it.

Pathfinder Society Scenario #5–03: The Hellknight's Feast (PFRPG) PDF

It's clear that this scenario is the result of Paizo gaining experience in writing these "social occasion with inevitable surprise attack" stories. Still, if you liked that one you will probably like this one too. It has several of the same characters and uses the same mechanics and style as The Blackros Matrimony. If you haven't played either of these adventures, both are heavy on RP with some tough combats. The combats in this one are even more annoying than The Blackros Matrimony as they involve a lot of enchantment/charm effects, paralyzation and level draining. One fight can be genuinely scary, and while the boss fight isn't especially deadly, it can be easy to fail the secondary objective. This one also railroads you a bit more than The Blackros Matrimony.

I would rate the table I played at 5 stars, but I could see it going horribly wrong with a group of players who were not expecting this kind of scenario, or a GM that was not well prepared. I suppose that is true for all mods, but it particularly true for this one.

The players need to know what they are getting into. To his credit, the writer of the mod seems to have made an effort not to make all the social rolls come down to seventeen Diplomacy checks, but you still need some talky characters to make this work. The group I played with had the skills pretty well covered, but still ran into a wall by missing one . . .
[Spoiler omitted]
We also nearly got dangerously derailed by a barbarian who wanted to take his animal companion into the party. It's a fancy dinner - dinosaurs not invited! You need to get player buy in that this is not your typical dungeon crawl, where you can bash heads and throw around fireballs indiscriminately. I like this kind of game, but it's not everyone's idea of a good time.

The GM needs to be well prepared to make this game work. This is not a game you can say, in the middle of a con, we need one more table and just shove the mod into the GMs hand and expect things to run smoothly. It's all about knowing the different NPCs' personalities and how they interact with each other, and that takes some study ahead of time. It also helps if you have a DM who is comfortable ad libbing NPCs who are not fully fleshed out just in case the PCs decide they need to talk to the pastry chef, or assistant butler #3. I thought our GM did a great job with this, and it made the mod very entertaining, but again it's something that is going to vary from table to table.

So, in short, I loved playing this mod but I can understand why some people are giving it 2 stars and some people are giving it 5.

Pathfinder Society Scenario #5–03: The Hellknight's Feast (PFRPG) PDF

It is hard to give this mod a specific star rating because it will vary so much from table to table.

The group I played with had the skills pretty well covered, but still ran into a wall by missing one . . .

Overall, this was a really fun scenario. Has a great mix of roleplay (supported with skills to make it matter), investigation, and combat. The last fight can be brutal for unprepared parties, but not (in my opinion) inappropriately so.

My one real criticism would be length. Both the roleplay/skill challenges and also the last fight can go really long. My table took about 7 hours. That can be a real issue. The roleplay/skill part can be sped up if you cut down to brass tacks, but then you've lost the primary meat of what this scenario's about.

Three of my PCs had played in Blakros Matrimony with the same characters, so they were familiar with the influencing subsystem from that scenario. I played in Blakros Matrimony but haven’t run it or read it, so I can’t speak to the particulars of how the influencing subsystems compare, but at a glance they were similar, but I found the setting clearer and the transitions between scenes smoother. In particular, I appreciated having the three word summaries of each NPC’s personality. Also, this has been clarified by other reviews but it bears repeating: you CAN use Bluff and Diplomacy to interact with any and all NPCs. The listed skills are in addition to Bluff and Diplomacy and specific to each NPC.

Three of my players chose to fully engage in the roleplaying, going back and forth two or three times with the NPCs they were trying to influence at each opportunity. The fourth was content to interact minimally and roll the dice. Both styles are fully supported and allow RP inclined players to indulge without forcing RP uninclined players into uncomfortable position. The influencing NPCs does dominate the first portion of the scenario, but there are a few investigation interludes and a combat to break things up.

At one point, I became nervous that my players would be disappointed by the scenario’s end game:
[Spoiler omitted]

The scenario runs long, as often happens with scenarios that involve sandbox exploration, and lots of open-ended roleplaying. Thanks to the wizard succeeding by more than 5 multiple times, my group didn’t have to influence as often and the scenario still went long. Luckily we still had time for the optional encounter, as it felt important to the flow of the scenario.

The final encounter was extremely difficult, with a wide variety of tricks in the villains’ bag. It made things that much more interesting, particularly because of the number of uncommon monsters used. I would have assumed the scenario requires a very specific party balance to accommodate the mix of skill demands and unusual opponents, but my group was hardly an optimal party and yet they both succeeded handily and had fun doing it.

Pathfinder Society Scenario #5–03: The Hellknight's Feast (PFRPG) PDF

I ran this scenario at subtier 5-6 for a group of 4 players (wizard 8, witch 6, cleric 6, rogue 6).
The scenario is divided into a diplomatic session with unusual rules (an interesting idea) and a more traditional battle/exploration. The diplomacy was an attempt to win over a set of VIPs to aid the crusade against the demons, using a limited number of attempts. My high Diplomacy skill was nearly useless because I was told to use Kn:Local instead, which I didn't have, and of all people it was our fighter who actually accomplished anything. I liked the idea of being able to spend turns probing for an advantage on future conversations, but these were handled such that one PC couldn't use another's advantage or really play off one NPC against another despite them having rivalries. It didn't help our enjoyment that the diplomacy session started with a non-interactive introduction to half a dozen unlikeable VIPs.

The battle session then involved a ridiculously hard boss for our six-member party at levels 6-8, even with the GM removing two extra demons to compensate for the odd way this season handles tiers. Result: one PC died, one nearly died, everyone else fled and failed the mission. One of the boss' powers had a DC 25 save to avoid devastating harm, making it a near-automatic GM victory.with one encounter skipped.

So, it seemed like flaws in this adventure's design limited my enjoyment. The group really got into their characters during the social challenges, which provided for plenty of laughs. I like that each NPC is given a brief description of his or her personality, but I still occasionally found it challenging to come up with in-character responses to what the PCs had to say.

In response to a previous reviewer's complaint that traditional social skills don't help with passing the influence checks, it's explained right before the NPC profiles that PCs can use (in addition to the specified skill) Bluff or Diplomacy. Thus, my group was able to eventually win over everyone.

The combat encounters were challenging without being overwhelming, but we took issue with some of the listed strategies, namely using Suggestion to make a PC drop his weapon and shield. Aside from not being able to drop a shield, a player made the case that laying down arms in the middle of a fight with demons would be "obviously harmful" and therefore not a valid use of Suggestion.

Overall, I really liked this scenario, even if it was a bit rough around the edges. If your group enjoys roleplaying (beyond just killing things), definitely give it a try.

Pathfinder Society Scenario #5–03: The Hellknight's Feast (PFRPG) PDF

I ran this scenario last week for a great group of players and had a lot of fun. This is supposed to be a party with lots of social interaction. The NPCs and the environment are nicely detailed and the combats not overly deadly. But the author has thrown out the rule book and substituted their own ideas without explanation There are skills in Pathfinder for social interaction – diplomacy, intimidate, bluff and sense motive being the main ones. For the skill challenges the author has effectively said that those skills are useless and instead they substituted another extremely limited set of skills. This would be fine if the skills listed were provided as an alternative but they are not. As written, a PC that can hit 50 on diplomacy and sense motive is not only going to fail to influence people, they are not going to know why they failed. This scenario needs an errata to include the possibility for people with good social interaction skills to succeed. If run as written most groups will fail both the primary and secondary goals.

Pathfinder Society Scenario #5–03: The Hellknight's Feast (PFRPG) PDF

I liked the idea of this scenario but found it incredibly frustrating in its execution and the players found it extremely frustrating when I ran it.
One piece of advice that I have to make the experience even better would be for the GM to explain the core mechanic for the interaction a bit at the beginning.
