A worthwhile investment for water themed campaigns

Paint jobs getting REALLY bad

2/5

When Paizo first started putting out pre painted minis back in the heroes and monsters day the sculpt and the paint jobs were amazing "for a pre painted plastic". Sadly with each new set releaed the paint quality keeps going down very quickly. I have so far bought complete sealed cases of every set (not directly from Paizo because they charge WAY too much) and each set gets worse. It has become REALLY bad with the release of the goblins case, the undead case, and now this Skull & Shackles case has HORRIBLE paint. The sculpts have always been really nice. The paint is so sloppy it looks like it is being done by overseas child labor. and even the parts that are paint stamped on, like the eyes are all over the place. The eyes on most of my figures are either way down on their cheeks or up on their foreheads, very few actually have the eyes painted where they should be. If you are going to charge the insanely high amount of $400 a case then you should get your paint quality back to the level it was with heros and monsters and stop letting it get worse and worse with every new set.

Decent, but not a step forward

3/5

There are many good things in this set: aquatic minis, fantastic NPCs or monsters from the AP... yet I couldn't helpp but being slightly disappointed.

Firstly, I was disappointed by the number of missing/broken minis inside the boosters. Out of a case, I had one completely missing, one with a severed head (poor Arronax Endymion!), and one stirge... I mean bloodbug who wanted to fly off its base... and managed to do it. Overall, resilience of the minis is still somehow lacking.

Secondly, I didn't really appreciate the paintjob of one of the most iconic character of the AP: Kerdak Bonefist's face is... very basic, and sadly unexpressive. I think my biggest grudge is how they painted the eyes. If you compare them to the previous sets and the top-notch jobs made on minis like Xin, or Sorchen, you'll probably find the face painting of S&S minis lacking as I do.

On the other hand, the set includes some great minis. My favourites include the Sea Troll (a worthy cousin of the enormous Troll Champion of the SS set), the Daughter of Imerta (sadly too rare for my taste as a S&S GM), or Ambrose Kroop. However, my disappointment also resides within the fact that there are too few minis that really got me carried away, as opposed to the two previous sets. WizKids really outdid themselves for RotRL and SS, but this set - while decent - is a bit underwhelming despite my love for the AP itself and pirates in general.

Disappointed by number of missing minis

2/5

I wrote a longer post, but then the store threw an error when I tried to post it. I'll make it short and sweet this time: I was missing five minis from having a complete set (38, 39, 47, 50, 51). I have two broken minis. Several minis feel like they will probably fall off of their stand in the near future. I would give the paint/sculpt job an average of 4 out of 5. Some of them get a 5 for being awesome, while some get a 2. (What is wrong with Seltyiel's face?) I'm questioning if I want to continue my subscription since $400 to be missing so many and have such quality issues seems like a bad investment. Looking at the price for singles for previous sets, I'm guessing I will have to pay yet another $40 to complete my set.

Very Good, but not Great!

4/5

Content:

• Mostly liked the mix of rank-and-file figures with unique characters/monsters Brineblood Queen only one, but had 6 Chellish marines. However, rarity based on the adventure could have been better. For example, got 3 Shimerae (only one encountered in the AP), but got only one Daughter of Imerta (encounter 6 in the AP). I’m pretty sure Wiz Kids decides the mix based on “coolness,” but wish Paizo could have more input into that.
• I did get a full set in the one case (batting a thousand so far…)!
• Just as always, I don’t need a bunch of “character” figs, I prefer more “monsters” in the mix. However, in this instance, because I don’t have a lot of generic pirate minis, I will make an exception.
• As far as the choices that were made for inclusion into this set I would rate it 5 out of 5 stars. Excellent!
• It’s probably just me, but I don’t want any more dragons for the incentive figure for a while. The rune giant was the best so far. More stuff like that!

Quality:

• Overall, the paint jobs were good, about a 4 out of 5 stars, but a few of the medium figures were terrible (iconic gunslinger the worst)!
• Really enjoyed the tattoos on Isabella Locke (how did they do that?)!
• Sculpts were very good for the most part, but I still wish they were more dynamic (great examples are; the wererat, sentinel devil, Tessa Fairwind, Jakaw Razorbeak, giant wasp, seacat, Cyclops, The Eel, iconic magus, Isabella Locke, Daughter of Imerta, cannon golem and Captain Riptooth).
• My favorite figures for overall quality (sculpt, paint and impact) were; the wererat, Kerdak Bonefist, giant wasp, sea troll (my absolute favorite of the set), drowning devil, duppy, The Matron, Daughter of Imerta, cannon golem and Brinebones of course!
• I only had one damaged figure in the case (the hammerhead) and it had broken where the clear stand met the base.

Thoughts:

• Second best set, IMHO, after RotRL.
• As I said before, I may be in the minority, but I would like to see something other than a dragon as the incentive figure… Just sayin’.
• More monsters, less human/demi-human figures. Save the high quality sculpts and paints for a set like Beginner Box Heroes.
• Why no other sealife (giant crab, octopi, squid, mermen, locathah, charda, etc.)?
• MORE HUGE FIGS!!!!!!!!!

I had three but I find that it only happens when I am careless. How you take them out of the packaging has a lot to do with breakage. And they will all be easy to fix.

This was my experience with Shattered Star. I only had one figure broken before I opened the case. I broke two more pulling them out roughly. They'll fix right up with a bit of super glue.

Mine shipped today! Sooooooooon.

I ordered 2 cases, there were no broken figures, I accidentally broke 2 when removing them from the plastic casing however.

So it seems so far I am having problems with figures staying on their bases, seems like a glue problem. Though I noticed the plastic is much softer then other sets and less likely to break on dropping and traveling which I am happy about.

What I have noticed about removing the minis is: instead of grabbing the figure and pulling it out - it is better to push the base from behind the plastic. Usually if I pull one off the base or partial off the base it is because I am grabbing the figure and pulling on it - I get anxious and forget sometimes.

Liberty's Edge

Only break was the Cannon golem, for the first time I didn't get a complete set; missing Rosie.

This set is fantastically detailed and just awesome. The improving quality of the line is a big reason why I continue to invest.

The Exchange

i just opened a brick, and everything was intact. the iconic magus figure has a terrible paintjob however- the skin tone on his chest is too thin(showing some of the color of the black plastic beneath), and on his face extends onto his hair. i don't know if this is a problem with this individual figure, or with the magus figure in general.

in several cases, weapons are bent at odd angles. this is most noticeable with the sea-devil's trident, which is at a 45 degree angle away from the shaft of the weapon. not surprising, but a little disappointing.

the translucent blue plastic held in the hands of two female casters is a nice touch.

Like Shem said, push from behind. I did that and didn't have any new breaks. I did have one figure break in transit, the Daughter of Imerta. IT was clear her base did not get set into the package right and then when the figure was tightened down it snapped the clear peg in half. The figure itself was fine so I am going to try and fix the base. But it was not the fault of the figure, but rather the person or machine that packed them.

I bought a single booster, and two out of the four minis were broken.

*sigh*

I worry that WizKids is just churning these out now with less quality control than before.

Also, I've noticed that the wings of my dragon don't really want to stay in place. They tend to wiggle free if the mini is moved too much. I might glue those in place as well.

Unlike the Blue Dragon, the wings on the Skeletal Dragon don't fit well at all. I think they are really meant to be glued in. At least I hope so, otherwise the mold was a very poor job.

But, I was told by others as well that the wings are meant to be glued in.

Steve,

To explain a little more on what I meant from my post, I received three Skeletal Dragons and the left wing on all of them fit relatively well. It seems the right wing did not fit well at all on any of them. One was loose and wouldn't stay in if you picked it up and the other two you really needed to move and twist the wing a bit to get them to stay in.

But with all three, it did not take much for the wings to fall out. Others on the forums have told me that the extra pieces that have come with the gagantuans are meant to be glued in. If that is the case, then that is how it is.

But it's just from my experience, with the exception of one Blue Dragon wing, the pieces for the other gargantuans had good, tight fights, which gave me the impression you could just plug them in and not have to glue. I figured the one Blue Dragon wing was just an anomaly and why I was so disappointed when putting my Skeletal Dragons wings together.

However, I guess from now on I'll just have to glue all the additional components to the base unit for future gargantuans. To be honest, I wish they could just send them to us in one piece, or one piece in the extent that 'they' glue them together, instead of breaking them apart so the mini fits in their 'one box fits all' for the gargantuans. I would be willing to pay more if they made the box around the one-piece mini, not the other way around.

Yeah, i understood and I'm with you 100%. I'd presumed they were supposed to just "click" together as the previous ones have.

However silly it sounds, I'm crap at stuff like that. Even simple crafty stuff takes me ages, makes me grumpy and looks lousy (or doesn't last). It's not the end of the world but its disappointing. :(

Yeah, I hear you Steve. I'm the same way on crafting things, even for simple things like plugging and gluing wings in like this. I can do it, but it takes me longer.

The other thing that concerns me a bit when the minis come in pieces like this, each glue point is a weak spot and if the wings (or component) doesn't fit in well already, how well will it hold up after time?

Granted, WizKids would need to glue it themselves as they cannot create detailed sculpts like this with one mold. However, they have more effective means to glue the pieces together and will be a lot stronger, than using super glue at home. Although maybe I should use Gorilla glue instead.

The Blue was very solid. The skeletal dragon doesn't have as much workable area/structure as did the Blue, and so the large wings are supported by small, square peg-and-socket joints. The joints have to support tendency of those wings to rotate. IIRC, the Blue had larger, more rectangular pegs and was able to support the wings better.

It's not much to strengthen them with a small dab of glue.

I had no breakages and everything looked great EXCEPT Seltyiel the magus. His face only has two tiny eyes and the rest of it looks like it melted into his chest. Apparently he forgot to exclude himself from a fireball?

I had two "breakages" in my case. A Sea Cat broke free at the base and one Sentenal Devil also broke free at the base. Both should be easy fixes with some glue. Much better than the Shattered Star set (for me at least).

I had a few miniatures that were broken off the bases but none of the actual figures were damaged so it was easy to fix with glue.

The wings on my skeletal dragon fit in just fine and hold tight without needing glue.

This is the first set where I really noticed the botched paint jobs. In the past there have been slight touches but this one I have several minis that were major brush error.

I had just the reverse on my blue...one wing falls out easily, but both skeletal dragon wings stay in well.

I had a broken fig as well. three others snapped off their bases as I was pulling them out of the plastic, including one of the sharks. They really stay in well. I notice there's a mix of soft and stiff plastic in the mix. some weapons are real flexible, like the D&D minis.

So, i have a friend who bought 2 bricks from his local store, he liked the set and went back and bought another brick. Every single figure in the 3rd brick was the same in the first brick. He's pissed, and I would be too, what happened? There wasn't enough money in the budget to mix up the boosters in the brick? I didn't notice this in the other sets.

Did your friend ask for bricks from the same case?

Where Paizo can give a high assurance (although no guarantee) that you will get a good distribution of minis, they can only do so with a case. I believe the last percentage I heard was around 93% chance that you will get one of each mini in a case.

Your friend most likely got bricks from two different cases, and unfortunately grabbed the same packaged bricks from both cases.

If you want a very good chance of getting a diverse distribution of minis, it is recommended you buy the minis by the case. Or if you don't want to buy a case, ask your local store to open up a sealed case where you can take out two bricks.

The Exchange

93%? I've bought a case of every release (three of the first release) and have always completed a set. 93% is a lot lower than I would have guessed (and I would be disappointed if I bought a case and didn't get a complete set).

93% is a number they threw out a couple of sets ago. I believe before that it was higher.

But believe me, even if it is still 93%, that is extremely high. Most sets I've seen reported online have been complete, I think I've only seen a few indicate they missing minis, and it's usually only one, maybe two.

The DDM days...you would be lucky to get a complete set if you bought 4-5 cases.

I did not get both of my cases together. On my second case I did not have any breakage. I also had to glue the wings on my dragons.

When I said push the minis out from the back - I really meant push the base out from the back and not the actual mini. And if you pull the mini out you will get breakage.

I was more careful on my second case and did not pull one even partially off the base.

My first case I pulled three off their bases. I glued them and they are fine.

the 93% figure was on the Runelords set. I believe that the shattered star + 55 mini config is supposed to gert you everything bar human error.

Sczarni

93% was for a 60 piece set, (runelords) I think it was supposed to be 97% for the 55 peice sets (mostly because they can't guarantee due to human error)

as for roysier's post, the distributors are being dumb and not always shipping sealed cases this time. We ordered 16 bricks from Alliance (the shops can't order by the case through them according to our rep) and got one sealed case and 12 loose bricks.

I just unpacked my case last night. Two boosters were missing a miniature. The plastic looks crumpled, so I assume they fell out during packaging.

That said, I was still able to get a full set. :)

Is the Gargantuan Skeletal Dragon for this set no long available? I was going to order it and can't find it on the site anywhere.

Was that the case incentive for the Skull & Shackles set? If so, there was most likely only a very short time window in which you could have bought it from Paizo without buying a whole case of random minis. They are probably sold out of it by now.

At this point, your only recourse would be a secondary seller like Ebay or the dealer's room at a gaming convention.
