Best Scupts yet, Just fix the Packaging!

4/5

These are probably the most impressive miniatures Paizo has put out yet. If you keep improving your miniatures, you're going to make your older sets look drab! ;)
The elementals were by far my favourites in this set. I love the poses, I love the paint job. I also love that they released one of each core medium sized elemental and one of each core large sized elemental, instead of spreading them over multiple releases.
Another comment I'd like to make is the dramatic difference between rares and Uncommon/Commons in this set. Paizo definitely got their count right with this set!

Out of 2 Cases, I got 4 breakages in total. 2 Medium Air elementals that pooped of their bases, a wyvern that popped off its base, and a Koriah Azmeren who lost an arm (Boyfriend glued it back on for me. What a nice guy).

I'm just going to repeat suggestions I've heard that I think are great for preventing breakages in the future:

1. Twist tie ALL the larges into place.
2. Consider putting a 'barrier' between the large and medium/small miniatures in the package

One last thing I'd like to mention: I'm not sure how so many people are getting breakages AFTER they get their miniatures. In the time I've used Pathfinder Battles miniatures (Since the release of The 4 piece Iconic pack) I have had a total of one breakage (Seoni lost an arm after I decided to bring her to a PFS game for another player. Had it coming). Granted, I am also more careful with the fragile pieces (succubus with wings, skeletons, etc). I also make a point not to play in concrete floored areas or places where dropping them could break them.
So personally, I DON'T want Paizo to sacrifice detail for more durability. I don't need my miniatures to be DDM bendy.

I can't wait to see the releases for the next set. I'm sure they're just going to blow us away :)

Here's the breakdown of my 2 cases combined:
(7) Caedimus
(6) Portioque
(7) Mite
(8) Grub Swarm
(9) Boggard
(9) Clockwork Soldier

Shattered...shadubee

3/5

I concur with the other reviewers. I've not opened all of my case yet, but I've had one broken figure, and, more importantly, the Blue Dragon arrived with all of its horns broken off. In the 10 years or so of ordering plastic minis online, or in stores, I've never had any arrive broken until now. Also, when I contacted paizo support about the dragon, including an image of it, I heard nothing from them for two full business days. Actually had to call them, and the support person's response was, if it came broken, you have to send it back to WizKids. So I've done that, with no guarantee I'll get the blue dragon back. Not the kind of service/quality I've come to expect from paizo.

Update 130209: Add Boggard Bits to the list of broken figures. A rogue Hill Giant in a box smashed both hand on the Boggard in the box. Nearly every large figure that was not twist-tied down was loose in this case.

Update 130311: Got the replacement Blue Dragon direct from WizKids for the broken one I sent back. The replacement Blue Dragon only had one small horn broken off. It will be easier to super-glue or expoxy the dragon back on to its base, though, as it was only glued on to one peg and the one connected peg broke when I removed the dragon from the plastic.

Meddle with my Metal: Plastics are Getting Better!

4/5

I've had numerous complaints about pre-painted plastics over the years which have so far prevented me from buying unopened boosters. While Shattered Star still hasn't met the requirements for me to consider buying them blind, it's certainly heading in the right direction.

I purchased a set of air and water elementals, a few trolls, an alchemical golem and a glass golem. Judging by the quality of these, I can say that Shattered Star may contain some of the best sculpts I've seen on plastic minis yet. Though many are condemning hard plastic as the cause of breakage, I’ll be firmly embracing it if it means sculpts like these will be common place in future sets. Fixing a broken leg is possible with a bit of glue and a pin if necessary (though the small legs of the alchemical golem that arrived broken will prove frustrating to reattach). Fixing a sculpt that lost all of its detail to soft plastic is impossible.

As a GM, I want impressive monster miniatures to enhance my game, and have little/no desire for NPC miniatures, which tend to lose a good deal in the mass production process. This is my principle reason for not wanting to buy boosters. While it looks like this still holds mostly true for the humanoid minis in the set, some of the Shattered Star monster minis present the first cases where the extra expense and effort involved with a metal mini would not necessarily result in a significantly better miniature. I find the troll champions to be particularly well done, with clear definition in all of the details, use of a gloss on the tongue to make it look wet, and a presence on the base that is sure to make for a striking reveal when placed alongside the PCs miniatures.

The clear plastics present in the elementals and golems are a “clear” reason to purchase them over metal paint-it-yourself variants. The effect is incredible, especially in the alchemical golem, even if its overall size was a little underwhelming in person. Side by side, the large air elemental and the large water elemental appear a little too similar in color, with the air elemental being tinted a little too blue, and the water elemental being highlighted with a little too much white. I’d imagine that individual runs of these will have some variation though, so the colorization issue wouldn't affect my decision to buy. All in all, these are minor complaints in the face of an overall firmly positive impression.

7 broken in 2 cases

2/5

As a few others have mentioned, these miniatures are far, far too prone to breaking during shipping. I ordered two cases and got seven broken miniatures in them:

1x Portioque, arm snapped off
2x Catfolk Rogue, shins snapped off base (some feet still attached)
1x Mite on Spider, spider legs snapped off
1x Shriezyx, legs snapped off
1x Night Hag, shins snapped off base (one foot still attached)
1x Koriah Azmeren, sword arm snapped off

This is worse than the Rise of the Runelords set (three snapped off bases in one case), and it's frustrating.

One bit of good news relative to Rise of the Runelords is that each case I ordered contained a complete set. (I was missing a couple of figures in my lone Rise of the Runelords case.) I didn't get a single duplicate Rare figure in either case though, so after 2 cases I have exactly two of each Rare figure (including the broken ones).

Shattered is the word

2/5

Lots of broken miniatures, some with the parts in the boxes, some without. I will be having to buy singles to get a complete set out of my case because of the breakage and missing parts.

Either the packaging doesn't work, or they are being handled carelessly before they are packed.

You must be a little bit happy about the fact that your blog engenders such a strong following?

Will Paizo mail out Shattered Star minis so that they are in hand to their subscribers by release date? It is such a bummer to be a case subscriber and not get your case for days after release. Your FLGS has people opening their boosters, and you just sit hoping that some day soon you can open yours. And those people aren't even Paizo case subscribers. :(

It is now January, where are my minis? :P hehe

Now that we are only around 3 weeks out any chance we can get a breakdown on whats in the case. Not the actual minis but sizes - how many large vs medium - and rarity?

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

I was finally able to buy a RotR case (w/o the Huge case) and also buy the Rune Giant ... and I am not sorry I did.

I forgot (however) to utilize my holiday13 discount. :(

I know it can't be used on preorders (as would be the case with the Shattered Star miniatures set ... as of right now) but I was wondering ... once the set is "off" preorder and can just be purchased ... would I be able to use the holiday13 discount and save about $40?

Also, I have been especially fortunate and have gotten (2) $50 paizo gift certificates (one is already added to my account as store credit, the other was printed out and given to me) ... *IF* I can order the Shattered Star minis set and apply the holiday discount, would I be able to pay for $100 of the amount with those GC/store credit and the rest on my bank card/charge card?

I know it's a somewhat complicated question (and likely made more complicated by the way I asked it) but hopefully you get the gist. If what I'm asking can't be done, it's not a deal breaker (of course) but then I'll need to decide what I'm going to purchase with my "paizo bucks". :) And save an additional 10% on.

Size breakdowns have been in the product description since the beginning:

Shattered Star Standard Boosters contain 1 Large figure and 3 Medium or Small figures
Shattered Star Standard Bricks contain 8 Standard Boosters (32 figures total)
Shattered Star Standard Cases contain 4 Standard Bricks (32 Standard Boosters, 128 figures total)

So a case gets you 32 Large and 96 Medium or Small.

WizKids does not release rarity breakdowns.

Paizo Employee Customer Carebear

As soon as the minis are no longer on pre-order, you can order them using the holiday code.

You can combine the use of store credit and holiday discounts.

Please note, the case premium Blue Dragon is only available when the case is pre-ordered or purchased via the Battles subscription. **

If you have further questions, please post over in the customer service forums as I'll be sure to see it over there. (I almost missed seeing this one!)

**Edit: So it turns out that Runelords cases/premium were set up incorrectly. We had intended that after the pre-order date you would not be able to get the premium unless you subscribed. However, we've learned some things with the first two Battles sets and after reviewing this policy we have decided that for each case, regardless of whether it is in a subscription or pre-order or regular order, you will be able to buy one case premium. Subscriptions of course still have the 75% discount on the case premium.

Oh, hi Sara Marie ...

Sorry about that, but thanks for the information (especially regarding the blue dragon premium). I'll be sure to post further questions like this in the CS forums. :)

Is the brick actually available now?!?

I believe the release date is technically 1/23/12, but my subscription order is in pre-processing now, so shouldn't be long now.

I just noticed that the case and standard booster still say pre-order, but the brick does not. I haven't tried ordering, since if I buy these miniatures, I will buy singles or go for a case anyway. Just thought it was interesting.

Whether they have it in stock or not, they should not be releasing it until 1/23. If you hear of anybody releasing early, please let me know.

Pathfinder Battles Case Subscriber

Vic, to be clear, by releasing before then do you mean not shipping, or not arriving until 1/23? I know some times like with video game release dates companies will allow shipping to arrive on release day, as long as it's not getting into customer hands any earlier.

Not sure if that follows for minis, but just making sure I don't narc someone out if they're not actually being bad :P

Webstore Gninja Minion

They're not allowed to sell it before the release date is generally how it works.

OK fair enough, doesn't work like the game/movie release model used by say Amazon then. I'll let you know if I see any shenanigans!

Your subscriptions are set to "Hold Sidecart for Monthly Shipment" which means that if the minis start shipping before the regular Pathfinder subscriptions, your order will wait for the Pathfinder subscriptions. If you'd like to change them to ship ASAP you can do so on your My Subscription page. We are currently processing the regular orders so you should see your confirmation email as we spawn an order with your minis and AP come through in a few hours.

If you're ever curious about the when's and what's for the months subscriptions, I try to post updates in customer service forums toward the beginning of each month. Here is January's.

Ah, thanks for the answer Sara. I thought the "Hold Sidecart" stuff was shipping on the 16th. My bad!

I'll wait for Tuesday then :)

A full set from the last booster in the case, whew.

The sculpts on the elemental series are phenomenal.
The Clockwork Reliquary is so intricately detailed, it boggles the mind how you didn't lose any detail when it was painted.

But my favorite mini of the set has to be the alchemical golem. The number of translucent colors on that model is ridiculous and when lit correctly (like from my laptops monitor), it appears to have a green glow coming from the solid colored tubes thanks to the entire model being a translucent base. Its so eerie and colorful . . . simply beautiful.

One complaint about the packaging. Alot (about 75%) of the large models were bouncing around the interior when I opened them up. This wouldn't be too bad, expect for the fact that in about one or two boosters a brick, the free roaming large had broken one of the smaller models. The hill giants and trolls were the main offenders, literally disarming their fellow packmates.

So, fair warning. Be sure to listen for the tell-tale sound of mite arms bouncing around when ripping open your boosters. Otherwise you'll have a nice double amputee spider-rider. I'm thinking of making mine a crippled master monk.

Well, at least they're fitting perpetrators of that sort of thing.

Bummer, though. I probably won't pick up any bricks or larger booster sets because of international shipping costs, but if I did and ended up with several broken minis I'd be pretty darn annoyed.

You already have your case? I live literally 20 minutes from Paizo and I have nothing. :( Hasn't even shipped yet (and yes, I have it set to ship separately).

Oh well, gives me more time to actually make some space for them.

I forgot to go back in and change the shipping for the Battles Subscription. Priority mail, though more expensive, got the minis here very quickly.

According to Google, I live 40 hours away from Paizo, so maybe you'd want to drop a line to Customer Service to check on it?

And @Kajehase, the handicapped minis can be repaired with a touch of glue, but I'd figure Paizo would like to know about the rampaging giants.

There is no case bundle for this set, it would just be a case. The only reason Rise of the Runelords had a case bundle was there was the booster case and the case for the huge minis, you don't have that this time.

Although I am not sure if you get the Blue Dragon if you just order a case straight from the website. I think you only get those from subscribing, but again, not really sure.

You can order a premium along with a case but you don't get the heavily discounted price that a subscription gives you.

So, are you saying if you have a subscription of 2 cases already, if you order a third you would get the Blue Dragon at the heavy discount?

Or are you just saying the case you want to order would just be an additional case on your subscription, instead?

I ask because I already have 2 cases for my subscription. :)

I'm saying if you want a case and a discounted blue dragon, bump up your subscription by one case and order a blue dragon along with it.

I ordered a second case+premium after my subscription had shipped and didnt get the mega-discount. I think in your case you'd need to change to 3 cases and 3 premiums. Not sure how that would work if your 2 pre-existing subscriptions had already shipped though.

Sorry—I should have said "bump up your subscription by one case and one premium."

Opened a case today. Gorgeous set, guys. Huge kudos on this one.

The only complaints I have:

1 - The mites are supposed to be tiny sized, and the derro small size. but the sculpts are pretty much the opposite; the mites are enormous compared to the derro.

2 - The swarms should be made so they're flat. That way you can put them under a character's mini when they enter that character's space, rather than just leaning them against the character mini's legs.

3 - I know this one's odd to hear, but with some of the larges you went TOO big. The water elemental flares out so much that getting minis in the adjacent squares will sometimes not happen, and the size of the troll dwarfs the sizes of the fire and hill giants (the opposite problem from the troll in the first set). They all look really good, though; don't get me wrong.

But, that's it. The set is amazing, overall, and an equally excellent addition for anyone who already has a good collection, or anyone who is just starting out in minisland. Awesome job!

Actually, it turns out that quantity changes only apply to the *next* sub shipment, so first do the quantity change, then contact customer service and they'll get you another case of the current release with the discounted premium.

Paizo Employee Customer Carebear

So, just to be clear:

If you have a subscription to one case & premium of Pathfinder Battles Minis and you decide you want two cases & premiums for the next set, just go to your My Subscription page, scroll down to the block describing the Battles subscription and adjust the subscription to two cases & premiums. When that set has shipped, go back to your My Subscription page and adjust (up or down) to however many cases & premiums you want for the next set.

There is a caveat to this. If your subscription shipment is currently pending or has already shipped you'll need to adjust the numbers on your My Subscription page and then also contact customer service so we can manually add in the extra sets.

Also, the Bestiary notes that both mites and derro stand 3 feet tall, which make them on the small side of Small. Couple that with the spindliness of the Derro illustration, and I think they're just smaller than you think. His pose is a bit hunched over, but if he were fully upright, he'd come up to Valeros' waist, just as he should. We really did pay a lot of attention to getting the scale right on these guys.

Echoing others, this set shouldn't be called shattered star, but shattered Darrow I think I had a total of 7 broken minis, 3 were Darrows

Damage aside, set is awesome

I just finished opening my case from the friendly local game store. The miniatures, without exception, look great! The distribution was excellent as well, with multiples of all the monsters, and singles of the unique NPCs, just how it should be.

I did have half a dozen broken miniatures, so my only complaint is the packaging. I have a full set, but a number of the minis I only have one of are broken.

I checked the WizKids site and found their replacement system, but Shattered Star is not an option. Any idea when they will have replacements available?

I opened my brick (sorry, guys, finances won't allow more) of figs last night and was more excited with each box. While there were a couple of figs with less-than-ideal paint jobs (I am looking at you Sorshen), in general, I was very pleased with the figs I received. And overjoyed with the wyvern--holy cow! What a fig! And the raging troll, iron golem, and Xin. I will definitely be looking at singles to round out my collection.

Seeing the number of people with broken minis I'm beginning to worry about mine. Local UPS isn't known for it's gentle hand.
