My first impressions of Ultimate Campaign were pretty positive, and now that I've had time to read through the whole thing, I can honestly say that this is a must-have for any campaign that goes beyond the scope of the dungeon crawl. If you're looking for guidelines and rules for all the things that happen outside the dungeon itself, this book is an incredible buy.

Book- Ultimate Campaign

TL;DR- Tables and Rules Everywhere!-83%

Basics- Ultimate Campaign focuses on the rules around the rest of the Pathfinder RPG. This book is more "meta" then most books. The book starts with a chapter on how to make characters; not how to make stats, but how to build a story into your characters. Next the book gives a chapter on what you can do in your down time with ideas ranging from building businesses to creating organizations. After that is a chapter on different rules systems covering ideas such as bargaining to taxation in your game. The final chapter is how to build a kingdom and mass combat.

Mechanics or “Crunch”-This book is crunch-tastic! If you want rules regarding all the extra stuff in your game, this is it. Want rules for an honor system? It's here. Want to start a kingdom? There is a whole chapter on how to do the rules for it. It covers a lot of ground. Some of these rules are kind of reprints as these rules were covered in different adventure paths, but that's not necessarily bad as the rules have gotten a polish since their last printing. 5/5

Story or “Fluff”-This section might not fit the best here. This book sets out to be a rules book. It's pretty system neutral as you're just running the Pathfinder/3.5 system somewhere and these rules cover the "in between" stuff. You don't need a lot of story. However chapter one is how to build a character. It does an excellent job of describing what stuff you could include in your character. If you're George R.R. Martin, you don't need this. However, I have a friend who loves Pathfinder, but when presented with character generation, he freezes. This chapter gives some good fluff for your characters and suggests traits for you to take for all the fluff. Heck, if you want to completely randomize your PCs, this chapter gives tables and tables of random stuff to make your new PC. Where the fluff is needed, it's done well, but don't expect it throughout the book. 4/5

Execution-This book is the standard Paizo quality. The book is a nice hard cover with well put together pages. The layout lacks a bit. There are pages after pages of tables or rules or columns of text. Nothing brakes up much of what you're reading, so it gets a little boring. It's important rules, if you want them, but they get very dry, very quick. 3.5/5

Final Thoughts-Unlike a base book, this is a one copy at the table max book. This is something you might want to get, skim through, and then give to your GM while telling him which of these rules you want in the game. It's a repeat of many of the rules systems explored in the adventure paths, which isn't bad because the rules do get a little touch up here and there. However, if you want a dungeon crawling game where you find some monsters, kill them, and take gear, this isn't for you. If you want to do some crazy game where you explore a mist filled continent via random hex crawl where you establish a kingdom while maintaining your family's honor, waging a war for the throne, marrying into different family lines, and dealing with the crushing shame of your fathers half fiend lineage, then YES you will need this book. 83%


Excellent product adaptable to other games

After thumbing through the book I decided to pick it up. I think the systems in the book are really interesting and I'm actually adapting them to my 4e game.

The book is chock full of fluffy stuff but stuff tied with mechanics so as a DM you get an idea of what type of rewards to apply to a player when they have a background or have own a business. The mass combat section is pretty neat as well, and with a little tweaking I can adapt that as well.

This is a pretty decent fluff book. However, I wish the price was $29.99 instead. The paper quality used is substantially weaker than previous books. There are useful things to be found within for the GM who is not too busy to come up with himself or herself but nothing is overwhelming in here. Reminds me of the numerous volumes Wotc produced for 4E.

This is definitely a homerun for Paizo. This is definitely one of their best products they have put out in a while. I actually gave it 4.5 out of 5 stars, but it is still good enough to give it 5 here.

It will also be interesting to see how this all compares to the excellent Adventurer Conqueror King System, which is an ODnD retro-clone/retro-alike. The end game with castle building, economies, running criminal gangs etc is very much part of the game. The coolest bit I like is that there is a reason for dungeons, wizards have to make them to entice monsters and so they have a place to gather monster parts for their experiments and rituals. Chaotic mages may well gather adventurer parts...

The Unearthed Arcana rules (for Incantations and many more things, like facing variants) are OGL and still available on-line. Kobold Press' products include new Incantations in a few cases (Northlands, for example).

Edit: More on-topic, I hope we get some additional clues to the content in the near future.


I'm hoping for extended settlement qualities ad disadvantages :) which I'm almost certain will be in this hardcover.

I’m really looking forward to the stronghold (kingdom) building rules and especially the section SKR will be adding on magic item creation clarification, it’s something that has been needed for awhile now.


I can't wait to get this, as I am halfway through running the Varnhold Vanishing and *really* want to see the revised kingdom building rules.

And I am very much hoping that these rules include a straightforward way to randomly generate settlement magic items using the tables in Ultimate Equipment.

I'm getting a great vibe from what I'm reading about this upcoming release! I can hardly pick one of the promising subsystems it will bring to our tables as the one I anticipate most favourably. Heh!

Now, I know it's been hinted at, but I was wondering whether Ultimate Campaign will actually include 'building' rules for Factions (a la "Faction Guide"), possibly with a handful of world-neutral ones (say: a good-aligned church, a thieves' guild, a knightly order…). I'm talking about a couple tables suggesting appropriate rewards/duties for different TPA scores, and CPA costs—an expanded version of "Appendix 1" from the Faction Guide, if you will.

That would be killer! I love the added depth such subsystems bring to a game.

(P.S. Also, I would second [if somewhat belatedly] other people's suggestion that city stats and kingdom stats should speak to one another. Perhaps make a kingdom's capital city impact the calculation of a kingdom's statistics? I find the GMG rules for settlements work quite fantastically; it'd be a shame to move away from them.)

Justification: The less product Paizo sells on their own website, the less profit they make from it, the more they have to pay to store unsold product, the more likely they are to stop producing content.

If you dont want the PDF and are happy to potentially wait a couple of months after release to get it, Amazon is probably the best bet. Paizo have consistently said that they dont have a problem with people choosing the purchasing method that suits their personal circumstances.

Make sure you factor in all the costs though, the "How come Amazon are listing XYX as unavailable a month after release?" threads are reasonably common.

Amazon is consistently weeks if not months late in releasing Paizo books. If getting it at release is important, then that's worth considering if the price increase is worth it.


Thanks for the responses. I've purchased 90% of my Pathfinder products off the Paizo website, own all the hardcover books and currently own ~80 softcovers. Maybe I'm just lucky but of the two new releases I purchased off Amazon I got them with a day or two of the official release. The estimated delivery date right now for my Amazon order for Ultimate Campaign is May 2. I've got Amazon Prime so there are no shipping costs.

@TOZ - Paizo's business model can't depend on customers voluntarily picking the worst price option.

It doesn't, it relies on the subscriptions. But warehouse costs don't pay for themselves, so every book they don't sell through their own store is a hit on their revenue. They obviously are not balanced precariously on a cliff, but it IS a factor.

I purchase the PDF when the rulebook is released due to my extreme lack of skill in waiting for something good to come out, then buy a hardcopy later off Amazon. it both supports Paizo and is cheaper then the subscription deal.

subscription: $40 for hard copy and PDF.

PDF and Amazon: $10 for the PDF, $26 for the hard copy, total: $36. Drawback: get the hardcopy much later.

Paizo also does not undercut other sellers intentionally. It has been said many times on the boards. They feel that doing so is not ethical, causes other sellers not to carry their books, and ultimately causes fewer sales.

Buying their books from where every you want and it still supports Paizo and supports the game and industry in general.

You get some money off everything for subscribing to the adventure path, but yes, the benefit really is that you get the PDF and the warm fuzzy feeling that you support Paizo. Which is why I do it, and why I don't pirate pdfs from before I did (but if paizo ever wanted to bundle older pdfs for cheap, I would fork out a pretty penny). Paizo can't undercut Amazon, just like most small publishers can't. It's a conundrum, not a business model. Amazon is just working on a whole different level.

I haven’t felt this excited about a Paizo release since the Core Rule book and APG. I really want this Book as a Hard Cover and as a PDF.

One of those books you can just sit and read for fun. Same as Inner world sea Guide, but packed with wonderful rules :-)

This book is a book I really want. It is a great tool for Players as it will lead some to realize 'Hey there is more do to than just kill monsters and take their stuff' and it gives GMs the tools to deal with player like who at times seem more interested in downtime than actual adventures...

I'll proably buy three copies...giving on to my GM as a subtl hint...and I like having two copies of books so I can loan them out to players that I GM for.


Why not 2 books and a PDF?
